I am a Cpl. in the Army and just returned from Iraq. I carried my shotgun all year on my back in your shotgun scabbard, and it worked great! I was glad to have it around several times, and it proved to be an easy way to keep the shotgun handy for the squad. Thanks for your great product, and for your support of our troops!!

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I was in Weapons Company 3/5. The unit made us t-shirts with the 3/5 logo/emblem/crest, "Consumate Professionals". I was honorable discharged in 1999 and the t-shirt has been long-gone. I searched a couple of web site to find a shirt with the logo/emblem/crest but there was no luck. It didn't take me long to search this site before I found what I was looking for. When the shirt arrived it was better than what I expected. I love the t-shirt and wear it with pride and often. Thank you SpecialForces.com

Most Sincerely,
Bryan P.

Thank you!!!

Your Shirts are the best.

Dear SFG,

Thank you for being so prompt with my order, and the refund as well.

I thought a little constructive thoughts were in order.

The "HRT" boot knife is well constructed. I had to "hone" the edge though, both sides,to get it up to spec.

As for the "GI USMC Combat Knife"......Well, it wasn't really a K-Bar, at least not one that I've ever seen. It read "US", and above that it read "Ontario". No worries though, after I used a ceramic sharpening stone on both the small back edge and the full length edge, I'm quite pleased with them both. Oh, I almost forgot, both were very pretty well balanced.

I'll be purchasing again from you in the near future.

Ed Whiteside

Dear Special Forces

They turned out GREAT!!!!!! Thanks. I will be back for other things.

Thanks Folks. As always you have been most polite and professional. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

 The Burning of the

USS Philadelphia

By Theodore Roosevelt

"And say besides, that in Aleppo once,

Where a malignant and a turban'd Turk

Beat a Venetian and traduced the state,

I took by the throat the circumcised dog

And smote him, thus."

 - Othello.

It is difficult to conceive that there ever was a time when the United States paid a money tribute to anybody. It is even more difficult to imagine the United States paying blackmail to a set of small piratical tribes on the coast of Africa. Yet this is precisely what we once did with the Barbary powers, as they were called the States of Morocco, Tunis, Tripoli, and Algiers, lying along the northern coast of Africa. The only excuse to be made for such action was that we merely followed the example of Christendom. The civilized people of the world were then in the habit of paying sums of money to these miserable pirates, in order to secure immunity for their merchant vessels in the Mediterranean. For this purpose Congress appropriated money, and treaties were made by the President and ratified by the Senate. On one occasion, at least. Congress actually revoked the authorization of some new ships for the navy, and appropriated more money than was required to build the men-of-war in order to buy off the Barbary powers.  The fund for this disgraceful purpose was known as the "Mediterranean fund," and was intrusted to the Secretary of State to be disbursed by him in his discretion. After we had our brush with France, however, in 1798, and after Truxtun's brilliant victory over the French frigate L'Insurgente in the following year, it occurred to our government that perhaps there was a more direct as well as a more manly way of dealing with the Barbary pirates than by feebly paying them tribute, and in 1801 a small squadron, under Commodore Dale, proceeded to the Mediterranean.

At the same time events occurred which showed strikingly the absurdity as well as the weakness of this policy of paying blackmail to pirates. The Bashaw of Tripoli, complaining that we had given more money to some of Algerian ministers than we had to him, and also that we had presented Algiers with a frigate, declared war upon us, and cut down the flag-staff in front of the residence of the American consul. At the same time, and for the same reason, Morocco and Tunis began to grumble at the treatment which they had received. The fact was that, with nations as with individuals, when the payment of blackmail is once begun there is no end to it. The appearance, however, of our little squadron in the Mediterranean showed at once the superiority of a policy of force over one of cowardly submission. Morocco and Tunis immediately stopped their grumbling and came to terms with the United States, and this left us free to deal with Tripoli.

Philadelphia run a ground.
Commodore Dale hampered by his orders, which permitted him only to protect our commerce, and which forbade actual hostilities. Nevertheless, even under these limited orders, the Enterprise, of twelve guns, commanded by Lieutenant Sterrett, fought an action with the Tripolitan ship Tripoli, of fourteen guns. The engagement lasted three hours, when the Tripoli struck, having lost her mizzenmast, and with twenty of her crew killed and thirty wounded. Sterrett, having no orders to make captures, threw all the guns and ammunition of the Tripoli overboard, cut away her remaining masts, and left her with only one spar and a single sail to drift back to Tripoli, as a hint to the Bashaw of the new American policy.

In 1803 the command of our fleet in the Mediterranean was taken by Commodore Preble, who had just succeeded in forcing satisfaction from Morocco for an attack made upon our merchantmen by a vessel from Tangier. He also proclaimed a blockade of Tripoli and was preparing to enforce it when the news reached him that the best ships in our navy, had gone upon a reef in the harbor of Tripoli, while pursuing a vessel there, and had been surrounded and captured, with all her crew, by the Tripolitan gunboats, when she was entirely helpless either to fight or sail. This was a very serious blow to our navy and to our operations against Tripoli. It not only weakened our forces, but it was also a great help to our enemy. The Tripolitans got the Philadelphia off the rocks, towed her into the harbor, and anchored her close under the guns of their forts. They also replaced her batteries, and prepared to make her ready for sea, where she would have been a most formidable danger to our shipping.

Under these circumstances Stephen Decatur, a young lieutenant in command of the Enterprise, offered to Commodore Preble to go into the harbor and destroy the Philadelphia. Some delay ensued as our squadron was driven by severe gales form the Tripolitan coast; but at last, in January, 1804, Preble gave orders to Decatur to undertake the work for which he had volunteered. A small vessel known as a ketch had been recently captured from the Tripolitans by Decatur, and this prize was now named the Intrepid, and assigned to him for the work he had in hand. He took seventy men from his own ship, the Enterprise, and put them on the Intrepid, and then, accompanied by Lieutenant Stewart in the Siren, who was to support him, he set sail for Tripoli. He and his crew were very much cramped as well as badly fed on the little vessel which had been given to them, but they succeeded, nevertheless, in reaching Tripoli in safety, accompanied by the Siren.

For nearly a week they were unable to approach the harbor, owing to severe gales which threatened the loss of their vessel; but on February 16 the weather moderated and Decatur determined to go in. It is well to recall, briefly, the extreme peril of the attack which he was about to make. The Philadelphia, with forty guns mounted double-shotted,  and ready for firing, and manned by a full complement of men, was moored within half a gunshot of the Bashaw's castle, the mole and crown batteries, and within range of ten other batteries, mounting, altogether, one hundred and fifteen guns. Some Tripolitan cruisers, two galleys, and nineteen gunboats also lay between the Philadelphia and the shore. Into the midst of this powerful armament Decatur had to go with his little vessel of sixty tons, carrying four small guns and having a crew of seventy-five men.

The Americans, however were entirely undismayed by the odds against them, and at seven o'clock Decatur went into the harbor between the reef and shoal which formed its mouth. He steered on steadily toward the Philadelphia, the breeze getting constantly lighter, and by half-past nine was within two hundred yards of the frigate. As they approached Decatur stood at the helm with the pilot, only two or three men showing on deck and the rest of the crew lying hidden under the bulwarks. In this way he drifted to within nearly twenty yards of the Philadelphia. The suspicions of the Tripolitans, however were not aroused, and when they hailed the Intrepid, the pilot answered that they had lost their anchors in a gale, and asked that they might run a warp to the frigate and ride by he. While the talk went on the Intrepid's boat shoved off with the rope, and pulling to the fore-chains of the Philadelphia, made the line fast. A few of the crew then began to haul on the lines, and thus the Intrepid was drawn gradually toward the frigate.

The suspicions of the Tripolitans were now at last awakened. They raised the cry of "Americanos!" and ordered off the Intrepid, but it was too late. As the vessels came in contact, Decatur sprang up the main chains of the Philadelphia, calling out the order to board. He was rapidly followed by his officers and men, and as they swarmed over the rails and came upon the deck, the Tripolitan crew gathered, panic-stricken, in a confused mass on the forecastle. Decatur waited a moment until his men were behind him, and then, placing himself at their head, drew his sword and rushed upon the Tripolitans. There was a very short struggle, and the Tripolitans, crowded together, terrified and surprised, were cut down or driven overboard. In five minutes the ship was cleared of the enemy.

Decatur would have liked to have taken the Philadelphia out of the harbor, but that was impossible. He therefore gave orders to burn the ship, and his men, who had been thoroughly instructed in what they were to do, dispersed into all parts of the frigate with the combustibles which had been prepared, and in a few minutes, so well and quickly was the work done, the flames broke out in all parts of the Philadelphia. As soon as this was effected the order was given to return to the Intrepid. Without confusion the men obeyed. It was a moment of great danger, for fire was breaking out on all sides, and the Intrepid herself, filled as she was with powder and combustibles, was in great peril of sudden destruction. The rapidity of Decatur's movements however saved everything. The cables were cut, the sweeps got out, and the Intrepid drew rapidly away from the burning frigate. It was a magnificent sight as the flames burst out over the Philadelphia and ran rapidly and fiercely up the masts and rigging. As her guns became heated they were discharged, one battery pouring its shots into the town. Finally the cables parted, and then the Philadelphia, a mass of flames, drifted across the harbor, and blew up.  Meantime the batteries of the shipping and the castle had been turned upon the Intrepid, but although the shot struck all around her, she escaped successfully with only one shot through her mainsail, and, joining the Siren bore away.

This successful attack was carried through by the cool courage of Decatur and the admirable discipline of his men. The hazard was very great, the odds were very heavy, and everything depended on the nerve with which the attack was made and the completeness of the surprise. Nothing miscarried, and no success could have been more complete. Nelson, at that time in the Mediterranean, and the best judge of a naval exploit as well as the greatest naval commander who has ever lived, pronounced it "the most bold and daring act of the age." We meet no single feat exactly like it in our own naval history, brilliant as that has been, until we come to Cushing's destruction of the Albemarle in the war of the rebellion. In the years that have elapsed, and among the great events that have occurred since that time, Decatur's burning of the Philadelphia has been well-nigh forgotten; but it is one of those feats of arms which illustrate the high courage of American seamen, and which ought always to be remembered.

The USS Pueblo on 23 January 1968, while off Wonsan, North Korea, was attacked by local forces and seized. One crewmember was killed in the assault and the other eighty-two men on board were taken prisoner.  After eleven months in captivity, often under inhumane conditions, Pueblo's crew was repatriated on 23 December 1968. The ship was retained by North Korea, though she is still the property of the U.S. Navy. She was exhibited at Wonsan and Hungham for three decades and is now a museum at Pyongyang, the North Korean capital city. I think we should keep with tradition and rid ourselves of this embarrassment by either bringing her home or destroying her then allow it to continue to stand as a symbol of our weakness to the world.

Word of Truth
Politically Correct Christian
The Word Of Truth - Alive and Powerful

By Rev G.J. Rako

The PC (politically correct) Christian is one that is woefully ignorant of the Word of God.  Bible Christianity by its very nature is antithetical to the weak, demonic characteristics of political correctness.  Christianity does not cater to cultural, racial, and ethnic or any other alleged disadvantaged group.  Political correctness is a religion and like all religions, it is opposed to the God of the Bible.  Religion is man by his own efforts trying to gain the favor of God.  Man cannot by his works and deeds ever measure up to the perfection that God's righteousness demands.

Wikipedia definition;  Political correctness (also politically correct or PC) is a term used to describe language, or behavior, which is claimed to be calculated to provide a minimum of offense, particularly to the racial, cultural, or other identity groups being described. The concept is not exclusive to the English language. A text that conforms to the ideals of political correctness is said to be politically correct.

The existence of PC has been alleged and denounced by conservative, (Lind, Buchanan, Sobran), liberal (Hentoff 1992, Schlesinger 1998), and other (Brandt 1992) authors. The term itself and its usage is hotly contested. Some left-wing authors (Messer-Davidow 1993, Schultz 1993, Glassner 1999) have argued that "political correctness" is a straw man, meant to discredit what they consider progressive social change, especially around issues of race and gender.

The term PC is sometimes used in a pejorative or ironic sense to satirise either the idea that carefully chosen language can encourage, promote, or establish certain social outcomes and relationships, or the belief that the resulting changes benefit society. This satire often comments on certain forms of identity politics, including gay rights, feminism, multiculturalism and the disability rights movement. For example, the use of "gender-neutral" job titles ("lineworker" instead of "lineman," "chairperson" or "chair" instead of "chairman," etc.), the use of the expression "differently abled" rather than "disabled", or the use of "Native American" rather than "Indian", are all sometimes referred to as "politically correct". 'PC' terms are also applied to objects, such as "maintenance cover" instead of "manhole cover".

The definition states that PC is "language or behavior...to provide a minimum of offense".  Furthermore, PC rejects the concept of absolute truth and standards.  First, the Bible states that faith alone in Christ alone is the only means of obtaining a relationship with the living God (John 14:6) and that faith in Christ is the only means of appropriating the free gift of eternal life (Eph 2:8-9, I John 5:13).  Let me tell you this eternal fact has, is causing and will continue to cause great offense.

The truth of the Word of God has been offending people for thousands of years.  If you as a Christian are not offending someone in your periphery then you are probably a failure in the Christian way of life.  However, the PC cannot allow any kind of offense.  You see if you reject God's plan of salvation the result is condemnation, judgment and the lake of fire.  How horribly exclusionary God's plan of salvation is to the PC, they state the Bible is saying that if we wonderfully PC tolerant groups do not accept the Bible then we are condemned or judged already.  That is exactly what the Bible states, "and there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved" (John 3:18, Acts 4:12).  Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but, by Me" (John 14:6).  This passage clearly states that the adherents of islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism, are wrong.  They are all following the path, which leads straight to hell (how politically incorrect of me).  I do not consider islam to be a religion but a terrorist organization.  If I must call it a religion then it is the religion of death!  Make no mistake; you tolerate them while they plot your death.

The Bible is the only objective reality of the universe it is absolute truth.  According to the PC, you are guilty of committing a hate crime if you believe the Bible.  If you are audacious enough to teach or speak the Word of God, then you are guilty of hate speech.  What happened to the espoused tolerance of the theologically liberal left?  There cannot be and there will not be tolerance of Christianity.  Christianity is under satanic attack today, persecution of Biblical Christians is right behind the war of words waged by the PC.

On a positive note Jesus Christ as eternal God voluntarily gave up the independent use of His Deity and humbled Himself by becoming true humanity (Philippians 2:6-8).  He was born a man, lived a perfect sinless life became our substitute, and died instead of us.  He accomplished this great mission.  He went to the Cross and God the Father gathered up every sin ever committed and every sin that ever would be committed and poured them out on the body of Jesus Christ and for three hours on the cross God the Father judged each and every sin.  The perfect Righteousness and Justice of God were satisfied with this sacrifice for sin.  Whereby the sin barrier that existed between man and God was removed, salvation was complete, His efficacious, substitutionary work on the cross was finished (John 19:30).

Because of the person and completed work of Christ on the cross, you can make that most important decision of your life, the decision to have a personal relationship with the living God, the decision to receive eternal life.  This is a gift from God and cannot be earned or merited by you in any way.  God is not impressed with your good deeds and He requires none from you.  He is only impressed with the perfect work of Christ on the cross, which provided your salvation.
You can have eternal life right now at this very moment; the Scripture says; Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved (Acts16:32).  That whoever believes in Him may have eternal life (John 3:16), He who believes in the Son has eternal life ... (John 3:36).
The issue is always faith alone in Christ alone.  He did the work, we appropriate the result which is salvation by Grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9).

For the believer in Jesus Christ the issue is not salvation but the execution of the unique spiritual life of the church age.  No political correctness here either.  We are commanded to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18).  The Bible must be the priority in our lives.  Much is said concerning this subject in Scripture however, I will leave that to another day.
Questions and comments are always welcome.

"Save our 9/11 Heroes"

September 11th 2001 galvanized this nation like no other single event in recent history. The sites and sounds of the attacks on our nation horrified us that day. We watched with great pride as our police and fire responded to these attacks like platoons of soldiers in a battle for their lives.

As days passed the nation grew closer and patriotism was at an all time high. President George W. Bush stood at ground zero in front of the still smoldering pile of rubble and stated, "I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon". Citizens of this nation cheered the President as we embarked on a mission to bring justice to the cowardous terrorists that committed this ostrosity on innocent civilians.

That day the president was surrounded by men and woman whom volunteered to conduct rescue and recovery operations at ground zero. These hero's didn't hesitate to risk their lifes for the countless police, fire and civilian buried under the world trade center. The President, in his speech to the rescueers stated "our country will never forget your sacrifice".

Despite the former Presidents promise, the sad reality is politics have dealt these American heroes a dirty hand. The truth is, this country has forgotten the responder's sacrifice or at least the politicians have. These men and woman still struggle to get the proper medical care and benefits they need to treat the illnesses contracted by the smoke and pollutants as they searched and recovered our dead and injured Warriors that grim month of September 2001.

You see Cancer has struck 263 NYPD officers that responded to ground zero and 45 of them have died in the short ten years after that tragic day and new cases are being reported every day. The most common types include lung, colon, pancreatic, leukemia and other blood-cell cancers, records show.

Countless other firefighters and civilians responded to ground zero and the number of victims that need assistance is staggering.

I spoke with one of these heroes and a man that I have great respect for and is a true Patriot. His name is John Feal, the founder of the "Feal Good Foundation" and he indicated that over 1000 rescuers have died in the short ten-year period since 911. Many of these deaths can be attributed to cancers.

We all watched the television screens for weeks as these men and women sifted through the rubble searching for victims and we all saw first hand the smoke and gases they were breathing. In the back of most of our minds as we watched the operation we knew the smoke these people were breathing wasn't good. John Feal and the many other rescuers knew this also but John said "we did what needed to be done because that's what we Americans do".

That type of patriotism is found in many Americans but to run towards the danger as most ran away is not as common. John pointed out that this country was built by men like the responders to ground zero and I have to agree but what most of don't know is our government didn't keep it's promise to never forget the sacrifices these men and women made.

On September 12th 2001 John and his team of Construction Demolition experts were called to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan to aid in the cleanup & recovery mission. The greatest City in the world needed expert hands to remove twisted steel, rubble and debris from atop the thousands of people thought to be lost underneath. Having no hesitation, John rushed down to direct his team. Tragically, on Day 5 of the mission John became the mission. While supervising his team roughly 8,000 pounds of Steel came loose from the huge pile and crushed his left foot. After 11 weeks in the hospital Doctors amputated half of John's left foot.  John went through years of surgeries and innumerable hours of therapy; as well as extensive stays in the hospital.

What John did next was true to his nature; he turned his personal drama into public success. He experienced hurdle after hurdle with medical bills, time lost from work, overtime not gotten and bills piling up. He heard the word 'No' too many times from insurance companies, doctors, & elected officials, and John decided right then and there that no American, after serving honorably at "Ground Zero" for the good of our nation, should be treated like a junk yard dog looking for scraps.

The irony is John's own reputation closely resembles that same junkyard dog when a member of the US Senate or Congress pushed him aside. In the end it was Mr. Feal standing on the steps of the US Congress with a new law proudly and securely in his hands.

John started his crusade when he put his home phone number on the "Feal Good Foundation" website when he founded the non-profit organization in 2005. He wanted it to be easy to locate him and easy for people to get help.

He has dedicated himself to raising awareness and money for first responders who were injured or got sick after 9/11. He believes many have been denied disability money due them. John made 91 trips to Washington D.C. from his home in New York, to push lawmakers to pass the "James Zadroga 9/11 bill".

The passage in December 2010 established the World Trade Center Health Program and ensured $2.7 billon in funding to treat medical ailments of eligible first responders. John Feal's foundation gives money and support to responder families, "we do whatever we can," he says. "Some might need a wheelchair so we get them a wheelchair, someone needed oxygen, and we got them oxygen".

His own mending continues. His foot injury led to back problems, and he has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome. Still, he says, "I haven't taken a single pill. My foundation is my therapy.

Since 9/11 a commission was formed to hash out the many and various issues as a result of the problems that we haven't faced in recent history and that's the attack on the American mainland with civilian first responders on the front lines of an obvious declaration of war.

The James Zadroga 9/11 health and compensation bill, although delayed 9 years, was a good start in keeping President Bush's promise but it falls short due to typical politics that are played out everyday on capital hill. Cancer treatment was stricken from the original bills coverage. This is due to one doctor's opinion and not due to cold hard facts of the large number of responders that have contracted and are/or have died from cancer.

John made a comment to me that makes perfect sense "if you bottled the dozens of toxins that were recognized by health officials as being present in the air at ground zero that we were breathing into individual bottles they would have a skull and crossbones warning label on them but we didn't breath just one bottle, we had to breath a toxic soup of all these dangerous fumes mixed together for weeks".

It's not a far stretch to consider the fact that these toxic fumes could contribute to or trigger illnesses such as cancer especially since the medical community has no idea what causes cancer or how to prevent it. Regardless of the illness we need to keep our promise to these brave and suffering men and women.

As you officers read this article I want you to remember the feeling we get when the public support pours out from our communities when one of are own are taken from us in the line of duty. The local support can be overwhelming and it definitely reminds us of why we took the oath to protect and serve many years ago. Today, these hero responders from Ground Zero need that support but the local community support isn't enough. They need "National" support so the senate and congress will add Cancer to their benefits. Without national support this issue will fail and what a disgrace that would be to the men and woman whom have already died when all they did was what any on of us would have done.

John indicated that responders from 400 congressional districts out of 435 in the nation responded to ground zero. Men and women from all over the country worked at Ground Zero for months and was exposed to this toxic soup. Clearly this issue isn't a local New York issue nor can they get it done themselves in Washington D.C., they need all of our support and the politicians need to hear all of our voices.

Don't assume that your representative supports the changes to the James Zadroga 9/11 bill because the Republican version of this bill falls way short of keeping President Bush's promise and their bill is what's causing the grid lock as the Democrats could pass their version of bill that Mr. Feal supports in the Senate today.

So today I ask you to join me and take fifteen minutes of your day and contact your senator and congressman and ask them to add "Cancer" as a benefit to the James Zadroga 9/11 health and compensation bill. After all, it could be you and I needing this support!

For this month's special forces history, we are re-running a classic Special Forces History. Please check back next month for new content!

Special Forces has a very rich history.  Our origins go all the way back to WWII and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).  There are even roots to Special Ops history that go back to people and events back before the American Revolution and even times before that.

Colonel VolckmannIn June 1952, Special Forces was born from the vision and tireless work of Colonel Aaron Bank and Colonel Russell Volckmann.  Both men served during WWII in the OSS, Colonel Bank serving in the European theater and Colonel Volckmann served in the Pacific.
Colonel Volckmann was a West Point graduate, and after the fall of Bataan in 1942, he retreated into the hills and organized a resistance force among  the local indigenous, llocanos.  He trained and commanded his force in the western and northern coasts of Luzon, launching attacks against the Japanese.  During the U.S. invasion of the Philippines in January 1945, Volckmann's guerrillas attacked the retreating Japanese forces far behind the lines, capturing bases and air fields, thereby allowing the American advance to proceed at a lightning pace.

Colonel BankColonel Bank served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Office of Strategic Services (which would be disbanded by Harry Truman in 1946 but in less than a year provide much of the cadre and expertise for the new CIA). The OSS conducted both espionage operations (SI Branch) and "special operations": sabotage and guerrilla warfare (SO Branch). Bank was assigned to SO Branch, and led one of the OSS's operations, Operation Jedburgh, into France.

In that operation, Bank and two Frenchmen, an officer and a radio operator, parachuted into southern France in July 1944, and linked up with French guerillas of the Gaullist FFI. They liberated a number of towns, despite tense relations with the Communist Francs Tireurs et Partisans. In September, Bank left, mission accomplished, and reported back in to London.

In late 1944 and early 1945, Bank led "Operation Iron Cross", which evolved into a plan to capture or kill Adolf Hitler. The original plan was for a company of men disguised as German soldiers to jump in near Innsbruck in present-day Austria. There they would conduct sabotage and induce German soldiers to desert. The leaders of the unit were OSS men: Bank, a lieutenant, and two sergeants. The rank and file were prisoners of war from Nazi Germany who volunteered to fight against the Nazis. Many of them were Communists; in the end, Bank had weeded out 75 of his original 175 volunteers. They were paid sixty cents an hour, and a promise of a death benefit if they were killed.

Bank could not pass as a German, so his cover called him "Henri Marchand," a French Nazi from Martinique. The hope was that any Gestapo men asking questions wouldn't recognize a Martinique accent.

When General William Donovan, head of the OSS, was briefed on the progress of Iron Cross, he changed the mission. Hitler had been threatening that the Nazi leaders and armies would withdraw into the National Redoubt -- the mountainous area on today's German-Austrian border. This was exactly the target of Iron Cross, and Donovan ordered a new mission: "Tell Bank to get Hitler." The men of Iron Cross began training in raid and snatch techniques -- their goal was to capture Hitler alive and deliver him to a war crimes tribunal.
Iron Cross was canceled almost on the eve of execution: intelligence showed that the National Redoubt was a figment of Hitler's imagination, that Hitler was not in the target area, and that Nazi resistance was collapsing across Europe. A disappointed Bank had to thank his men for trying -- and send them back to their POW cages. Bank thought that one problem with Iron Cross was State Department aversion to setting so many armed Communists loose in an area destined for Allied occupation.

From Europe, Bank traveled to China, where he trained for an abortive mission into Indochina, and later, in September 1945, did parachute into Laos with a combined SI/SO team. During these postwar mopping-up operations, he met Ho Chi Minh, for whom he always retained great respect. The name, Special Forces, originated from the OSS, operational teams in the field from 1944 period of time.

Colonel Bank and Colonel Volckmann, teamed up and worked tirelessly to convince the Army to adopt its own unconventional guerrilla-style force. They had an ally in Brigadier General Robert McClure, who headed the Army's psychological warfare staff in the Pentagon. Bank and Volckmann convinced the Army chiefs that there were areas in the world not susceptible to conventional warfare - Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe especially - but that would make ideal targets for unconventional harassment and guerrilla fighting. Special operations as envisioned by the two men, and by Bank in particular, were a force multiplier: a small number of soldiers who could sow a disproportionately large amount of trouble for the enemy. Confusion would reign among enemy ranks and objectives would be accomplished with an extreme economy of manpower. It was a bold idea, one that went against the grain of traditional concepts, but by 1952 the Army was finally ready to embark on a new era of unconventional warfare.

Bank established the new organization's headquarters at Fort Bragg, recruiting former OSS officers, airborne and ranger troops, and seasoned war veterans.

The Army allocated 2,300 personnel slots for the unit and assigned it to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In the spring of 1952, Bank went to Fort Bragg to choose a suitable location for a Psychological Warfare/Special Forces center. He chose a remote area of the post known as Smoke Bomb Hill, not knowing that within ten years it would become one of the busiest places in the Army.

He then went about assembling a cadre of officers and NCOs who would serve as the hard-core foundation of the new unit, and who would act as a training staff to perpetuate and flesh out the fledgling organization. Bank didn't want raw recruits. He wanted the best troops in the Army, and he got them: former OSS officers, airborne troops, ex-Ranger troops and combat veterans of World War II and Korea. They were an unusual lot, a motivated bunch, men who were looking for new challenges to conquer - the more arduous the better. Virtually all spoke at least two languages, had at least a sergeant's rank, and were trained in infantry and parachute skills. Most were familiar with the customs of their target countries. They were all volunteers willing to work behind enemy lines, in civilian clothes if necessary.

That last item was no small matter. If caught operating in civilian clothes, a soldier was no longer protected by the Geneva Convention and would more than likely be shot on sight if captured. But these first volunteers didn't worry about the risks: they were long accustomed to living with anger. Many of them had come from Eastern Europe where they had fled the tyranny of communist rule at the end of World War II.

After months of intense preparation, Bank's unit was finally activated June 19, 1952, at Fort Bragg. It was designated the 10th Special Forces Group, with Bank as commander. On the day of activation, the total strength of the group was ten soldiers - Bank, one warrant officer, and eight enlisted men. That was soon to change.

Within months, the first volunteers reported to the 10th Group by the hundreds as they completed the initial phase of their Special Forces training. As soon as the 10th Group became large enough, Bank began training his troops in the most advanced techniques of unconventional warfare. As defined by the Army, the main mission of Bank's unit was "to infiltrate by land, sea or air, deep into enemy-occupied territory and organize the resistance/guerrilla potential to conduct Special Forces operations, with emphasis on guerrilla warfare." But there were secondary missions as well.

They included deep-penetration raids, intelligence missions and counterinsurgency operations. It was a tall order, one which demanded a commitment to professionalism and excellence perhaps unparalleled in American military history. But Bank's men were up to the challenge.
They had been through tough training before; their airborne and Ranger tabs were proof of that. But working for Special Forces was not going to be simply a rehash of Ranger techniques. If the volunteers didn't appreciate the difference between Rangers and Special Forces when they first signed up, they did when they went through Bank's training. As Bank put it, "Our training included many more complex subjects and was geared to entirely different, more difficult, comprehensive missions and complex operations."

The Rangers of World War II and Korea had been designed as light-infantry shock troops; their mission was to hit hard, hit fast, then get out so larger and more heavily armed units could follow through, much the same as the modern Ranger force. Special Forces, however, were designed to spend months, even years, deep within hostile territory. They would have to be self-sustaining. They would have to speak the language of their target area. They would have to know how to survive on their own without extensive resupply from the outside.

After less than a year and a half together as a full Special Forces group, Bank's men proved to the Army's satisfaction that they had mastered the skills of their new trade. So on November 11, 1953, in the aftermath of an aborted uprising in East Germany, half of the 10th Special Forces Group was permanently deployed to Bad Tolz, West Germany. The other half remained at Fort Bragg, where they were re-designated as the 77th Special Forces Group.

In the past I have worked with historians of the United States Special Operations Command, (USSOCOM), the United States Army Special Operations Command, (USASOC), the Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) at Fort Bragg, and the Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC).  I am a documentary film producer, and have spent much of my time producing military history documentaries for the DOD and the private sector.   I have been fortunate enough to interview many of our most significant historical figures from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and more recent periods of our history.

I am currently interviewing many of our Special Forces and Special Operations members of the Special Operations Association (SOA), who are comprised of service members from the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, as well as members from some of our Ally countries.

Combat Survival

When is Enough, Enough?

One of the toughest things to get a grasp on when prepping for a long term self-reliance situation is when do you finally decide that you have enough? I have not met anyone yet that has said they have enough, everyone always has something more they "need to do" or "need to have" to make it. Without a clear cut off point or goal in mind, you will continually gather and gather and when the stuff hits the fan, you'll realize in all your gathering you forgot something or got too much of the wrong thing. So, let's strive to set some realistic goals this month and create a family survival plan. Notice I didn't say "Survival Plan" - there are many reading this that could do pretty well on their own for quite a long time; but there are few that could drag their wife, kids of grandma along with them.

And that brings us to goal #1: Decide how many will be in your Survival Group.

Your "Survival Group" will be those closest to you, those you have to save or bring along. It may be your wife and kids, girlfriend, parents or whoever else that's in your life that you cannot bug out on. For me, it's my wife and kids... Define how many are in your group and how many stragglers, be it friends or neighbors, which you will allow to hang around a while. I have set a goal of 10 people- 6 in my family and 4 other adults. Once you have that number, prepare a kit for each member and include the basics necessary for survival. Items in a kit would include a knife, awe, folding saw, multi tool, heavy tarp, rope bag, cooking/canteen set, wool blanket, fire kit, compass, sleeping bag, etc. Dave Canterbury who is an affiliate of our school has some great ideas and information on kit set ups in his Pathfinder System of which I am also a student. I recommend checking them out; they're simple, practical and will do the job and you can find some of the info on Youtube...

Now that you know how many people you'll have in your group and you have a kit for each person you can go for goal #2: Decide how much food you need. Some say you can never have enough food saved; I don't necessarily agree with that sentiment. We don't know what the future holds, so if I stock up 5 years of food at my house and then I'm forced to bug out- I just lost all my food! Some believe that canning their own food and gardening and the answer. Again, this alone isn't adequate because the first marauding sweep that comes through will eliminate your feeble crops and probably the majority of your group. We must strive for a balance between all these ideas. We need to have a solid supply of ready to eat food available, we need seeds and the skills to make them grow, save them, and can the harvest they provide. We also need to know how to locate wild edibles, hunt, fish, trap, and cook over fire.

Again, make a plan that will provide ready to eat food for the people in your group, let's say for 1 year. That's a big task! But, it's realistic because it will get you through the first few waves of fear and panic and the ripple effects of society running amok for a while. This will buy you time to prepare your ground and start hunting for whatever you can get thereby lengthening the time frame in which you can utilize your ready to eat food. If you don't have them now, get some chickens and maybe some goats. Chickens are God's multi use survival food- Eggs, Meat, fertilizer and they're easy to care for. Goats need a little more effort, but they too provide milk, meat and if you're a skills ninja, you can make cheese and soaps with their byproducts.

Goal #3 WATER! Potable water storage can be a nightmare. Let's say you wake up tomorrow and there's been an earthquake that leached gases into the ground water making it bitter and poisonous, killing off the fish and wildlife (That's a Bible example by the way... ). Now what? You have some water in your water heater and if you cut into your pipes you may come out with another 10+ gallons. Maybe you have a pond nearby that's untouched- how many others will be there and how long will it last. Can you clean the water? Plan on at least 1 gallon of water per person, per day for drinking and hygiene; that's not much considering the average American uses over 6 gallons per day. Unless you can install a million gallon enclosed reservoir at your place, you're probably not going to have enough water. So, plan on having enough to get you by for a period of time. Let's say you have 10 people in your group. You would need 100 gallons to last ten days. 300 gallons would last one month, 1800 would last 6 months. With a small investment you can get a 1000 gallon water tank online for around $800 and often less. You can also get syrup totes, the ones with the cage around them in 275 and 330 gallon sizes usually for around $50- $75. And, if you're really creative and want a project, you can build a water tower! I am seriously considering my own water tower, just looks like a cool project that would be worthwhile.

Goal #4 Hygiene - proper hygiene can save your life and need to be a part of your preps. What happens when you're out of toilet paper- GOD FORBID! Seriously though, you should stock T.P., soaps, tooth brushes, and all the other stuff you require to stay clean and comfortable for as long as possible.

Goal #5 Clothing- this one is up there because too many today rely on their under armor and silver lined under britches as a viable outdoor clothing. While these things are great for a few days, they don't last long under stress or continued use. Invest in time tested clothing products such as wool, goretex, and the like. Also invest in a couple quality pairs of boots for yourself and your family. The others in your group, maybe you can grab a few decent pairs on boots or good clothing at Goodwill or catch it on sale at Wal-Mart....

I hope this article will at least encourage you to set some clearly defined goals when it comes to planning your preps. Have fun and stay vigilant!

Aesop's Fables

One Winter a Farmer found a snake stiff and frozen with cold. He had compassion on it, and taking it up, placed it in his bosom. The snake was quickly revived by the warmth, and resuming its natural instincts, bit its benefactor, inflicting on him a mortal wound. "Oh," cried he Farmer with his last breath. "I am rightly served for pitying a scoundrel."

The greatest kindness will not bind the ungrateful.

Quotes & Jokes

Keep this philosophy in mind the next time you hear, or you are about to repeat a rumor. In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance, who ran up to him excitedly and said,

"Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied.  "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three."

"Test of Three?"

"That's correct," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it."

"All right," said Socrates.  "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness.  Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

"No, on the contrary."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued, "You may still pass though because there is a third test...... the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more.

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why Socrates never found out that Plato was banging his wife.

A Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens...

The English language has some wonderfully anthropomorphic collective nouns for the various groups of animals.

We are all familiar with a Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens, a School of fish and a Gaggle of geese.

However, less widely known is a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as well as their cousins the rooks and ravens), an Exaltation of doves and, presumably because they look so wise, a Parliament of owls.

Now consider a group of Baboons. They are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates.  And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons?

Believe it or not ....... a Congress!

I guess that pretty much explains the things that come out of Washington !

Clichs of Socialism

THIS PROPOSED DEFENSE against communism is not new, though we hear it afresh in 1961.  It has circulated in various shadings since "the cold war" began. A similar excuse was used to finance socialistic government abroad with American earned income under the give-away-programs that by now aggregate more than $78 billion: "Socialism is a good cushion against communism."

Such terms as communism, socialism, Fabianism, the welfare state, Nazism, fascism, state interventionism, egalitarianism, the planned economy, the new deal, the fair deal, the new frontier are simply different labels for much the same thing. To think that there is any vital distinction between these so-called ideologies is to miss the really important characteristic which all of these labels have in common.

An ideology is a doctrinal concept, a way of thinking, a set of beliefs. Examine the above-mentioned labels and it will be found that each is identified with a belief common to all the others: Organized police force-government-should control the creative and productive actions of the people. Every one of these labels-no exceptions-stands for a philosophy that is opposed to the free market, private property, limited government way of life. The latter holds that the law and its police force should be limited to restraint and punishment of fraud, misrepresentation, predation-in short, to invoke a common justice. According to this way of life-the libertarian ideal-men are free to act creatively as they please.

Under both the welfare state and communism, the responsibility for the welfare, security, and prosperity of the people is presume to rest with the central government. Coercion is as much the tool of the welfare state as it is of communism. The programs and edicts of both are backed by the police force. All of us know this to be true under communism, but it is equally true under our own brand of welfare statism. Just try to avoid paying your "share" of a TVA deficit or of the farm subsidy program or of federal urban renewal or of social security or of the government's full employment program.

To appreciate the family likeness of the welfare state and communism, observe what happens to individual freedom of choice. Under either label (the ideology is the same) freedom of choice to individuals as to what they do with the fruits of their labor, how they employ themselves, what wages they receive, what and with whom they exchange their goods or services-such freedoms are forcibly stripped from individuals. The central government, it is claimed, will take over. Full responsibility for ourselves is denied in order to make us dependent on whatever political regime happens to be in control of the government apparatus. Do these labels mean fundamentally the same thing?  As an exercise, try to find any meaningful distinction.

Our planners are saying, "The welfare state is the best with as much sense, "Communism is the best security against the welfare state."

We call the Russian brand of governmental coercion "communism." They, however refer to their collective as the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics."  The Russians call our brand of governmental coercion "capitalism." In the interest of accuracy and clarity, we, also, should call our "socialist."

Socialism in Russia (communism, to our planners) and socialism in the U.S.A. (the welfare state, to our planners) have identical aims: the state ownership and control of the means of production. Further, one as much as the other rests on the use of police force. In Russia the force is more impetuously applied than here. There, they pull the trigger and think later, if at all. Here, the government relies more on the threat of force and acquiescence of the citizen.

Alexis de Tocqueville predicted over a century ago the characteristics of the despotism [the welfare state] which might arise in America: "The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd."

What Has Really Changed?
What Has Really Changed?

They were in a Depressed Area. No one guaranteed them high prices for anything. Their only roads and schools were built by themselves. For Security they did their own saving, or starved.

All they had was Character. All they did was Work. All they wanted was Self Respect.

The sum of those three traits became America.

But what's going to be the sum of the traits you see today-the traits of character, or, lack of it, that demand more money for less work, put security above self-respect, pamper self pitying criminals instead of punishing them, give away resources we desperately need to protect ourselves, listen to weaklings that want government to take care of them when they should take care of themselves.

Long years of early-American self-respect and hard work built America, but the traits you see today can destroy it, in half the time.

The person who calculated this bit of information is now and has been a Professor at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown for the last forty some years.

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.

A new vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons of gas a year.

So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

The government claims 700,000 clunkers have been replaced so that's 224 million gallons saved per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.

More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars.

So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.

We spent $8.57 for every $1.00 we saved.

I'm pretty sure they will do a much better job with our health care though.

By Frosty Wooldridge

For 15 years, from the mid 1970's to 1990, I worked in Detroit, Michigan. I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I watched graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards. Trash everywhere!

Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it, and ignored it. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing, and food stamps!

With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10, and in one case, one woman birthed 24 children as reported by the Detroit Free Press, all on American taxpayer dollars.

A new child meant a new car payment, new TV, and whatever mom wanted. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson's 'Great Society' flourish in Detroit. If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing.

Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America, outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees... He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence, and arrogance. As a black man, he said, "I am the MFIC." The IC meant "in charge".

You can figure out the rest Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans.

As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state.

Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 912,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 400,000 throughout Michigan, but most work in Detroit. As the whites moved out, the Muslims moved in.

As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. Detroit suffers so much shoplifting that grocery stores no longer operate in many inner city locations. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one of our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike, and total separation from America.

Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan, paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk out rates reached 76 percent last June, according to NBC's Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50 percent illiteracy rate and growing.

Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city. In Time Magazine's October 4, 2009, "The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell, and how it can rise again," I choked on the writer's description of what happened. "If Detroit had been ravaged by a hurricane, and submerged by a ravenous flood, we'd know a lot more about it," said Daniel Okrent. "If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we'd see it on the evening news every night." Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it, if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice.

But Detroit, once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country.

Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by their dreadful decision making."

As Coleman Young's corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kickbacks and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city's death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit.

"By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit 's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services," Okrent said. "The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit today, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That's worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.

At the end of Okrent's report, and he will write a dozen more about Detroit, he said, "That's because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city's collapse, it's also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character of America in the 21st century.

If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can't find a way to get up, what does that say about America's future?"

As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner's book,"$20 Per Gallon", the auto industry won't come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit, thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America. If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit. Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.

You have already seen it in Madrid, Spain, London, England, and Paris, France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights, and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying. Multiculturalism: what a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." -- Benjamin Franklin

Here is a REAL PATRIOT look at the WORLD..... and when will we as Americans understand that ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM is a NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE?????? And needs to be treated as SUCH.
Incredible Interview With Deceased SEAL's Family

Incredible Interview With Deceased SEAL's Family

This is one of those moments that tears at your heart. Wrenching. This is the extraordinary family of Aaron Vaughn, a Navy Seal team 6 member killed by jihadists, the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six and the largest loss of life for American forces since the defensive action began after Islam's declaration of war on the America on 9/11/01.

What patriots, what strength. Good, fine, and decent and to hear them speak of this huge loss. Wow, this really is an incredible interview. Matt Lauer is incapable of conducting an interview where he has no control of the script, and the family didn't hold back in describing how much their son loved G-d, loved country and and believed that Islamic fundamentalism threatened the survival of our nation and civilization. Vaughn's father spoke of Islamic history and the threat that people remain painfully unaware of. Please watch this and send this everywhere. It's rare that the truth breaks through the iron curtain of the media -- look what it took.

Oldest Bataan Death March Survivor Passes Away

(AP) ST. LOUIS - A doctor once told Albert Brown he shouldn't expect to make it to 50, given the toll taken by his years in a Japanese labor camp during World War II and the infamous, often-deadly march that got him there. But the former dentist made it to 105, embodying the power of a positive spirit in the face of inordinate odds.

"Doc" Brown was nearly 40 in 1942 when he endured the Bataan Death March, a harrowing 65-mile trek in which 78,000 prisoners of war were forced to walk from Bataan province near Manila to a Japanese POW camp. As many as 11,000 died along the way. Many were denied food, water and medical care, and those who stumbled or fell during the scorching journey through Philippine jungles were stabbed, shot or beheaded.

But Brown survived and secretly documented it all, using a nub of a pencil to scrawl details into a tiny tablet he concealed in the lining of his canvas bag. He often wondered why captives so much younger and stronger perished, while he went on.

By the time he died Sunday at a nursing home in southern Illinois' Nashville, Brown's story was well-chronicled, by one author's account offering an encouraging road map for veterans recovering from their own wounds in many wars.

"Doc's story had as much relevance for today's wounded warriors as it did for the veterans of his own era," said Kevin Moore, co-author of the recently released "Forsaken Heroes of the Pacific War: One Man's True Story," which details Brown's experience.

"The underlying message for today's returning veterans is that there's hope, not to give in no matter how bleak the moment may seem," added Moore, whose nephew just returned from military duty in Afghanistan. "You will persevere and can find the promise of a new tomorrow, much like Doc had found."

Brown, recognized in 2007 at an annual convention of Bataan survivors as the oldest one still living, couldn't muster the strength to talk about his experiences until about 15 or so years ago, said his granddaughter, Susan Engelhardt of Pinckneyville, Illinois.

"I'm not a big military buff at all. But just reading the story about the death march and the situation in the Philippines, it's an incredible story. And incredibly sad," Engelhardt said. "He's an incredible man, and he had an incredible legacy. He came through horrible times and came out on top, rebuilding his life. But so many of those men and women triumphed."

Brown's account described the torment that came about every mile as the marchers passed wells U.S. troops dug for natives but weren't allowed to drink from once they became prisoners. Filipinos who tried to throw fruit to the marchers frequently were killed.

Brown remained in a POW camp from early 1942 until mid-September 1945, living solely on rice. The once-athletic man - he lettered in baseball, football, basketball and track in high school - saw his weight whither by some 80 pounds to less than 100 by the time he was freed. Lice and disease were rampant.

Despite the hardships, Brown focused on bright spots, including a prisoner called on to fix Japanese soldiers' radios. The prisoner managed to steal radio parts, scraping together enough components to build a functioning unit of his own. Brown helped craft a listening tube for the device, which brought the captives news from San Francisco that the U.S. actually had won a battle the Japanese soldiers were celebrating as a naval victory.

"He had this incredible spirit to live and overcome," Moore said. "Positive thinking or whatever you call it, he survived."

Born in 1905 in North Platte, Nebraska, Brown was the godson of Wild West folk hero "Buffalo Bill" Cody, who often let the boy sit on his lap and tug his beard. Brown moved with his family to Council Bluffs, Iowa, after his father - a railroad engineer - died when a locomotive engine exploded.

He studied dentistry at Creighton University in the 1920s and was called to active duty in 1937, leaving behind a wife, children and a decade-old dental practice his war injuries prevented him from resuming.

By the time the war ended in 1945, the 40-year-old Brown was nearly blind, had weathered a broken back and neck and suffered through more than a dozen diseases including malaria, dysentery and dengue fever.

He took two years to mend, and a doctor told him to enjoy the next few years because he had been so decimated he would be dead by 50. But Brown soldiered on, moving to California, attending college again and renting out properties to the era's biggest Hollywood stars, including Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland. He became friends with John Wayne and Roy Rogers, doing some screen tests along the way.

"I think he had seen so much horror that after the war, he was determined to enjoy his life," Moore said.

Is social media turning socially dangerous?
By John Blackstone

(CBS News) Flash mobs have become a global phenomenon. After starting out as an oddity, they quickly turned into a tool for organizing people with a cause or for inciting chaos. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports that some cities, like San Francisco, are cracking down.

The demonstrators who shut down part of San Francisco's subway during last night's rush hour were brought together with text messages and Internet posts.

They were protesting action taken last week when the rapid transit system blocked cell phone service in four stations. Cell service was turned off to hamper demonstrators' attempts to organize.

"Totalitarian states don't want people to communicate. And the United States is headed toward that kind of attitude, and we gotta stop it!" said protestor Sandy Sanders.

From Egypt to England, governments of every kind are facing the possibilities and perils that come with the growth of social networks and instant messaging.

In Cairo, cell phones and the internet helped demonstrators link up to overthrow a dictator. In London, looters used text messages to identify new targets.

This summer in Philadelphia, gangs used text messaging to quickly organize into so called "flash mobs," that have preyed on downtown businesses.

"We're kind of scarred with the whole flash mob-the city and South Street as well," said Philadelphia bar manager Gart Buck.

Apparently out of nowhere, crowds suddenly appear and run wild. Social media seems to have become anti-social media.

In San Francisco, BART, the transit agency, said cell phones were turned off to keep protestors from putting passengers in danger.

"It'd be the equivalent of people to start protesting on an airplane while you're in flight," said Linton Johnson, chief spokesman for BART.

But critics say the cell phone shut down mirrors attempts in the Middle East to block social media.

"You can't use communication as a tool for social control at home while criticizing foreign governments for doing the same thing," said protester Elijah Sparrow.

This all may be part of our adjustment to new ways to communicate. After all, once even the printing press was considered dangerous.

History Lesson on Your Social Security Card

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it.  Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.

Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and
card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.

An old Social Security card with the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message.

Our Social Security

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1) That participation in the Program would be Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65% on the first $90,000

3) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4) That the money the participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other

Government program, and, Under Johnson the money was moved to The General Fund and Spent

5) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Under Clinton & Gore up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put
away' -- you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US.

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?

A: That's right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it! If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. But it's worth a try.

Stunning Map: Want to See Where the World's Unrest is Spreading?

Business Insider published a map on Friday that caught the attention of Glenn Beck. And it should catch yours.

Below you'll be able to see where in the world food riots are taking place. But not just food riots, you'll also see where governments have been overthrown, where protests and other riots are occurring, where there's inflation, and even where social media has been shut down. It's a fascinating map.

But what may be the most interesting is that it seems like the unrest is spreading.

"Most of the inflation riots and protests are concentrated in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region," EconoMatters writes on the Business Insider site, "but as you can see on the Google map, they are starting to migrate into Europe, as well as China and India."

It continues:

"In the U.S., anemic growth, an ongoing housing depression, high unemployment and two rounds of quantitative easing (QE) probably have laid a pretty solid foundation for a similar riot map if Chairman Bernanke decides to grace us with QE3."

No longer, then, is the unrest localized to the "Arab Spring" countries from a few months ago. As Beck has talked about for a while, this could be the start of the "coming insurrection."

Here's the map:

And here's the legend to make sense of it:
