I am a Cpl. in the Army and just returned from Iraq. I carried my shotgun all year on my back in your shotgun scabbard, and it worked great! I was glad to have it around several times, and it proved to be an easy way to keep the shotgun handy for the squad. Thanks for your great product, and for your support of our troops!!

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I was in Weapons Company 3/5. The unit made us t-shirts with the 3/5 logo/emblem/crest, "Consumate Professionals". I was honorable discharged in 1999 and the t-shirt has been long-gone. I searched a couple of web site to find a shirt with the logo/emblem/crest but there was no luck. It didn't take me long to search this site before I found what I was looking for. When the shirt arrived it was better than what I expected. I love the t-shirt and wear it with pride and often. Thank you SpecialForces.com

Most Sincerely,
Bryan P.

Thank you!!!

Your Shirts are the best.

Andreas

Dear SFG,

Thank you for being so prompt with my order, and the refund as well.

I thought a little constructive thoughts were in order.

The "HRT" boot knife is well constructed. I had to "hone" the edge though, both sides,to get it up to spec.

As for the "GI USMC Combat Knife"......Well, it wasn't really a K-Bar, at least not one that I've ever seen. It read "US", and above that it read "Ontario". No worries though, after I used a ceramic sharpening stone on both the small back edge and the full length edge, I'm quite pleased with them both. Oh, I almost forgot, both were very pretty well balanced.

I'll be purchasing again from you in the near future.

Sincerely,
Ed Whiteside

Dear Special Forces

I received my order i have to say that is better than i expected! Thank you and you'll hear fom me soon.

Dave's Message
Boundaries of Tolerance
Liberalism in its pure sense is toleration of everything. This is the opposite of today's political liberalism which is intolerant. Today's Liberals and special interest groups are like tyrants: They demand tolerance at the same time offering none in return.

"Broad-minded is just another way of saying a
fellow's too lazy to form an opinion"
Will Rogers

Liberalism is the harbinger of revolt creeping and chipping away at individual freedoms like a well concealed predator waiting for its prey to fall into its trap. It weaves a web of destruction and spreads like cancer softening the ground in which the seeds of revolution are planted. Liberalism infiltrates every facet of life - family, marriage, economics, education, politics and Christianity, turning the people against the source of their stability, freedom and authority. Every norm and standard of the foundation of our country and culture is ridiculed and attacked. History is distorted and revised to support their false claims. Liberalism knows no bounds in its quest to destroy personal freedom using every trick in the book to lull, deceive and disarm people. Exposing and leaving them helpless to resist tyranny.

"I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers."
Kahlil Gibran 1883 - 1931

Tolerance is one of the liberal establishment's great tricks to destroy personal freedom and they are using it every way they can to take advantage. They ask for tolerance only as a way to get their way and accuse anyone who opposes them of being intolerant, hateful or stupid whatever they think will stick and then they play the victim card. Hardly a day goes by that I don't hear the word tolerance being used in the liberal media as a weapon of self destruction against those ignorant of the boundaries and motives of the ones preaching tolerance.

Tolerance is like anything else in this life it can be abused, distorted and used to deceive people. We have enemies now that are playing on people's weaknesses and ignorance in a way that cannot be seen by the naive till the enemy has achieved their goal. They are patient taking a little at a time and then asking for more and more growing more powerful and spreading like a cancer. The ignorant are surprised and rarely really get it and some of us that see what they are doing feel helpless to stop them watching the evil seeds grow and gain power.

"It is easy to be tolerant of the principles of
other people if you have none of your own."
Herbert Samuel

Tolerance was designed to give people their own privacy and freedom. It was never designed to tolerate behavior destructive to our personal freedoms and our country.

What I mean by this for example is a parent should never tolerate his child lying because he knows that this type of behavior is destructive, soon the kid will believe its own lies and can't tell the truth from a lie. But then there are other behaviors we tolerate to a point to allow our children to learn for example like maybe we give some money to our kid to buy something they want. We watch the kid run around the store and maybe spend the money unwisely but we tolerate it so the kid will learn from his mistakes how to spend money wisely.

In these two examples one type of behavior is not tolerated because it is destructive and in the other it was tolerated to give the child freedom to learn and prepares the child to take on responsibility for itself (personal freedom). I use to watch "Leave it to Beaver" when I was a kid and it was full of examples of what to tolerate and what not to. But the sixties came along and liberalism brought false progress and innovation replacing simple truth. This has destroyed the freedom we once knew in our country. Some of us have been taught simple truths or principals learning responsibility in the home and others unfortunately for society have not falling prey to liberalism.

A lot of the same principals of tolerance applied in raising children to be self reliant and responsible also apply to society at large. If we take the same principal and apply it to our elected officials, politicians, news media and so on it is a wonder we still survive as a nation. People have accepted the lies of politicians and special interest groups holding them to a lower standard then most of us would tolerate from our own children.

Toleration

People should have:
  • The right to express their opinions.
  • The right to walk on the street in safety.
  • The right to feel secure with their property.
  • The right to defend themselves.

Anything that encroaches on their personal freedom should not be tolerated.

"The promotion and preservation of freedom establish the boundaries and criteria for toleration."

Personal freedom, the four establishment principles along with our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights and Common Laws permitted under our Constitution create the framework for the criteria and boundaries of tolerance in our nation.

I will briefly define the major establishment principles designed for the preservation of nations and individual freedom that our nation's founders understood and observed. Each principle is built upon supporting and protecting the first principle "volition" which is self - determination the freedom to choose.
  1. Volition - self determination is our most important asset in life. The freedom of choice gives the human race the right to life, liberty, the ownership of property and the pursuit of happiness within the laws of establishment our country. Although none of us are equal in ability in freedom we are equal in personal choice.
  2. Marriage - serves as the framework for the protection of the union between man and woman. In marriage the man uses his authority to protect the freedom of his wife which enables her to be free to love her husband. Love can only come from freedom it cannot be coerced, forced or bought. Marriage forms the basis for stability in society. Abnormal degenerate behaviors like same sex marriages and communal living common in some religious cults undermine the family and are destructive to our nation they should not be tolerated in the eyes of the law and given special rights.
  3. Family - marriage creates stability and the ideal environment for raising children which is essential to the perpetuation of the human race and our nation. Parents being a man and woman give balance and perspective along with training to their children. Free will must be trained to make proper decisions and parents are designed for that purpose. Parents must instill proper norms and standards and teach their children to correctly evaluate things and situations in life along with what I like to call the big five all children should learn.
Parents Five Responsibilities to teach their Children:
    • Respect for authority
    • Self-discipline
    • Respect for property
    • Respect for privacy
    • Respect for others
  4. Nationalism - the world is divided into small and large national entities with different forms of government parliamentary, monarchy, republic, etc. But whatever forms their legitimate function is to provide privacy, freedom, and the right of the individual to pursue the course of life based upon his own decisions and ability within the framework of that particular type of government. Furthermore it must provide for freedom of religion. Our politicians have long forgotten their job is to protect our freedom and uphold the constitution. Instead they have elevated themselves above the law and put forth their own agendas for their own benefit.
Unfortunately every form of government always contains the elements by which it will eventually destroy itself. So a nation must be diligent to teach each new generation growing up to be responsible. A nation is always one generation away from failure. In the case of the United States our existence as a free country depends on a good understanding of our founding documents, The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights along with the establishment principles and personal responsibility.

Observances of these are not only essential to our survival but they also determine the need for power and for tolerance. When these are ignored things are spun out of control where the demand for power is determined by arrogance, lust and illegitimate need. When arrogance exceeds the constraints of legitimate authority there is no more respect for law. People and organizations will eventually arm themselves and resort to violence in an attempt to solve their problems. Society degenerates where government fails to protect freedom, property, and life. People resort to taking authority into their own hands to seek justice and security. We are not there yet, but we are on that road and picking up speed as our politicians keep passing legislation without the publics' knowledge of its true purpose. Recently we have all seen legislation being passed that the politicians themselves haven't read or do not even know what is in it. In the words of the majority House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, "we have to pass it to see what is in it. " Or in the words of president Obama, "we will find out what is in it after it's passed."

"The need for power and the boundaries for tolerance are determined by personal freedom, common sense, establishment principles and the founding documents of our country."
Tolerance can mean different things to different people but for the mature warrior it means a capacity to endure pain or hardship, physical endurance or stamina, mental fortitude, the ability to adapt to unfavorable environments and probably the most important of all is the ability to maintain integrity, honor, bearing and professional high standards in the face of bad influences.
We have heard people preach tolerance all our lives but has anyone ever explained that when tolerance is misapplied it becomes a self destructive weapon in the hands of our enemies. The wise man and the mature warrior knows that to compromise truth is the same as compromising his integrity which will lead to his own downfall.

In these times we are asked to compromise our integrity in the name of tolerance. We are badgered to accept behavior destructive to our personal freedom and our nation. If we are unable to discern what is to be tolerated and what is not we will surely fall victim to our enemies. In the 60's we were asked to tolerate many things that our country is now paying the price for, quote; "Tolerance can open the way to bad influence."
In the military the consequences of the misapplication of tolerance are severe. In training there are certain things the Sergeant will tolerate and things he will not. He must use good judgment to decide when to stop training and correct and when to let it go on even if mistakes are being made. If the soldiers are not concentrating on what they are doing he knows they will not benefit so he must take measures to refocus his troops. If there is a lack of discipline and control he knows they will not benefit from training but only become sloppy. Sometimes he allows troops to fail to learn and other times he stops training to prevent someone from getting hurt or allowing bad habits to develop. These judgments on what to tolerate and what not too come from criteria the Sergeant has learned from past experience seeing what happens to soldiers who enter combat that did not pay attention in training or soldiers that were not trained properly or with low standards. He knows there are consequences to tolerating the wrong things and there are consequences in not tolerating certain things that will prevent them from learning from there mistakes.
an opinion.

"To tolerant everything is too teach nothing"
F. J. Kinsman

Troop leaders in command of troops are responsible for there unit's performance and what makes or breaks a unit is determined by discipline and good training. If he does not understand the boundaries and consequences of what to tolerate and what he cannot the unit will pay a price when put to the test.
Just like the Sergeant we must develop our own boundaries and criteria for the application of tolerance in our lives. Although I wish I could give you a black and white formula I can only give you the principle of tolerance which is; Tolerance was designed to protect personal freedom and for criteria the fundamental foundation is built on what violates that principle which is:
  1. Personal freedom.
  2. Common sense combined with experience.
  3. Our founding documents, establishment principles.
  4. A warrior's integrity, honor and values based on freedom.
  5. Truth, the mature warrior knows truth should be met with truth. Suspicion should be met with suspicion.
Sometimes based on principal we have to tolerate things that are bad for example under the principal of authority we cannot ignore our commander when he is weak not based on his actions but based on his authority which as we all have probably experienced can be a bitter pill to take but freedom can only be preserved through respect for authority and when authority is abused proper courses of action must be pursued within that frame work.

In conclusion I hope when someone says tolerance you will be responsible and take into consideration the consequences of tolerance. Is it promoting personal freedom or is it destructive to freedom and there is where you draw the line.

Word of Truth
Tolerance
The Word Of Truth - Alive and Powerful
By Rev G.J. Rako
LTC (Ret)
IN USAR

I am growing increasingly intolerant of those that misrepresent the definition of toleration.  The far left, the media, and the ever increasing PC types would have us believe that to be tolerant means to condone, or approve of the destructive thoughts, motivations and actions of others.  They spuriously call Christians intolerant for believing that "faith alone in Christ alone" is the only means of reconciliation with the living God.  Soon this lack of toleration on our part will be identified as a hate crime.  Persecution of Christians is just around the corner.  They do not tolerate Christians or the absolute standards of the Bible.

Webster defines the word tolerate: "Main Entry: tolerate Function: transitive verb Inflected Form(s): tolerated; tolerating

Etymology:

Latin toleratus, past participle of tolerare to endure, put up with; akin to Old English tholian to bear, Latin tollere to lift up, latus carried (suppletive past participle of ferre), Greek tlenai to bear

1: to endure or resist the action of (as a drug or food) without serious side effects or discomfort: exhibit physiological tolerance for, 2 a: to allow to be or to be done without prohibition, hindrance, or contradiction.  b:to put up with <learn to tolerate one another>, the act of putting up with something or somebody irritating or otherwise unpleasant."

Oxford dictionary: "tolerate verb 1 allow (something that one dislikes or disagrees with) to exist or occur without interference.  2 patiently endure (something unpleasant).  3 be capable of continued exposure to (a drug, toxin, etc.) without adverse reaction.   - DERIVATIVES toleration noun.   - ORIGIN Latin tolerare 'endure'."

The PC crowd insists that we accept without question every degenerate, evil, vile human practice.  The true function of toleration is enduring their degeneracy, socialism, activism, and false standards.  Live and let live is the principle of toleration.  The Bible states that homosexuality is a sin and an abomination to God.  However, as a Christian I tolerate their freewill choice to be homosexuals, until they attempt to force their lifestyle on others or me.  Homosexuality, adultery, lying, cheating, stealing, and a host of other activities are sin.  Why do I not see adulterers, liars, or thieves having pride parades to legitimize their evil lifestyles?  They do not force their sinful behaviors on others calling them alternative lifestyles that we are suppose to accept.  Our schools are not teaching that murderers, liars, thieves and cheaters are born that way and that students should experiment with these practices to find out who they really are.  If you take a stand against this bizarre behavior of accepting the homosexual lifestyle you will be criticized, vilified, and maligned.

Socialism is constantly gaining ground in government and with the people of the United States; it is one more example of evil that Christians should barely tolerate.  No child left behind is an abysmal failure and waste of our tax dollars.  Anything that big government controls with an endless ever-growing bureaucracy ensures mediocrity at best and a complete failure at worst.  I would say that graduating high school seniors who cannot read constitutes a complete failure.  This is supposed to be the "land of the free home of the brave."  With the intrusion of government, we are no longer free and there are very few brave, because displaying the characteristics of bravery or any kind of aggressiveness are no longer politically correct.

What then is the Christian's responsibility when interacting with people that possess these evil philosophies?  First, never compromise divine norms and standards that you have learned from solid Bible teaching.  You stand your ground and keep your principles intact.  Second, people have a right to think or believe anything they wish without any interference from you or me.  The application of impersonal love to those you find unattractive, obnoxious, or repulsive either physically (my, you are shallow), or philosophically means you tolerate them.  You always treat people with dignity and respect, even if they are way out in left field.

Personal love is having an attraction to someone or something, the object of personal love.  I love (personal) ice cream, because I am attracted to the flavor, consistency, and sugar.  Impersonal love, on the other hand is the expression of your integrity toward someone who is unattractive, repulsive, or in some way irritating to you.  Impersonal love is another word for tolerate.  Someone is unattractive or completely antithetical to what you believe, but the standards of integrity in your soul from Bible doctrine allow you to tolerate them.  As you tolerate them, you from your own character treat them with respect and fairness, even if they do not deserve it.  John 3:16  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten [uniquely born] Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.  God does not love the world or the fallen, sinful creatures in it personally.  This verse is an expression of God's impersonal love.  God loves us personally only after we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

"The moment we believe in Christ, God bestows upon us forty things.  One of these forty things is the imputation of perfect righteousness."
2 Cor.5:21

God personally loves His own righteousness; therefore, He now loves us personally, because we now possess His perfect righteousness.  This divine righteousness given to us at the moment of salvation gives us for the first time something attractive to God.

Likewise when we deal with people in our own periphery that are acting in an irritating way or whose philosophies are directly opposed to our own, we can apply impersonal love, or toleration.  Toleration remember, is not agreement with their false standards.  We are called to love our neighbor as our self and to love our enemies.  We are not called to be attracted too, compromise with, or to be sweet to evil people.  I do not like everyone in which I come into contact.  However, I can love them impersonally from my own integrity.

The humanity of Jesus Christ the perfect God-Man voluntarily went to the cross and took our place.  He became our substitute.  On the cross, He bore our sins and not just ours but the sins of the whole world.  God the father judged every sin ever committed and the work of salvation was complete.  This great act of impersonal love secured our salvation and guaranteed eternal life to any who would believe in Christ.  (Acts 16:3) Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

I tolerate a great many people and policies.  I do not have to like them.  I have, over the years had relatives, friends, or co-workers who were liberal or recreational drug users, or simply had a different viewpoint than mine.  I tolerated (expressed impersonal love through my virtue) those things I disagreed with or found repulsive in some way.  I did not bend to their evil thoughts or lifestyle. (1 Cor. 15:33)  Be not deceived, evil companions' corrupt good morals.  (Prov. 13:20)  He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools brings harm.

Toleration is impersonal love for all mankind.  Toleration is not bending your standards to those who do not possess standards.  Toleration is not approval of degeneracy because the rest of the world seems to be going along with it.  Toleration is the application of your integrity to others as you display respect and dignity toward them.

Hostage Rescue Operations
in a Mobile Environment

"Bus Assaults"

Today's Swat teams are faced with many tactical challenges. The most frequent is the barricaded gunman and the suicidal subject. Occasionally, we face the hostage situation but seldom do we have to make a hostage crisis intervention. For many teams the hostage crisis remains the focal point of Swat training. The theory being that if you can master the hostage crisis intervention than your response to a barricaded gunman and suicidal subject will be just as good. We have also been lead to believe that the hostage crisis is the biggest tactical challenge a Swat team may face.

I agree that the hostage crisis is one of the toughest tactical challenges for a Swat team to face however; hostages being held captive on a bus may be the toughest challenge any tactical team can encounter. We in law enforcement have come to know this tactical option as the bus assault. In many ways it has to be treated like a hostage rescue operation because you are dealing with a hostage crisis. Unfortunately, your team will be facing many challenges that you wouldn't normally train for when conducting typical hostage rescue interventions in a conventional stronghold with rooms and doors.

The biggest problem is your adversary's stronghold can become mobile and unless you limit their movement your options are very limited. There are several tactics that can be used to keep a bus from moving. If feasible utilize two armored tactical vehicles to block the front and back of the bus by parking them against the bus to prevent any further movement. This is an aggressive tactic but it gives you several advantages. The first is the bus can no longer move forward or backwards. The second is you are now afforded a close vantage point for observation and it provides a location for staging and some cover on the approach.

If your limited to just one tactical vehicle then create a ruse by having the tactical vehicle drive in front of the bus and while doing so have a tactical team approach the rear of the bus and disengage the on/off switch for the engine. Most commercial busses have some type of switch in the rear off the buss in the engine compartment and I encourage you to stop in your local bus yard and ask the mechanics to show you the location of these switches. School busses typically have front engine compartments and your limited on ways to shut down their engines.

Other tactics include cutting the brake lines to exhaust the line pressure or puncturing the gas lines or tank to drain the fuel. Keep in mind that most busses are diesel fuel so the fire risk is minimal. These two tactics are probably the most dangerous because the team tasked with the operation most likely wont have any cover or concealment on the approach and the floor of the bus offers very little in terms of cover. Also, you are not guaranteed success by disrupting these lines so like I mentioned earlier, consider the use of two armored cars to barricade the bus.

Once you have the bus stopped and movement is no longer possible counter sniper teams must be deployed. Snipers should be equipped with barrier or frangible rounds that they have trained with and collected data on for their respective weapons. Don't task a sniper to a bus assault that hasn't shot through glass barriers or doesn't have the proper ammunition for the glass or headliner. I even recommend that your snipers shoot through bus headliners in training and record the data collected. Video tape the snipers shots from inside as they pass through the headliner and glass windows. This is important because if an intervention is to occur the sniper teams will take repetitive shots into the headliner as the entry team makes their approach to keep your adversary's head down or even on the floor.

The counter snipers primary objective is to gather intelligence. It's critical that he collects more information on his hostage taker(s) as well as the hostage(s) themselves. This intelligence will be crucial to the entry team if they make an intervention. The second objective for the counter sniper is threat recognition and elimination. The open-air option to neutralize the hostage takers is the preferred method over making an entry onto the bus. When possible assign two counter snipers to each hostage taker to assure a quick instantaneous non-reflex kill shot.

Now that the bus is stationary and the snipers are deployed it's time to establish negotiations. This can be achieved through the use of cell phones, public address systems and throw phones. Just like any other tactical operation keep the command post away from your target location and with a little luck the negotiators can defuse the stand off.

Bus assaults require a stealth approach to provide surprise, a decisive entry with quick dominance of the bus, and dedicated tactics. The tactic must deliver an overwhelming amount of dominating force. This may make the difference between a successful or catastrophic operation.

Once the decision is made to perform a bus assault, preparation is key to the success of the operation. Here are some tactical considerations during the planning phase:
  • The use of distractions or a ruse
  • Entry teams approach to the target
  • Security or containment of the scene
  • Breaching of the door and windows
  • Entry onto the bus
  • Custody of hostages and hostage takers
  • Tinted windows
  • Access to shut off the engine
  • Number of doors and emergency exits
  • The use of chemical agents
The following is just a brief example of one a couple variations of a commercial bus assault. I am sure your teams have many different styles and opinions on various tactics but this is my preferred tactic.
  1. The bus must be immobilized, preferably with armored vehicles barricading the bus but cutting off the power source, engine or brake lines may work.
  2. Counter snipers are deployed in a position to gather intelligence. Snipers must have the ability to take an open air shot if presented. Snipers must also have the ability to provide multiple shots for cover fire into the headliner of the bus if called upon. Again, these snipers must know their capabilities and limitations. If they don't have the training or equipment then they must not be used to provide cover fire.
  3. The sniper teams initiate the entry team movement by shooting into the headliner of the bus, in succession during the entire approach to the bus. They continue the shots keeping the hostages and hostage takers ducking for cover or better yet they hit the floor as the entry team approaches.
  4. The entry team (minimum of 10) makes the approach to the bus on the door side of the bus, in two columns of operators shoulder to shoulder. They carry ballistic blankets if available. As they approach the back two operators will toss multiple flash bangs, in succession onto the drivers side of the bus to draw attention to the opposite side of the approach if the sniper shots fail to get their attention.
  5. Once along side the bus the cover team (8 operators) break several windows and stacks along the side as the entry team stacks at the door. On the team leaders order the snipers will stop shooting into the bus and four cover operators will then take immediate positions in the windows with their guns in the windows providing cover. The operators will need step ladders or use the their buddies to get the elevation needed to properly control the ported windows.
  6. The team leader will give a second command for the entry team to make entry once the cover operators have taken their position. Although this is a separate command the time delay should only take a second or two between the cover officers taking positions and the entry team making entry.
  7. Entry team enters bus through the door or the front window. The windows of commercial busses come out relatively easy with the proper tool. One good swipe and pull and the windshield is out of it's frame.
  8. First man in goes to the driver and takes a position of on top of him covering "long" on that side of the bus.
  9. Second man takes cover on the steps or the first seat covering "long" on the opposite side of the driver.
  10. The next four to eight operators then clear the bus by moving down the isle clearing each seat as they go. Avoid scanning when clearing the seats. It's faster to have the first guy look one direction and the second guy look the opposite, never scanning back across the bus but scanning forward as they clear.
  11. Once domination of the bus is achieved the targets must be taken control of quickly. If you fail to recognize them on the clearing operation loud communication between the team leader and the occupants of the bus will be necessary. First yell loudly to the occupants to raise their hands towards the ceiling and keep them their. Secondly, ask the occupants where the bad guy is or is anybody injured.
  12. After taking the targets into custody and evacuation of the occupants is complete do a second sweep of the vehicle for explosive devices.
This is a brief account of one tactic and if you inject variables than the tactics change to meet your needs. Remember, that a bus assault is a last resort effort and everything prior has failed, so to win you must fight chaos with chaos, only controlled in a tactical manner.

The Cock and the Jewel
A cock, scratching for food for himself and his hens, found a precious stone and exclaimed: "If your owner had found thee, and not I, he would have taken thee up, and have set thee in thy first estate; but I have found thee for no purpose. I would rather have one barleycorn than all the jewels in the world.

Clichés of Socialism
Clichés of Socialism
"Man is Born for Cooperation not for Competition"
or,
"The idols of the Market place must yield
to those of humanity"

THE FLAW in this cliché is the implication of incompatibility between competition and cooperation, between the procedures of voluntary exchange and the objectives of human beings.

What socialists call "the idols of the market place" include competitive bargaining and free trade as well as the private ownership and control of property. These are the means by which each individual may pursue his own ability-within the limits of due respect for the lives the property, and the related unalienable right of his fellow men.

Though the free market affords the maximum opportunity for each and every unit of humanity to approach the fulfillment of his potentialities, this is not what the socialists have in mind. The socialistic concept of ideal humanity involves giving to each person according to his needs, regardless of his efforts to earn what he wants. According to this view, the whole of man consists of his capacity to consume, which sheds light on the contention that "man is born for cooperation, not for competition." In other words, man is born for comfort and ease, not work and struggle!

The "cooperation" of socialism refers to the sharing of whatever is available to consume, regardless of how it came to be produced or saved, or who might claim ownership. Man as consumer, is to help himself to anything he needs-but at the other fellow's expense.  The double trouble with this concept of "cooperation" is its inherent immorality and the fact that it doesn't work. The theory doesn't work out in practice because most human beings won't work-or save-if they're systematically robbed by loafers, or taught to be loafers themselves. And, whereas voluntary charity may be considered one of the highest forms of moral human action, it seem clear that reversing the process to let the receiver of alms grasp what he wants from whom he pleases if quite as immoral as any other form of theft.

Because consuming may follow but cannot precede production, it is important that economic policy give consideration to producers and encourage them. Private property-the right to the fruits of one's own skill and labor, earned by serving rather than exploiting others-affords such encouragement. The owner of property is free to trade with others, if they are willing. He may not force anyone to buy his goods or services, but must vie for the buyer's favor-cater to the consumer-in open competition with all other producers within his market area.

Stiff competition? Yes, indeed. But also cooperation of the highest order, for it involves absolute respect for the lives, property, the freedom-the gamut of human rights-of every peaceful person in the world. No one is empowered by the free market procedures to enslave any other person, or to compel him to buy or sell anything.

To cooperate effectively, individuals must be free to choose with whom to cooperate and for what purposes. And competition provides the opportunity for such choice. If there is but one maker of bread, there can be no choice. So, competition is the necessary prelude to cooperation.

What social arrangement could possibly be more humanitarian than to let each individual rise to the full limit of his creative potentialities? The competitive free market does this and thus maximizes the opportunities for the more capable among men to behave charitably toward their less fortunate brethren. It is not a question of cooperation or competition. Cooperation and competition in the market place afford the best hope for each individual and for humanity in general.

What Has Really Changed?
What Has Really Changed?
There's something here somewhere
    About laying an egg  .  .  .

ONCE UPON A TIME were two farmers. Each had a hen that laid about 20 eggs a month.

Both farmers liked eggs, so one ate his. But the other did without, and put his eggs in an incubator which he bought by borrowing money. In no time he had 200 chickens from his one. A shocking profit! (Before taxes.)

He sold some to pay interest on the loan on his incubator; he ate some as a reward for all his labor in raising the brood. And he sold a good many to pay his income tax.

He still had some left. Profit.

So the farmer who had eaten all his eggs got a law passed. The neighbors divided up the chicken-raising-farmers "profits" and ate them. After all, they said, he had more than he needed and they were hungry.

So, of course, the farmer wasn't going to raise any more chickens just to have them taken away from him; he ate his eggs too.

In due time both the farmers' original hens died of old age, and then there weren't any eggs for anybody. No chickens either.

The neighbors were quite sure it was somehow the chicken raiser's fault.

Did the farmer, who used to eat all his eggs, enjoy his now-eggless meals any more for realizing that the farmer next door wasn't enjoying any chicken?
