I am a Cpl. in the Army and just returned from Iraq. I carried my shotgun all year on my back in your shotgun scabbard, and it worked great! I was glad to have it around several times, and it proved to be an easy way to keep the shotgun handy for the squad. Thanks for your great product, and for your support of our troops!!

Another happy customer
Bob Miller

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I was in Weapons Company 3/5. The unit made us t-shirts with the 3/5 logo/emblem/crest, "Consumate Professionals". I was honorable discharged in 1999 and the t-shirt has been long-gone. I searched a couple of web site to find a shirt with the logo/emblem/crest but there was no luck. It didn't take me long to search this site before I found what I was looking for. When the shirt arrived it was better than what I expected. I love the t-shirt and wear it with pride and often. Thank you SpecialForces.com

Most Sincerely,
Bryan P.

Thank you!!!

Your Shirts are the best.

Dear SFG,

Thank you for being so prompt with my order, and the refund as well.

I thought a little constructive thoughts were in order.

The "HRT" boot knife is well constructed. I had to "hone" the edge though, both sides,to get it up to spec.

As for the "GI USMC Combat Knife"......Well, it wasn't really a K-Bar, at least not one that I've ever seen. It read "US", and above that it read "Ontario". No worries though, after I used a ceramic sharpening stone on both the small back edge and the full length edge, I'm quite pleased with them both. Oh, I almost forgot, both were very pretty well balanced.

I'll be purchasing again from you in the near future.

Ed Whiteside

Dear Special Forces

I received my order i have to say that is better than i expected! Thank you and you'll hear fom me soon.

They turned out GREAT!!!!!! Thanks. I will be back for other things.

Thanks Folks. As always you have been most polite and professional. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We have fought such a fight for a day and a night
As may never be fought again!
We have won great glory, my men!
And a day less or more
At sea or ashore,
We die--does it matter when?

In the revolution, and again in the war of 1812, the seas were covered by swift-sailing American privateers, which preyed on the British trade. The hardy seamen of the New England coast, and of New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, turned readily from their adventurous careers in the whalers that followed the giants of the ocean in every sea and every clime, and from trading voyages to the uttermost parts of the earth, to go into the business of privateer, which was more remunerative, and not so very much more dangerous, than their ordinary pursuits. By the end of the war of 1812, in particular, the American privateers had won for themselves a formidable position on the ocean. The schooners, brigs, and brigantines in which the privateers men sailed were beautifully modeled, and were among the fastest craft afloat. They were usually armed with one heavy gun, the "long Tom," as it was called, arranged on a pivot forward or amidships, and with a few lighter pieces of cannon. They carried strong crews of well-armed men, and their commanders were veteran seamen, used to brave every danger from the elements or from man. So boldly did they prey on the British commerce, that they infested even the Irish Sea and the British Channel, and increased many times the rate of insurance on vessels passing across those waters. They also often did battle with the regular men-of-war of the British, being favorite objects for attack by cutting-out parties from the British frigates and ships of the line, and also frequently encountering in fight the smaller sloops-of-war. Usually, in these contests, the privateers men were worsted, for they had not the training which is obtained only in a regular service, and they were in no way to be compared to the little fleet of regular vessels which in this same war so gloriously upheld the honor of the American flag. Nevertheless, here and there a privateer commanded by an exceptionally brave and able captain, and manned by an unusually well-trained crew, performed some feat of arms which deserves to rank with anything ever performed by the regular navy. Such a feat was the defense of the brig General Armstrong, in the Portuguese port of Fayal, of the Azores, against an overwhelming British force.

The General Armstrong hailed from New York, and her captain was named Reid. She had a crew of ninety men, and was armed with one heavy 32 pounder and six lighter guns. In December, 1814, she was lying in Fayal, a neutral port, when four British war-vessels, a ship of the line, a frigate and two brigs, hove into sight, and anchored off the mouth of the harbor. The port was neutral, but Portugal was friendly to England, and Reid knew well that the British would pay no respect to the neutrality laws if they thought that at the cost of their violation they could destroy the privateer. He immediately made every preparation to resist an attack, The privateer was anchored close to the shore. The boarding-nettings were got ready, and were stretched to booms thrust outward from the brig's side, so as to check the boarders as they tried to climb over the bulwarks. The guns were loaded and cast loose, and the men went to quarters armed with muskets, boarding-pikes, and cutlasses.

On their side the British made ready to carry the privateer by boarding. The shoals rendered it impossible for the heavy ships to approach, and the lack of wind and the baffling currents also interfered for the moment with the movements of the sloops-of-war. Accordingly recourse was had to a cutting-out party, always a favorite device with the British seamen of that age, who were accustomed to carry French frigates by boarding, and to capture in their boats the heavy privateers and armed merchantmen, as well as the lighter war-vessels of France and Spain.

The British first attempted to get possession of the brig by surprise, sending out but four boats. These worked down near to the brig, under pretense of sounding, trying to get close enough to make a rush and board her. The privateers men were on their guard, and warned the boats off, and after the warning had been repeated once or twice unheeded, they fired into them, killing and wounding several men. Upon this the boats promptly returned to the ships.

This first check greatly irritated the British captains, and they decided to repeat the experiment that night with a force which would render resistance vain. Accordingly, after it became dark, a dozen boats were sent from the liner and the frigate, manned by four hundred stalwart British seamen, and commanded by the captain of one of the brigs of war. Through the night they rowed straight toward the little privateer lying dark and motionless in the gloom. As before, the privateers men were ready for their foe, and when they came within range opened fire upon them, first with the long gun and then with the lighter cannon; but the British rowed on with steady strokes, for they were seamen accustomed to victory over every European foe, and danger had no terrors for them. With fierce hurrahs they dashed through the shot-riven smoke and grappled the brig; and the boarders rose, cutlas in hand, ready to spring over the bulwarks. A terrible struggle followed. The British hacked at the boarding-nets and strove to force their way through to the decks of the privateer, while the Americans stabbed the assailants with their long pikes and slashed at them with their cutlasses. The darkness was lit by the flashes of flame from the muskets and the cannon, and the air was rent by the oaths and shouts of the combatants, the heavy trampling on the decks, the groans of the wounded, the din of weapon meeting weapon, and all the savage tumult of a hand-to-hand fight. At the bow the British burst through the boarding-netting, and forced their way to the deck, killing or wounding all three of the lieutenants of the privateer; but when this had happened the boats had elsewhere been beaten back, and Reid, rallying his grim sea-dogs, led them forward with a rush, and the boarding party were all killed or tumbled into the sea. This put an end to the fight. In some of the boats none but killed and wounded men were left. The others drew slowly off, like crippled wild-fowl, and disappeared in the darkness toward the British squadron. Half of the attacking force had been killed or wounded, while of the Americans but nine had fallen.

The British commodore and all his officers were maddened with anger and shame over the repulse, and were bent upon destroying the privateer at all costs. Next day, after much exertion, one of the war-brigs was warped into position to attack the American, but she first took her station at long range, so that her carronades were not as effective as the pivot gun of the privateer; and so well was the latter handled, that the British brig was repeatedly hulled, and finally was actually driven off. A second attempt was made, however, and this time the sloop-of-war got so close that she could use her heavy carronades, which put the privateer completely at her mercy. Then Captain Reid abandoned his brig and sank her, first carrying ashore the guns, and marched inland with his men. They were not further molested; and, if they had lost their brig, they had at least made their foes pay dear for her destruction, for the British had lost twice as many men as there were in the whole hard-fighting crew of the American privateer.

Word of Truth
The Word of Truth
The Word Of Truth - Alive and Powerful

By Rev G.J. Rako

Satan has a plan, policy and system of deceiving the world ("Then the great dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who keeps on deceiving the entire world"...Rev 12:9, "and he will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth." Rev 20:3, 20:8 ). He is the ruler of this world (Lk 4:5-7; Jn 12:31, 14:30, 16:11; 2 Cor 4:4) and is opposed to God. Therefore, his plan is to deceive humanity with regard to the eternal truth of the living and written Word of God. His plan and policy can be entitled the "lie" for "he is a liar and the father of lies and there is no truth in him" (John 8:44). The Bible is the "truth"; Satan's system is the "lie". As the Word of Truth has many facets so, each must be countered by the lie.

Two aspects of this great lie are Satan's deceptions and counterfeits regarding first, salvation and then the Christian way of life.

The Bible states that there is one way to heaven and a relationship with the eternal God; faith alone in Christ alone. "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but, by me" (John 14:6). Now, how many other names can you think of, all of which characterize the lie. Satan in his genius has developed a system to counterfeit God's plan of salvation. We call this system religion. Religion is man by man's own efforts attempting to gain the favor of God. It is a system of works and merit on man's part. God's plan of salvation is grace. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is a gift from God, not of works, so that no man can boast" (Eph 2:8-9).

Once we become believers in Jesus Christ, our purpose is to grow to spiritual maturity and execute the unique spiritual life of the church age. We are commanded to renew our thinking, (Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. II Cor 4:16; and that you be renewed in the spirit of your thinking, Eph 4:23, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him. Col 3:10) by growing in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18), that is to replace the doctrine of demons ("But the Spirit explicitly communicates that in latter periods of time, some believers will fall away from doctrine, giving attention to deceitful spirits, even doctrines from demons. I Tim 4:1) with the thinking of our Lord (Have this thinking in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Phil 2:5).

The Word of Truth - Alive and Powerful

Often we think ourselves too smart to be deceived. If Satan deceived the woman in the garden, (Gen 3:13) he can deceive any of us. God himself created her perfect in every sense of the word. She had a perfect body and a perfect mind. Yet, Satan in the garden was able to deceive this perfect person. If perfection could fall to deception then certainly all of us (imperfection) can be deceived, and yes, we are all being deceived. Only ignorance and arrogance thinks itself safe from deception. Satan's deadly deception permeates all systems of human thought and endeavor.

There is only one way in which we can combat this deception. We must make the Word of God the priority in our lives. ("that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with every deception of unrighteousness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love for the truth with the result that they might be delivered" Thes 2:9-10). The love of the truth is God's answer for our deliverance. This is God's purpose, plan, and will for our lives. Fulfilling the command to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is the only way we will even recognize the lie. We are bombarded with the doctrine of demons all day, everyday. It is on the lips of our family, friends and associates. It comes across the television and the radio. We are continuously being brainwashed to believe the lie instead of the truth. Moreover, in so doing we have become combat ineffective, casualties in the spiritual conflict that rages around us. The Apostle Paul warns us in Romans 12:2-3; "Stop being conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renovation of your thought, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. For I say through the grace which has been given to me to every one who is among you stop thinking of self in terms of arrogance beyond what you ought to think; but think in terms of sanity for the purpose of being rational without illusion, as God has assigned to each one of us a standard of thinking from doctrine." We are told to; "put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil (Eph 6:11). There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death (Prov 14:12). "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isa 55:8-9).

Do not be deceived. Do not blame the government or others for the problems in this country, (Therefore, My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge Isa 5:13, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children). As goes the believer, so goes the nation (if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land, II Chron. 7:14). God will heal our land by the choices you make. You can make a difference. The choice is yours. Use your volition to execute the unique spiritual life of the church age, or become a casualty in spiritual combat by believing the lie. There are no accidents, coincidences or tragedies in the Christian way of life, everything happens for a reason. Everything happens for our benefit. Ignorance of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will keep your thinking in the center of Satan's deadly deception. Knowledge of God will break the chains that enslave, Jesus said, "and you shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free" (John 8:32). "and if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed" (John 8:36).

Newtown shooting:
A proactive approach to counter mass shootings

As an American citizen I am embarrassed at what our society has become. As a lawman I feel responsible for the many men, women, and children we've failed to protect who died at the hands of mass murderers.

As I watch the response to the Newtown shooting I grow even more frustrated. The focus now appears to be on gun control, arming teachers and providing trained security in schools. My frustration comes from knowing that these measures are reactive and not proactive. These two measures alone will not stop or prevent the amount of mass shootings that is occurring the United States.

Don't get me wrong, I am a strong advocate of increased security in our schools and opposed to gun control. Until we become proactive to mass shootings we will always need a great reactive response. Gun control and a well-prepared militia are reactive in nature. Those two measures will surely have some effect and will most likely save lives, but they aren't the cure for preventing mass shootings.

Fighting Domestic Terrorism
The following is my response to mass shootings and a proposed proactive approach to the largest challenge that American law enforcement faces.

The year 2003 brought us the Department of Homeland Security. It's mission to protect the United States from another terrorist attack using a concerted effort of 187 different federal agencies. This effort has for the most part provided the safety that we expect from terrorist attacks on our soil.

It's time that we take the same approach to mass shootings as we did after 911. Why can't the Department of Homeland Security focus on mass shootings, which is domestic terrorism, like they have for international terrorism?

Imagine if all the great resources from law enforcement such as Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), International Law Enforcement Education & Trainers Association (ILEETA), National Alliance of Mental Illness, American Federation of Teachers, came together with mental health scholars, law enforcement topic experts, and the 187 agencies within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a concerted approach to mass shootings in the same manner the DHS did after 9/11.

The fact is DHS has done a fantastic job thwarting terrorism since 9/11 and if they were able to concentrate their current resources along with the many resources I mentioned - as well as many I didn't mention - I believe we would get real results combating and preventing the growing numbers of mass shootings in the USA.

Changes in Our Society
My research of mass murders brings me to the conclusion that there isn't one single issue that causes the mass murder to engage in such carnage. Many issues have brought us to this point in my opinion.

A major culture shift has occurred over the past 50 years and you can only wonder if that shift has contributed in the decay of morals in our society.

Violence on the television, movies, and video games is greater than ever. Does this violence desensitize our children? The news media (and its sensational reporting of mass murders) glorifies these horrific events in the minds of unstable and mentally-ill persons.

I watched one media outlet open a nightly news story on the Aurora (Colo.) mass shooting with the opening line - complete with a vile photo - calling the shooter "The Bat Man Murderer."

Perhaps this could also be a motivating contributor to the mentally ill person fantasizing about such horrific deeds. These factors and others I didn't mention are not responsible for the increase in mass murders but do they contribute?

Cops Are Frustrated
Police in most jurisdictions respond to calls dealing with mentally ill persons daily. The sobering reality is that unless a person is clearly homicidal or suicidal cops can't do a thing with that person.

Recently, LAPD officers arrested a 24 year old man for making on line threats to carry out an attack like the one in Newtown on several local elementary schools. LAPD seized 9 guns from the suspect but the District Attorney's office had no choice but to decline filing charges because the suspect's threats were too vague. Could it be that handcuffing law enforcement may be another contributing factor in this massive problem?

Looking at the data from mass shootings from 2007-2012 it's very clear that the inability of society and law enforcement to identify and manage its mentally unstable is in my mind the biggest of all the contributing factors.

What is Deinstitutionalisation?
Deinstitutionalisation began in the early 1970's and the objective was to replace long stay psychiatric hospitals with other means such as shorter stays at community mental health services that are less isolated and the treatment of patients with modern medication.

Some psychiatrist like Leon Eisenberg feel that Deinstitutionalisation has been an overall benefit for most psychiatric patients however, many are left homeless without care (Eisenberg, Leon; Guttmacher, Laurence (August 2010). "Were we all asleep at the switch? A personal remininscence of psychiatry from 1940-2010").

Would this mass murder problem exist if the mental institutions were available like they were prior to the 1970's? This topic is too complicated to discuss in this article but you have

ask the question, could this be another contributing factor? Could the various mental health organizations and professionals contribute to a concerted effort to fight the mass murder problem? Why can't we identify those individuals with mental illness that may be a threat to society? If we did could we prevent them from committing mass shootings?

Cutting Costs
I've read articles recently where Chiefs of Police from various cities are stating they are reallocating their police resources back in the schools as a result to the Newtown shooting.

Many agencies during the past several years have been forced to abolish their school resource officers, D.A.R.E. programs and D.A.R.E. officers due to budget cuts.

When do we stop putting a price tag on safety? It's pretty obvious that uniformed officers in schools to some degree provide greater safety to our children. Perhaps this is a contributing factor also?

The following are some of the mass shootings that have occurred since 2007. These incidents have become more frequent and deadlier in past five years.

Mass Shootings in the United States, 2007 - 2012:
Newtown (Conn)27 Dead
Oak Creek (Wis.)6 Dead
Aurora (Colo.)14 Dead
Oakland (Calif.)7 Dead
Tucson (Ariz.)6 Dead
Hartford (Conn.)9 Dead
Appomattox (Va.)8 Dead
Carthage (N.C.)8 Dead
Santa Clare (Calif.)6 Dead
Fort Hood (Texas)13 Dead
Binghamton (N.Y.)13 Dead
Samson (Ala.)10 Dead
Covina (Calif.)9 Dead
Algec (Wash.)6 Dead
Omaha (Neb.)9 Dead
Blacksburg (Va.)32 Dead

Action, Without Political Rhetoric
It's time for this country to develop a strategy that will be effective in stopping this horrific problem. It must be attacked with a concerted effort of many disciplines, agencies and professions from a centralized body.

I recommend that if you agree with my assessment - and if you can add more insight to this message - that you contact your Senators and demand that Congress take swift action that will develop a real strategy like they did after 911 so we get real results.

Stay Safe,

Survival and Disaster Preparedness
The Three B's of Preparedness

Well, the election is over and it's become apparent that our Nation is continuing down a slippery slope. With all of the legislation and rhetoric being espoused from D.C. regarding gun control, ammo taxes, healthcare and the much vaunted secession debate which is continually spun and re-spun by the media; Mr. John Public is fed a steady stream of ilk which cements him in apathy. Mr. Public doesn't know what to do or believe because he's not a doer, nor is he self-motivated, but one that believes everything will pan out as long as he continues to rely on the institutions which made this Nation what it is today. If he encounters difficulty in life, he simply reports to the local welfare office for his monthly ration. Should he become ill, he simply needs to report to the local Medicaid office where he will be assigned a doctor and cared for. And, when he is one day unable to find stable employment, he simply reports to the FEMA Camp where work will be assigned and his basic needs met and his protection assured by the armed FEMA Youth Corp from the civil uprising that is outside the gates.

However I and I pray you dear reader, am a doer. We have seen the writing on the proverbial wall for some years now and daily things escalate- A super storm in the North East, an earthquake in Eastern Kentucky and in the Middle East Israel has decided to start assassinating its enemies without "international" approval. If you have not been prepping for a while now, YOU'RE ALREADY BEHIND! Preparedness isn't something that is a passing fad or an idea that can be thrown together on a whim. True preparedness isn't having enough on hand for a few days during a storm; true preparedness is a lifestyle... Something you live and DO daily. With that in mind, I have broken down this lifestyle into three categories called the "3 B's"- they're easy to remember and should you prep these items alone in abundance and in redundancy you will not only have the very core of your long term survival needs, but trade items which can be utilized as currency when there's none to be had.

The three B's are:

BEANS: Beans doesn't only stand for the wonderful things that make chili extra filling and our rear ends extra noisy, but food in general. Obviously you will want to eat should you be forced into a long term situation of self-reliance. If you believe that you will be able to live on wild edibles and wild game; you're incredibly misinformed. You will not be able to harvest enough from the wild to be completely self- reliant and in all likelihood not enough to survive just one harsh winter. Thus, you MUST supplement your wild edibles and gardening and canning with store bought canned foods, MRE's, Freeze Dried and Dehydrated food stuffs. Taking into consideration your shelter and mobility options, you may be able to have one large cache of food or several within a specified area. Regardless of the scenario, compile primarily foods, drinks mixes and yes, even liquor such as whiskey or vodka, which you consume on a regular basis NOW so that your palate is not forced to greatly adjust to "survival food". If you hate Spam- don't stock it in abundance! Use it for trade... Liquors like Vodka can be used as trade, antiseptic, poison ivy relief, a laundry freshener, insect repellant, mold killer, and to treat ear aches to name only a few!

BULLETS: Bullets obviously means ammo but I also lump knives and other tool items in this category. Stock up on common ammunition NOW. We all hear the rhetoric and it's only a matter of time before they tax the ammo so much we cannot afford it. Look at the Cook County Illinois (Chicago) with their proposed "violence tax" of $0.25 per bullet sold! So that box of 50 .22 rounds will now cost you a whopping $22.50 instead of the current $10.00 (approx. for Federal ammo at Sportsman's Guide). What is common ammunition? Well, it's not .223... Think 12 gauge, 22 long and 9mm- these are the guns you need on hand for your family and the ammo you need to stock FIRST in abundance because it's cheaper, easier to obtain now and it will be the most common you'll find should your neighborhood be taken to a FEMA camp... Some will argue that they need to grab up their .223 or 7.63x39 or 54 because the others are more common and while that rings true, the others build up faster. I mean how many .22 do you really need? You can get a box of 500 Blazer rounds for $17- stock up 5000 rounds and you're probably set for your .22 supply for some years to come. Do the same with your 12 gauge which is $23 for 100 rounds of target or bird shot at Wal-Mart. Remember; the common ammo is for small game hunting and bandit protection. You need the other goodies for the occasional big game, holding off marauders, zombies, Blue Hats, etc. Another thought to consider is picking up some barrel adapter for a 12 gauge single shot such as a New England Arms Pardner or H& R single shot. You can pick these weapons up for around $50-$60 at most pawn stores, they last forever, you can clean them easily in the field and with a small investment of $110 you could shoot 410/45LC, 9mm and .22 through your shotgun! See www.gunadapters.com for other options...

Knives as I mentioned are also lumped here because everyone needs a good knife for skinning game, doing chores or self-defense. Choose a solid fixed blade and select one that you can stake your life on. Too often people believe they can enter a survival situation with a cheap China made knife from a flea market only to have it break the first time the baton a branch with it. For me, my knife is one of the most expensive items I carry, often costing as much or more than my guns! I go for carbon steel, fixed blade that can just as easily be used for self-defense as they can for common woods chores. I like the Becker BK2 and Habilis Bushtool. But there are many other fine knives that can accomplish the same things. Shop around for the best deal, check eBay, find a trading site such as Bushcraft Trading Post on Facebook- I have upgraded most of my equipment by trading within this group and have a back up knife such as a folder or smaller fixed blade for carving or skinning tasks. Mora Knives are great little knives that can easily be re-handled when the plastic handle breaks, and they're cheap. Condor Knives also offer good quality products for a fair price. Cold Steel used to be nice and their high end models still are, but they're priced out of the common mans market. There's no reason to have to spend over $200 on a good knife... That said, cheap knives have their place in your barter bin. Keep lots around as beaters and for trade with other like-minded folks along the trail.

Band-Aids: Band-Aids stands for all your medical & hygiene supplies. You need bandages, gauze rollers, 4x4 pads, tampons, soap, and toilet tissue, sutures, anti septic ointments, antibiotics galore and whatever prescriptions you rely on. If you wear glasses, have several pairs available in hard cases. Stock up on common antibiotics and refill whatever prescriptions you're given as often as you can and just keep the meds stocked back because they most likely don't expire. There are over 122 types of commonly prescribed medicines that don't go bad, some even after 40 years of storage according to a recent FDA press release. Things that do expire are Aspirin and Tylenol, but they will still go at least 5 years according to the same FDA study! And you can get 140 tablets of 325mg Aspirin at your local Dollar Tree for yes, $1 that is made in the USA!

Additionally, get some basic medical training. A class in Wilderness First Aid will greatly enhance your ability to field treat common problems and learn to improvise when you lack proper medical equipment. Get books- REAL BOOKS, not ebooks on field medicine. When and if the power grid fails, ebooks are worthless. If you're near Kentucky and want to get some training in Wilderness/Disaster Medicine, check out my website as we offer classes on a regular basis.

I realize that it's difficult to store everything you need for 1, 2 or more years and in reality, you can't do it due to variables that cannot be foreseen or taken into account. However, you can at least prepare enough essentials to greatly affect your survivability over a long period by simply prepping the 3 B's.

And always remember- Hope for the best, prep for the worst...

Leading Concepts
Key to Success
Project Planning -

Missions, Projects, Tasks, and Goals

  •     You can only count on luck to achieve so much. For the rest of your goals and objectives you must learn to plan effectively. No mission, project, task, or goal is ever achieved to its fullest without a good plan.
  •     Before you can create a plan you must first have a Vision and recognize where you want to go. Your Vision of where you want to go and what you want to achieve, is the focal point of your plan.

Step 1: Create a Vision or Receive a Mission

Identification of goals - How do you create a vision? What do you do after you're given a task to complete from your manager? Some people seem to simply know where they want to go, where the team needs to go, where the business needs to go and where their life needs to go. Other people need to work a little harder to identify these destinations. Listen to your gut, trust your experience, and picture in your mind's eye a vision of where you want to go. Step two will fall into place and the process is the same for each vision you create or mission/task you receive.

Step 2: Draft the Heads-Up & initial time-table

A good heads-up requires covering four general sections of information: Situation, Goal, General Instructions, and Specific Instructions. The heads-up addresses everyone involved and affected. Be thorough and realistic in your completion of each section below:
  •     The Situation: An overall assessment of your current status. Once you know where you want to go, you need to conduct a good assessment of your current status. Clearly identify the current situation and be completely honest about it; tell it like it is. Remember, identifying the current situation is the first major factor of leadership. Don't forget to include others' perspectives and use all your available resources (PET: People, Equipment, Time) to accurately determine the current status. The situation should also include an assessment of any known obstacles at that time. Identifying known obstacles allows you and your team to pro-actively plan and prepare for dealing with them as you set out to accomplish your goal.
  •     The Goal: A definitive statement of what is to be accomplished and the deadline (No Later Than (NLT) time) for completion. Clearly identify the goal and be specific about what is to be accomplished. Be sure the goal statement is clear, concise and to the point. Take time to ensure everyone on the team succinctly understands it forwards and back, and that there are no misunderstandings within the team; ensure everyone is on the same page.
  •     General Instructions: For Groups, Sub-Teams, and other Departments -- Identify your PET (People, Equipment & Time). In this section you will begin to identify, in general terms, a priority of events and the resources needed to take the first steps towards successfully completing your plan and putting it into action. Provide direction to your team and team leaders (anyone who leads a sub-team) by providing guidance about preparations needed, information to be gathered, others that must be informed, and so on. Select pieces/tasks you can delegate to those most suited to accomplish them successfully and independently. Issue assignments to others including completion times. At this point, you also need to establish a tentative schedule or time-table for everyone to follow. The time-table can and likely will be modified along the way. However, an initial time-table is always needed early in the planning process because it helps keep people on track and focused. At a minimum the time-table must reflect the No Later Than (NLT) time of completion for the overall task/goal and the current time now. These are your two most critical times, the difference between them is all the available time you have to work with. Start with the overall goal NLT time and 'backwards plan' to your current time. Sequentially fill in the tasks that need to be accomplished along the way and when each is to be completed by. The time-table will serve as a measurement tool that helps you and your team stay focused. It will be used to chart progress and raise flags if you fall behind or get off course. You may find it helpful to identify a team member to be responsible for time-table updates, progress, changes, and alerts along the way.
  •     Specific Instructions: Key Individuals and Team Leaders -- In greater detail, identify what you need to share with your key team leaders including any specific tasks you intend to delegate to them. Be sure they know your expectations and how you can be contacted should they need your assistance, support, or additional information.

"Heads-up" Summary:
What you have just created is your initial plan of what is to be accomplished, by whom and when. Now it's time to gather the team and communicate it. Once communicated, ask key leaders to paraphrase (brief-back) information to verify complete understanding.

Sub-teams, departments and groups should be busy completing tasks delegated to them in the General Instructions section of your initial plan. This may include gathering and/or disseminating information, organizing teams and collecting/identifying additional resources that are needed for the successful completion of the goal. Key individuals and team leaders are ensuring all the pieces are coming together, paying specific attention to the time table and staying focused and completing any specific instructions that you delegate to them.

While team members are completing their General Instructions tasks, you are completing the "execution" piece of the forthcoming detailed plan. You are pulling all the data together, outlining in detail the road map, and identifying who will drive, when, and how far.

Step 3: The Detailed Plan

The detailed plan contains five sections: Situation, Goal, Execution, Support, & Communications.
  •     The first two sections are essentially repeats of the tentative / Heads-up plan, with updates, modifications, changes and added details that have occurred since the Heads-up was first communicated to the team.
  •     Execution - this section is your main responsibility. It is the most crucial piece of the plan and it is essential that the entire team understand it. A good Execution section of any plan contains thorough: Details, Sequential Organization, Identification of Roles & Assignments, Plans for dealing with known obstacles, Rally Points (when and how we'll regroup if we deviate), Focus on Accountability
  •     Support - this section identifies other areas in the organization that may offer assistance to the team or be a resource that can be utilized if necessary. This section informs the team of who, what, where, when, and why and how to obtain needed services and support.
  •     Communications - this final section includes contact information and identifies proper communication channels, methods, and mediums.

In summary, the process works something like this:
  •     Create the Vision or receive a Mission from your manager.
  •     Complete the Heads-up. This is an information tool used to give everyone involved a "Heads-Up" and get the ball rolling. Therefore, at a minimum, it must include whatever information or directions required and a time-table to track your progress. Begin with the end in mind.
  •     Communicate to the team. Bring everyone together and communicate the information.
  •     Finalize the Detailed Plan. The detailed plan includes everything involved: who, what, when, where, why and how-start to finish, for successful completion of your mission/task/goal.
  •     Communicate the Detailed Plan. Share the detailed plan with everyone involved.
  •     Monitoring and Progress. Keep the whole thing moving forward and measure progress as compared to your time-table.
  •     Remember these key items as you proceed:
  •     Be sure everyone on the team shares the same understanding of all aspects of the plan.
  •     Spot check to ensure delegated tasks are completed and to required standards.
  •     Do "Brief-Backs" - ask team members to summarize their role and other aspects and details of the plan.

  •     As a leader you must ensure successful completion of the mission - it is your responsibility.
  •     At times you may lead; at other times you may follow.
  •     You may be required to remove barriers and obstacles that get in the way. You may be a liaison to your manager, providing status updates along the way.
  •     And don't forget your coaching responsibilities. As a leader you must ensure that you are growing your people for tomorrow's challenges.
  •     To be a successful leader you need to know how to plan.
  •     Finally, remember: People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan.

Lead the way!

Warrior's Wisdom
Never Go To War,
Unless You Know How to Win the War

One of the most interesting treatises ever written on warfare dates from this period: Sun Tzu's The Art of War, written probably around the mid-fourth century B.C. In thirteen relatively short chapters, this brilliant philosopher-general displayed a strategic and tactical insight as unorthodox as it was astute, and the work undoubtedly caused neighboring rulers much uneasiness. Often standing at odds with Greco-Roman military doctrines (as we believe we know them), it is essentially a demand for an indirect approach to war at political, strategic, and tactical levels.

By Sun Tzu's time, war had become"...a matter of vital importance to the State: the province of life or death, the road to survival or ruin." Such are disadvantages of war to the state that it should be avoided whenever possible by clever diplomacy (which should utilize high-level espionage). Able statesmanship, by isolating and demoralizing the potential enemy, should defeat him before the combat stage is reached. In SunTzu's mind, "...to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill." Sun Tzu recommended that a state go to war only if the diplomatic offensive failed. But a state should do this only after making a careful estimate of the situation to determine if human, physical, and doctrinal factors favored rapid victory, "...for there has never been a protracted war from which a country has benefited."
If a state decided on battle, the able general must pay closest attention to such factors as terrain, weather, and enemy plans, "...for the crux of military operations lies in the pretence of accommodating one's self to the designs of the enemy." Therefore: "...Know the enemy, know yourself; your victory will never be endangered. Know the ground, know the weather; your victory will then be total."

Sun Tzu insisted that both strategy and tactics be fashioned with the knowledge that "...all warfare is based on deception": When near, make it appear that you are far away; when far away, that you are near." The able general must maneuver his army in such a way as "...to make the devious route the most direct and to turn misfortune to advantage." The commander who understands the strategy of the indirect approach "will be victorious."

Having "shaped" his enemy by his own foresight, by control of his forces, by extreme mobility (aided by native scouts) and by careful terrain appreciation, the general next deployed two tactical elements: the cheng, or orthodox force, normally used to hold the enemy, and the ch'i, or unorthodox force, normally used to attack the enemy's flanks and rear. These two forces "...are mutually reproductive: their interaction as endless as that of interlocked rings. Who can determine where one ends and the other begins?" The one complements the other, and if the tactical commander correctly employs them, "...his potential is that of a fully drawn crossbow; his timing, the release of the trigger."

Aesop's Fables
A miser sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily. One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it."

Quotes & Jokes

A large group of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they heard a voice call from behind a sand-dune say, "One Green Beret is better than ten Taliban."

The Taliban commander quickly sent 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun-battle broke out and continued for a few minutes, then silence. The voice then called out,

"One Green Beret is better than a hundred Taliban soldiers."

Furious, ... the Taliban commander sent his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gun fight commenced. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The Green Beret's voice called out again, "One Green Beret is better than one thousand Taliban."

The enraged Taliban commander mustered a thousand fighters and sent them over the dune. Cannon, rocket, and machine gun fire rang out as a huge battle is fought.  Then silence.

Finally one wounded Taliban fighter crawled back over the dune and with his dying words told his commander, "Don't send any more men, it's a trap. There are two Green Berets."

"To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it."

    What Has Really Changed?

    What Has Really Changed?
    Dec. 1965
    The words men live by:
    • Patriotism
    • Loyalty
    • Self-respect
    • Decency
    • Work
These are the labels of the ideals which built this country, saved the world, still feed the hungry and support the old and sick. These things are the only hope of the future.
Courts may seem to condone treason, labor leaders downgrade hard work, theaters show filth, politicians smirk at dishonor, and too many sneer at self-respect.
But in spite of all these, there are still hundreds of thousands of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; thousands who work without pay for Red Cross and Family Service; there is still Junior Achievement; there are churches so crowded they hold two services every Sunday; still Americans who volunteer for dangerous action in the Armed Services; still hundreds of thousands too self-respecting to go on relief so long as they can get any work of any kind; there are still countless boys who get up at 5 in the morning to carry newspapers or shovel snow or run errands; still hundreds of thousands of men and women who do two jobs so they can help buy an education for a son or a home for old parents.
Yes, somehow, in spite of the greedy who what something for nothing, most of America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. Don't anyone try to change it.

USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Retires l Photos

After 51 years of distinguished service
the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) will be inactivated on Dec. 1, 2012, during a ceremony at Norfolk, Va. The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and currently longest serving ship in the U.S. Navy, the Enterprise has seen action in U.S. conflicts ranging from the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War to Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. When launched in 1961, no one envisioned the Enterprise serving 51 years. She was designed for 25. After deactivation, the Enterprise's nuclear reactors and fuel will be removed and she will be towed to Washington state for scrapping. Currently, no plans exist for the U.S. Navy to commission another Enterprise, although a petition has been created to name the next U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, CVN 80, USS Enterprise.

Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Gulf War Commander, Dies at 78

    H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the retired general credited with leading U.S.-allied forces to a victory in the first Gulf War, died today at age 78.

The man who Defense Secretary Leon Panetta today called "one of the great military giants of the 20th century" died in Tampa, Fla., where he lived in retirement, the Associated Press reported.

"The men and women of the Department of Defense join me in mourning the loss of General Norman Schwarzkopf, whose 35 years of service in uniform left an indelible imprint on the United States military and on the country," Panetta said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the Schwarzkopf family in this time of sadness and grief."

Schwarzkopf, called "Stormin' Norman" because of his reportedly explosive temper, led America to two military victories: a small one in Grenada in the 1980s and a big one as de facto commander of allied forces in the Gulf War in 1991.

"'Stormin' Norman' led the coalition forces to victory, ejecting the Iraqi Army from Kuwait and restoring the rightful government," read a statement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War. "His leadership not only inspired his troops, but also inspired the nation."

Schwarzkopf's success during that fight, also known as Operation Desert Storm, came under President George H.W. Bush, who through his office today mourned "the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation."

After Gun Control: A Chilling Historical Perspective

You can't have a new world order and a totalitarian system when people have guns. In ALL socialistic/communistic/dictatorships, the FIRST thing they did was issue gun control, then a total gun ban.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

If you value your freedom, please spread this antigun-control message to all of your friends.

Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! It's time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us.

You're not imagining it, history shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people.

    Interesting slant on things

    Pretty Amazing!

The world's largest army... America's hunters!
I had never thought about this... hunter
A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin...
Allow me to restate that number: 600,000

Over the last several months,Wisconsin's hunters became the eighth largest army in the world. More men under arms than in Iran .

More than France and Germany combined.

These men deployed to the woods of a single American state, Wisconsin, to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed. That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan's 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now returned home safely.  Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.  And then add in the total number of hunters in the other 46 states.

    It's millions more.

    The point?

America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting... it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

That's why all enemies, foreign and domestic, want to see us disarmed.

Food for thought, when next we consider gun control.

Overall it's true, so if we disregard some assumptions that hunters don't possess the same skills as soldiers, the question would still remain... What army of 2 million would want to face 30, 40, 50 million armed citizens???

For the sake of our freedom, don't ever allow gun control or confiscation of guns.

It starts with assault weapons, then handguns and finally rifles and shotguns. Just a wee bit at a time until were helpless from foes foreign and domestic. No tools to hold in check power hungry government officials.

The majority of UN members are pushing for gun control and that will be the day our 2nd amendment rights will be taken away.

You're sound asleep when you hear a thump outside your  bedroom door. Half-awake, and nearly  paralyzed with fear, you hear muffled  whispers. At least two people have broken into your house and are moving your  way.

With your heart pumping, you reach down beside your bed and pick up your shotgun. You rack a shell into the chamber, then inch toward the door and open  it.

In the darkness, you make out two shadows. One holds something that  looks like a crowbar. When the intruder brandishes it as if to strike, you raise the shotgun and fire.

The blast knocks both thugs to the floor. One writhes and screams while the second man crawls to the front door and lurches outside. As you pick up the  telephone to call police, you know you're in trouble.

In your country, most guns were outlawed years before, and the few that are privately owned are so stringently regulated as to make them useless. Yours was never  registered.
Police arrive and inform you that the second burglar has died. They arrest you for First Degree Murder and  Illegal Possession of a Firearm.

When you talk to your attorney, he tells you not to worry: authorities will probably plea the case  down to manslaughter.

"What kind of sentence will I get?" you ask.

"Only ten-to-twelve  years," he replies, as if that's nothing.

"Behave yourself, and you'll be out in seven."

The next day, the shooting is the lead story in the local newspaper. Somehow, you're portrayed as an eccentric vigilante while the two men you shot are represented as choirboys. Their friends and relatives can't find an unkind word to say about them.

Buried deep down in the article, authorities acknowledge that both "victims" have been arrested numerous times. But the next day's headline says it all: "Lovable Rogue Son Didn't Deserve to Die."

The thieves have been transformed from career criminals into Robin Hood-type pranksters..

As the days wear on, the story takes wings. The national media picks it up, then the international media. The surviving burglar has become a folk hero. Your attorney says the thief is preparing to sue you, and he'll probably  win.

The media publishes reports that your home has been burglarized several times in the past and that you've been critical of local police for their  lack of effort in apprehending the suspects. After the last break-in, you told your neighbor that you would be prepared next time. The District Attorney uses this to allege that you were lying in wait for the burglars.

A few months later, you go to trial. The charges haven't been  reduced, as your lawyer had so confidently predicted. When you take the stand, your anger at the injustice of it all works against you.

Prosecutors paint a picture of  you as a mean, vengeful man. It  doesn't take long for the jury to convict you of all  charges. The judge sentences you to life in prison.

This case really happened. On August 22, 1999, Tony Martin of Emneth, Norfolk,  England, killed one burglar and wounded a second. In April, 2000, he was  convicted and is now serving a life term..

How did it become a crime to defend one's own life in the once great British Empire? It started with the Pistols Act of 1903.

This seemingly reasonable law forbade selling pistols to minors or felons and established that handgun sales were to be made only to those who had a license. The Firearms Act of 1920 expanded licensing to include not only handguns but all firearms except shotguns..

Later laws passed in 1953 and  1967 outlawed the carrying of any weapon by private  citizens and mandated the registration of all  shotguns. Momentum for total handgun  confiscation began in earnest after the Hungerford mass shooting in 1987. Michael Ryan, a mentally disturbed man with a Kalashnikov rifle, walked down the streets shooting everyone he saw. When the smoke cleared, 17 people were dead.

The British  public, already de-sensitized by eighty years of "gun  control", demanded even tougher restrictions. (The seizure of all privately owned handguns was the objective even though Ryan used a  rifle.)

Nine years later, at Dunblane, Scotland, Thomas Hamilton used a  semi-automatic weapon to murder 16 children and a teacher at a public school.

For many years, the media had portrayed all gun owners as  mentally unstable, or worse, criminals. Now the press had a real kook with which to beat up law-abiding  gun owners. Day after day, week after week, the  media gave up all pretense of objectivity and demanded a total ban on all handguns.

The Dunblane Inquiry, a few months later, sealed the fate of the

fe  sidearms still owned by private citizens. During the  years in which the British government incrementally took away most gun rights, the notion that a citizen had the right to armed self-defense came to be seen as vigilantism. Authorities refused to grant gun licenses to people who were threatened, claiming that self-defense was no longer considered a reason to own a gun. Citizens who shot burglars or robbers or  rapists were charged while the real criminals were released.

Indeed, after the Martin shooting, a police spokesman was quoted  as saying, "We cannot have people take the law into their own hands."

All of Martin's neighbors had been robbed numerous times, and several elderly people were severely injured in  beatings by young thugs who had no fear of the consequences. Martin himself, a collector of antiques, had seen most of his collection trashed or stolen by  burglars.

When the Dunblane Inquiry ended, citizens who owned handguns
were given three months to turn them over to local authorities. Being good British subjects, most people obeyed the law. The few who didn't were visited by police and  threatened with ten-year prison sentences if they didn't comply.

Police later bragged that they'd they'd taken nearly 200,000 handguns from private citizens.

How did the authorities know who had handguns? The guns had been registered and licensed. Kinda like cars.

The Second Amendment V Gun Control
"[T]he government may not descend to the evil of preventive law. The government cannot treat men as guilty until they have proven themselves to be, for the moment, innocent. No law can require the individual to prove that he won't violate another's rights, in the absence of evidence that he is going to. But this is precisely what gun control laws do. Gun control laws use force against the individual in the absence of any specific evidence that he is about to commit a crime. They say to the rational, responsible gun owner: you may not have or carry a gun because others have used them irrationally or irresponsibly. Thus, preventive law sacrifices the rational and responsible to the irrational and irresponsible. This is unjust and intolerable. The government may coercively intervene only when there is an objective threat that someone is going to use force. ... Statistics about how often gun-related crimes occur in the population is no evidence against you. That's collectivist thinking. The choices made by others are irrelevant to the choices that you will make. ... The government may respond only to specific threats, objectively evident. It has no right to initiate force against the innocent. And a gun owner is innocent until specific evidence arises that he is threatening to initiate force. Laws prohibiting or regulating guns across the board represent the evil of preventive law and should be abolished."
    --columnist Harry Binswanger

"The gun has been called the great equalizer, meaning that a small person with a gun is equal to a large person, but it is a great equalizer in another way, too. It insures that the people are the equal of their government whenever that government forgets that it is servant and not master of the governed. When the British forgot that they got a revolution. And, as a result, we Americans got a Constitution; a Constitution that, as those who wrote it were determined, would keep men free. If we give up part of that Constitution we give up part of our freedom and increase the chance that we will lose it all."

The Battle of the Barents Sea
Last hurrah of the surface Kriegsmarine

Unlike the Kriegsmarine's U-boats, which he embraced, Adolf Hitler had a love-hate relationship with its surface fleet, one complicated by his own irresolution and ignorance regarding how to use it. The German navy's relationship with the Fhrer was further muddied by a power struggle pitting surface ship proponents, led by the Kriegsmarine's commander in chief Grand Adm. Erich Raeder, against U-boat advocates led by that branch's commander, Vice Adm. Karl Dnitz.
Grand Adm. Erich Raeder And Adolf Hitler

An increase in British commando raids in Norway in 1942 convinced Hitler that the Allies planned to invade his Fortress Europe through that country. He ordered all the Kriegsmarine's capital ships to take station in Norway's fjords as a counter to that threat. When the Allies resumed Lend-Lease convoys to the Soviet Union in December following their suspension after the Convoy PQ-17 disaster, the stage was set for Operation Regenbogen ("Rainbow"), the Kriegsmarine's interception of Allied convoys to Murmansk.

Regenbogen was more than a plan to sink Allied shipping. It was Raeder's attempt to reverse the declining fortunes of the surface fleet, reduced to conducting a Fabian strategy of a fleet in being. With Regenbogen, when a convoy was located the pocket battleship Ltzow and heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper and six destroyers would depart from their northern Norway base at Altenfjord and separate into two equal-number groups. The Hipper group would attack the convoy from the north, drawing the convoy's escorts to it and causing the merchant ships to head south where, instead of safety, they would encounter the Ltzow group and be destroyed.

The tactical plan for Regenbogen was brilliant. All it needed was a bold and resolute commander to execute it. Unfortunately, Regenbogen's commander Vice Adm. Oskar Kummetz was neither. Or, perhaps more correctly, his impediment to be such a commander was the order from Hitler that forbade him from taking risks with his ships.
