Another happy customer
Bob Miller

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I was in Weapons Company 3/5. The unit made us t-shirts with the 3/5 logo/emblem/crest, "Consumate Professionals". I was honorable discharged in 1999 and the t-shirt has been long-gone. I searched a couple of web site to find a shirt with the logo/emblem/crest but there was no luck. It didn't take me long to search this site before I found what I was looking for. When the shirt arrived it was better than what I expected. I love the t-shirt and wear it with pride and often. Thank you SpecialForces.com

Most Sincerely,
Bryan P.

Thank you!!!

Your Shirts are the best.

Dear SFG,

Thank you for being so prompt with my order, and the refund as well.

I thought a little constructive thoughts were in order.

The "HRT" boot knife is well constructed. I had to "hone" the edge though, both sides,to get it up to spec.

As for the "GI USMC Combat Knife"......Well, it wasn't really a K-Bar, at least not one that I've ever seen. It read "US", and above that it read "Ontario". No worries though, after I used a ceramic sharpening stone on both the small back edge and the full length edge, I'm quite pleased with them both. Oh, I almost forgot, both were very pretty well balanced.

I'll be purchasing again from you in the near future.

Ed Whiteside

Dear Special Forces

Dave's Message

Story of a 4th of July Celebration of Old

Only two people took the bold responsibility of signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. They were John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2nd, but the last signature wasn't added until 5 years later. Still, the message was the same.

Fast forward to 1853, Los Angeles, California... there existed a rough, progressive metropolis, and in it a strong common sense amongst its citizens, who from 1847 to the mid 1860s following the treaties of Cahuenga and Guadalupe lived in a time and place where "Californios" could enjoy the benefits of being Free Americans. Early California's citizens were know as "Californios" - a unique multi heritage stew, seasoned with adventurers, rancheros, soldiers, sailors, trappers, civic leaders, business barons and fortune seekers working together - and celebrating a very festive 4th of July, together.

It was not a celebration about burning flags or bras or slurring the office of the President. This message deals with that one particularly terrific 4th of July, which although not the first 4th celebrated, in the Los Angeles area of Southern California, then new U.S. territory which was gained in the aftermath of the post Mexican American War 1847 - 1858...( the first post war 4th of July in Southern California was celebrated by the Mormon Battalion of General Kearny's Army Of the West at Fort (Hill) Moore when they first raised Old Glory on July 4th, 1847 to celebrate their fallen co-patriot Captain Benjamin D. Moore at the end of the War..) ... It certainly was one of the most "Hail-Good Fellow-Well-Met" 4th of July's I have ever read about. One I believe you might like to know about too especially why it was so bold a action.

You see, back then in the post Mexican American War era of 1847 - 1860 the Los Angeles citizenry was a prime example of what the U.S. of A was all about as per our beliefs and ideas set forth in the constitution.

As mentioned above these Angelinos [as residents of L.A. refer to themselves today] were then known as "Californios." To set the record straight, 'Californios' is a historic and regional term for early 'California's residents who then, were in total, no more all Hispanic, as they are today). They were from many heritages including native indigenous California Tribal Indians, European, African, Asian, Mestizo a mixture of the indigenous people with those new residents...and Yankee migrants. These Californios were transplants, many Spanish speakers who come to California because of land grants and or on the coat tails of the oppressive California Mission system. They did not want Spain or Mexico or anyone else to be their governing authority. Here, they found a new home. Like the local indigenous tribes before them, they wanted the freedom to live free and accepted the difficulties and responsibilities to enjoy this freedom. (So the crap about the U.S.A. stealing California from Mexico via the Treaty of Guadalupe was in effect a liberation for those Califonios living here who had enough of the dictatorial and monarchy type authority over the region .)

It's hard to believe, I know. But... at one time Los Angeles was a place where the Don's and Gentry; Commodores and Generals; Sheriffs, Rangers and Outlaws; the Empowered and the Meek, could agree to disagree but live and celebrate in harmony. That all happened despite many of them having been at one time, bitter and violent combatants towards each other - as everyone believed in and strived to be a citizen of the U.S. of A. . Americans living in back then 18 47 to 1860 Los Angeles, could set aside political and warring differences of the times, and celebrate - together the sacred American Trinity which is what makes us uniquely American. As citizens of the United States of America we came from everywhere and would accommodate all who believed in the idealism of our nation.

This fellowship called the American Trinity which I will address toward the end of this message was reflected on by Major Horace Bell a California Ranger (a territorial Law enforcement officer of the time ) whose real life was the kind dreamed up by fiction authors appealing to the common appetite for heroic adventure... this will also be addressed, later.

In the following abstract taken from Bell's "Reminiscences of a Ranger" (Pages 124 to page 130) the Author recalls how in 1853 all Califonios some, one-time enemies, some still enemies, all believed in the United States and what it has always stood for between old enemies or good friends. They believed in the stars and stripes as part of their collective patriotic souls as they gathered together in 1853 for a very memorable first 4th of July Celebration held in San Pedro California as guests of Los Angeles business baron Phineas Banning.

Speaking of Fourth of July celebrations, reminds me of the most particularly convivial one that this very patriotic historian ever participated in, which occurred at San Pedro in that memorable year 1853. That ancient commercial entry point was larger then than at present, the founding of Wilmington not having as yet been projected by General Banning, its illustrious founder and patron. The glory of San Pedro, as that of imperial Rome, proud Venice and expectant San Diego, has departed, the author fears never to return; Carthage had her rival in Rome; San Pedro had a merciless rival in fair Wilmington, and now you behold a dilapidated sheep corral that seems to say in solemn silence, "Here stood San Pedro, the peerless."

San Pedro was at the time referred to a great place; it had no streets, for none were necessary. No prison admonished the evil-doer to give San Pedro a wide berth. No church invited the piously-inclined to seek religious consolation at the lively port. No! There was nothing of that sort, but the author solemnly asseverates that there was a liberty pole at San Pedro, from which proudly floated the Flag of Freedom. That there were two mud scows, a ship's anchor and a fishing boat, a multiplicity of old broken-down Mexican carts, a house, a large haystack and mule corral, and our old friend the gallant 'Laura Bevan ,' floating swan-like at her anchorage, on that beautiful Fourth of July.

Alexander and Banning administered the government at San Pedro at the time mentioned. Don George Alexander, he of the big heart, worthy brother of the generous Don David, a noble whole-souled, true-hearted American, bursting and boiling over with love of country and patriotism; and ardent Phineas, who was not then even a captain, and did not dream of ever adorning his well-developed shoulders with stars plucked from the American constellation, Phineas Banning has, since that memorable '53, risen to the rank of General—an honest and well-merited distinction, merited if for no other service save the princely; hospitality dispensed on our first national feast day above referred to, which he has continued to the present day. It is useless to say that Banning is still on hand on every patriotic occasion; but generous old ['Don'] George, after a quarter of a century of usefulness spent among us betook himself to some other field of enterprise, and is, I believe, yet living, and may God speed him—for a truer patriot or better Christian never dwelt in the blessed land of the angels.

For a week or more the patriotic proprietors of San Pedro gave out by word of mouth, and published in both English and Spanish, a general invitation to the whole county and the counties adjoining, and to the world, including San Bernardino, then exclusively Mormon, San Diego and Mexico, to come to San Pedro and assist in the patriotic demonstrations to be then and there held. On the morning of the 3rd, Alexander and Banning's stages left the Angels for San Pedro crowed with guests, and returned for another living freight; every imaginable conveyance to be found in the city, from Lanfranco's pioneer sulky to a Mexican cart, was pressed into service, and troops of gaily dressed and splendidly mounted caballeros, accompanied by light and airy equestriennes, were seen taking up their line of march to the place of promised festivities, while old Uncle Dave Anderson, boiling over with patriotic music, was seen going out of town prominently seated in a grand improvised music car, accompanied by the elite of our angelic musical world, while the whole country seemed to be on the move by noon of the 3rd of July. The happy and light-hearted rancheros, who, up to that time, knew not of trouble, hard times or oppressive taxation, turned out in force to assist their new-made kinsfolk, the liberty-loving Yankees, in celebrating the common birth of liberty, and by the time the shades of evening fell on the patriotic city, 2,000 guests, of all ages, sexes and nationalities, had paid their respects to their liberal entertainers, who until the evening of the 5th, dispensed a hospitality more than princely. It was superlatively royal. It was grand, full-handed and without stint.

That gallant old Yankee skipper, Captain Morton, put in an appearance several days prior to the Fourth with his beautiful little clipper the Laura Bevan, freighted with good things both edible and drinkable for the grand hospitable occasion. The unpatriotic reader will naturally inquire where we all ate and slept when there was but one house in the city. Answering for one patriot, the author will say that he did not sleep during the time spent in merry-making, and as for eating, it was one perpetual eat. The long dining table was kept going every hour, night and day; the musicians and dancers relieved each other; those not engaged in eating or dancing were engaged in toasting, or responding to toasts, speech-making or singing patriotic songs. A crowd of Americans roared "Hail Columbia," another crowd the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "Yankee Doodle," a knot of gay Frenchmen made night melodious with the soul inspiring "Marseillaise," while patriotic Mexican kept up the "Ponchada" and

"Marchamos Mexicanos, marchamos con valor y viva la libertad"

In this manner we passed the night of the 3rd. On the morning of the 4th a grand procession was formed with jovial old Judge Dryden on foot as Grand Marshal. Over a thousand patriots were in line. We did not march through the principal streets, but marched around and around the liberty pole, hurrahing and cheering all the time the gay flag of freedom that so proudly floated over us. The procession then formed a grand hollow square and each patriot was given a bottle of champagne with the cork started and a glass. When this disposition was made, Don George stepped out in front of the hollow square and requested the attention of the guests. Every man was silent attention. The said patriotic Don George and his words were duly interpreted into Spanish and French:

"Gentlemen, I will give a toast which when drank will be followed with three cheers. Gentlemen, here is to the President of the United States."

Every man drank, and three immense cheers followed. Every man drank, and cheered, except one, Tom - - - , he who pitted himself against old Dimmick in defense of the Rangers when arrested for cat-hauling the city marshal here to fore referred to. Tom stood grim and silent until the cheering had subsided, when he deliberately smashed his bottle on the ground, tossed his glass to one side and swore he wouldn't drink to any d- - d loco foco. Frank Pierce was President and Tom was a Whig. Not a word from the crowd of patriots; all was dignifiedly silent, and Don George, without so much as a ripple on his serene countenance, requested the grand marshal to dismiss the parade. Don George was greatly annoyed, as the sequel will show, although too well bred to notice the breach of patriotic good breeding at the time, but two years thereafter he played even on Tom, as I will yet inform the reader. After the dismissal of the grand parade as above stated, Captain Morton announced his vessel as ready to give such as felt so disposed a sea trip, while the writer accompanied Don Juan Sepulveda to Dead Man's Island, to fire a national salute. Don Juan in the exuberance of his patriotism, had unearthed a venerable field piece which had enjoyed the silence of the grave since it had fired its last shot in defense of Mexican Territory. Captain Sepulveda mustered and embarked his command on a large boat and proceeded up Wilmington Bay, where he embarked his artillery and sailed for Dead Man's Island, where after infinite labor, he succeeded in mounting his battery on the highest point of the island, and all being ready, we let loose such a thunder as was never exceeded by one gun. It seemed that we would wake the seven sleeping heroes who so quietly reposed on the little barren rock. Don Juan said the firing would serve a triple purpose, it would dissipate the last vestige of unfriendly feeling that may have lingered in the bosoms of the sons of the country towards the United States; that it would serve to express our gratitude to the great founders of modern liberty; and it would be an appropriate salute to the seven brave mariners who lost their lives in their country's service, and after the first salvo, and while paying our respects to our liquid ammunition, Don Juan proceeded to tell us how the seven sailors came to be killed. "Their wooden-headboards stood in line in front of us. Said Don Juan: "El Comodoro (meaning Commodore Mervine, U.S. Navy), made his advance on Los Angeles. He made his first halt at Dominguez' ranch, and camped for the night. IN the morning he took up his line of march, with the Californian horsemen in front, flank, and rear. The Californians, poorly armed, mostly with lances, had an extravagant idea of Yankee prowess, and kept at a safe distance until the Commodore had reached a point near Compton, when we commenced to harass him. We had this same gun mounted on a Mexican carreta, and at the first discharge, shiver and down went one of the wheels, and the gun being practically dismounted, our general Carrillo, ordered it to be abandoned, which was being done when one Higuera left the ranks of horsemen and swore that if the Yankees got the gun it would be over his dead body. With his own hand, unaided, he loaded it just in time to let drive at the head of the Yankee column and killed seven men, estos mismos (these same). The heroism of Higuera so inspired the Californians that they rushed in and bodily dragged the gun away with their[ lariats], and then so vigorously assailed the invaders that they were forced to fall back, carrying these poor fellows with them, and were glad to get safely on board their marine fortress. The old gun was subsequently buried near my house, and after a nap of six years her it is, and here am I, and others who dragged it away at the time; and here we are, all of us, the old gun, the old enemies, now friends; and here is brave Higuera, firing a salute of honor over our former foes, who fell in battle. What do you say, boys? Up, Higuera! Viva Los Estados Unidos! Viva Mexico Somos Amigos!"

The author feels great satisfaction in informing the reader that brave Higuera, a true hero, can be seen at any time on our streets, a quiet old man, that one; would not suspect of ever having had the courage, single-handed and alone, to face an army of gringos. Napoleon, for the act, would have conferred on him the Cross of the Legion of Honor.

The music and festivities kept up all day, all night, and most of th day of the 5th; but during that day, sleepy and worn out patriots wended their way to Los Angeles; and so ended this grand and patriotic affair.

About two years thereafter a convention met in Los Angeles to nominate county officers. Don George was a delegate, and Tom - - was a candidate for Sheriff.

Tom met Don George with all the winning smiles of a candidate, and said: "Don George, I am a candidate, as you are aware, and of course can count on your vote."

"No, sir, you cannot," said Don George, emphatically.

"Why, Don George, what can be the matter? I am astonished pray explain."

Well, Mr. Tom - - - , I hope I may forever lose my right as an American freeman when I give my vote to any man who would refuse to drink to the President of the United States on a Fourth of July. Good day, Mr. Tom - - - ; I am not your man."

So who were these U.S. Citizens of Califonio prominence? The Don George's, the Bannings, Sepulvedas, Alexanders and Mervines? In a nut shell they were those who built Los Angeles together and simultaneous of one another as a region that would develop into the megalopolis it would become over the next 150 years and is today... For Instance:

Major Horace Bell was born Dec. 11, 1830 in southern Indiana. He came to Califonia for the Gold Rush in 1853. Horace became a founding member of a new law enforcement unit, the Los Angeles Rangers, a company of mounted volunteer police funded by the state legislature. Bell had many adventures as a Ranger and became deeply immersed in the local culture, learning Spanish and mingling with the elite ranchero class of Los Angeles citizens through the help of his uncle. As a Los Angles Ranger he helped hunt Joaquin Murrieta - the Robin Hood of El Dorado -and inspiration for the fictional early California bandit 'ZORRO.' In 1856, looking for even more adventures, Bell joined William Walker's force for the invasion of Nicaragua. He achieved the rank of major, a title he held for the rest of his life. When the U.S. civil war broke out, he went back to Indiana, joined up and was initially a quartermaster sergeant with the Sixth Indiana Infantry in the Union Army. Bell ended up as a scout for General Lew Wallace just before the Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862. Bell eventually saw service as a major in the Union Army before returning to Los Angeles after the war to become a lawyer and newspaper publisher. He authored several books on early California like Ranger providing lively anecdotes of Los Angeles and its residents under Mexican and American rule, emphasizing cowboys and criminals as well as Native Americans. Throughout, Bell gives special attention to the fate of Hispanic Californians and Native Americans under the United States regime. He married Georgiana Herrick Dec. 14, 1862 in New York City. His son named Horace Bell, born in California in 1870 is thought to have followed his fathers footsteps as a soldier serving with the 14th Hussars in South Africa during the 1899 Boer wars.) Major Horace Bell, died June 29, 1918 in Los Angeles.

"Don" David W. Alexander was born in Ireland in 1809 and came to the United States with a brother in 1832. He was an early California politician and a pioneer to Los Angeles. He served on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 1853 and 1854. He was a successful trading business operator from 1844 till 1849 in the Port of San Pedro . In 1846 he favored the Americans and with a number of the latter he was made a prisoner by the Californios. He then formed the Alexander and Mellus Company, a mercantile business in Los Angeles, with Francis Mellus. During this time he also formed a partnership with 'General Phineas Banning' at San Pedro, until 1855, when he sold his interest. Alexander became involved in southern California real estate. In 1851, Alexander and Mellus Company purchased Rancho Providencia to In 1867, Alexander sold Rancho Providencia to David Burbank. The Rancho's Tujunga, Cahuenga and Providencia were patented to Alexander by the United States courts in 1872. Alexander was elected Sheriff of Los Angeles County for the term of 1855-1856 and also of 1876-1877[He was elected a member of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in 1853 and 1854. Alexander married Adelaida Mellus, widow of his partner Francis Mellus, in 1864. David's brother, George C. Alexander and Phineas Banning operated Alexander & Banning as a successful freight and stage line...Because Alexander owned the old early Califonia Ranchos Provendicia, Tujunga and Cahuenga the Californios in Horace Bell's passage refer to him as "Don" David.

"Don" Juan Sepulveda (1814 - 1898) was a true early Califonio politician and pioneer in Los Angeles. The great grand son of Francisco Xavier Sepulveda (1742 - 1788 a Mexican colonial soldier and patriarch of the prominent Spanish Mexican Sepulveda family in the early days of Southern California.), Sepulveda was born and raised in Los Angeles. Juan Sepulveda attended public schools there and went on to study law and become a prominent lawyer along with his brother Jose who was Mayor of Los Angeles in 1837 - 1848.. His other brother Ygnacio Rafael Sepulveda was killed at the Battle of La Mesa in 1847, the last Battle that the U.S. Fought to secure Los Angeles and Southern California . In 1839, in part due to his Great Grandfather's legacy, his uncle Francisco Sepulveda Jr., was granted a substantial amount of property - 30,000 acres (47 square miles ) of "mountains, mesa and shore land" by the Governor of the Californias, Juan Alvarado. The property was called the Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica (the Ranch of Saint Vicente and Saint Monica) and encompassed most of present day West Los Angeles' high dollar real estate. Although the Sepulveda's didn't need to work, Sepulveda and his brother followed in their father's footsteps by pursuing careers in civil service. As a reward for their contributions, the Mexican government awarded the brothers land now known as Rancho Palos Verdes(some of the wealthiest real estate in Southern California), along with a large part of what is today San Pedro. After the American conquest of California, Sepulveda remained active in politics under the new government. He became a judge and later was elected county supervisor. He served as County Supervisor in 1854 for the 3rd District, with "Don" David Alexander as co- supervisor. Sepulveda served as county supervisor for one term. He assumed office in 1854. Sepulveda turned to farming after leaving public office. In 1898 Juan Sepulveda died. He was 84, and was survived by his second wife, Susanna, and 11 children from his first and second marriage. Upon her death on May 31, 1923, the land in San Pedro owned by Mrs. Sepulveda was valued at $40 million. Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angles stretches some 42.8 miles ... crossing the city in a north-south direction, is named in honor of the Sepulveda family.

Captain William Mervine USN "El Comodoro" was born in 1791 and was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy. He served in the war of 1812, and in the Mexican American War. In Los Angeles he was hailed as the Man who led 203 Marines and sailors to be defeated at the battle of Dominguez Rancho. Later he served in the first six months of the Civil war commanding the Gulf Blockading Squadron, ill health forced him to retire. He died in mid September of 1868. Ships named in his honor are a Clemson Class Destroyer (DD-322) of the 1920's and a Gleaves Class World War II destroyer.

Captain José Antonio Ezequiel Carrillo (1796-1862) was a Califonio rancher, officer and Politician in the early years of California. During the Mexican American War and particularly in the Siege of Los Angeles, Carrillo was the 2nd in command to lead fifty Californio Lancer troopers in successfully holding off Captain Mervine and Marine Lt. Gillespies attempt to retake Los Angeles at Rancho Dominguez. Carrillo was 2nd in command during the last significant battles before surrendering to U.S. forces. He was present at the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga on January 1847. (Carrillo is refered to in the Horace Bell passage as "General" because hicarrios Commander Captain José María Flores, one of the officers, was chosen to act as comandante General. Captain Carrillo was made second in command. On October 26, 1846 Flores called the Deparmental Assembly of California into session and reorganized the remaining California government. On November 1 Flores became the temporary governor and comandante general. On December 3, Francisco Rico and Carrillo revolted against Flores dictatatorial policies. Flores was placed under arrest for his alleged scheme against the Chino prisoners and for allegedly stealing war funds. Flores decided not to send the Chino prisoners to Mexico City and no evidence was found in regards to the missing funds. On December 5 he was restored to power. Rico and Carrillo were jailed for the revolt, but released shortly afterwards ...Because of this and his ability to defeat the U.S. Navy and Marines in Battle ... Carrillo, although a Captain in rank, was always and forever after referred to by his ardent supporters troopers as "General".) Carrillo was a man of remarkable natural abilities for the most part, slight modifications in the conditions and his character might have made him the foremost of Californians. None excelled him in intrigue, and he was never without a plot on hand. A gambler, of questionable habits, and utterly careless in his associations, yet he never lost the privilege of associating with the best or the power of winning their friendship. There was nothing he would not do to oblige a friend or get the better of a foe; and there were few of any note who were not at one time or another both his foes and friends. No Californian could drink so much brandy as he with so little effect. Carrillo was a man of fine appearance and iron constitution; of generous impulses, one of the few original and prominent characters in early California.

"General" Phineas Banning was a Los Angeles Business Pioneer financier and entrepreneur known as "The Father of the Port of Los Angeles" (1830 - 1885) he was one of the founders of the town of Wilmington which was named for his birthplace (Wilmington Delaware) . Besides operating a freighting business, Banning operated a stage coach line between San Pedro and Wilmington, and later between Banning California, which was named in his honor, and Yuma, Arizona. During the Civil war he ceded land to the Union Army to build a fort in Wilmington, the Drum Barracks . He was appointed Brigadier General of the First Brigade of the militia, and used the title of general for the rest of his life. For the last two decades of his life. Banning spent the 1870s in a frenzy of activity. He worked as senator in the California Senate, campaigning for greater transportation connections to the city of Los Angeles and the growing port, his personal project. Banning's legacy lives on. . His drive and ambition laid the foundations for what would become one of the busiest ports in the world. Banning's chief residence, constructed in Wilmington CA., in 1864, is open to the public as a museum which has displays depicting Victorian era California life. The Drum Barracks, also known as Camp Drum and the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, is one of the last remaining original American Civil War era military facilities in the Los Angeles area (the second being Santa Catalina Islands Isthmus Civil War Barracks, located on Catalina Islands Isthmus or Two Harbors as it is known -ironically Bannings sons would own Catalina Island after the war.) Camp Drum, has been designated as a California Historic Landmark, a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and has been listed on the national Register of Historic Places. Since 1987, it has been operated as a Civil War museum that is open to the public.

When the federal government spring boarded from Commodore Stockton USN Captain Mervine USN and Lt. Gillespies USMC first actions in and from San Pedro in 1846, during the war with Mexico (when the U.S. Navy briefly established a naval base at San Pedro but, abandoned it after the war..) they began to realize the military significance of having San Pedro Bay and Long Beach Harbor.

In 1908 after visit of President Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet to Long Beach the Federal Government approved funds for the 1914 Long Beach and San Pedro Full break water to support commerce .. and military operations.

At that point the government took notice of the region. It mainly focused on three primary things that made the ports of San Pedro (Los Angeles Harbor) and Long Beach in San Pedro Bay, California, suitable for the anchorage of the Pacific Fleet:

1) A 2.11 mile breakwater on the Western San Pedro side of the bay created over 600 acres of anchorage space, much of which was over 40 feet deep.

2) Operational conditions were reported to be near perfect with good weather prevailing 70 percent of the year.

3) The industrial port of San Pedro and Wilmington, Phineas Banning pioneered created and made prosperous in the post Mexican American war era of 1850's -1887 turned the port into a commerce center...which could support military operations.

The Navy returned in 1917 to build a training station and a submarine base...in various names and roles Long Beach Naval Shipyard (NSY): aka the late great Naval Station Long Beach, Naval Operating Base, Long Beach; Naval Operating Base, San Pedro; Long Beach Naval Shipyard and San Pedro Submarine Base ...they operated from the early 1900's until 1997.)when they were closed in by Congress due to military cutbacks. Thus was the creation of one of the busiest harbors in the world. We credit the actions of Captain Mervine and the foresight of General Phineas Banning for all of that...

These men were all Californios through and through vehement freedom loving patriots, in their heart of hearts. Who innately understood what the American Trinity was with out having to create a name for it ... From the ending of the Spanish Mission authority, the innovations, embracements and welcomers of all who lived in Califonia embodied the unique and key to America, components of what this American Trinity encomapases.

So what is this Unique Value System - "TheAmerican Trinity" - that is so symbolic of how even old enemies can share a fourth of July together? And why is the United States of America Unique in its freedom and even California forever part of it all?

The American Trinity is a unique value system in all the modern world. It is the three values unique to the United States and it's core essence as a nation. They are:

E pluibus unium

A Latin phrase meaning: "from many: one"

We don't care where you are from. How much you make. We don't care about your bloodline, racial, ethnic or religious origins. We do care that you work with us responsibly, to make the United States of America the great and wonderful place it is and can forever be. If you agree to this, then you are one of us, no matter your color, creed, race or heritage.

In God we Trust

The U.S is founded on the notion that God is central and is the source of our value system in the United States. Hence, the reason the Declaration of Independence says we have inalienable rights. These rights are not granted by great thinkers, or humanism, but by God. Because if given to us by people, these rights could then be taken away from us by other people amongst us.

You might say other nations - like the French or Spain or Mexico - have liberty. Yes, they do, but unlike the United States of America they do not have Liberty-In God We Trust and E pluibus Unium all together as a set of national principles. Liberty in Europe is something you end up with (because people say it is so). In the USA Liberty is your business. Here you are only born equal, where you end up is your business.

The business of the USA is to enable you, to have you, end up wherever your talents, abilities... and yes luck, brings you. We do not believe in Liberty and equality, because they often end up in conflict. If you enforce liberty and equality together, you often end up telling people how much they can earn etc.

The Battle of San Pasqual

Today, we are fooling with this American Trinity because too many Americans, especially well educated enlightened Americans are evading common sense and prescribing to the European system and rethinking as men as humanists something they can not take away from us, without eventually using force.

Being an American is an attitude, understood by our forefathers who signed the Declaration of Independence and like the Californios who together embraced the ideal of the U.S.of A. - an attitude which leaves behind those who knew better for them and wanted the responsibilities which comes with freedom - which the American Trinity embodies.

Captain Benjamin D. Moore , of The Mormon Battalion was honored by the dedication and naming of Fort Moore in Los Angeles, Fort Moore was officially dedicated on July 4, 1847, and remained in service only until 1853, when it was decommissioned. In later years Fort Moore was leveled and became a public playground. Captain Moore's fellow Mormon Battalion, the U.S. 1st Dragoons, and the New York Volunteers who raised the American flag over the fort on July 4th, 1847 at the first Independence Day celebration in Los Angeles, were permanently honored an memorialized by the Fort Moore Hill Pioneer Memorial in 1957. The Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial is a large stone memorial wall built on part of the fort's original location facing Hill Street. As the largest bas-relief military monument in the United States, it was funded by the County of Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Board of Education and the Department of Water and Power. The memorial was designed by Kazumi Adachi and Dike Nagano and dedicated on Jul 3rd 1957. It features four different panels, a 78 foot by 45 foot terra cotta panel designed by Saltus, award winning artist. Henry Kreis is the most prominent feature and portrays the July 4th 1847 event. Other panels represent the agricultural and spiritual foundation of the region; transportation that shaped the city at the end of the 19th century; and the crucial role that water and electricity play in a large modern city. An 80-foot wide waterfall sits to the right of the panels. It has been out of service since the 1977 drought. The monument also includes a 237-foot long brick facade that serves as a backdrop for a 68-foot high pylon designed by noted American sculptor Albert Stewart. The pylon features a 16 foot by 11 foot American eagle as well as an incised relief on the low wall along the sidewalk depicting the 1,100-mile march of the Mormon Battalion from Counsel Bluffs, Iowa to Los Angeles, California.

Ironically, few in Los Angeles and California - let alone the rest of our nation know of the significance about the why only two 4th of July signers of the Declaration of Independence or events like the 1853 Banning Fourth of July or the dedication of Fort Moore- let alone a firm understanding of the American Trinity - are essential factors to all reasons and whys we as a nation of responsible individuals celebrate every 4th of July. The celebration is partly symbolic of how everyday, throughout our nation(including California ) "rough men" of all races colors and creed's, to borrow a quote, " stand ready to do harm, so good people can sleep at night." Be they the military keeping watch or those civic and business minded patriots who tirelessly work together to keep the American Trinity alive.

I'll wager though in your heart, you celebrate the 4th for the same similar unspoken reasons that the American Trinity and those who wanted independence in the United States have been proven by history to desire, ever since God gave us the insight to create our nation and include those destined to be part of it... responsibly.

"America is the only place you can come to and call yourself an American."

A Chance To Put It On The Record

www.myfamilymemoirs.com is a website where anyone is welcome to tell the story of their own life or the life of someone who deserves recognition and save it for posterity as well as put it before an interested audience and professional agents, publishers and producers who just might find a best seller or a great TV show. The founder of the website is Monika Jensen-Stevenson, who, along with her husband Bill Stevenson wrote the bestseller, Kiss The Boys Goodbye: How the United States Betrayed its own POWs in Vietnam which was dedicated in part to ". . . the men of U.S Special Forces who wanted to go back and get them (the prisoners.)"

A large part of her motivation in creating the site grew out of her increasing frustration with not being able to include great numbers of important cases of men left behind because there is just so much material that fits into a book. It was a situation she encountered with all of her books, and earlier when she was an Emmy award winning producer with Sixty Minutes. Her goal with this website is not just to list names of MIA/POWs and those who were willing to and often did sacrifice everything for country. She wants people to know that these men were truly the best and brightest of their generation; to see photos of them, learn about their families and what they accomplished and keep it on record, in alphabetical order so that even our great and great great grandchildren will have easy access to it. A comprehensive record of this kind can help identify any POWs who were, or may be, still alive. As he years pass, this possibility becomes more and more remote. But there is always the hope for setting the record straight.

Monika says that she can only achieve this admittedly huge goal with the help of as many veterans as possible. The website is free and easy to use. Memoirs can be as short as a paragraph, captioned photo or as long as a book, photo album or video. Check out the current memoir of the month by First Sergeant Joseph Welsh (Ret.) who as military adviser to the website will be happy to help anyone who has technical questions. And pass the link along to family and friends. www.myfamilymemoirs.com

Let Us Know What You Think About Last Month's Newsletter

As I said in my comment your last piece is beautifully done. You must have put an amazing amount of work in it

Best as always,

As usual, One of the best Military and Police News sources on the Web!

What a great piece!

Cy Pritchard

This is a very deep piece. Warrior as Philosopher. Beautifully done.

Monika Jensen-Stevenson

I have a teenage son who greatly admires my military service. He would like to be just like me (much to my chagrin), although I have told him repeatedly to be his own person. His grades came out at the end of this year and they were terrible. I was at wits end. Then your column came out and I printed it and made him read it. Although he is young to be a warrior I feel your column addressed so much of what I wanted to say.

Thanks Dave, Keep it up you never know when you will touch soemone in a special, much needed way.

God Bless.
George Worthy

Hi Dave,
This months message is very inspiration and insightful. I plan to re-read it regularly and to continue to question myself, too.

Would like a slight correction/rebuttal. A reply was written by H.Woody Williams stating that no national memorial is erected to honor our mothers.

If you would look at "The Square" in Ashland, Pa. you would see just such a statue.

I will take a picture and send it to you.

I also agree whole-heartly on the article for I know what my mother went through when I departed for the first time in 1962 and now my wife seeing our son for the third time. Twice in Iraq, now in Africa (USN). Keep up the 'great' work.

I'll read this letter.
Joe in Pa.

Outstanding: you continue to bullseye the need VS the wants. Feelings ALWAYS mislead eventually due to no morals/standards inside feelings; thus pedophiles and criminals justify their misdeeds by their feelings ascending to command and control in lieu of THOUGHTS and STANDARDS being the criteria of evaluation. Emotion must NEVER be the criteria of validation or any activity that generates a fuzzy feeling becomes acceptable. A warrior must think not feel, kill with professional detachment when required to kill, train with thoughtfulness of accomplishment to perfection to ensure the mission is completed w/ minimal death and destruction.

Thank you.
Steven W. Wilgus

I'll will print this out and pass it on, I'll read it often for strength and focus.

A fellow SF warrior,

Response to last month's "Word of Truth"

Thank you very much for that very enlightening message from the Word!!!

I have just finished my series on the Armor of God, and your message is just right on time!!!

May I ask permission from you that I may quote many portions of your message in my lessons to the people of God in this part of the globe??? am very sure, they will be blessed!!

jaime o. bayaban,

A little perspective

The prelude to the "response" below, from Colonel Bud Day, Medal of Honor recipient - prisoner of war survivor - reads "I didn't expect to be reminded of my treatment some 36 years ago on this holiday weekend but our politicians find it worthy to ignore what some have tried to recount to them, who have actually been there."

I got shot down over N Vietnam in 1967...a sq commander.

After I returned in 1973... I published 2 books that dealt a lot with "real torture" in Hanoi. Our make believe president is branding our country as a bunch of torturers when he has no idea what torture is.

As for me. Put thru a mock execution because I would not respond...pistol whipped on the head...same event... Couple of days later...hung by my feet all day. I escaped and got recaptured a couple of weeks later... I got shot and recaptured. Shot was OK...what happened after was not.

They marched me to Vinh... Put me in the rope trick, trick. Almost pulled my arms out of the sockets. Beat me on the head with a little wooden rod until my eyes were swelled shut, and my unshot, unbroken hand a pulp.

Next day hung me by the arms...rebroke my right wrist...wiped out the nerves in my arms that control the hands. Rolled my fingers up into a ball. Only left the slightest movement of my L forefinger. So I started answering with some incredible lies.

Sent me to Hanoi strapped to a barrel of gas in the back of a truck.

Hanoi...on my knees.. Rope trick again. Beaten by a big fool.

Into leg irons on a bed in Heartbreak Hotel.

Much kneeling--hands up at Zoo.

Really bad beating for refusing to condemn Lyndon Johnson.

Several more kneeling events. I could see my knee bone thru kneeling holes.

There was an escape from the annex to the Zoo. I was the Senior Officer of a large building because of escape. They started a mass torture of all commanders.

I think it was July 7, 1969...they started beating me with a car fan belt. In first 2 days I took over 300 strokes. Then stopped counting because I never thought I would live thru it.

They continued day-nite torture to get me to confess to a non-existent part in the escape. This went on for at least 3 days. On my knees. Fan belting... Cut open my scrotum with fan belt stroke. Opened up both knee holes again. My fanny looked like hamburger. I could not lie on my back.

They tortured me into admitting that I was in on the escape and that my 2 room-mates knew about it.

The next day I denied the lie.

They commenced torturing me again with 3- 6- or 9 strokes of the fan belt every day from about July 11 or 12rh...to 14 October 1969. I continued to refuse to lie about my roommates again.

Now, the point of this is that our make-believe president has declared to the world that we (U.S.) are a bunch of torturers... Thus it will be OK to torture us next time when they catch us....because that is what the U.S. Does.

Our make-believe president is a know nothing fool who thinks that pouring a little water on some one's face, or hanging a pair of womens pants over an Arabs head is TORTURE. He is a meathead.

I just talked to MOH holder Leo Thorsness who was also in my sq in jail.... As was John McCain ... And we agree that McCain does not speak for the POW group when he claims that Al Gharib was torture... Or that "water boarding" is torture.

Our president and those fools around him who keep bad mouthing our great country are a disgrace to the United States. Please pass this info on to Sean Hannity. He is free to use it to point out the stupidity of the claims that water boarding ...which has no after effect... Is torture. If it got the Arab to cough up the story about how he planned the attack on the twin towers in NYC ... Hurrah for the guy who poured the water.

George Everett "Bud" Day (born February 24, 1925) is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and Command Pilot who served during the Vietnam War. He is often cited as being the most decorated U.S. Service member sinceGeneral Douglas MacArthur, having received some seventy decorations, a majority for actions in combat. Day is a recipient of the Medal of Honor.

Government Bail-Out of Banks & Companies

By Sir Peter Bonnell

It is both unconstitutional and illegal for the government to use taxpayer money to bail out Banks or Companies and also the government is forbidden to own or invest in private enterprise. This money can only legally and constitutionally be paid TO THE TAXPAYERS.

The present state of the economy should and would be solved by setting a formula based on the income tax paid by all taxpayers in the last several years and divide that into the trillions of dollars being issued for all bailouts. This money should be sent in the form of checks immediately to those taxpayers in that amount. It is the taxpayer"™s money and can only be sent directly to them legally"¦and ONLY to those that have PAID income tax.

These taxpayers would then be putting these trillions of dollars in the economy, buying cars, houses and other products saving the dying companies also"¦yes, and even the banks because some items would have to be financed. This would solve the entire crisis we now face.

55% of the original bail-out $1 Trillion dollars went to communist Chinese banks, 45% to International Bankers who also own a large portion of the communist Chinese banks and only approximately 5% to U.S. banks. And what happened to this money, they just put it in their pockets and the stock market declined even further"¦and much more rapidly.

The bankers that have broken laws should also be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Any country refusing to extradite these people to us for trial should cause a boycott of all products from that country into the U.S. and also from the U.S. to them. In addition any and all foreign aide should cease to these countries.

All monies that have been paid out and not recouped by the government should be paid back to these taxpayers in the now depreciated value of preferred stock ownership in those companies rather than allow the government any part of ownership in those companies because THAT is also illegal and unconstitutional.

If all Americans would write their Senators and Representative and demand this be instituted the whole economic crises would be solved. All members of Congress have sworn an oath "To defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States" any voting for the bail-outs are breaking their oath of office and they should be removed from office immediately. Tell them this when you write them. If they vote for the bail-outs rather than pay the money directly to the taxpayers, work to have them removed from office.

In my original column "The Bank Bail-Out" I mentioned this solution, I did not hear even one politician mention it on TV or in the news, only on Bloomberg TV did one investment advisor quote this solution almost word for word. I am sure patriotic congressmen such as Ron Paul (R) and Zack Space (D) and others would push to have this plan implemented.

All Americans should become involved in this - it's YOUR MONEY and ONLY YOUR MONEY.

Retired Green Beret shoots intruder, gets court martial

BREVARD, Jan. 19, 2008 - Retired Army Green Beret James T. (Smokey) Taylor got his court martial this weekend and came away feeling pretty good about it. Taylor, at age 79, is one of the oldest members of Chapter XXXIII (The Larry Thorne Chapter) of the Special Forces Association. He was placed on trial by fellow Chapter XXXIII members under the charge of "failing to use a weapon of sufficient caliber" in the shooting of an intruder at his home in Knoxville , TN , in November.

The court martial, of course, was very much tongue in cheek. The event itself was deadly serious. Taylor had been awakened in the early morning hours of November 5, 2007,when an intruder broke into his home. He investigated the noises with one of his many weapons in hand. "It was just after Halloween, on Monday morning at 4:30," Taylor said. I heard this commotion at the door and grabbed my fishing gun, a little .22 revolver, to see what was going on. I got to the front door and this fellow had ripped my security door out of its frame. He said, ‘you're going to have to kill me. I'm coming in.'"

Luke Air Force Base

True Story...

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must Have stung quite a bit.

The complaint:

Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Any response would be appreciated.

The response:

Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-1 6s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, 'Who m do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Word of Truth

The Word of Truth - Alive and Powerful

The Word of Truth

Happy 4th of July

By Rev G.J. Rako
LTC (Ret)

Government of the people, by the people, and for the people…the land of the free and home of the brave is becoming the land of the enslaved and the home of the spineless. The have-nots are taking from the haves, through redistribution of wealth.

Every problem we have in this country can be directly traced back to the five hundred or so tyrants that make up our three braches of government. We elected them. Therefore, "we the people" only have ourselves to blame. The constitution of the United States has become little more than a list of suggestions that most of our government servants refuse to follow. They trample the constitution under foot every day of their miserable lives.

The proposed (and original) hate crime legislation ("Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act," which is better known to conservatives as the "Pedophile Protection Act is the latest in a string of insane legislation. The forthcoming "poison pill" amendment will mirror House bill, H.R. 1913. This has already passed 249-175 along strict party lines, which makes "sexual orientation," "gender," and "gender identity" into federally-protected classes under the law, and codifies federal protection of up to 547 types of sexually deviant behaviors, including:

Incest - sex with one's offspring (a crime, of course)

Necrophilia - sexual relations with a corpse, also a crime

Pedophilia - sex with an underage child, another crime

Zoophilia - a crime in numerous states

Voyeurism - a criminal offense in most states

Fronteurism - a man rubbing against an unknown woman's buttocks

Coprophilia - sexual arousal from feces

Urophilia - sexual arousal from urine (whom seek to create a protected class of people.)

Whatever happened to equality under the law? Hate crime legislation makes the motivation of a crime the crime itself. Motivation is thought, so therefore government can now regulate your thoughts.

Since when is thinking a crime? Only since hate crime legislation was signed into law. Thoughts lead to words, so then, not only is freedom of speech is gone, but now freedom of thinking is also to be regulated.

The totalitarian government we now have will take this legislation and parlay it into imprisonment for anyone that dares to disagree with their progressive agenda.

They will shut down all media that opposes their evil plans. They whine and complain about the alleged atrocities at Abu Ghraib, while dreaming of the day they can lock you up as a dissident. Sounds like the old Soviet Union. Happy forth of July!

The progressives have an idea to lift up the poor and downtrodden. How noble this sounds, no more poverty. Yet Jesus Christ, the creator of the universe, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end said, "the poor, you will have with you always."

The progressive system is to take from the rich and working and give to the sick, lame, and lazy. Their great cause is to make us all equal by destroying the middle class and the wealthy. We will all be poor and dependent on government (the great messiah.) Why should you have freedom to work hard, be successful, and get ahead by creating wealth and jobs? Those that are lazy, criminal, or stupid cannot, or will not achieve wealth, so we must take it away from you and give it to them. Redistribution of wealth was a campaign promise of the "one", remember Joe the plumber?

This is treason! As members of the armed forces, we took an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies foreign and domestic. Do you see any domestic enemies? Are our enemies holding elected office? These same people are systematically dismantling our nation and incredibly, they took that same oath.

If I tried to list every anti constitutional law, bill or pending legislation the stack of paper would reach the moon. Each of you knows that our freedoms are eroding at a mind-boggling pace, and each of you can compile your own list of evils perpetrated by our elected servants of the people. The question is, what people are they serving? And yes, they are both democrats and republicans. Happy 4th of July!

The government cannot save you.

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus says the Lord, " Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the Lord.

Psalms 146:3 Do not trust in princes (elected or bureaucrats), In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.

Psalms 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.

Jeremiah 17:7 " Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord And whose trust is the Lord.

The answer to the end of prosperity in America is not found in mankind. The problems of this once great nation will not be solved by political activism.

Your happiness, security, or prosperity does not depend upon who is in office, but rather in the living God who is on His throne in heaven. The solutions to our problems, whether they are personal, or national are found in the unique person of the universe.

If you have not yet made that most important of all decisions, the decision to believe in the name of the uniquely born Son of God, Jesus Christ, then take a few moments to consider the issue.

There is a God in heaven and He loves you very much, His name is Jesus Christ. In order to benefit from the Word of God you must be a member of God’s family.

John 3:16 "For God loved the world so much, that He gave His uniquely born Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Acts 4:12 "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

John 10:30 "I and the Father are one."

John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

John 17:11 "I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.

John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

Galatians 2:16 Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

Romans 4:20-22 Yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. Therefore, it was also credited to him as righteousness.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Once you have made this most important of all decisions you become a new creature in Christ (2 Cor 5:17). As a new spiritual being you can understand the things of the Spirit.

John 4:24 God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth (Holy Spirit and Bible doctrine).

Understanding the cause of our problems will lead us to the solution to our problems.

Isaiah 5:13 Therefore My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude is parched with thirst.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest (nation). Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

If you are interested in becoming part of the solution instead of being part of the problem then you must make the Word of God a priority in your life. True Christian patriots will fulfill the Biblical commands to take the high ground of the spiritual life.

2 Chronicles 7:14 and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Eph 4:13 Until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature, which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

1 Corinthians 14:20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (thinking), so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Philippians 2:5 Have this thinking in you which was also in Christ Jesus,

Spiritual maturity is attained only by transferring Bible doctrine from the pages of scripture into your soul (thinking).

Ephesians 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.

Titus 1:9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

There is absolutely no place for a Christians to involve themselves in revolution, armed violence, or destruction of property. Government is an institution created by God to protect the human race from itself. Gods plan for the human race is nationalism. Internationalism or globalism is evil. God made this clear at the destruction of the tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9).

We are to obey those in government no matter how much we may disagree with them.

Romans 13:1-14 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore, whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is due them tax to whom tax is due, custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Mark 12:17 And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s." And they were amazed at Him.

Our lives can be full of happiness, security, peace, and contentment. These things are guaranteed to those believers who love God.

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

2 John 1:3 Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Living your life in the light of eternity changes your focus from your insignificant problems to the One who has provided solutions to all problems. God has a perfect plan for your life.

Learn the Word of God, trust what you learn, believe that what God has promised, He is also able to bring to deliver (Rom 4:21).

Happy 4th of July!

Blue Warrior

Blue Warrior
with Sgt. Glenn French

Patriot Warriors

Recently, a friend shared some photos of a funeral that was for a returning Army Warrior from Iraq. The photos depicted country streets lined with men, women, and children that had all stopped what ever they were doing that day to honor the fallen Warrior. The images reminded me how much I love this country and why I wear a shield.

Most of these grateful citizens were holding large American flags in their hands and if they didn't have a flag then most of them had a hand over their hearts.

A U.P.S. delivery driver was pulled off the road and stood at attention with his hand over his heart. The cars in the procession all had American flags in the passenger windows as they drove past.

School children were standing elbow to elbow and all of them were waiving small parade style American flags. Business owners and customers stopped doing business long enough to come outside and pay their respects along the side of the street with their hands over their hearts as the procession passed.

The theme here is simple, these Americans were honoring a Patriot Warrior. They also wore the grief on their face as if it were their own husband, father or brother passing them when that Hurst with the flag draped coffin slowly drove by.

To witness this type of Patriotism is a reminder of why we risk our tomorrows for these good Americans. Whether we hit the streets everyday in a squad car or we gear up for another patrol mission over seas, we all have one thing in common, we are all Patriot Warriors.

You can find no greater Patriot than the one whom risks his life for his country. I would like to remind you Warriors out there that the silent majority, values and cherishes the Patriot that fights for his country. It is the Warrior whom they rely on daily for their safety, peace and freedom.

It is easy to lose focus of the true meaning of our Warrior Spirit. Every day we are confronted with people who's values are less than desirable. Every day the news media reports only the things we do wrong. Every day we battle with mortality as we work in the world that most people fear. As, I leave for work I kiss my youngest son on the forehead without hesitating, knowing that this could be the last. It is this kind of commitment that makes the Patriot Warrior.

Every day we must remind ourselves that we are America's Patriot Warriors. Here are Webster's definitions of a Patriot and a Warrior:

Patriot: One who loves his or her country and supports it's authority and interests.

Warrior: A man experienced or engaged in warfare.

My definition of a Patriot Warrior: Those men and woman whom dress for battle every day, willing to sacrifice their own life to fight for and preserve the peace and freedoms of all Americans.

When I think of a Patriot Warrior I think of my father, who is a retired Command Sergeant Major with the U.S. Army. After serving two tours in Viet-Nam he retuned home and was hitch hiking in uniform from the airport to our home. He was met with people that preferred to spit at him then give him a ride home to his infant son and wife. Many years would pass but when the Gulf War started to take root he didn't hesitate to defend those same Americans who cast him aside. He served in the Gulf War and his selflessness to serve in another war is a shinning example of a Patriot Warrior.

The great Shawnee Warrior, Tecumseh (Crouching Panther) said it best:

Let us form one body, one heart, and defend to the last warrior our country, our homes, our liberty, and the graves of our fathers.
  - Tecumseh, 1813

So, regardless if you patrol the streets in a blue uniform or patrol foreign deserts in camouflage remember that the silent majority in this country counts on you to deliver peace and freedom.

Patriots of long ago count on us, as you are America's sons of patriotism. It is your duty to honor their sacrifices and carry the torch of freedom.

Creating training with realism is the primary factor that will help build better cognitive thinking skills so when SWAT cops are subjected to actual combat they will feel that they've already been there and been exposed to that environment. There are several techniques you can use when training SWAT cops to achieve this, but introducing stress into all of your training is paramount.

Glen French is a Sergeant with the Sterling Heights(Metro Detroit) Police Department has 18 years police experience andcurrently serves as the Sergeant of the Sterling Heights Police DepartmentTraining Bureau, Crime Prevention and DARE unit. What has Really Changed?

This section has been dedicated to the new "call for change" and we say there's nothing new about change.

What Has Really Changed?

The goose that lays the golden eggs
Is beginning to realize she is a goose

Who created 50 million jobs in America? Who paid wages fo high that the poorest workman could afford luxuries even the rich in other countries never had? Who paid for the research to develop new postwar products which could be providing greater prosperity than the world ever saw?

American industry—spurred on by the chance for profit.

It has paid more taxes, provided more jobs, paid higher wages, produced more goods at lower prices, developed more national security than any other system in any other time in any other part of the world.

Now this great force which has done all this for America is being treated by elements of government and labor as though it were an enemy. Industry is told what it must pay but government wants to decide what it can keep; industry managers who supply the brains to keep all business going are cut back and back in profit an the right to manage; a thousand regulations trip, hamstring and block business progress. The wonder is that American industry and those who own and manage it bother to keep on hoping and working.

It might pay all of us who share in industry's benefits (all 129,999,000 of us) to examine the thousand or so who are trying to kill it. Regardless of their names, the accent is foreign.

"The idea that even the brightest person or group of bright people, much less the U.S. Congress, can wisely manage an economy has to be the height of arrogance and conceit. Why? It is impossible for anyone to possess the knowledge that would be necessary for such an undertaking."
   - Economist Walter F. Williams

"Government has only two ways of getting money other than raising taxes. It can go into the money market and borrow, competing with its own citizens and driving up interest rates, which it has done, or it can print money, and it's done that. Both methods are inflationary."
   - Ronald Reagan

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

"Old Glory"

Tribute to the flag

I have seen the glories of art and archietecture; and of river and mountains.

I have seen the sunset on Jungfrau and the moon rise on Mount Blanc.

But the fairest vision on which these eyes ever rested was the flag of my country in a foreign port!

Beautiful as a flower to those who love it, terrible as a meteor to those who hate it, it is the symbol of the power and the glory, and the honor of the millions of Americans."

Senator George F. Hoar (1826-1904)

My Kind of Doctor!

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! ... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans ! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

Eat and drink what you like.

Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Humorous Aphorism Attributed to E.B. White Summarizes these Distinctions

To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.

To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.

To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.

To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.

To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.

And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast

Underwater Swimmer Navigation for the CCBA Combat Swimmer

If you are Americas First Frogman John Spence, you know all about the effest of having a crappy underwater compass that does not work!

In fact in 2000 when he was made an honorary SEAL Association member and vistied Little Creek, when asked what would equipment He would liek to see all he could ask to see was the underwater compasses. Because in 1942 -1943 the ones that he and his OSS Special Operations Dive Unit cadre were given - waterproofed Boy Scout wrist compasses(!) Weren't He and his cadre Had doctor Lambertsen deign a moee effective instrument to be implemented operationally... yet!

When following a compass heading many 'frogs' (swimmers) on CCBA make one serious mistake

They do not hold the Lubber Line of the Compass parallel to the longittudial axis of their body, or direction of motion, when the Heading is read, consequently they may follow the proper Heading and proceed in a wrong direction!

When underwater swimming on a compass course DO NOT look down!

Instead, sight over your compass!

What kind of compass do you think this swimmer is using?

SEALs train with Army pilots in Northern Edge

Lance Cpl. Ryan A. Rholes

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska (Army News Service, June 23, 2009) - Thirteen operators from a west-coast based SEAL team performed final checks on their equipment as a one-minute warning bell rang shrilly throughout the hull of the CH-47D "Chinook."

After descending steeply, the helicopter's back ramp dropped, and the SEAL team sprinted from the Chinook with their weapons up, setting up security as the helicopter lifted out of its two-wheel landing and began circling in the air before landing again to repeat the procedure.

The SEAL team worked with Army pilots from Task Force 49, 1-52 Aviation Battalion, B Company, also known as the "Sugar Bears," in a training evolution, June 15, designed to promote and develop interoperability between the two branches.

The exercise was part of Exercise Northern Edge 2009, which is one of a series of U.S. Pacific Command exercises that prepare joint forces to respond to crises in the Asian-Pacific region.

Locations of Iran's Nuclear Program

By Maseh Zarif

Iran is building a nuclear reactor near the Iranian city of Arak and currently operates a heavy water production plant in nearby Khondab, which has been active since 2006.[1] The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) first inspected the Arak site in 2003.[2] Since then, Iran has limited the IAEA's access to the reactor site, which remains under construction. Most recently, the head of the IAEA noted in a February 2009 report that Iran refused to allow the IAEA to conduct a verification inspection at the Arak reactor site.[3] IAEA inspection of the Arak site is a prerequisite to ensuring that Iran does not use the reactor complex under construction to separate plutonium from the reactor's spent fuel.[4] The capability to extract plutonium from used reactor fuel would give Iran an alternative path for fueling a nuclear weapon.[5]

The use of heavy water at Arak makes the reactor a potential source of plutonium needed for building a nuclear weapon. That is, all reactors are fueled with uranium-produced plutonium, but only a heavy water reactor provides the plutonium suitable for use in a nuclear weapon.[6] A heavy water reactor – fueled with natural uranium – uses the deuterium isotope, instead of the hydrogen isotope used in a light-water process.[7] The deuterium in heavy water is important because it plays a central role in a "boost gas" that can produce a lighter and smaller plutonium-fueled nuclear warhead.

Most importantly note the difference between Australia and Switzerland at the bottom of this.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control.

From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.-

In 1911, Turkey established gun control.

From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938

From 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.-

China established gun control in 1935.

From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated-

Guatemala established gun control in 1964.

From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970.

From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956..

From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.-

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

1: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.

2: Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent..

3: Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety as decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we're 'subjects'.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends. The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

Imperial Jets Assists with Evacuations from Battle-Worn Somalia

CharterX Professional Broker Imperial Jets, a leading private jet charter firm with headquarters based in New York City, is currently assisting with evacuations out of the at-threat areas of Somalia from their office located in Tanzania.

The company is securing private aircraft to extract people from the troubled regions of Somaliland and Puntland. The office of Imperial Jets in Tanzania has received a considerable amount of calls from people seeking air travel out of Somalia.

The US government has issued a travel warning against trips to Somalia, including northern Somalia (Puntland) due to the insecure situation caused by the ongoing border disputes and terror attacks. Furthermore, armed groups have demonstrated their intent to attack air operations at the International Airport of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

AF Reinventing Itself Mass changes in the way AF to be structured.

Air Force officials have announced plans to retire 250 "legacy fighters" such as the F-15 and F-16 to fund a smaller and more capable force.

This will include procuring munitions such as the small diameter bomb, hard-target weapons and the AIM-120D and AIM-9X missiles.

The money will also be used to redistribute people for "higher priority missions," according to a new release from the Pentagon.

"The Combat Air Forces restructuring plan would accelerate the retirement of approximately 250 aircraft, which includes 112 F-15 Eagles, 134 F-16 Fighting Falcons and three A-10 Thunderbolt IIs," a spokesman said. "This does not include the five fighters previously scheduled for retirement in FY10. (fiscal year 2010)."

Not that the Air Force is giving up on getting more F-22s., Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told a congressional hearing last month that if production is halted at 187 planes - short of the 243 requested by the Air Force - training could be especially hard-hit. Administration plans to halt production of the F-22 fighter would pose "moderate to high risk" if the U.S. finds itself in two wars at the same time.

"We will have to manage this fleet in a different way than a much larger fleet," he warned.

Navy SEAL to Launch into Space

A Navy SEAL in NASA's astronaut program will launch into space June 13.

Cmdr. Chris Cassidy of York, Maine, will be the second SEAL to launch into space since Capt. William Shepherd in 1992. Cassidy is a mission specialist and a part of the STS-127 crew that will work on upgrading the International Space Station (ISS).

Major Darin Blatt and Major Glenn Bollinger III

In July 2008, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, returned to Fort Bragg after serving seven consecutive deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The battalion's return was its first respite since 9/11 and marked the beginning of an 18-month dwell period.

Shortly after the return, Lieutenant Colonel Donald R. Franklin assumed command of the 3rd Battalion. Upon taking command, he challenged his battalion to take full advantage of the 18-month period to recharge, sharpen individual and collective warfighting skills, and most significantly, to find innovative methods of progressively improving on the battalion's core competency as combat advisers.

The M82 rifle is a high-powered heavy sniper rifle developed by the American Barrett Firearms Company. It is currently used by many units and armies around the world, including the American Special Forces. It is also called the "Light Fifty" for its .50 caliber BMG (12.7 mm) load. The weapon is found in two variants—the original M82A1 (and A3) and the bullpup M82A2. The M82A2 is no longer manufactured.

The M82 is a short recoil semi-automatic firearm. When the gun is fired, the barrel initially recoils for a short distance (about an inch/25 mm) being securely locked by the rotating bolt. After the short travel, a post on the bolt engaged in the curved cam track in the receiver turns the bolt to unlock it from the barrel. As soon as the bolt unlocks, the accelerator arm strikes it back, transferring part of the recoil energy of the barrel to the bolt to achieve reliable cycling. Then the barrel is stopped and the bolt continues back, to extract and eject a spent case. On its return stroke, the bolt strips the fresh cartridge from the box magazine and feeds it into the chamber and finally locks itself to the barrel. The striker also is cocked on the return stroke of the bolt. The gun is fed from a large detachable box magazine holding up to 10 rounds.

US Army Unveils Two Lighter, More Lethal Weapons

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two weapons in development are expected to be more precision-oriented, lighter and lethal: the laser-sighted XM-25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System and the Lightweight .50-Caliber Machine Gun.

The XM-25 will undergo field-testing this summer while the LW50MG is already being tested by Soldiers.

Program Executive Office Soldier at Fort Belvoir, Va., opened its doors earlier this month to give the media a look at the two weapons and other new gear in development that will lighten a Soldier's load yet improve survivability, lethality and comfort.

Foreign Officers Patrol U.S. Ports

U.S. agents trying to stop contraband, arms and drug smuggling at the port of Los Angeles will soon get a new partner in their decades-old battle - an officer from Mexico.

The move is part of a larger effort at some of the nation's largest and busiest seaports to enlist officers from foreign countries. U.S. officials have invited officials from Argentina, Colombia and Mexico to join their anti-smuggling crackdowns.

They hope that bringing foreign intelligence stateside will help break down the close-knit networks smugglers use to ferry contraband across borders.

"We look at it as real-time, firsthand information sharing," said Tim Durst, chief of contraband smuggling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "It is one of the few ways to go back to the source of smuggling activity."

The Quiet Professionals: The Untold Story of U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan

Doug Stanton

Author of Horse Soldiers

Horse Soldiers is the untold story of how a small band of U.S. Special Forces soldiers secretly entered Afghanistan in 2001, just five weeks after September 11, saddled up on horses, and rode to an improbable victory against a vastly larger Taliban and Al Qaeda army. That they did this and achieved victory, and how they did it -- has remained a secret, until now.

While researching Horse Soldiers, I conducted over 100 interviews in the U.S. and in Afghanistan, and in Afghanistan I walked and studied key sites that appear in the book. I was able to capture not only the Americans' point of view but the Afghans' as well. I was drawn to the story's action and to the humanity of the people involved. I wanted to tell this story as if it were an epic unfolding around a kitchen table, a tale about survival and courage.

P-40 flying again

Roger Cain

Over the years, a number of Curtiss aircraft have called Sonoma Valley Airport home and now a new restoration has joined the lineup at the airport better known to the locals as the Schellville Antique Aerodrome, about a 45 minute drive north of San Francisco.

The newest plane to fly from there is a USAAC Curtiss P-40N-5 Warhawk,'s/n 42-105306. It's traceable back to log books when it was one of several planes flown by Ray Melikian flying with the 7th Fighter Squadron, 49th fighter Group. Melikian had three Japanese kills to his credit in P-40's during World War II.

The demise of this P-40 came when it was involved in an unfortunate accident with the much larger and beefier P-47 Thunderbolt at the Iron Range Repair Depot in Queensland, Australia. The plane continued to remain there stricken from service and stripped of useful parts throughout the many years that followed.

Sub Sets Record in Dive to Ocean's Deepest Trench

LiveScience Staff

A robotic vehicle named Nereus has made the deepest ocean dive ever - 6.8 miles (10,902 meters), a team of scientists and engineers reported yesterday. At this depth, Nereus was able to explore the Challenger Deep - the ocean's lowest point, located in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific.

Nereus took the plunge Sunday. It was the first exploration of the Marina Trench since 1998.

"Much of the ocean's depths remain unexplored," said Julie Morris, director of the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences, which funded the project. "Ocean scientists now have a unique tool to gather images, data and samples from everywhere in the oceans, rather than those parts shallower than 6,500 meters (4 miles). With its innovative technology, Nereus allows us to study and understand previously inaccessible ocean regions."

Nereus is a new type of ocean vehicle, called a hybrid remotely operated vehicle (HROV). It is controlled by scientists aboard a surface ship via a fiber-optic tether. In addition to being able to dive deep, Nereus can also switch to a free swimming mode.

Iraqis detain 5 US contractors in Baghdad

Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD – Five U.S. contractors have been detained in the investigation of the slaying of another American in Baghdad's Green Zone, officials said Sunday, in what may become the first case of U.S. citizens facing Iraqi justice under a security agreement that took effect this year.

U.S. and Iraqi officials said the five have not been charged in the death of Jim Kitterman, 60, a construction company owner from Houston, Tex., whose body was found May 22 in his car in the Green Zone. He had been blindfolded, bound and stabbed.

Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said the Americans were being held at an Iraqi police station inside the Green Zone "in connection with a joint U.S.-Iraqi investigation" into Kitterman's death but gave no further details.

The Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security recently hosted a teleconference for law enforcement agencies and associations such as the National Association of Chiefs of Police to discuss the Obama Administration's interest in using the military during "emergencies."

Fortunately, NewsWithViews.com had exclusive access to the discussion and the explanations by Homeland Security and Defense Departments officials.

Officials announced during the teleconference that the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator W. Craig Fugate met with the Commander, US Northern Command, General Gene Renuart, to discuss "pre-disaster planning, response and recovery in support of the federal response to the 2009 hurricane season as well as wild fires, floods and other potential disasters."

The meeting reinforced the important relationship between the two organizations and focused on the operational role of US Northern Command and what resources and skills they bring to any major Federal effort related to all-hazards preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. It was also an opportunity to meet operational leaders who would fill key positions in those support efforts.

Japan warns that North Korea may fire missile at U.S. on Independence Day

North Korea may launch a long-range ballistic missile towards Hawaii on American Independence Day, according to Japanese intelligence officials.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles, would be launched in early July from the Dongchang-ni site on the north-western coast of the secretive country.

Intelligence analysts do not believe the device would be capable of hitting Hawaii's main islands, which are 4,500 miles from North Korea.

Honoring General Petraeus & a Dr. Lambertsen
and also to remember D-Day Operation "Betty"

By Erick Simmel

In a world of audacious enterprise which surrounds the complexity of secret warfare all around us now, back on May 2nd, 2009 approximately one month prior to the 65th anniversary of the allied invasion of Nazi occupied fortress Europe, D-Day June 6th 1944, a elegant little gathering of 600 or so of the nations most revered retired and active secret warriors -- some of who were intimately part in that invasion -- took place in Washington D.C.

At the gathering two of Americas most stalwart military commanders Army general David H. Petraeus of Central Command and the success in Afghanistan and Admiral Eric T. Olsen Commander of U.S Special Operations Command the top Frog [man] and highest ranking Navy SEAL in charge of all Americas secret commando forces were on hand –one as an award presenter and one as a Award receiver.

The OSS Society is the organization of former World War II Office of Strategic Service (OSS) members who with General William ‘Wild Bill' Donovan's together though their actions, helped fight and gain INTEL to shorten that war. OSS Society continues Donovan's bold and dynamic leadership vision by insuring their exploits are not lost to time. As an award receiver Petraus was being honored and presented the OSS Society's William J. Donovan award as a current military commander exemplifying the Donovan Legacy.

To present General Petraeus the fabled William J. Donovan award was retired Army Major General and OSS veteran John K. ‘Jumping- Jack' Singlaub demonstrating extraordinary valor and unparalleled leadership during his 35-year Army career that included three wars.

As a young OSS Jedburgh officer on one of the most daring missions of World War II, Lieutenant Singlaub nearly made Sua Sponte ( In Ranger Parlance accomplishing a task with little or no prompting) his personal motto by parachuting behind the lines into Nazi occupied France to train, organize, and lead elements of the French resistance. Among only a handful of men to fight in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation, who then led Chinese guerrillas in penetration raids against Japanese Forces. Near war's end, he led a rescue mission that parachuted into a Japanese prisoner of war camp on Hainan Island, off the coast of China, liberating over 400 Allied Prisoners of War. During the Korean War, he was chosen as the central figure in developing the Ranger Training Command at Fort Benning, GA, followed by combat tours in Korea as Deputy Chief of the CIA mission and a Battalion Commander in the 3rd Infantry Division During the Vietnam War, he commanded the Joint Unconventional Warfare Task Force (MACSOG), one of the most storied units of that war, for over two years.

The William J. Donovan Award is named after the founder of the World War II Office of Strategic Services (OSS), Maj. Gen. William "Wild Bill" Donovan. OSS was the forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency and U.S. Special Operations Forces.

Donovan is the only American to have received our nation's four highest decorations, including the Medal of Honor.

Charles Pinck, OSS Society president, said, "In much the same manner that General Donovan created a revolutionary new organization capable of waging unconventional warfare with OSS, General Petraeus has revolutionized the Army's view of counterinsurgency by challenging conventional wisdom, by recruiting supremely talented and diverse people to help him, and by overcoming formidable internal and external obstacles to turn the tide in Iraq and, we hope, in Afghanistan."

In his introduction of Petraeus, Maj. Gen. Singlaub, himself a 2007 award recipient and OSS Society chairman said "The William J. Donovan Award is given to an individual who has rendered distinguished service in the interests of the democratic process, public service, courage in all its forms and the cause of freedom... General Petraeus' leadership of our nation's military in Iraq and Afghanistan has been nothing less than revolutionary and inspirational. He [General Petraeus] has, by the force of his formidable intellect, remarkable leadership abilities, adept political skills and courage, transformed the United States Army and its approach to counterinsurgency..."

Generals Singlaub, Petraeus and Admiral Olsen were in and of itself, an incredible bonding of three of our nations the past and present days, most dutiful officers all who lived the ideals and standards in the fighting of unconventional warfare which they all exemplify.

Though General Petraeus was the star of the evening, another humble unassuming and dynamic OSS veteran now in his 90's was also on hand for well deserved if albeit better late then never accolade form his OSS peers. His name is Christian J. Lambertsen, a name, if you're an American SCUBA diver especially an American frogman, – you should know of – better than Jacques Cousteau.

Lambertsen is a former World War II Major with the U.S. Army Medical Corps and current Medical Doctor in his early 90's was also at one time one of Americans most classified individuals as well as being known as "The Father of Combat Swimming."

Admiral Olsen was on deck to present an accolade too Lambertsen and let it be known that without Doctor Lambertsen as the coiner of the term SCUBA; inventor of the first American SCUBA rebreather and training officer to America's First Frogmen, the OSS Maritime(MU) Unit's Operational Swimmer Groups(OSG's), as those in today' SEAL Teams and Army Special Forces Combat Divers or any U.S. clandestine underwater personnel with the ability to conduct underwater combat swimming or combat diving operations may not have such can-do capacities, without Doctor Lambertsen . Without Lambertsen, OSS would have a less than very unique and dynamic maritime operational history. Olsen knows how all frogmen in the U.S. of A. owe their genesis and abilities to function underwater as commandos to Lambertsen and his fellow OSS Operational Swimmers and the pioneering tactics he and they developed. For it is Lambertsen, who developed the tool to make the manned tactics function in combat swimming at least ten years before the regular military saw an official need and use for as a unique element to clandestine warfare. Lambertsen dutifully developed the means to deploy a frogman undersea as a weapon of war, in the traditions and nature of General Donovan's, OSS vision.

As the honor bestowed on Lambertsen by the OSS Society was close to the 65th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, many in U.S, Special Forces do not realize that Lambertsen's innovative LARU ( Lambertsen Amphibious Respitory Unit) SCUBA and the Swimmers has a unique association with that operation. If you've studied Normandy one might inquire why was there not any frogmen operations in support of those historic landing to pave the wave for the invading allies to have otherwise prevented or diverted the enemies attention – to perhaps lessen the gauntlet of enemy fire?

Well there was. As part of Operation Overlord - the invasion of fortress Europe on the Normandy Coast – now commonly referred to as D-DAY, June 6th 1944 -   were amongst two small groups of very classified OSS amphibious commando operatives trained, to undertake the first mission of its kind, in the very cold waters off the English Channel. Their existence was so classified, that it was on par with the secrecy surrounding the atomic bomb ‘Manhattan' project. To understand why, one has to realize how different things were 70 years ago in regards to people enjoying the ocean as Scuba divers – there were none.

Historians will argue that the very very classified Italian, German, Japanese and British military circles revolved around watermen from those regions to perfect the operational systems deployed by their commandos. But their equipment and skills however successful and daring in execution were all really about luck –not design. They were more a band aid to affect a need, not a true tool for the need.

Enter Chris Lambertsen and the west coast ‘Beach Rat' Watermen Donovan would later find for him.

Back in 1939, Dr. Lambertsen, was then, a young pre medical student at Rutgers University known as ‘Chris' Lambertsen. He developing an underwater breathing apparatus designed for use as a life saving device or for military rescue operations. He and his equipment gained national attention due to publicity photos and press stories relating to him having spent 30 minutes underwater with out surface air supply( quite a feat in 1939), His university  professor impressed by this insights of Lambertsen, appealed to the British and U.S. Navy on his behalf.  After witness' from the then secret OSS ( and its British Counterpart ( SOE) watched Lambertsen gave a demonstration of the equipment to the U.S Navy. Witnessing this ‘Johnny Neutron' named Lambertsen and his SCUBA, OSS recruited Lambertsen and classified him and his apparatus with the intent of applying him and it to a classified unit Donovan and his associates were cooking up.

While finishing his med school degree at University of Pennsylvania, Lambertsen  would  secretly become part of to the OSS Maritime Unit(MU)  to advance and better develop his first version of the secret essential equipment to ensure the U.S.A.'s first clandestine maritime arms of OSS MU be truly amphibious underwater commandos. Donovan directed Lambertsen to -- ironically for this story --a secure Washington hotel pool meeting where a Navy Gunners mate and hard hat diver named John Spence had ‘volunteered' and unknown to Spence, was to be the first student Lambertsen would teach to use his LARU SCUBA. Spence in effect became and is known as "Americas First Frogman."

Spence and Lambertsen became part of a five man OSS MU cell known as the Special Operations Dive Unit (SODU). This group trained and recruited additional personnel mainly from a prewar association Donovan had with LT. Jack Taylor from Santa Monica California – a part time Dentist full time adventurer and part time master Waterman. According to Greg Heller of Surfline.com describes a Waterman as:

"Boasting total mastery of all oceanic endeavors, the revered waterman can fish, dive, surf, windsurf, kayak, bodysurf, interpret complex weather data, save the odd drowning man, etc. Generally built like a tank and typically soft-spoken (choosing to let his actions do the talking), loner watermen fear neither tempest nor shark and rarely head for higher ground. If need be, he can survive entirely on self-harvested ocean bounty, spearing his food from the nearby reefs he'll surf over when the swell is up. He's an intense figure, idolized in the local community for his silent bravery and meteorological prowess."

Taylor and his fellow Watermen whom Lambertsen would later train, fit that bill. They were breath-hold -free diver-Lifeguards of that region, who at that time had the only rubber fins and rubber face masks and developed techniques and tactics for hunting and spear fishing under the ocean on a regular basis. Many of the key men to complement Lambertsen were part of the U.S. Coast Guard. According to LCDR Micheal Bennett USCG a Coast Guard/OSS joint operations authority:

"...In forthcoming undersea warfare operations. One key piece of equipment was an underwater breathing apparatus invented by Dr. Christian Lambertsen.[xii] Although other self-contained diving equipment was under development, the Lambertsen Rebreathing Unit (LARU) was the first unassisted diving capability employed operationally by the United States. It allowed MU swimmers to stay under water at a depth to 50 feet for as long as 90 minutes, allowing time to swim almost a mile...In these maritime activities, Coast Guard men recruited for their swimming, diving, boat-handling, and signaling skills were at the heart of the OSS Maritime Unit (MU) and Operational Swimmer Group (OSG) operations. After they were organized and trained, these men were deployed with the OSS MU to Europe and the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theater of Operations and to the Navy's Underwater Demolition Team 10 in the Pacific."

All the Watermen associated with Taylor, irregardless of their initial service would be sequestered from the various military services they had joined following the December 7th 1941 attack at Pearl Harbor into OSS MU, with their talents in tow.

Along with Taylor and Spence these men and their commanders would be known as Operational Swimmer Group I or the "L-Unit" to be trained by Lambertsen and combine their skills with his apparatus for a truly first combat swimming operation for a very integral and classified addendum to the up coming Invasion at Normandy.

Tom Hawkins a retired Navy SEAL Commander, former President of UDT/SEAL Association and brillant historian on this topic has noted "The Lambertsen Unit was subsequently adopted by OSS, and on 18 February 1943, General Donovan approved plans for the first underwater swimming group. The group was to be called "L-Unit," and consisted of two smaller groups. Lieutenant Taylor would command one of these groups and Lieutenant R.J.H. Duncan, USNR the other. During training with Dr. Chris Lambertsen, [ many of these operatives including...] Lieutenant Jack Taylor swam underwater for over a mile and stayed down for a period extending more than 48 minutes.) This was an extraordinary accomplishment at the time, since self-contained breathing underwater was a new concept, and combining the capability with military tactical application had only been previously attempted (with great success) by the Italians and later the British (also with great success). The men were being specifically trained in the U.S. and later in England to launch attacks against German submarine pens on the South coast of France. Before L-Unit was operationally deployed, the Maritime Unit had attained branch status..."

However, Lambertsen did train the rest of "L-Unit" who did deploy to England to prepare for its first mission. Spence and other operatives made several recon sorties into France to meet and connect with French Resistance and survey the icy waters and coastline they would be later penetrating. This was to be one of OSS' most audacious undertakings:

The mission name? Operation Betty

Mission classification? Above Secret – They were America's first frogmen and they would be conducting their mission within hours prior to the D Day lanndings.

The Mission Tasking? Four OSS operational swimmer operatives "X, Y, Z and Q" create a spectacular operation of disabling the massive reinforced concrete Nazi U-Boat pens four days prior to d D-Day in diversionary raid on the Bay of Biscay French Coastal port of Lorient-Keroman to reduce the striking power of the German subs against the invasion fleet. Deploying by PT boat to one mile off shore; two, two man teams of swimmers would disembark the boat and submerge into the water infiltrating from underwater form 1 mile off shore wearing LARU SCUBA. They would each put explosives on the big iron gates that swung open when a sub would enter the pens. The other swimmer would plant a limpet mine on the sub waiting to enter. The explosives would go off at the same time sinking the sub and blowing locks. The operatives would evade to their escape house and then escape behind the lines to link up with advancing forces landing at Normandy.

The Operational Swimmers Readiness? Excellent and calculatingly reckless; confident –yet cautious due to their training in the frigid English Channel with their new secret weapon the LARU SCUBA –the cold water leaking dry suits and poor rubber products limited their water immersion time but they were confident in training to have pulled the job off

Missions results? Scrubed.  Only hours before D-DAY -  due to both a leadership deficiency with L Unit and the invasion needing boats – the frogmen's PT boats slated for their insertion for the operation.

The real SCUBA rebreather? Lambertsen-Amphibious Respirator- Unit (LARU) SCUBA

According to then OSS operative Agent X, now former all pro receiver and kicker for the San Francisco 49ers football team, the 80 something , Gordon Soltau, suicidal as the mission seems to the reader, he and his fellow operatives believed it would have worked and the operatives would have made it overland to their rescue element. America's First Frogman, then Navy Gunners mate and OSS Operative John Spence, also part of the mission and the first frogman to dive Lambertsen's LARU, made several pre-mission recons into France to survey the target and connect with the underground for the L-Units Operatives escape routes. Spence, now 91, also believed the mission would not have failed due to their abilities.

Eisenhower and Admiral Ernest King thought differently and at the 11t hour overrode Donovan's operation canceling it .They wanted their force to have the best element of surprise and felt if something would have gone wrong.

After the L Unit's Mission was aborted Lambertsen illustrated the LARU wearing frogman as a weapon of war on the successful training operation at Guantanmo Bay Cuba to show frogmen penetrating naval harbor defenses and proved to the naval hierarchy that greater steps need be taken to prevent against swimmer attack or breech. Lambertsen first coined the term SCUBA (Oxford, 1940) for any life support system worn by an un-tethered diver-swimmer underwater to breathe from.  Yet, he is first to recognize the many different underwater breathing apparatus' which are considered SCUBA's, before and after his LARU (A testimony to the man and his humble character.)

He was vital in establishing the first cadres of U.S. military operational combat swimmers during late World War II. His responsibilities included training and developing methods of combining self-contained diving and swimmer delivery for the OSS "Operational Swimmer Group" Lambertsen even deployed close to the action  in the less memorable ( to historians) China-Burma-India theater of the war as the OSG  training officer and was decorated for his OSS wartime service.

By conducting advance recon missions to the French coastline prior to D-DAY, to behind the lines operations in Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria, Cuba, Pacific Islands, and the Burma coastline. The men and operations using or contemplating any underwater swimmer operation could only do so due to the innovations and mindset of Lambertsen and his LARU apparatus. He and those using it thought way out of the box and paved the way for today's Navy SEALS and all the underwater operations any of our allies undertake today.

Following World War II, Lambertsen's hand touched every aspect of military and commercial diving. He trained U.S. forces in methods for submerged operations, including composite fleet submarine -operational swimmers activity which today's Navy SEALs Army and Marine Special Forces refer to as Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) operations.  Then as a environmental and diving medical specialist,  Lambertsen continued in clandestine government/military SCUBA upgrades of his LARU  as well a was involved in all physiological breathing applications for  all human explorations in both inner and outer space.

As a result of his pioneering work with the Office of Strategic Services and U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Teams throughout the 1940's and 1950's, Dr. Lambertsen is recognized by the Army Special Forces, Marine Special Forces and  Naval Special Warfare community as "The Father of U.S. Combat Swimming." Dr. Lambertsen's active contributions to diving during WWII and became even more progressive in the post-war period through the evolutions of the U.S. Navy Deep Submergence and Naval Special Warfare developmental programs.  Into his late 80's Lambertsen served on the U.S. Special Operations Command Medical Advisory Panel (MAP) for the Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS) developing the newest phase of Navy SEAL submersible operations. (And if you know anything about serving with clandestine services... he still acts in such a role)

Lambertsen continues the University of Pennsylvania roles of Founding Director of the Institute For Environmental Medicine (IFEM) and the Environmental Biomedical Stress Data Center (EBSDC) and Professor of Environmental Medicine which he still serves as to this day. His resume and list of National Service and Medical accomplishments reads like the a non-fictional American "Q" (The master technology officer of the fictional world of 007)

For more on Lambertsen Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_J._Lambertsen.

Lamberstsen's tribute was a special and wonderful accolade adjacent to a ceremony being bestowed upon that same evening of May 2nd. In attendance was former Captain Walter Mess, AUS and OSS MU flotilla Captain now in his mid 90's who transported Lambertsen's Swimmers and Lambertsen himself on operations in Burma 64 years ago. They have not seen each other much since then. But Lambertsen reached out a firm hand shake and with a smile said, "I know you! You used to deliver my swimmers!" Mess with smile and replied "Yes sir!"

Paying tribute to Gen. "Wild Bill" Donovan and the "Pioneers of our nation's intelligence community" who think "outside the box," General Petraeus said, "America's intelligence professionals and special operators, like their OSS forbears, provide exceptional strategic and tactical intelligence, and conduct demanding special operations... Their goal is to ensure that our troopers are never engaged in a fair fight... [The] most powerful tool our troopers carry into battle is not his weapon, but his mind - and that is particularly true of those who today carry on the traditions of the OSS in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan."

Lambertsen with awards and honors beyond anything most of us might ever know, --  like his joint service Army, Navy's Marine  and Coast Guard OSS Swimmer vets  -- had previously been awarded an Special Forces Green beret  and a  Navy SEAL Trident  and is a life time honorary SEAL  and Special Forces Association member (  SF combat divers  and SEALs  both direct lineage to OSS operational swimmers... and Lambertsen). Although knowing Doctor Lambertsen, the tribute and accolade by his OSS peers that May 2nd night was perhaps one of his most heartfelt honors. Because it came from his surviving peers and was bestowed upon him with full honors by our nations highest ranking serving SEAL Officer as if saying a hearty thank you from the most identifiable legacy to which Lambertsen's work in no small way helped create Americans SEAL and Combat diver /Swimmer legacy which continues to this day. .

General Petraeus also noted that evening, how today's intelligence operations professionals are constantly developing new ways of collecting, analyzing, sharing, and fusing intelligence - as well as ‘new ways of conducting demanding special operations missions.'

Thus Dr. Lambertsen who since WW II, is still called upon, in both a classified military and or civilian capacity as the individual who provides a platform and the research for the American warrior to survive un-tethered, underwater in DoD organized clandestine maritime operations or in any environment to include inner or outer space where a human needs to survive by breathing compressed regular or exotic gasses.

As Bennett sums it all up: " Lambertsen was more than an inventor. He was also the mentor and trainer for OSS Maritime Unit personnel. In the year 2000, Dr. Lambertsen was designated as the Father of US Combat Swimming by the Navy's UDT/SEAL community. His life's work has included significant contributions to the US Coast Guard Air/Sea Rescue Program, Navy SEALs, the US Army, and NASA. He is the creator of most of the technology used for Combat Swimming Operations in the United States today.

Thus Lambertsen fits right into General Petraeus' analogy, of continuing to explore new ways of conducting demanding special operations missions now, as he has done over the past 70 years.

Hoo-yahs!  Hoo-ahs! And Hoo-rahs!  Doctor Lambertsen

Admiral Olsen and General Petraeus

Obama says D-Day saved world from evil

By Ross Colvin and David Alexander

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama paid homage to the heroes of D-Day on Saturday, saying their assault on Normandy's beaches exactly 65 years ago had helped save the world from evil and tyranny.

Addressing stooped, white-haired veterans, Obama said the Second World War represented a special moment in history when nations fought together to battle a murderous ideology.

"We live in a world of competing beliefs and claims about what is true," Obama said. "In such a world, it is rare for a struggle to emerge that speaks to something universal about humanity. The Second World War did that."
