When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I was in Weapons Company 3/5. The unit made us t-shirts with the 3/5 logo/emblem/crest, "Consumate Professionals". I was honorable discharged in 1999 and the t-shirt has been long-gone. I searched a couple of web site to find a shirt with the logo/emblem/crest but there was no luck. It didn't take me long to search this site before I found what I was looking for. When the shirt arrived it was better than what I expected. I love the t-shirt and wear it with pride and often. Thank you for being so prompt with my order, and the refund as well.

I thought a little constructive thoughts were in order.

The "HRT" boot knife is well constructed. I had to "hone" the edge though, both sides,to get it up to spec.

As for the "GI USMC Combat Knife"......Well, it wasn't really a K-Bar, at least not one that I've ever seen. It read "US", and above that it read "Ontario". No worries though, after I used a ceramic sharpening stone on both the small back edge and the full length edge, I'm quite pleased with them both. Oh, I almost forgot, both were very pretty well balanced.

I'll be purchasing again from you in the near future.

Leadership Verses

Management

Leadership has become one of the most misunderstood terms in our country. It has become unimportant in decision making at most every level right up to choosing the leaders of our country. Most know good leadership from bad leadership when they experience the consequences of it both good and bad but they have no idea how important leadership is and what it is. Leadership plays a key role at every level in our lives starting in the home, and to name a few examples: in business, in sports, in the Military, in our local government and all the way up to the Nation.   

 

This month's topic I chose because management has infiltrated into leadership the same way political correctness has infiltrated into our lives. When leadership is replaced by management freedom is sacrificed. People are so confused between management and leadership that even in most of the books I read and see the two are blurred together. Leadership in concept is simple but in application it is difficult and is learned not something one is born with. I have thought a lot about leadership and management over the years and I have developed this criterion to help you separate management from leadership and understand the two. I think you will find it quite simple.

 

"Leadership is for people and management is for things."

 

In other words you manage things and lead people. If you were stuck on a life raft with some people the leader would manage the things and lead the people. Usually he would begin by delegating the management of things for example rationing the water, the food, arrange for safe keeping for any medical supplies and what other equipment that may be on hand but when it comes to the people he must lead them. People are not things to be managed  they are all individuals with certain strengths, weaknesses and feelings so a leader must recognize all those factors assigning tasks based on an individual's abilities and situations, he must  encourage, motivate and give confidence or hope to his crew and pull them into a team for their best chance to survive.

When you are treating people like things or slaves you are managing. That is the boundary I am establishing to determine the difference between leadership and management. Many times a leader must be tough but he does it because he cares about his people where as a manager is only concerned with rules not what's right or wrong or best in any given situation.      

 

Leadership starts with family. In the home parents have the authority over their children and they must take care to exercise that authority carefully without abusing it. Authority demands leadership and leadership is what keeps authority from being abused. Through good leadership on the part of the parents children should learn respect for authority, self discipline and responsibility. Children are not things and should not be managed they should be lead. If the parents fail in this the children will become society's burden. As a nation we are always one generation away from failure so each generation must be taught to carry itself not coddled like so many parents do. They say they want it easy for their children but the best thing they can do for their children is to teach them to stand on their own and give them a good example of leadership in the home. I grew up watching Leave it to Beaver and that would be a good example of how Leadership and authority works in the home.

There are leaders and there are followers. In any organization, there are those in authority and those under their authority.

 

What should those under authority be looking for? They should be looking for vision, goals, guidance, and encouragement, setting an example for motivation, inspiration, instruction, fairness, justice, trust, confidence, acknowledgement, reward and impersonal love or to put it in one word Leadership, something that has become rare and confused with management.

As a person who has been placed in many different leadership roles, I faced many challenges but the biggest challenge of all was not to take the easy way out and to manage. Management is great for things like supplies, ammo, water, etc like in my example but not for people. People were designed to be led not managed. A leader must know his people, their strengths and weaknesses and mold a winning team around that knowledge, while still keeping in mind what is best for the individual as well as the team and the mission.

 

When people are managed they are treated like things and this translates into tyranny. The motto of management in my day was CYA "cover your ass" which produced the following results.

 

  • Risk avoidance
  • Ass kissers
  • People with lesser ability being promoted over people with ability
  • Clicks or you have to be a member of the club to get promoted
  • Political correctness
  • ROE (Rules of Engagement)
  • Measured force in fighting wars
  • No win policies
  • No clear or rational objectives

And so on...

 

These things started back with the decision to fire MacArthur for trying to win the Korean War which started the destruction of our Warrior Ethos in our field grade ranks and higher and have perpetually forced good soldiers to leave the service or become corrupted by the micro management of the military instead of leadership which is the most effective weapon on the battlefield. For you few leaders that have risen above our ugly system maintaining the principals of a true leader I applaud you and your men are lucky to serve under you. 

 

We have been at war for about 10 years straight now and the grunts on the ground have done a remarkable job checking the enemy with all the cards stacked against them with no leadership from above. They have no clear mission I am not sure even the President of the United States knows what he is trying to achieve other than his priority of being reelected.  His ambiguity in describing what we are to achieve has positioned himself as a politician instead of a commander in chief. If the highest ranking officer in the military cannot explain the mission how could one expect a sergeant or captain to carry it out. In Afghanistan are we trying to defeat the Taliban? Are we nation building? Are we trying to create a strong central democratic form of government?  Are we staying there because Pakistan has nuclear weapons? Are we trying to keep the Taliban from taking back over? Do we think we can negotiate a solution? Do we think we can buy off the people with money and favors? And on and on.

 

Senator Lugar expressed concern that the logic of our strategy seems circular we do and we do not have to nation build; we do and we do not have to defeat the Taliban. Joint Chief of Staff Mullen said we are trying to nation build and Obama said we are not. When he was in command General McChrystal said we are trying to win over the support of the Pushtun people and Biden said we are not. Are we withdrawing troops in mid 2011 Biden says yes. Gates says no. Obama says yes, but no, but it depends on the situation. I could go on and on and on filling a novel with examples of our nonexistent or incompetent leadership, but I think you get the point. In order for us to be successful Leadership must have a vision and inspire everyone to achieve that vision or goal. Unfortunately we have no leadership or vision only management and politics.

 

Management has plagued our soldiers in many ways, but one that really gets my hackles up is second guessing our soldiers or Monday morning quarterbacking and ROE (rules of engagement). While in dangerous engagements with the enemy it is not uncommon while bullets are flying around, while our soldiers are being wounded, to discuss legalities. Did you see a weapon? Did you see who is shooting at you? Are there civilians around? Some of our soldiers think the enemy knows our ROE better than we do. Soldiers often have to get permission for every move or request for support, indirect fire, close air support, etc. And sometimes in life and death situations they are denied by Arm Chair Warriors and Power Point Rangers sometimes going through four layers or more in the chain of command to get a critical decision which can take up to 20 minutes or more at times creating many lost opportunities and on some occasions our own soldiers lives.

We should understand that much of the authority today in business is related to an evil that came to the United States some 60 or 70 years ago called management from European Countries with no understanding of the freedom that made America great and it is not a good thing, it has destroyed leadership in the United States.

  

Leadership made great corporations, and great prosperity that once existed historically in these United States. Leadership is not the same a management as I have mentioned more than a few times. The people that brought it here only had knowledge of the tyrannical and socialistic ways of Europe. How unfortunate for our country for so many to marvel at the failure of Europeans' to ignore our own greatness and the role Leadership and freedom played in its successes.  Leadership is a great thing, management is an evil thing. Many corporations have been destroyed by management although there are exceptions to the rule, but this must be understood these are very, very rare exceptions. Management does not come even close to leadership. Management is prejudiced, listens to the wrong people and gets involved with those who cater to them as a result when management replaces leadership then the tragedy occurs in every part of public life.

 

In the LAPD, the Cream Rarely Rises to the Top

I am now in the twilight of my police career, having been around longer than only a few dozen of my fellow officers. For reasons I will explain below, I have not risen far in the organization, and from my vantage point near the bottom of the chain of command I have watched as some of my contemporaries and some of those who followed me rose through the ranks to become captains, commanders, and deputy chiefs. I recall with some embarrassment the navet I displayed when, as a young cop back in the early '80s, I assumed - as you may also - that one had to be possessed of above average intelligence and keen law enforcement skills to ascend to the lofty levels of the department. It didn't take long before I was disabused of this notion.

 

I spoke with a colleague not long ago, a man I had worked with in an earlier assignment and whom I knew to be an outstanding police officer and a first-rate field supervisor. He had taken the lieutenant's exam, and I asked him how he had fared when the final list for promotion was published. "Not well," he said. "I probably won't make it on this list." When I asked him where he thought he had stumbled in the process, he just shrugged and said, "I guess I'm not in the Club."  By Jack Dunphy April 30, 2011

 

In the Bible Colossians 3:22 (corrected translation), it says, "Not with eye service as men pleasers." Here was a phrase invented by the Apostle Paul "men pleasers" it denotes one who tries to please men at the sacrifice of principle. In other words it means a person who has authority who is trying to please people at the sacrifice of principle. This has become acceptable behavior in our day largely due to apathy and ignorance.

 

You could sum it up in one word 'fawning' attempting to win favor from influential people by flattery. I like the expression ass kisser which we used in my day or here are some others; a brown noser or a sycophant full of flattery, obsequiousness an ambitious person, apple-polisher, boot licker which are all synonyms. There are some others I dare not mention. The point is a manager is vulnerable to people who compliment and flatter him and if he is fooled by this he destroys his leadership ability.

 

We had a common saying in the Military.  "It's True Sh__t (crap) does float to the top"

         

As I mentioned before there are many books on management because schools offer degrees related to management. (I've read as much as I could without throwing up) they are a disaster because they cause people with no ability to be promoted by managers above their peers which destroys an organization. Today it happens in everything, in the military, in business, in Government etc. A leader cannot respond to men pleasers (Ass Kissers) you have to watch out for them because they're ambitious; often if they cannot succeed in winning you over they'll turn on you doing things behind your back. In the Army and in civilian life I have seen people do this keeping notes waiting for an opportunity to stab someone in the back for their own advancement or to gain favor. My advice on this is the 3 Eyes:

  • 1 Eyes off self
  • 2 Eyes off others
  • 3 Eyes off things

Keep your eyes on your job doing the best you can. You may or may not get treated fairly but you will have maintained honor and integrity loyalty to the truth and any mature warrior should be able to live with that. But I also say what goes around comes around so don't get down on their level.

 

For the Warrior the issue is not whether it was good or bad authority the issue is can you stand up to it? Can you deal with bad authority, injustice and unfairness and having worked hard and done well having an ass kisser be promoted over you given privileges you do not have. This often will occur in life but if you can take it, or not react that is the trait of a mature warrior.

 

This also often occurs in corporations too because someone comes in as a manager and they know how to ass kiss and court people and even allege certain things about others that are not true, all the while they do not even know their own job. This happens all the time.

 

Leadership would never promote someone above their peers when they were incapable of handling something that others have handled well. This is one big difference between management and leadership. There is no place for the pettiness that comes from management.

 

Leadership is needed today as never before in these United States. Whatever you do as those who are under unfair, unjust and I will call that "management" do your job remembering the 3 eyes and do it right and honorably and then you'll be operating under the principle, of honor and integrity with Warrior Ethos. One of the winning coaches in College basketball ball use to say something like It's not whether you win or lose but did you do your best and if you did be satisfied with that because that's all you can do.

Leaders beware don't listen to the wrong people, don't fall for those who say that's not the way we do things. For he who does wrong shall receive the consequences or as I like to say "what goes around comes around." Ask yourself who gets punished more severely? The answer the leaders or men in higher rank. Some examples are leaders who have authority and use that authority erroneously.  If they try to force under authority things that are false and no good eventually it will catch up to them and there will be severe consequences. It is far more difficult to be a leader then a follower. Leadership is destroyed when the mechanics of management are replaced by leadership its like leaning on a splinter instead of a post of solid oak.

 

Leaders give from your own resources and power, be fair and just. Don't ever, ever promote someone unqualified above those who have been there longer and are more qualified. When these rules are broken this is the start of the destruction of one's leadership.

 

Unfair treatment often happens because a leader doesn't like someone. Whoever gave the leader the privilege of disliking anyone? Leadership has the privilege of treating everyone with the same fairness. This is a huge problem and the difference between leadership and management. Leadership never bases decisions on their feelings never taking things personal or having likes and dislikes as management does.

 

When you are a leader there are always those who will be out to get you. The best advice I can give you is forget it and focus on doing your job to the best of your ability. I've been there and eventually things had a way of working out for me in time.

If you've never heard of this insane tactic ....

 

At first V1's were shot down by gunfire. Optimum range was inside 200yds, which was marginal for survival. Many planes were damaged and quite a few pilots killed. Basically at such high speed and low altitude a plane had to fly though the explosion and hope.

 

With the high risk of being blown up some of the best pilots started tipping the V1's wing, because of damage to wing tips they later developed a tactic of disrupting the aitflow by placing their wing very close to the V1's wing, causing it to topple. 

 

Not every pilot did this. At night this was not possible, the flame from the V1 blinded the pilot to everything else, though some Mossie pilots flew past closely in front of the V1, again causing it to topple. The thought of doing this at 450mph, 4,000 feet above the ground, at night and being blinded gives me the willies.

The Prepared Believer 

  

God uses the prepared believer.  Your preparation as a Christian soldier requires very little from you.  God is the one who accomplishes the work of your preparation.

As with Salvation, God does the work and we derive the benefit.

 

Eph 2:8  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

 

Romans 3:20  because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

 

Romans 3:28  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

 

Galatians 2:16   nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

 

Titus 3:5  He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

 

God is perfect, His plan is perfect, and His perfect plan includes you.  God is immutable.  He is consistent in everything, absolute and unchanging.  No merit in salvation means no merit in the Christian way of life. 

 

The only way we can be prepared is to fulfill the command, to grow in grace and attain spiritual maturity.

 

2 Peter 3:18   but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity.  Amen.

 

Romans 12:2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 Cor 14: 20 ... but in your thinking be mature.

 

Eph 4:13-14  Until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature, which belongs to the fullness of Christ.  As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming

 

I know we all wish to accomplish great things for God, but in God's plan He does the work.  He does the "great things" and He gets the credit.  Most Christians today are the ones accomplishing the work and sadly, they are taking the credit.  This type of thinking is not part of the Christian way of life.  It is not part of the unique spiritual life of the church age. 

 

Too many Christians believe that they must "do" great things for God in order to prove their salvation.  Salvation was accomplished once and for all at the cross.

 

Romans 6:10  For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

 

1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit

 

Hebrews 7:27  who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did onceforall when He offered up Himself.

 

Hebrews 9:12  and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place onceforall, having obtained eternal redemption.

 

There is absolutely nothing you can do for God.  God is everything, you are nothing.  If you think God needs your help then, He is not The God.  Go find some religion to join so you can help the false god therein.

 

The greatest reward you will receive in this life is being used by God.  And, yes, God uses the prepared believer.  In order to be prepared you must love God.  You must fulfill the greatest command.

 

Deuteronomy 6:5  "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 

 

MT 22:34-40   But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.  One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"  And He said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'  " This is the great and foremost commandment.  "The second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  " On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

 

 

 

MK 12:28-34   One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?"  Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'  "The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  There is no other commandment greater than these."  The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that He is One, and there is no one else besides Him; and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."  When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."  After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions.

 

You cannot love someone that you do not know.  In order to love God you must first know Him.  The only way you can know God is through the scripture.  God is only revealed in the Bible.  Therefore, you must consistently avail yourself to the accurate teaching of the Word of God.  This is spiritual growth.  This is how you fulfill, 2 Peter 3:18, Rom. 12:2, 1Cor. 14:20, and Eph. 4:13-14.

 

Just as there are no human works in salvation, there are no human works in the Christian way of life.  There are no human works in God's plan except the works that God accomplishes through the prepared believer.  The works that God accomplishes through you are known as divine good.  The works you accomplish in the power of the flesh are human good.  All of these human good works will be burned as worthless at the evaluation seat of Christ.

 

1Cor  3:10-15   According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it.  But each man must be careful how he builds on it.  For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,  each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.  If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.  If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

 

Notice your works (human good) will be burned up, but you will not lose your salvation.  You will lose rewards in eternity.  However, if you accomplished divine good, your works will remain and you will receive a reward.  The believer in eternity, with rewards, is the prepared (spiritually mature) believer on earth.

AMBUSH ON PATROL 

 

Ambush tactics are nothing new to law enforcement. One of the more notable "bait and ambush" attacks against law enforcement is the 1997 bombing of a familiy planning clinic in Atlanta Georgia.

 

Eric Rudolph  set off two bombs in the space of an hour at the Northside Family planning  clinic. The first explosion ripped out part of a wall and the second injured six people who had gone to the scene, including federal agents and a television cameraman.

 

The first blast, came at around 0930 which damaged the building and an hour later another device exploded from inside a trash dumpster in the parking lot wounding an ATF agent, who had been sent to investigate the first explosion.

 

Preventing and/or do to protect against such an attack:

A heightened state of "situational awareness" is helpful whether you're responding to patrol runs or simply speaking to a citizen. A heightened state of situational awareness can greatly maximize your chances for survival anytime you're in uniform. Situational awareness alone won't stop active aggression such as an ambush however, it will allow for a proper reaction to an attack and it may save your life.

If your ambushed a natural instinct is to take cover, that however, is most likely what your attacker is counting on and planned for as you take a defensive position.

 

Sometimes you must go opposite of your instincts and meet the danger head on. Law enforcement may need to learn what I learned on military patrols twenty years ago, "anticipate where contact with the enemy is probable, recognize ambush points and overwhelm your enemy with a counter attack".

 

We do this every day:

Situational awareness is something that veteran cops key on every time they sit in a public restaurant on duty or off duty. They always position themselves so they have a full view of all that is occurring within the building, so they have the tactical advantage if an encounter occurs.

 

This mind set is normal to a good cop and he may not realize that he is doing it but a great cop knows and he uses his situational awareness to recognize and plan for all encounters and ambushes on the streets.

 

Large Cell Terrorist Attacks:

At any given moment an attack such as the Pakistan bombing could occurr in the United States. The pre planning of this event was signficant and succesfull. Their ambush tactics provided them the tactical advantage and they gained ground quickly. Once you lose that ground gaining it back in an urban environment doen't come easy. The best prevention of allowing your adversary to get a foothold is thwarting the attack during the ambush phase. That's the critical point where the mission fails or is succesful.  

 

Domestic Terror Attacks:

A domestic attack was thwarted twelve months ago here in Michigan. The Hutaree militia planned to kill a local law enforcement officer and then attack the law enforcement officers who gathered for the funeral. Nine members of Hutaree had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Detroit on attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, teaching the use of explosive materials, and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. The indictment said that the Hutaree planned to attack and ambush law enforcement vehicles during the funeral procession using improvised explosive devices.

 

Taliban and Al-Queda Police Ambushes:

Another danger comes from the possiblity of attacks from international terrorists. The Taliban and Al-Queda has conducted devastating attacks on police posts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Taliban tended to be far more aggressivewhen attacking Afghan positions. The Taliban repeatedly over-ran remote police posts, held them for a short time, andthen fled before reinforcements arrived. In Farah province in October 2007, insurgentsover ran three police posts simultaneously. They killed a number of police and districtofficials, burned down the buildings and then fled.

 

This type of attack would be devasting if it occurred in American police departments. We all remember how one lone gunman entered a Detroit Police Precinct and created havoc this past year. Imagine the difficulty of nuetralizing a squad of armed terrorists that assault your police department or local mall.

 

Now that OBL has been captured and killed we must not let our guard down, if anything we must be more vigilent and prepared for such attacks.

Special Forces has a very rich history.  Our origins go all the way back to WWII and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).  There are even roots to Special Ops history that go back to people and events back before the American Revolution and even times before that.

Colonel Volckmann In June 1952, Special Forces was born from the vision and tireless work of Colonel Aaron Bank and Colonel Russell Volckmann.  Both men served during WWII in the OSS, Colonel Bank serving in the European theater and Colonel Volckmann served in the Pacific.
 
Colonel Volckmann was a West Point graduate, and after the fall of Bataan in 1942, he retreated into the hills and organized a resistance force among  the local indigenous, llocanos.  He trained and commanded his force in the western and northern coasts of Luzon, launching attacks against the Japanese.  During the U.S. invasion of the Philippines in January 1945, Volckmann's guerrillas attacked the retreating Japanese forces far behind the lines, capturing bases and air fields, thereby allowing the American advance to proceed at a lightning pace.

Colonel BankColonel Bank served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Office of Strategic Services (which would be disbanded by Harry Truman in 1946 but in less than a year provide much of the cadre and expertise for the new CIA). The OSS conducted both espionage operations (SI Branch) and "special operations": sabotage and guerrilla warfare (SO Branch). Bank was assigned to SO Branch, and led one of the OSS's operations, Operation Jedburgh, into France.

In that operation, Bank and two Frenchmen, an officer and a radio operator, parachuted into southern France in July 1944, and linked up with French guerillas of the Gaullist FFI. They liberated a number of towns, despite tense relations with the Communist Francs Tireurs et Partisans. In September, Bank left, mission accomplished, and reported back in to London.

In late 1944 and early 1945, Bank led "Operation Iron Cross", which evolved into a plan to capture or kill Adolf Hitler. The original plan was for a company of men disguised as German soldiers to jump in near Innsbruck in present-day Austria. There they would conduct sabotage and induce German soldiers to desert. The leaders of the unit were OSS men: Bank, a lieutenant, and two sergeants. The rank and file were prisoners of war from Nazi Germany who volunteered to fight against the Nazis. Many of them were Communists; in the end, Bank had weeded out 75 of his original 175 volunteers. They were paid sixty cents an hour, and a promise of a death benefit if they were killed.

Bank could not pass as a German, so his cover called him "Henri Marchand," a French Nazi from Martinique. The hope was that any Gestapo men asking questions wouldn't recognize a Martinique accent.

When General William Donovan, head of the OSS, was briefed on the progress of Iron Cross, he changed the mission. Hitler had been threatening that the Nazi leaders and armies would withdraw into the National Redoubt -- the mountainous area on today's German-Austrian border. This was exactly the target of Iron Cross, and Donovan ordered a new mission: "Tell Bank to get Hitler." The men of Iron Cross began training in raid and snatch techniques -- their goal was to capture Hitler alive and deliver him to a war crimes tribunal.
Iron Cross was canceled almost on the eve of execution: intelligence showed that the National Redoubt was a figment of Hitler's imagination, that Hitler was not in the target area, and that Nazi resistance was collapsing across Europe. A disappointed Bank had to thank his men for trying -- and send them back to their POW cages. Bank thought that one problem with Iron Cross was State Department aversion to setting so many armed Communists loose in an area destined for Allied occupation.

From Europe, Bank traveled to China, where he trained for an abortive mission into Indochina, and later, in September 1945, did parachute into Laos with a combined SI/SO team. During these postwar mopping-up operations, he met Ho Chi Minh, for whom he always retained great respect. The name, Special Forces, originated from the OSS, operational teams in the field from 1944 period of time.

Colonel Bank and Colonel Volckmann, teamed up and worked tirelessly to convince the Army to adopt its own unconventional guerrilla-style force. They had an ally in Brigadier General Robert McClure, who headed the Army's psychological warfare staff in the Pentagon. Bank and Volckmann convinced the Army chiefs that there were areas in the world not susceptible to conventional warfare - Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe especially - but that would make ideal targets for unconventional harassment and guerrilla fighting. Special operations as envisioned by the two men, and by Bank in particular, were a force multiplier: a small number of soldiers who could sow a disproportionately large amount of trouble for the enemy. Confusion would reign among enemy ranks and objectives would be accomplished with an extreme economy of manpower. It was a bold idea, one that went against the grain of traditional concepts, but by 1952 the Army was finally ready to embark on a new era of unconventional warfare.

Bank established the new organization's headquarters at Fort Bragg, recruiting former OSS officers, airborne and ranger troops, and seasoned war veterans.

The Army allocated 2,300 personnel slots for the unit and assigned it to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In the spring of 1952, Bank went to Fort Bragg to choose a suitable location for a Psychological Warfare/Special Forces center. He chose a remote area of the post known as Smoke Bomb Hill, not knowing that within ten years it would become one of the busiest places in the Army.

He then went about assembling a cadre of officers and NCOs who would serve as the hard-core foundation of the new unit, and who would act as a training staff to perpetuate and flesh out the fledgling organization. Bank didn't want raw recruits. He wanted the best troops in the Army, and he got them: former OSS officers, airborne troops, ex-Ranger troops and combat veterans of World War II and Korea. They were an unusual lot, a motivated bunch, men who were looking for new challenges to conquer - the more arduous the better. Virtually all spoke at least two languages, had at least a sergeant's rank, and were trained in infantry and parachute skills. Most were familiar with the customs of their target countries. They were all volunteers willing to work behind enemy lines, in civilian clothes if necessary.

That last item was no small matter. If caught operating in civilian clothes, a soldier was no longer protected by the Geneva Convention and would more than likely be shot on sight if captured. But these first volunteers didn't worry about the risks: they were long accustomed to living with anger. Many of them had come from Eastern Europe where they had fled the tyranny of communist rule at the end of World War II.

After months of intense preparation, Bank's unit was finally activated June 19, 1952, at Fort Bragg. It was designated the 10th Special Forces Group, with Bank as commander. On the day of activation, the total strength of the group was ten soldiers - Bank, one warrant officer, and eight enlisted men. That was soon to change.

Within months, the first volunteers reported to the 10th Group by the hundreds as they completed the initial phase of their Special Forces training. As soon as the 10th Group became large enough, Bank began training his troops in the most advanced techniques of unconventional warfare. As defined by the Army, the main mission of Bank's unit was "to infiltrate by land, sea or air, deep into enemy-occupied territory and organize the resistance/guerrilla potential to conduct Special Forces operations, with emphasis on guerrilla warfare." But there were secondary missions as well.

They included deep-penetration raids, intelligence missions and counterinsurgency operations. It was a tall order, one which demanded a commitment to professionalism and excellence perhaps unparalleled in American military history. But Bank's men were up to the challenge.
They had been through tough training before; their airborne and Ranger tabs were proof of that. But working for Special Forces was not going to be simply a rehash of Ranger techniques. If the volunteers didn't appreciate the difference between Rangers and Special Forces when they first signed up, they did when they went through Bank's training. As Bank put it, "Our training included many more complex subjects and was geared to entirely different, more difficult, comprehensive missions and complex operations."

The Rangers of World War II and Korea had been designed as light-infantry shock troops; their mission was to hit hard, hit fast, then get out so larger and more heavily armed units could follow through, much the same as the modern Ranger force. Special Forces, however, were designed to spend months, even years, deep within hostile territory. They would have to be self-sustaining. They would have to speak the language of their target area. They would have to know how to survive on their own without extensive resupply from the outside.

After less than a year and a half together as a full Special Forces group, Bank's men proved to the Army's satisfaction that they had mastered the skills of their new trade. So on November 11, 1953, in the aftermath of an aborted uprising in East Germany, half of the 10th Special Forces Group was permanently deployed to Bad Tolz, West Germany. The other half remained at Fort Bragg, where they were re-designated as the 77th Special Forces Group.

In the past I have worked with historians of the United States Special Operations Command, (USSOCOM), the United States Army Special Operations Command, (USASOC), the Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) at Fort Bragg, and the Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC).  I am a documentary film producer, and have spent much of my time producing military history documentaries for the DOD and the private sector.   I have been fortunate enough to interview many of our most significant historical figures from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and more recent periods of our history.

I am currently interviewing many of our Special Forces and Special Operations members of the Special Operations Association (SOA), who are comprised of service members from the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, as well as members from some of our Ally countries.

Combat Survival

  

Prepared to Share

 

When planning your survival or home preparedness strategies you must take into account the need to share your resources with others. Many of us become focused on immediate family survival in the face of a crisis, those primarily within our own household; and for good reason because planning a long-term strategy for 4-6 people can be a daunting task to those with little to no expendable income.

 

However, in the face of an extended rebuilding campaign within your region due to natural or man-made disasters we must prepare to share our gear with those less fortunate and yes, even the zombie that didn't prepare when you told them to. Not only will sharing be a good way to develop your survival network post SHTF, but it will also gain you access to the barter system without sacrificing your primary gear. So, for this article we'll focus on a secondary preparedness program designed specifically for sharing and bartering.  

 

Typical items we've all been given on holidays or birthdays are those knick-knack items from friends and relatives. Things that they know we like such as knives, sleeping bags, camp chairs, etc. but are generally cheap trinkets of poor quality given to us out of their need to give us a gift on that special occasion so they don't feel guilty. Instead of tossing such items or selling them in the annual yard sale, start amassing them; buy them up when you see them on sale. Things like flashlights for $1 or those cheap pocket knives or even flea market knives you get good deals on, toss them in a 5 gallon bucket or some other storage container marked as a barter bin.

 

Same goes for cheap sleeping bags, boots, tents, etc. I have picked up several decent backpacks at the local Goodwill for $2-$3 each.  I've gone as far as to fill them with some knives, matches, aluminum canteens and other essentials just to give someone in need or possibly barter with someone down the line. Keep those tarps too small to be useful now, plastic drum liners, cheap machete's, cheap or broken firearms and other odds and ends. Yes, I realize this could turn you into a pack-rat junk czar, but stay on point and have an idea of what the gear is good for and don't go overboard. Having a few full sets of gear available such as a pack filled with a cheaper alternative version of your good stuff  will not only be a good barter item but an excellent back up for your cousin that unexpectedly pops in and plans to hunker down with you.

 

For example, I may have a Kelty Mountaineer style pack with a 4 season tent, ranger compass, extra boots, clothes and a SOG Knife, a few Fire Steels and storm-proof matches in my pack along with ammo and other things I can squeeze in. In my barter pack I'll have a Walmart "Outdoors" backpack with some dollar tree flash lights, strike anywhere matches and maybe one of those magnesium blocks from the flea market grandma gave me. I'll also throw in there a 6x6 tarp that I planned on covering my grill with and an M-Tech knife I was given as a gift. I also have some shirts and boots in there I found in the back of the closet along with some cans of food. I hope you see where I'm going with this...

 

Why store in backpacks? Because I don't want people hanging around for too long! I didn't plan on feeding too many extra bellies in my preparedness plans and by giving someone a pack filled with some essentials you're subconsciously preparing them to move on...

 

Food items that you would typically not store up can often be found very cheaply at flea markets and discount grocers and sometimes even donated to you for your "outreach" project (hint, hint) from local food banks like Dare to Care, etc. Ramen noodles, canned beans, fruits and meats will all be valuable commodities to everyone at some point. But, if you have been prepping beforehand as you should have been, these extra items will hold high value to your friends and neighbors that failed to follow your example. Who knows you just might be able to save a life.

Historically, establishment of most private and public academic institutions for the young was, first and foremost, for the purpose of reading the Bible. Indeed, most Christian denominations established schools, colleges and universities to train clergy. The nation's oldest academic institution, Harvard University, was established in 1636 and named for Puritan minister John Harvard. A 1643 college brochure identified Harvard's purpose: "To advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches." Harvard alumnus John Adams (class of 1755) wrote in 1776, "It is the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated seasons, to worship the SUPREME BEING, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe." In his Dissertation on Canon and Feudal Law, Adams wrote, "Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right, from the frame of their nature, to knowledge, as their great creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge; I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers."

 

Yale, the nation's third oldest academic institution, was established in 1701 by royal charter "wherein Youth may be instructed in the Arts and Sciences [and] through the blessing of Almighty God may be fitted for Publick employment both in Church and Civil State." Yale alumnus Noah Webster (class of 1778), wrote in the forward of his 1828 Webster's American Dictionary, "In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed. ... No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people."

 

Princeton was founded by "New Light" Presbyterians of the Great Awakening for the purpose of training their ministers. Jonathan Dickinson, a Presbyterian minister and leader of the Great Awakening of the 1730s, was the school's co-founder and first president. Princeton alumnus James Madison (class of 1771) observed, "The belief in a God All Powerful wise and good, is so essential to the moral order of the world and to the happiness of man, that arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources nor adapted with too much solicitude to the different characters and capacities impressed with it."

 

Virginia's College of William and Mary, founded in 1693, was Anglican. Baptists founded Rhode Island College, now Brown University, in 1764. Congregationalists established Dartmouth College in 1769 to extend Christianity to native populations.

 

Founder Benjamin Rush wrote, "[T]he only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments."

But teaching reliance upon Essential Liberty as "endowed by our Creator," in support of Rule of Law as affirmed by "the Law of Nature and nature's God" and as outlined in our Declaration of Independence, is in direct opposition to those who would advocate for tyrannical rule of men.

 

Benjamin Franklin asserted, "A nation of well informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins."

 

The importance of government education as a tool for denying Rule of Law has been advocated by generations of tyrants. In order to achieve totalitarianism, they must undertake to expel God from the academy.

 

Karl Marx wrote, "The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a mother's care, shall be in state institutions at state expense." His student Vladimir Ilyich Lenin concurred, "Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted." As Josef Stalin understood, "Education is a weapon, whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed."

Leftists also understand that the earlier socialist indoctrination is applied, the greater its force, and the greater the likelihood it will stick.

 

Obama promised in his inaugural speech that he would "transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age." It was a promise that he'd previously fleshed out in "The Audacity of Hope," the second of his self-congratulatory autobiographies: "It's time to redesign our schools -- not just for the sake of working parents, but also to help prepare our children for a more competitive world. Countless studies confirm the educational benefits of strong preschool programs, which is why even families which have a parent at home often seek them out."

 

Likewise, its sunrise-to-sunset year-round application could provide further assurance of successful indoctrination. "The same goes for longer school days, summer school, and after school programs," writes Obama.

 

To that end, according to the Communist Party Education Workers Congress, "We must create out of the younger generation a generation of Communists. We must turn children, who can be shaped like wax, into real, good Communists. ... We must remove the children from the crude influence of their families. We must take them over and, to speak frankly, nationalize them. From the first days of their lives they will be under the healthy influence of Communist children's nurseries and schools. There they will grow up to be real Communists."

This is how many otherwise responsible citizens rationalize their own line-up at the federal trough. Farmers see businessmen getting their tariffs. Businessmen observe subsidies to farmers. Labor leaders eye them both for copying. Angelenos see the Gothamites getting federal aid, and Miamians read about federal handouts to Seattleites. Such logrolling of special interests grows, and "how to get ours" become the "economic" talk of the nation. That a naughty feeling often attends this weak excuse is understandable.

 

For obvious reasons, this bromide evokes no sense of guilt in socialists-those who would communize society: federal handouts fit perfectly into their design of substituting government control for personal responsibility. The feelings of remorse are confined to individuals who think of themselves as conservative or libertarian. Unable clearly to diagnose their inconsistency, they at least suspect themselves of being Janus-faced.

 

To bring this political picture into focus, let's substitute one man for the majority, and a few for the millions, otherwise sticking to an accurate matching in structure. A man - call him Robin Hood - aspires to the role of God. He observes that the people in his shire come out unequally when freely exchanging the things they grow, the stock they raise, the items they make. Some fare a lot better than others. It never occurs to this Caesar of the countryside that dullness, laziness, indolence - as against ingenuity, initiative,  industry - play a hand in these discrepancies. He sees only the inequalities and in, egotistical disdain, only his system for erasing them.

 

So, bow in hand, our self-appointed hero takes the produce from all unto himself. He'll dole it out as he sees the need. "Social justice" of his variety will be served!

 

The socialist in the shire - those who believe in the communalization of the product of all by coercion - may well be expected to hail this man and his tools of force.

 

But, what are we to think of those who have a libertarian bent, of those who pay lip service to the free society, and then go on to assert, "We're paying for it, so we might as well get our share." What sincerity or depth can be ascribed to their lip service? Do not actions speak louder than words? By their actions, are they not, most effectively, giving support to the socialistic design? Endorsing the welfare state? Upholding Caesarism?

 

Frederic Bastiat, more than a century ago, referred quite accurately to the above behavior as legal plunder, and explained in simple terms how to identify it:

 

"See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime." 1

 

No individual with libertarian pretensions can, in good conscience, advocate legal plunder. What, then, should be his position? He has only one way to turn. Bastiat, the libertarian teacher, was again helpful: "Then abolish this law without delay, for it is not only an evil itself, but also it is a fertile source for further evils because it invites reprisals. If such a law - which may me an isolated case - is not abolished immediately, it will spread, multiply, and develop into a system."

 

Today, in the U.S.A., such law is not the isolated exception. It is already "a system." This system of plunder derives much of its support from individuals who do not subscribe socialism but who say, "We're paying for it, so we might as well get our share." Economic Education.

Master Sgt. Benjamin F. Bitner was born July 4, 1973, in Hagerstown, Md. and was a 1991 graduate of Greencastle Antrim High School in Greencastle, Pa.

 

Bitner enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1991 and attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection in 1999. Later that year he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as an engineer sergeant.

He joined Company C, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), headquartered at Fort Bragg, N.C., in 2003.

 

He deployed in support of various operations across the globe, including but not limited to: Operation Flintlock, Africa, 2001; Operation Nectar Bend, Africa, 2004; Task Force Falcon in support of operations in Kosovo, 2001 - 2002; Operation Desert Spring, Kuwait, 2002; Operation Iraqi Freedom and four deployments to Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) with Company C.

 

His military education includes: Track Vehicle Repairers Course, Single Channel Ground Airborne Radio Systems Operator Course, Basic Infantry Course, Basic Airborne Course, Long Range Surveillance Leader's Course, Warriors Leader Course, Special Forces Engineer Sergeant's Course, Basic Non-commissioned Officer's Course, Advanced Non-commissioned Officer's Course, Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape Course, Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course, Special Forces Sniper Course, Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance Target Analysis and Exploitation Technique's Course, Special Forces Master Breacher's Course, Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant's Course, Military Free-Fall Course, both Summer and Winter Basic Mountain Warfare Courses and the United States Army Special Operations Command Mountaineering Master Trainer's Course.

Irena Sendler 

 

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena.  During WWII , Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. 

She had an 'ulterior motive'.  She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews (being German). 

 

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids). 

 

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. 

 

The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. 

 

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

 

 

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. 

 

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. 

 

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family.  Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted. 

 

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize . 

She was not selected.  President Obama won one year before becoming President for his work as a community organizer for ACORN and Al Gore won also--- for a slide show on Global Warming.

WHAT A TOUCH OF CLASS LOOKS LIKE.   


There's  a group of ladies in the Dallas area who make and stuff 
neck pillows for soldiers coming through DFW airport. 

They go to the airport and meet the incoming planes every week 
and greet the soldiers coming back for a few weeks R&R, give 
them a pillow, tell them they pray for them, and thank them 
for their service. 

The lady who took the pictures said everyone was so surprised 
to see George and Laura Bush recently just standing quietly in 
the waiting area with others who come to meet the troop 
planes.  


She said it was amazing to watch the faces of the soldiers light up

in recognition when they spotted them, and that many came over

to speak and shake  hands.

Anti-Gun Senator Shoots Intruder

 

 

State Senator R.C. Soles (D - NC) Long time Anti-Gun Advocate State Senator R.C. Soles, 74, shot one of two (minority) intruders at his home just outside Tabor City , N.C. about 5 p.m. Sunday, the prosecutor for the politician's home county said. 

The intruder, Kyle Blackburn, was taken to a South Carolina hospital, but the injuries were not reported to be life-threatening, according to Rex Gore, district attorney for Columbus, Bladen and Brunswick counties.. 

 

The State Bureau of Investigation and Columbus County Sheriff's Department are investigating the shooting, Gore said. Soles, who was not arrested,declined to discuss the incident Sunday evening. 

 

"I am not in a position to talk to you," Soles said by telephone. "I'm right in the middle of an investigation." 

 

The Senator, who has made a career of being against gun ownership for the general public, didn't hesitate to defend himself with his own gun when he believed he was in immediate danger and he was the victim.

 

In typical hypocritical liberal fashion, the "Do as i say and not as i do" Anti-Gun Activist Lawmaker picked up his gun and took action in what apparently was a self-defense shooting. Why hypocritical you may ask? It is because his long legislative record shows that the actions that he took to protect his family, his own response to a dangerous life threatening situation, are actions that he feels ordinary citizens should not have if they were faced with an identical situation. 

 

It has prompted some to ask if the Senator believes his life and personal safety is more valuable than yours or mine. 

 

But, this is to be expected from those who believe they can run our lives, raise our kids, and protect our families better than we can.

We do not need double standards in this country! 

 


New Army Ammo Puts Mean in 'Green'

ABERDEEN, Md. --- Tell a Soldier he's loading "environmentally friendly" ammo into his M4 mag and he might be skeptical about whether it's as effective as its lead counterpart.

But Army officials here say the new M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round -- with its steel core instead of a toxic lead slug -- is far more effective than the current round, doubling the effective range and for the first time giving M4-wielding Joes the ability to penetrate barriers once reserved for higher-caliber rounds.

"There's a stigma among Soldiers about something that's 'green,' " said Lt. Col. Jeff Woods, the Army's small caliber ammunition product manager. "This is a clear case where making something environmentally friendly works for us."


Leveraging the science of 120mm tank rounds, Army engineers at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. designed a 5.56mm rifle cartridge that incorporates a jacketed copper slug pushing a sharpened steel "penetrator."  Testers showed during a May 4 demonstration here that the round can punch through quarter-inch steel armor out to 300 yards with ease.

 

"You normally wouldn't even think of a guy with a 5.56 going against a target with this kind of armor," said the Army Research Lab's Jim Newill, who lead the team that developed the M855A1 round. "Now we've more than doubled the ability to perforate [armored] targets."

 

Originally the effort to field a lead-free small caliber round stemmed from Clinton-era edicts to clean up military firing ranges seeping toxic lead residue into area ground and water. After frustrating attempts to develop alternatives with expensive materials such as tungsten and bismuth, the Army found steel and copper did a better job at a lower price.

 

In 2007, responding to reports from the field that current rounds weren't deadly enough, the Army jump-started efforts to make a more lethal round that was also environmentally friendly. In less than two years, the steel-tipped M855A1 design was shown to be more effective against a wider range of targets than the decades-old M855 round -- or even than the Army's 7.62 round, officials here said.


Citing security concerns, engineers were cagey about describing how the new round works when it hits a human body. But Woods said it has "more consistent" effects on soft targets than the current round, or even the 7.62mm bullet.

 

"I can't say that it's more lethal than the M855. That depends on how the round hits a target," Woods said, emphasizing that accuracy is paramount. "But what I can say is that you'll see the same effects every time with this round. And we can confirm that it is superior to the [M80] 7.62 on soft targets."

 

About 30 million of the new EPR rounds have been fielded to Soldiers in Afghanistan. The service plans to replace all their lead-cored bullets with the new M855A1 "black tip" rounds by the end of this year, though older "green tip" rounds will likely remain in the inventory for a while, officials said.

The Army also plans to field a 7.62 version of the "black tip" ammo for M240 machineguns and M110 rifles by the end of 2012.

 

"There's nothing out there right now that can perform like this [M855A1] round on this wide a range of targets," Woods said.

 


Afghans Say Taliban Using Child Bombers

KABUL, Afghanistan - The orders from their religious teacher were clear: Go to Afghanistan, strap on a suicide vest and kill foreign forces.

With that, 9-year-old Ghulam Farooq left his home in Pakistan with three other would-be boy bombers and headed into eastern Afghanistan.

They were told there would be two members of the Taliban waiting for them at the Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar province. Instead, members of the Afghan intelligence service who had been tipped to the boys' plans arrested them at the border.

 

"Our mullah told us that when we carried out our suicide attacks, all the people around us would die, but we would stay alive," Farooq said Saturday, sitting inside a juvenile detention facility in the Afghan capital.


He was one of five alleged suicide bombers - all boys in adolescence or even younger - whom the Afghan intelligence service paraded before reporters, photographers and cameramen at a news conference on May 7 in an effort to turn public opinion against the Taliban.

 

Farooq and the other boys are being held at a detention facility that resembles a vocational training center. There are no armed guards, and the facility has classrooms and playgrounds. During a visit to the center, Farooq was smiling and said he was going to school and that he and the other boys were being given the opportunity to learn carpet weaving, carpentry and other handicrafts. The facility has dozens of boys, most detained in criminal cases.

 

Afghan intelligence officials say the Taliban turns to young boys because they are easier to recruit than adults and tend to believe what recruiters tell them.

"The Taliban are recruiting children in their ranks and using them to carry out suicide attacks in Afghanistan," Latifullah Mashal, a spokesman for the Afghan intelligence service, told reporters. "These innocent children have been cheated and sent to Afghanistan."

 

The Taliban denies the accusation. In a statement issued a week ago, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said the insurgency's code of conduct prohibits young people from staying in military centers with fighters. Instead, he alleged that the youths were working for the Afghan police and public and private security companies.

 

"These children have joined the ranks of the enemy on the enemy's luring, taking advantage of their ignorance and lack of knowledge," he said.

In fact, the use of children to conduct suicide bombings is not a new tactic in the nearly decade-long war, Afghan officials say.

 

Confirmed cases are rare, and it's difficult to identify the bodies of bombers who blow themselves up. But Mashal said there had been a recent increase in the use of children.

 

In the past two months, he said, child suicide bombers executed two deadly attacks. The arrest of Farooq and three other boys allegedly heading toward suicide attacks came earlier this month, and Mashal said authorities are holding a fifth child who was about to carry out a bombing but then decided against it.

 

Farooq, clad in a dark green Afghan-style shirt, said he was persuaded to become a suicide bomber by a mullah in a mosque near Peshawar, Pakistan. His story could not be independently verified.

 

"He told us that there are infidels in Kabul and we must carry out suicide attacks against them," the boy said. "We were taught how to use a suicide vest in the Spin Mosque in Kher Abad near Peshawar where we live."

"I want to go home," he added. "I miss my family."

 

Ten-year-old Fazel Rahman, another member of the foursome, corroborated the story at the news conference, even using similar phrasing to Farooq's.

 

"The mullah in the mosque told us that the infidels were in Kabul and everyone should go for jihad" and that the bombers themselves would survive, Rahman said.

 

He said he was happy to be alive but wanted to return home. "Our families don't know where we are," he said.

 

Afghan authorities are discussing whether to charge or release the boys.

The most recent suicide attack carried out by a child occurred on May 1. Police said a 12-year-old blew himself up in a bazaar in the Barmal district of Paktika province in the east, killing four civilians and wounding 12 others.

Among the dead - and the likely target of the attack - was Sher Nawaz, head of a new district council in the Shakeen area of Paktika province, the provincial governor's office said.

 

On April 13, a 13-year-old suicide bomber detonated his explosives vest in Asmar district of Kunar province. The blast in eastern Afghanistan killed 10 people, including five schoolboys and an influential tribal elder, Malik Zareen, who was a former military commander who supported the Afghan government.

 

Police said the target of the attack, which occurred at a local meeting of tribal elders was Zareen, a leader of Afghan forces during the Soviet occupation in the 1980s.

 

The Afghan Ministry of Education called the suicide bombing an "anti-Islamic and inhumane act." Afghan President Hamid Karzai also condemned the bombing, saying that by killing tribal leaders, the attacker was trying to silence the voice of the Afghan people.


Earlier this year, under the direction of a mullah in Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan, 14-year-old Noor Mohammad donned an explosives vest and traveled to a coalition outpost in Andar district. But he backed out.

He, too, was among the youths brought before reporters and photographers in Kabul.

 

"The Taliban taught me how to use a pistol, how to push the button of a suicide vest and drive a motorbike," the boy told reporters. "On the day that I had to carry out the suicide attack, I decided not to. I joined with the (pro-government) forces and I didn't carry out the attack."

He never explained why he changed his mind.

 

There have been other cases. On Feb. 26, the intelligence service announced the arrests of a Pakistani boy and two teenagers - one from Afghanistan and the other from Pakistan - who claimed they had been coerced into becoming would-be suicide bombers.

 

Akhtar Nawaz, 14, from South Waziristan in Pakistan, said six men in a vehicle nabbed him off the street while he was walking home from school.

"They told me that I had to carry out a suicide attack," Nawaz told reporters. "I told them I didn't want to, but they forced me to go with them. They told me that there were foreigners in Afghanistan and if I carried out a suicide attack, I would go to heaven."

 

Nawaz said the men took him to various locations and taught him how to shoot a pistol and detonate a suicide vest. His mission, he said, was to shoot guards at an Afghan military compound in Khost province, then to ride inside on a motorcycle and detonate his explosives. He said he was told that if the detonation button on his vest didn't work, he should detonate the explosives by shooting himself with the pistol.

 

He said he was driven to Khost and shown the target but decided not to go through with the attack at the last minute, turning himself in to Afghan security forces instead.

 


 

Inspiring Pictures of U.S. Combat Dogs in Action

 

They rarely get glory. Their funerals aren't broadcast on TV. And they'll never ask for praise. But there are 2,700 of these "soldiers" serving in the U.S. military. Who are they? They're furry, have long noses, and walk on four legs. They are the military's canines.

 

In fact, the New York Times reports that one such dog was involved in the raid on Osama bin Laden, sparking a wave of interest in what is becoming an essential tool in the war on terror.

 

"In 2007, the Marines began a pilot program in Afghanistan with nine bomb-sniffing dogs, a number that has grown to 350 and is expected to reach nearly 650 by the end of the year," the Times says. "Over all, there are some 2,700 dogs on active duty in the American military. A decade ago, before the Sept. 11 attacks, there were 1,800."

 

The dogs are used for everything from tracking, to search-and-rescue, to bomb-sniffing. While the breeds have traditionally been Shepherds, increasingly the military is turning to Labradors:

Within the military, the breeds of choice are generally the German shepherd and a Belgian shepherd, or Malinois, but Marines in Afghanistan rely on pure-bred Labrador retrievers because of the dogs' good noses and nonaggressive, eager-to-please temperaments. Labs now accompany many Marine foot patrols in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan, wandering off-leash 100 yards or more in front as bomb detectors. It is the vital work of an expensively trained canine (the cost to the American military can be as high as $40,000 per dog), but at the end of a sweltering day, sometimes a Lab is still a Lab.

Competition crowns Special Forces Command top Soldier and NCO

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, May 16, 2011)  - The U.S. Army Special Forces Command NCO and Soldier of the Year Competition saw Soldiers from the five active duty Special Forces Groups compete against one another for five grueling days at Fort Bragg May 9 - 12 to see who would be crowned the regiment's top noncommissioned officer and Soldier.

 

Taking titles as the command's top Soldier and NCO respectively were Spc. Christopher Thompson, of 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky., and Staff Sgt. Samuel Winslow, 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colo.

 

"This is a great day and I am very honored to be a part of this," said Command Sgt. Maj. William B. Zaiser, USASFC Command Sgt. Maj.  "All these Soldiers over here and all these NCOs are all winners, because they have already won their group level Soldier of the Year or NCO of the Year competition."

 

The Soldiers battled their way through a variety of tasks throughout the week.  From warrior tasks and drills to a stress shoot, to night land navigation and an oral board. 

 

The top Soldier in the competition said this has been the best thing he has done in the Army and when asked how he felt about the honor he was still surprised.

 

"It's amazing; it is simply unexplainable right now," said North Carolina native Christopher Thompson, a signal intelligence analyst for Group Support Company, Group Support Battalion, 5th SFG.  "All the competitors were the best of the best and I was honored to be among them, it's just awesome."


This year's top NCO said it was his fellow Soldiers who helped him get through the entire event along with a lot of individual training that got him to the winner's spot. 

 

"I am pretty pleased with myself, I will not lie, but I trained hard for this and got great support from my company and my battalion and group," said Samuel Winslow, an Arkansas native who now hails from Colorado Springs, Colo., and is assigned to the 10th SFG. "This success for me here is really a reflection of all the hard work and support that I have received from my group and people back home." 

Staff Sgt. Melisha Kidd, with Group Support Company, Group Support Battalion, 3rd SFG, said of the competition: "One word: challenging,"

A native of Compton, Calif., Kidd said she learned from her fellow NCOs during the competition, but that wasn't always easy to do.

"It's difficult to learn from these guys because it is a competition," she said.  "But overall it was a good learning experience." 

 

Soldiers in the competition competed for months at the battalion and group level leading up to the event.


Thompson and Winslow will go on to compete later in the year at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command competition in June.  Winners of that competition will go on to compete at the Army level.

 

Should either the Top Soldier or NCO be unable to continue to represent the Special Forces command, an alternate will take his place. This year's top Soldier and NCO alternates were Specialist Brian Marquis, 7th SFG, Fort Bragg, and Sgt. First Class Caleb Farrell, 5th SFG, Fort Campbell, Ky., respectively.

Log Barn makes U.S. Special Forces mission possible


BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (Courtesy of CJFSOTF-A MOC, April 20, 2011) - United States Special Forces Operational Detachments Alpha operate in some of the most remote locations of Afghanistan. The narrow valleys and mountaintops make constant access to these locations extremely difficult.

Despite the rough terrain SF ODAs require constant resupply of the basics such as ammo, food, water and clothing. The Logistics Barn, referred to as the Log Barn for short, out of Camp Montrond, Bagram Airfield, keep the supplies rolling in so that operations can continue.

"Without the Log Barn the ODAs mission will ultimately fail," said Staff Sgt. Nathan Edwards, the service detachment non-commissioned officer in charge for Headquarters Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. "Everything they need or want comes through the Log Barn."

Over the past year the Log Barn has moved approximately nine million pounds of supplies and equipment to the ODAs operating in forward locations throughout Special Operations Task Force - East. Approximately half million to a million pounds are shipped each month.

First, the request for supplies or equipment is sent up to the supply sergeant on Camp Montrond by the USSF Soldiers on the ground in dozens of locations within the eastern and northern provinces. The supply sergeant then requisitions the items from the proper channels, either locally or from back in the states. Lastly, the supplies are then packaged and shipped out to their ultimate destination by the Log Barn.

Supplies are moved by either ground or air out of Bagram Airfield depending on what is being moved and how difficult it is to reach the destination.

"The preferred method is always by ground," said Edwards.

The typical convoy employs local truckers to move the items to their destination in what the Soldiers stationed in Afghanistan affectionately refer to as "jingle trucks," due to the grandiose and colorful decorations that adorn them.

However, some items require an armed escort to make sure they arrive at their destination safely; in these occasions the Log Barn employs the Tactical Fleet Logistical Escort of which Edwards is a member.

"When the ODA can't come and pick the item up, the TACFLE will bring it to them," said Edwards.

Through the Log Barn, USSF have a reliable and capable means of getting their need for basic supplies fulfilled, however not every request is as mundane as beans and bullets. A special request for items like a barbecue grill and steaks keeps morale high and improves the quality of life at the sites where amenities are minimal, if not non-existent.

"No request is unusual or impossible to us," said Edwards. "With the high level of training and responsibility that the ODAs have, whatever they want [if validated] , they deserve it and they will get it."

1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) Soldiers win division in Bataan Memorial Death March

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, April 27, 2011) - Five Soldiers assigned to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg traveled to White Sands Missile Range, N.M. last month to trek 26.2 miles carrying 40-pound rucksacks through blazing heat and desert terrain reaching elevations of 5,300 feet with 40-mph winds blowing in their faces.

 

They were not alone. They were among more than 6,500 civilians and American servicemembers participating in the 22nd annual Bataan Memorial Death March commemoration.

 

"It was by far the worst march any of us have ever been on," said Maj. Abraham Foster.  Team members beside him nodded in agreement.

At the end of the march, eight survivors of the original Bataan Death March were there to shake hands and speak with the participants.

 

"It was a very humbling experience," said Sgt. 1st Class Ben Harcrow.  

 

"Their (the Bataan Death March survivors) situation was so much worse, without any of the conveniences we had to protect us from the elements."

 

The Bataan Memorial Death March honors a special group of World War II heroes. These servicemembers were responsible for the defense of the islands of Luzon, Corregidor and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines. For six days, American and Filipino Soldiers walked more than 60 miles in tropical conditions -- 21,000 didn't live to see the end of the journey.

 

"At the end of it, I was limping a little and one of the survivors saw me and asked, 'What are you limping for?'" said Sgt. Adam Kourelis. "I just looked at him, but I had nothing to say."

 

The 1st SWTG team finished first among 38 teams in the heavy co-ed military division.

 

"The march required determination, intestinal fortitude and motivation from each other to keep us going, especially in the last few miles when we were out of gas," said Sgt. Maj. Abraham Sanchez, talking about the commemorative march.

 

The 1st SWTG(A), part of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, is responsible conducting initial and advanced training for U.S. Army Special Forces, Civil Affairs and Military Information Support Operations Soldiers.

Who Was Watching Porn at the OBL Compound?


David Harsanyi first pointed this out over on the blog. But it can't be ignored on the front page. It just can't.

Many have been calling for the photos taken of bin Laden at his compound to be released to the public. Now, there is another cache of images to surface from the raid. These are apparently graphic, too, and include videos. But they are quite different from the OBL death photos. According to Reuters, U.S. military men uncovered a large cache of porn:

The pornography recovered in bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.

For a man who hated the evils of America and the West, the cache is more than ironic. But according to some, it's more common than you might think:

Three other U.S. officials familiar with evidence gathered during investigations of other Islamic militants said the discovery of pornography is not uncommon in such cases.

In the days following the raid, when it was reported that the Navy SEALs uncovered a trove hard drives, a popular prediction on Twitter and the blogosphere was porn. Looks like that may have come true.

Controversy over child's flag drawing

Teacher allegedly refused to hang up picture

ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an 11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag. 

 

The family of Frankie Girard is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.

 

The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girard's father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.

 

"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no.  He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there," Girard said.

 

So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.

 

According to his father, the teacher told Frankie that his drawing of the American Flag would offend one of his classmates. "We're allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but we're denying Franklin those same rights," Girard said.

 

22News tried to contact the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn't hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture. In a statement he said: "Each of our schools flies the American Flag every day. At the Butterfield School, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by students and staff. And the other schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once per week."

 

The controversy is stirring heated debate within the Town of Orange. "I served 15 years in the military so that we could hang the flag wherever we wanted to, so I'm very offended," Faith Sullivan of Orange said.

 

A Facebook group called "I support Frankie Girard and the U.S. Flag" already has about 700 likes in two days.

 

The superintendent told 22News that Frankie's father is "going to extremes" and that the school has always respected the American Flag.

 

Frankie's father told 22News that he is so outraged that he placed a call to the American Civil Liberties Union.

 


 

White House Insider: Obama Hesitated - Panetta Issued Order to Kill Osama Bin Laden

     "What Valerie Jarrett, and the president, did not know is that Leon Panetta had already initiated a program that reported to him -and only him, involving a covert on the ground attack against the compound."

     Q: You stated that President Obama was "overruled" by military/intelligence officials regarding the decision to send in military specialists into the Osama Bin Laden compound.  Was that accurate?

     A: I was told - in these exact terms, "we overruled him." (Obama)  I have since followed up and received further details on exactly what that meant, as well as the specifics of how Leon Panetta worked around the president's "persistent hesitation to act."  There appears NOT to have been an outright overruling of any specific position by President Obama, simply because there was no specific position from the president to do so.  President Obama was, in this case, as in all others, working as an absentee president.

     (Notice that Panetta is NOT in the room)

     This update comes some 24 hours after our longtime Washington D.C. Insider first outlined shocking details of an Obama administration having been "overruled" by senior military and intelligence officials leading up to the successful attack against terrorist Osama Bin Laden.  What follows is further clarification of Insider's insights surrounding that event.

     I was correct in stating there had been a push to invade the compound for several weeks if not months, primarily led by Leon Panetta, Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates, David Petraeus, and Jim Clapper.  The primary opposition to this plan originated from Valerie Jarrett, and it was her opposition that was enough to create uncertainty within President Obama.  Obama would meet with various components of the pro-invasion faction, almost always with Jarrett present, and then often fail to indicate his position.  This situation continued for some time, though the division between Jarrett/Obama and the rest intensified more recently, most notably from Hillary Clinton.  She was livid over the president's failure to act, and her office began a campaign of anonymous leaks to the media indicating such.  As for Jarrett, her concern rested on two primary fronts.  One, that the military action could fail and harm the president's already weakened standing with both the American public and the world.  Second, that the attack would be viewed as an act of aggression against Muslims, and further destabilize conditions in the Middle East .

     Q: What changed the president's position and enabled the attack against Osama Bin Laden to proceed?

     A:  Nothing changed with the president's opinion - he continued to avoid having one.  Every time military and intelligence officials appeared to make progress in forming a position, Jarrett would intervene and the stalling would begin again.  Hillary started the ball really rolling as far as pressuring Obama began, but it was Panetta and Petraeus who ultimately pushed Obama to finally act - sort of.  Panetta was receiving significant reports from both his direct CIA sources, as well as Petraeus-originating Intel.  Petraeus was threatening to act on his own via a bombing attack.  Panetta reported back to the president that a bombing of the compound would result in successful killing of Osama Bin Laden, and little risk to American lives.  Initially, as he had done before, the president indicated a willingness to act.  But once again, Jarrett intervened, convincing the president that innocent Pakistani lives could be lost in such a bombing attack, and Obama would be left attempting to explain Panetta's failed policy.  Again Obama hesitated - this time openly delaying further meetings to discuss the issue with Panetta.  A brief meeting was held at this time with other officials, including Secretary Gates and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but Gates, like Panetta, was unable to push the president to act.  It was at this time that Gates indicated to certain Pentagon officials that he may resign earlier than originally indicated - he was that frustrated.  Both Panetta and Clinton convinced him to stay on and see the operation through.

     What happened from there is what was described by me as a "masterful manipulation" by Leon Panetta.  Panetta indicated to Obama that leaks regarding knowledge of Osama Bin Laden's location were certain to get out sooner rather than later, and action must be taken by the administration or the public backlash to the president's inaction would be "...significant to the point of political debilitation."  It was at that time that Obama stated an on-ground campaign would be far more acceptable to him than a bombing raid.  This was intended as a stalling tactic, and it had originated from Jarrett. Such a campaign would take both time, and present a far greater risk of failure.  The president had been instructed by Jarrett to inform Mr., Panetta that he would have sole discretion to act against the Osama Bin Laden compound. Jarrett believed this would further delay Panetta from acting, as the responsibility for failure would then fall almost entirely on him. What Valerie Jarrett, and the president, did not know is that Leon Panetta had already initiated a program that reported to him -and only him, involving a covert on the ground attack against the compound. Basically, the whole damn operation was already ready to go - including the specific team support Intel necessary to engage the enemy within hours of being given notice.  Panetta then made plans to proceed with an on-ground assault. This information reached either Hillary Clinton or Robert Gates first (likely via military contacts directly associated with the impending mission) who then informed the other.  Those two then met with Panetta, who informed each of them he had been given the authority by the president to proceed with a mission if the opportunity presented itself.  Both Gates and Clinton warned Panetta of the implications of that authority - namely he was possibly being made into a scapegoat.  Panetta admitted that possibility, but felt the opportunity to get Bin Laden outweighed that risk.  During that meeting, Hillary Clinton was first to pledge her full support for Panetta, indicating she would defend him if necessary.  Similar support was then followed by Gates.  The following day, and with Panetta's permission, Clinton met in private with Bill Daley and urged him to get the president's full and open approval of the Panetta plan.  Daley agreed such approval would be of great benefit to the action, and instructed Clinton to delay proceeding until he had secured that approval.  Daley contacted Clinton within hours of their meeting indicating Jarrett refused to allow the president to give that approval.  Daley then informed Clinton that he too would fully support Panetta in his actions, even if it meant disclosing the president's indecision to the American public should that action fail to produce a successful conclusion.  Clinton took that message back to Panetta and the CIA director initiated the 48 hour engagement order.  At this point, the President of the United States was not informed of the engagement order - it did not originate from him, and for several hours after the order had been given and the special ops forces were preparing for action into Pakistan from their position in Afghanistan , Daley successfully kept Obama and Jarrett insulated from that order.

     This insulation ended at some point with an abort order that I believe originated from Valerie Jarrett's office, and was then followed up by President Obama. This abort order was later explained as a delay due to weather conditions, but the actual conditions at that time would have been acceptable for the mission.  A storm system had been in the area earlier, but was no longer an issue.  Check the data yourself to confirm.  Jarrett, having been caught off guard, was now scrambling to determine who had initiated the plan.  She was furious, repeating the acronym "CoC" and saying it was not being followed.  This is where Bill Daley intervened.  The particulars of that intervention are not clear to me beyond knowing he did meet with Jarrett in his office and following that meeting, Valerie Jarrett was not seen in the West Wing for some time, and apparently no longer offered up any resistance to the Osama Bin Laden mission.  What did follow from there was one or more brief meetings between Bill Daley, Hillary Clinton, a representative from Robert Gates' office, a representative from Leon Panetta's office, and a representative from Jim Clapper's office.  I have to assume that these meetings were in essence, detailing the move to proceed with the operation against the Osama Bin Laden compound.  I have been told by more than one source that Leon Panetta was directing the operation with both his own CIA operatives, as well as direct contacts with military - both entities were reporting to Panetta only at this point, and not the President of the United States .  There was not going to be another delay as had happened 24 hour earlier.  The operation at this point, was in effect, unknown to President Barack Obama or Valerie Jarrett and it remained that way until AFTER it was already underway.  President Obama was literally pulled from a golf outing and escorted back to the White House to be informed of the mission.  Upon his arrival there was a briefing held which included Bill Daley, John Brennan, and a high ranking member of the military.  When Obama emerged from the briefing, he was described as looking "very confused and uncertain."  The president was then placed in the "situation room" where several of the players in this event had already been watching the operation unfold.  Another interesting tidbit regarding this is that the Vice President was already "up to speed" on the operation.  A source indicated they believe Hillary Clinton had personally made certain the Vice President was made aware of that day's events before the president was.  The now famous photo released shows the particulars of that of that room and its occupants. What that photo does not communicate directly is that the military personnel present in that room during the operation unfolding, deferred to either Hillary Clinton or Robert Gates.  The president's role was minimal, including their acknowledging of his presence in the room.

     At the conclusion of the mission, after it had been repeatedly confirmed a success, President Obama was once again briefed behind closed doors.  The only ones who went in that room besides the president were Bill Daley. John Brennan, and a third individual whose identity remains unknown to me.  When leaving this briefing, the president came out of it "...much more confident.      In my initial communication to you of these events I described what unfolded as a temporary Coup initiated by high ranking intelligence and military officials. I stand by that term.  These figures worked around the uncertainty of President Obama and the repeated resistance of Valerie Jarrett.  If they had not been willing to do so, I am certain Osama Bin Laden would still be alive today. There will be no punishment to those who acted outside the authority of the president's office.  The president cannot afford to admit such a fact.  What will be most interesting from here is to now see what becomes of Valerie Jarrett.  One source indicated she is threatening resignation.  I find that unlikely given my strong belief she needs the protection afforded her by the Oval Office and its immense powers to delay and eventually terminate investigations back in Chicago , but we shall see.

Federal Lawsuit Takes Aim At Vague Definition Of 'Assault Weapons'

A pair of gun rights groups have filed a lawsuit in California alleging that the State's definition of "assault weapons" is unConstitutionally vague.

 

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and Calguns Foundation have been joined by Brendan John Richards in their effort to change the wording of the law. Richards, an Iraq combat veteran, spent six days in jail in May 2010 after police found two pistols and a rifle in the trunk of his car.

 

Richards was arrested and charged for unlawful possession of an assault weapon. Last September, the Sonoma County District Attorney's office dropped the charges following a report from the State's Department of Justice, which indicated that none of Richards' firearms were considered "assault weapons."

 

"Mr. Richards was jailed for almost a week, when he had broken no law because a police officer had a conflicting view and the District Attorney's office believed him," said SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb.

 

Gene Hoffman, executive director of the Calguns Foundation, said that the broad definition of the law is designed to prohibit "guns that look scary."

 

Attorney Don Kilmer of San Jose claims that gun owners in the United States are vulnerable to a system in which police "arrest them first and let the courts sort it out." He believes this is a direct broach of citizens' Constitutional rights.

  



Prepare For Vehicular Emergencies

I recently returned from a trip to a mountainous part of the Pacific Northwest where I spent a good part of my time driving off the beaten path on forest service and other remote roads. A recent news story about a woman who was found alive in her van after being stranded for seven weeks on a remote road in a Nevada wilderness brought to mind the countless survivor stories I uncovered while researching my book Getting Out Alive. Though the scenarios I explored included a broad spectrum of environments such as deserts, open sea, jungle and mountains, the recurring theme in so many of these stories was that of an individual, couple or family venturing out in some kind of motorized vehicle or boat to a remote place they would not normally be willing or able to walk into (or back out of). Trusting fully in technology to get them there and back, they strike out with little in the way of extra gear or supplies, fully expecting to return to the comfort of civilization after their brief foray into the wild.

 

The trouble begins when the vehicle either breaks down or gets stuck or somehow disabled. Imagine being 20 miles from the nearest paved road in the desert with only a couple bottles of water, or stranded on a snowy mountain pass with no means of starting a fire and no sleeping bag or adequate warm clothing for the extreme-low temperatures of the nighttime hours. Such scenarios unfold time and time again, no matter how many stories are published or make the evening news - all because people put too much trust in technology and fail to take the "what-ifs" into consideration.

 

To be fully prepared to go into a remote place, you have to imagine what you would do without the vehicle that takes you there and what you would need if circumstances extended your stay much longer than expected. A lifetime of hiking with a backpack, riding into remote places on motorcycles and mountain bikes and traveling by sea kayak, canoe and sailboat has reinforced this idea in my consciousness time and time again. As a result, I always have extra food and water, even for the shortest excursions. And a sleeping bag, Therm-a-Rest pad, tarp, machete, fire-starting tools and other essentials are as much a part of my vehicle's equipment as a spare tire and jack. There have been times when having these extras has saved me from great discomfort. If you travel off the beaten path enough, there will come a time when you will need them, too.


Airsoft Training Inexpensive And Fun

As ammunition prices have bounced all over the place and the threat/promise of increased firearms and ammunition legislation has increased, I have started doing more and more of my training with airsoft police tactical pistols or trainers. They have allowed me to train with my wife more often than we could if live fire were our only option. As an added benefit, I know that if it becomes illegal or a serious liability to train with firearms in the future, I have a backup plan in place to stay proficient as well as get new shooters up to speed with firearms.

These are a class of airsoft guns that are made of metal. They are the same size and weight as their real counterparts and have the same controls, including safeties, slide locks and magazine releases. They even break down the same way. In other words, these are not the clear-plastic toys you buy at Target.

The bottom one is a Glock subcompact frame and the top is an airsoft compact frame.

 

If you have ever picked up a $20-$50 battery-powered airsoft pistol from a gun show, you have probably been disappointed that it didn't fit in your real holsters, that the magazines were toy-like, and that it wouldn't shoot accurately past about 12 inches.

 

Airsoft trainers are a completely different animal. They fit in leather and Kydex formfitted holsters, the magazines fit in your real magazine holders, and they shoot quarter-sized or smaller groups at 20 feet.

 

Beyond the look, here are some of the big pluses and drawbacks of using airsoft trainers:

 

Pluses (Just The Basics)

 

Dry fire on steroids: It's important to note that airsoft training is not a replacement for real shooting. You need to feel the recoil, hear the boom, know the feel of taking up slack on your trigger and the feel of trigger reset on your real firearms. A healthier and more accurate way to look at airsoft training is as dry-fire training on steroids that happens to be a lot of fun.

 

Cost: High-quality BB's cost less than $20 for 4,000 rounds. You have to add the cost of gas since airsoft trainer magazines have gas cylinders in them, but it still costs less than a penny per round. Trainer Glocks, 1911s, etc., cost about $150 apiece and extra mags are $30 to $40 apiece.

 

Frequency of training: I am able to shoot 100 to 200 rounds of airsoft every day because the time/cost barrier of training is so low. I still shoot quite a bit of real lead, but I don't have the time to shoot every day with my real firearms. Normally, when I go shooting, I shoot more rounds at one time to justify the travel time and range fees, but the frequency that I am able to train with airsoft allows me to build up and retain muscle memory much faster than shooting lead alone.

 

Variety of training: I practice my grip, presentation, sight acquisition, transitioning between targets, reloads, movement, odd angles, one-handed, off-hand, cornering, drawing-form concealment while seated and more... some of which just aren't possible at most ranges.

 

Simplicity of training: I don't have to drive to a range, pay for time, drive home or clean my guns... I just get up from my desk and take push-up/shooting breaks throughout the day. That's not possible for most people, but you can shoot down a hallway in your house or in your garage.

Fun: I could do most of what I do with airsoft with snap caps and dry-fire drills... but I never did dry-fire training as much as I do airsoft training because airsoft training is fun. It's fun to hit targets, make holes and knock things over, even if it is on a smaller scale than with a real gun.

 

Size and weight: Since the airsoft trainers are the same size and weight of their real counterparts, you can use the same holsters you normally use.

 

Social proof: The Japanese steel target team trains on airsoft all year, comes to the U.S. and shoots lead for just two weeks before meets, and the team places well each year. Several U.S. military units and police departments are training with airsoft as well.

 

Recoil/Flinch: Shooting airsoft will expose and cure you of anticipating trigger break and recoil. While big dips of the barrel may be hidden with real recoil, it shows up immediately with airsoft. There's no need for it with airsoft, and you can train your mind to not flinch with a few hundred rounds of airsoft.

 

Training wives/kids/newbies to shooting: Since it's fun and there is no boom, smell or recoil, airsoft is a great way to introduce people to shooting or to start teaching advanced techniques to current shooters. Without the recoil and the boom, you can focus on fundamentals until they are learned and then transition to low-caliber and defensive-caliber firearms.

 

Drawbacks

 

It's a toy: Face it... airsoft is a way to compensate for not having enough time or money to shoot the real thing as much as you would like. It will never be as good as a real firearm. I resisted airsoft, tried it, and now have embraced it as a way to get a lot more trigger time. That being said, it's better to get a lot of trigger time with an airsoft trainer than no trigger time with the gun you cannot afford or find the time to shoot.

 

Lack of recoil: The airsoft trainers do have recoil, but it's nothing like a real firearm. This means that you cannot really practice multiple shots because it's much easier to reacquire your site picture after each shot. What you can do is transition between targets, shooting each one once, or use airsoft training to develop your speed and focusing on follow-through (reacquiring your site picture) after each shot.

 

Dropping magazines: Airsoft trainer magazines have gas cylinders in them, which makes them heavy and causes them to break when you drop them on hard surfaces. You basically need padded carpet wherever you intend on dropping magazines during reloads. To clarify, picture a real magazine... it's heavy when it's full and light when it's empty because most of the weight comes from the bullets. With airsoft, the little plastic BB's weigh .2 grams, so the weight changes very little as it goes from full to empty. What I do is train with a drop pouch.

 

Authentic trigger feel: While the double-action triggers and single-action triggers work as they should, they just don't feel like real triggers. The tension builds up different, the break isn't as precise as with a real firearm, and the reset isn't quite as pronounced. That being said, the double-actions I have are good enough to practice drawing up the slack during the extension phase of my presentation, and all the airsoft trainers I have shot can be used to do trigger-reset drills.

 

Precision: With airsoft trainer handguns, you won't have much precision. My We Tech 1911 will shoot 1-inch to 3-inch groups at 25 feet out of the box. My KJ Glock is slightly less accurate. Both can be modified to shoot more accurately, but that hasn't been a concern for me. Airsoft trainer rifles are another matter entirely. My Top Tech M4 will hold 8-inch groups out to 80 to 100 yards when there is no wind.

 

Safety: There is a distinct possibility that you will learn bad safety habits with airsoft. Don't. You must treat airsoft guns like the real firearms they represent. Never point an airsoft trainer at an object you don't want to destroy (unless you are doing force-on-force training, which is beyond the scope of this article). Always use proper muzzle/safety discipline so that when you are handling real firearms you won't have any bad habits creep in.

 

Another issue that you will run into with high-quality airsoft trainers is what to use for targets. Cheap airsoft targets won't take the abuse, and BB traps are loud and overbuilt for airsoft.

I have solved this problem by making my own target frame/backstop for under $30 and using full-size targets that are 2 feet by 4 feet. Granted, this isn't original or rocket science, but it is a great solution for airsoft training.

 

This is the entire frame/backstop with a target attached.

 

Basically, I made the target frame out of two 10-feet sections of 1.5-inch PVC pipe. The four vertical sections are 3 feet long, the two horizontal crosspieces are 2 feet long, and the 4 legs are 1 foot long, for a total of 20 feet of pipe with absolutely no waste. I connected all the pieces with two elbows and 4 Ts and capped the legs with four caps. All of the PVC parts cost me about $20.

 

Here is just the frame. As you can see, it's very simple and fast to put together.

 

Home Depot will let you cut PVC in the store with its saws, so you don't even need to buy a saw. There's enough friction on the fittings to keep everything together, and it's easy to break everything down as much as you want for storage.

As a bonus, 2-feet and 3-feet sections of PVC make great improvised weapons.

 

For the backdrop, I started out with a $7 tarp folded and draped over the top. It was louder than I liked, so I threw a $7 moving blanket from U-Haul over it. It's absorbed thousands of focused hits so far without giving out; but when it starts to, all I need to do is slide the blanket up or down so my impact area is different.

 

When I triple-fold the moving blanket I have, it is just slightly narrower than my target. Two clothespins are all I need to secure targets in place.

I keep a box underneath the target/blanket and it catches 90 to 95 percent of the airsoft BB's, making cleanup a breeze.

 

Of course, you could also accomplish the same thing by draping a blanket over a door at the end of a hallway or over a doorway chin-up bar, but the PVC frame will allow you to practice entering a room and engaging a target, engaging the target behind partial cover, or hundreds of other scenarios that most people don't have the facilities to practice regularly.
