Daniel Boone and the Military Sniper
In the Company of American Legends – Daniel Boone

... and fellow frontiersman, plainsmen, mountain men, Injin' fighters', Scouts, irregulars and other early American co-patriots, their skills and mindset and their foreshadowing of the Modern American Military Sniper

... Boone lived hunting up to ninety; and, what's still stranger, left behind a name for which men vainly decimate the throng. Not only; famous, but of that GOOD fame, without which glory's but a tavern song, - Simple, serene, the antipodes of shame,
Which hate nor envy e'er could tinge with wrong.
Serene, not sullen, were the solitudes of this unsighing people of the woods.

  - Byron.

The American Sniper. It is the US of A's, near uniquely patterned, time honored, handed down and hand crafted, a highly effective military weapon which in and of itself has in the past 200 odd years, evolved from a revolutionary warfare application to also become a true American martial art form in implementing limited warfare across the world. It stems from a time-honored tradition American riflemanship...of mythic proportion. In addition to marksmanship, military snipers are also trained in camouflage, infiltration, reconnaissance, field craft and observation techniques. The American Sniper is now a amalgamation of several groups every pilgrim being armed with a musket and/or pistol in great defense of the colonies to frontiersman mountain men scouts and plainsman to evolve so effectively, that our snipers are recognized as perhaps the most effective in the world. But how did this collective capability for the individual spawn in our nation and evolve from those who had practiced it before us?

To answer this we must look directly to one of our greatest American legends and real life patriots, those legendary 18th and 19th century individuals whose ability to make war, hunt, explore, live off the land and sea as privateers had exploits into freedom which indirectly planted the seed for the future of effective long and close range marksmanship in warfare. Today's modern U.S. Army, Marine, Navy and Air Force Snipers -- are the modern legacy and descendents of our greatest fictional and real Frontiersman – from the fictional Hawkeye in James Fenimore Cooper's "the Last of the Mohicans" to real life Indian fighters frontiersman, Scouts, trackers and marksmen like, Simon Kenton, Lindsey Applegate, Davy Crockett, Kit Carson and one very mythical:

"Tis true he shrank from men, even of his nation; when they build up unto his darling trees. He moved some hundred miles off, for a station where there were fewer houses and more ease."

Daniel Boone will always occupy a unique place in our history as the archetype of the hunter and wilderness wanderer. The American Sniper has a place and comes from a mindset much like individuals like mentioned above and Daniel Boone. Daniel Boone was perhaps the longest term individual to apply his skills se on a day-to-day basis more than any American to precede him or follow. For at least 60 years after his death.

Boone was a true pioneer, and stood at the head of that class of Indian—fighters, game-hunters, forest-fellers, and backwoods farmers who, generation after generation pushed westward the border of civilization from the Alleghenies to the Pacific. As he himself said, he was "an instrument ordained of God to settle the wilderness." Born in Pennsylvania, he drifted south into western North Carolina, and settled on what was then the extreme frontier. There he married, built a log cabin, and hunted, chopped trees, and tilled the ground like any other frontiersman.

"The freeborn forest found and kept them free. And fresh as is a torrent or a tree.

And tall, and strong, and swift of foot were they, Beyond the dwarfing city's pale abortions. Because their thoughts had never been the prey of care or gain; the green woods were their portions."

Kind of like today's Sniper. Modern U.S. Military Snipers are often from areas in the states where hunting and marksmanship are key components to survival in an every day squared away slice of America that is comfortable and born living off grid – but able to adapt to it. They often come to the military with a good background in field craft, as Boone had .Yet like Boone the best of them are not mere shooters but adaptable to any urban jungle or natural environment which needs their skills of war.

But what is the mentality of the sniper and how is that legacy likened to Daniel Boone and frontiersmen like him?

"Often media battlefield reports small groups or even individuals as snipers as do frontline grunts that are exposed to sporadic rifle fire which source cannot be exactly pinpointed. More often than not stragglers, recon patrols or lone die-hards are cause of such sniping rather than elite snipers. It demonstrates that any individual can emulate snipers by hiding and taking aimed shots at distance, but elite snipers should be separated from this type of sniping."

Saving the niceties and concealing military terminology, sniper's job is to eliminate, to kill enemy combatants, with extreme precision and without remorse.

The mentality of properly trained sniper is not your average Joe or even average infantry man, rather, if one would try to list required mental characteristics of sniper it certainly should include nerves of steel, endless patience, intelligence mixed with calm ruthlessness that stays moulds into emotional balance. Mental characteristics and condition have immense part in selecting sniper in the first place.

His marksmanship and observation ability needs to be extremely high and for this unrivalled eyesight is important element. However, those qualities need to be supplemented with right mentality in order to successfully utilize them in sniper missions. Snipers are often associated with their obvious marksmanship skills, but competent sniper is mix of many qualities that allow him or her to do the job.

What makes sniper unique in pure warfare terms is they are a weapon available to nearly any force and with relatively minimal cost. When a hunter hunts, if he does not take down his prey it can, and used to be, and surely will again in the future mean he may go with out eating. Like wise when the modern military Sniper interdicts a high value target and fails to eliminate it, it can and most very well likely result in the troops the sniper is protecting or operating on the behalf of might result in more casualties or perhaps defeat.

"There is aura of controversy with snipers that stems from their ability appear, hide and evade undetected while taking out individual combatants with lethal precision. As part of the snipers training and primary mission sniper identifies individuals that are most valuable for the enemy. These are officers, messengers, communications operators, heavy weapon and vehicle crews and his counterparts in enemy side (logically in actual situation they would be quickly short listed in snipers mind from most dangerous to down, i.e. starting from enemy sniper with riflemen being the last). In certain circumstances there is nothing that the enemy can do about the sniper since he is unseen at great distance. At best they can call in artillery and heavy weapons fire to the suspected location (as proper snipers are rare in lower echelons counter sniper is most likely unavailable with short notice). Enemy snipers are often hated and feared by the regular infantry who have to deal with them in difficult battlefield situations. Snipers therefore have always carried"high prize value" even to extend where bounties have placed on heads of known enemy snipers. It can be argued that because of the sudden, concealed and personal nature of the elimination sniper's closest term is assassin although in battlefield there is no such definition. But it can go long way to explain aura of sniper in short. Military lawyers have described sniper as"legal battlefield weapon system".

Snipers need minimal support and maintenance to operate unlike many modern high-tech weaponry. What is more snipers are not limited only to elimination of enemy combatants, but perform variety of missions. Daniel Boone was the guy who pioneered that style of warfare

Daniel Boone, although not a sniper as we call them to today was one of the few pioneers who laid the groundwork for the modern "Legal battlefield weapon system". Who happens to be an American and a sniper to exist in today's combat environment? Boone and his frontiersman cohorts fought Indian wars and across the frontier though out the late 18th and early 19th century from the Appalachian's to the Oregon frontier. From the Canadian wilderness to the Louisiana bayous and Seminole country of Florida where they learned to live off the land and survive in a variety of missions, Stalk conceal them selves, coexist with the enemy and eliminate high value targets like few ever had or will –Boone's actions, which continue were much like the modern sniper might undertake.

"The Dark and Bloody Ground"

For Indian fighters like Daniel Boone, the Alleghany Mountains still marked a boundary, beyond which the settlers dared not go; for west of them lay immense reaches of frowning forest, uninhabited save by bands of warlike Indians. (Much like today's Pakistani tribal area of Wurzistan or the Taliban controlled areas of Afghanistan is to the modern sniper or operator hunting and seeking out Osama-Bin-Laden and other enemy combatants.

Occasionally some venturesome hunter or trapper penetrated this immense wilderness, and returned with strange stories of what he had seen and done.

In 1769 Boone excited by these vague and wondrous tales, determined himself to cross the mountains and find out what manner of land it was that lay beyond. With a few chosen companions he set out, making his own trail through the gloomy forest. After weeks of wandering, he at last emerged into the beautiful and fertile country of Kentucky, for which, in after years, the red men and the white strove with such obstinate fury that it grew to be called "the dark and bloody ground." But when Boone first saw it, it was a fair and smiling land of groves and glades and running waters, where the open forest grew tall and beautiful, and where innumerable herds of game grazed, roaming ceaselessly to and fro along the trails they had trodden during countless generations. Kentucky was not owned by any Indian tribe, and was visited only by wandering war—parties and hunting—parties who came from among the savage nations living north of the Ohio or south of the Tennessee.

A roving war—party stumbled upon one of Boone's companions and killed him, and the others then left Boone and journeyed home; but his brother came out to join him, and the two spent the winter together. Self-reliant, fearless and the frowning defiles of Cumberland Gap, they were attacked by Indians, and driven back—two of Boones own sons being slain. In 1775, however he made another attempt and this attempt was successful. The Indian attacked the newcomers; but by this time the parties of would-be settlers were sufficiently numerous to hold their own. They beat back the Indian, and built rough little hamlets, surrounded by log stockades, at Boonsborough and Harrodsburg; and the permanent settlement of Kentucky had begun.

The next few years were passed by Boone amid unending Indian conflicts. He was a leader among the settlers, both in peace and in war. At one time he represented them in the House of Burgesses of Virginia; at another time he was a member of the first little Kentucky parliament itself; and he became a colonel of the frontier militia. He tilled the land, and he chopped the trees himself; he helped to build the cabins and stockades with his own hands, wielding the long handled, light-headed frontier ax as skillfully as other frontiersmen.

His main business was that of surveyor, for his knowledge of the country, and his ability to travel through it, in spite of the danger from Indians, created much demand for his services among people who wished to lay off tracts of wild land for their own future use. But whatever he did, and wherever he went, he had to be sleeplessly on the lookout for the Indian foes. When he and his fellows tilled the stump-dotted fields of corn, one or more of the party were always on guard, with weapon at the ready, for fear of lurking savages. When he went to the House of Burgesses he carried his long rifle, and traversed roads not a mile of which was free from danger of Indian attack.

The settlements in the early years depended exclusively upon game for their meat, and Boone was the mightiest of all the hunters, so that upon him devolved the task of keeping his people supplied. He killed many buffaloes, and pickled the buffalo beef for use in winter. He killed great numbers of black bear, and made bacon of them, precisely as if they had been hogs. The common games were deer and elk. At that time none of the hunters of Kentucky would waste a shot on anything so small as a prairie chicken or wild duck, but they sometimes killed geese and swans when they came south in winter and lit on the rivers.

But whenever Boone went into the woods after game, he had perpetually to keep watch lest he himself might be hunted in turn. He never lay in wait at a game-lick, save with ears strained to hear the approach of some crawling red foe. He never crept up to a turkey he heard calling, without exercising the utmost care to see that it was not an Indian; for one of the favorite devices of the Indians was imitate the turkey call, and thus allure within range some inexperienced hunter. (Many of these techniques have since been handed down and applied to every good sniper in the U.S. armed forces inventory.)

Boone Skirmisher Extreme!

The term 'sniper' was not in widespread use in the United States until after the American Civil War. But in the 1700's and 1800's, the common term used in the United States was ‘skirmisher.' Throughout history armies have used skirmishers to break up enemy formations and to thwart the enemy from flanking the main body of their attack force. They were deployed individually on the extremes of the moving army primarily to scout for the possibility of an enemy ambush. Consequently, a "skirmish" denotes a clash of small scope between these forces. In general, a skirmish was a limited combat, involving troops other than those of the main body.

A skirmish was something the American Indian forced onto the early white American settlers and soldiers those of who with mental toughness and foresight saw its usage to apply it repackage it, and elevate it into an martial art form and use back at the Indian and British soldiers. Boone was one of the best. Others included Indian fighters scouts and mountain men like Lindsey Applegate, Simon Kenton, Kit Carson, Jim Bowie Marine Lt. Archibald Gillespie and James Bridger. Or small irregular colonial troops like Butler's, Kings, Queens, Adam's, Rogers; Knowltons, Loudries, McNeils, Oregon, Terry's Texans, and Whitcombs "Rangers" and Francis "the Swamp fox" Maroin' s Irregular's who all knew what fighting both Indians and British Regulars with quick surprise attacks and equally quick withdrawals against large British casualties from the field.

Besides this warfare, which went on in the midst of his usual vocations, Boone frequently took the field on set expeditions against the savages. Once when he and a party of other men were making salt at a lick, they were surprised and carried off by the Indians. The old hunter was a prisoner with them for some months, but finally made his escape and came home through the trackless woods as straight as the wild pigeon flies. He was ever on the watch to ward off the Indian inroads, and to follow the war parties, and try to rescue the prisoners. On another occasion, when Boone had gone to visit a salt lick with his brother, the Indians ambushed them and shot the latter. Boone himself escaped, but the Indians followed his for three miles by the aid of a tracking dog, until Boone turned, shot the dog and then eluded his pursuers.

In company with Simon Kenton and many other noted hunters and wilderness warriors, he once and again took part in expeditions into the Indian country, where they killed the braves and drove off the horses.

Boone during the American Revolution

During the American war for independence, as violence broke out in Kentucky. By 1777, Henry Hamilton, a British Lieutenant Governor of Canada, began to recruit American Indian war parties to raid the Kentucky settlements. Twice bands of Indian accompanied by French, Tory, and British partisans from Detroit, bearing the flag of Great Britain, attacked Boonesborough. In each case Boone and his fellow settlers using skirmishers tactics beat them off with loss. Native Americans who were unhappy about the loss of Kentucky in treaties saw the war as a chance to drive out the colonists. Isolated settlers and hunters became the frequent target of attacks, convincing many to abandon Kentucky. Boone became neck deep in the conflict and his timely notable actions would start to brew into the legendary and emulative by crops of American warriors for centuries to come.

Boone during the war

Once, his own daughter, and two other girls who were with her, was carried off by a band of Shawnee Indians. Boone raised some friends and followed the trail steadily for two days and a night; then they came to where the Indians had killed a buffalo calf and were camped around it. Firing from a little distance, Boone and his men shot two of the Indians, and, rushing in, rescued the girls. The incident became the most celebrated event of Boone's life. Author James Fenimore Cooper fictionalized aversion of this episode in his classic book ‘The Last of the Mohicans' in 1826

  • During a Shawnee raid led by Chief Blackfish attacked Boonesborough. A bullet struck Boone's ankle, smashing the bone, but he was carried back inside the fort amid a flurry of bullets by legendary Frontiersman Simon Kenton who had been at Boonesborough only a short time and would soon become close friend, as well.
  • On a salt making expedition party to the salt springs of the Licking River, Boone was hunting meat for the expedition; he was surprised and captured by warriors led by Blackfish. Because Boone's party was greatly outnumbered, he convinced his men to surrender rather than put up a fight. Blackfish wanted to continue to Boones borough and capture it, since it was now poorly defended, but Boone convinced him that the women and children were not hardy enough to survive a winter trek. Instead, Boone promised that Boones borough would surrender willingly to the Shawnees the following spring. Boone did not have an opportunity to tell his men that he was bluffing in order to prevent an immediate attack on Boone's borough, however. Boone pursued this strategy so convincingly that many of his men concluded that he had switched his loyalty to the British.
  • As captives, Boone and his men were taken to Blackfish's town of Chillicothe where they were made to run the gauntlet of Indian warrior custom. Some of the Shawnees adopted some of the prisoners into the tribe to replace fallen warriors; the remainder was taken to Hamilton in Detroit. Boone was adopted into a Shawnee family at Chillicothe and given the name Sheltowee ("Big Turtle"). 6 months later when Boone learned that Blackfish was about to return to Boones borough with a large force, Boone eluded his captors and raced home, covering the 160 miles to Boones borough in five days on horseback and, after his horse gave out, on foot.
  • Boone responded counter ambushing Blackfish by leading a preemptive raid against the Shawnees across the Ohio River, and then by helping to successfully defend Boones borough against a ten day siege led by Blackfish, which began on September 7, 1778.
  • When Kentucky was divided into three Virginia counties in November 1780, Boone was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Fayette County militia.
  • As the War continued. Boone joined General Gerorge Rogers Clark's invasion of the Ohio country in 1780, fighting in the Battle of Piqua on August 7.
  • In 1781, Boone traveled to Richmond to take his seat in the legislature, but British dragoons under Col. Banastre Tarleton captured Boone and several other legislators near Charlottesville. The British released Boone on parole several days later.
  • During Boone's term, Cornwallis Surrender at Yorktown in October 1781, but the fighting continued in Kentucky unabated.
  • Boone returned to Kentucky and in August 1782 fought in the Battle of the Blue Licks in which his son Israel was killed. At the fatal battle of the Blue Licks, in which two hundred of the best riflemen of Kentucky were beaten with terrible slaughter by a great force of Indians from the lakes, Boone commanded the left wing. Leading his men, rifle in hand, he pushed back and overthrew the force against him; but meanwhile the Indians destroyed the right wing and center, and got round in his rear, so that there was nothing left for Boone's men except to flee with all possible speed.
  • In November 1782, Boone took part in another Clark expedition into Ohio, the last major campaign of the war.

All pretty impressive feats for one man shooting and moving and out foxing his Indian enemies!

Post War Boone and his Frontiersman's Mindset

Following the war for independence, Boone grew restless and ill at ease. He loved the wilderness; he loved the great forests and the great prairie like glades, and the life in the little lonely cabin, where from the door he could see the deer come out into clearing at nightfall. The neighborhood of his own kind made him feel cramped and ill at ease. So he moved ever westward with the frontier, and as Kentucky filled up he crossed the Mississippi and settled on the borders of the prairie country of Missouri, where the Spaniards, who ruled the territory, made him an "accolade," or judge. He lived to a great age, and died out on the border, a backwoods hunter to the last.

"Simple they were, not savage; and their rifles, though very true, were yet not used for trifles."

From all accounts available, Boone was expert rifleman with a Kentucky rifle which capable at a range of 300 yards and deadly accurate at 100 yards. In his hands, much likes the hands of a frontiersman, mountain men and plainsmen, sharpshooters and marksmen and today's modern riflemen who followed him. But it was the Boone's and other stereotypical frontiersmen and mountain men who were those who set the stage with this skill set.

They have often been depicted as dressed in Buckskin and a coonskin sporting bushy facial hair and carrying a Kentucky or Hawken or Sharps Rifle and Bowie Knife commonly referred to as a "scalpin' knife." . Boone and is fellow frontiersman- mountain men –plainsmen, were also mostly honorable men with their own chivalrous code, loners who would help those in need but who had found their home in the wild. Although some were gruff, while others were well mannered, some remained in the wilderness for life while others retired as businessmen in eastern communities or established themselves as farmers in the west.

After Boone These skills were passed down through generations of U.S. Riflemen in all country areas from father to son as we were, are, and always will be a nation of citizen soldiers, skilled in arms, just as much as the military passed it down to recruits. Up through World War I and through World War II a "sharpshooter, " generally noted an expert shot that was also an expert in field craft before ever wearing a uniform. Sergeant Alvin C. York during World War I is one of the first modern examples of this. York came into Army as a Hard drinking yet God fearing backwoodsman and hillbilly who hunted for survival and whose mindset was way in tune that when had to take charge and lead after his chain of command was cut down, York had no problem leading an attack on a German machinegun nest, taking 32 machine guns killing 28 German soldiers and capturing 132 others and being awarded the MOH for it.

"A sniper has special abilities, training, and equipment. His job is to deliver discriminatory, highly accurate rifle fire against enemy targets which, because of range, size, location, fleeting nature, or visibility, cannot be engaged successfully by the rifleman. Sniping requires the development of basic infantry skills to a high degree of perfection. A sniper's training incorporates a wide variety of subjects designated to increase his value as force multiplier and ensure his survival on the battlefield. The art of sniping requires learning and repetitiously practicing these skills until mastered. A sniper must be highly trained in long-range rifle marksmanship and field craft skills to ensure maximum probability of effective engagements and minimum risk of detection. Perfection must be reached before sniper takes part in combat operations."

  — Sniper Training and Employment TC-23-14 June 1989, US Army

Though the first official sniper school in the U.S. of A. was not developed until 1954, Up until York's time, the competent American sharpshooter in the Army, Marines or Naval Infantry was not taught to utilize the frontiersmen's field-craft skills into his curriculum and adapt and live off the land unless he came into the service with those skills to share in a adhoc basis to his peers. Some noted early American Snipers to have indirectly continued Boones legacy are:

Timothy Murphy War for Independence – killed British General Simon Fraser during the pivotal Battle of Saratoga, hampering the British advance and causing them to lose the battle.

Patrick Fergusson War For Independence – developer of the world's first breech-loaded military rifle (which advanced sniping and sharpshooting tactics), fought with his Corps of Riflemen (recruited from the 6th and 14th Foot) at the Battle of Brandywine, where he may have passed up a chance to shoot George Washington.

Colonel Hiram Berdan (U.S. Civil War) – commanded 1st and 2nd US Sharpshooters, who were trained and equipped Union marksmen with the .52 caliber Sharps Rifle. It has been claimed that Berdan's units killed more enemies than any other in the Union Army.

Sgt. Grace (Confederate American Civil War) – sniped Major General John Sedgwick at the then incredible distance of 730 m (800 yd) during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, with a British Whitworth target rifle causing administrative delays in the Union's attack, leading to Confederate victory. Sedgwick ignored advice to take cover, his last words according to urban legend being, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-" upon which he was shot. (In reality, he was shot a few minutes later.) An unspecified number of Whitworth rifles found their way to the Confederacy in the Civil War where they were called "Whitworth Sharpshooters ".

Major Fredrick Russell Burnham – assassinated Mlimo, the Ndebele religious leader, in his cave in Matobo Hills, Rhodesia, effectively ending the Second Matabele War of 1896. Burnham from the U.S.A. started as a Cowboy and Indian tracker in the American Old West but he left the United States to scout in Africa and went on to command the British Army Scouts in the Second Boer War in South Africa fighting alongside Winston Churchill. For his ability to track, even at night, the Africans dubbed him, He-who-sees-in-the-dark, but in the press he became more widely known as England's American Scout. Burnham's most accomplished soldiers during the Second Boer War were Lovatt Scouts a Scottish Highland regiment, whom he described as "half wolf and half jackrabbit." These scouts were well practiced in the arts of marksmanship, field craft and tactics. After the war, this regiment went on to become the British army's first sniper unit (later made famous during D-Day invasion at Normandy of 1944).

Like the aforementioned first crop of Boone followers, what makes a modern sniper unique in pure warfare terms is that the sniper is a weapon available to nearly any force and with relatively minimal cost yet high value. This was first illustrated by the actions of Burnham in South Africa as mentioned above. Snipers need minimal support and maintenance to operate unlike many modern high-tech weaponry. Likewise for his day Boone and his fellow Frontiersman like him were a cost effective tool for expanding the American frontier... or putting it bluntly, Boone and frontiersman like Kenton or scouts like Burnham were to use every available means to their advantage and their expertise in living off the land to hunt and kill the enemy – "without remorse," whether their precision technology was a Kentucky Rifle or a Remington Model 1875 No. 3 Army rifle in .44WCF.

"You get to the point where you start living like an animal" "You act like an animal, you work like an animal, you are an animal. All you think about is killing."

  — Chuck Mawhinney, USMC sniper in Vietnam War, 103 confirmed kills

To the fair reader amongst us only a warrior living in a similar environment can comprehend the mindset of the above quote. Saving the niceties and concealing military terminology, the modern sniper's job is to: "eliminate, to kill enemy combatants, with extreme precision and without remorse or reservation." It is well known the sniper is the predator of the battlefield. Boone was as was Berdane and Burnham tp follow him

Like Boone and mentioned American originals, the modern U.S. sniper's skills and mindset, hail from a place of being ever adapting ever cost effective, on the techno cutting edge and a quick answer to stop bloodshed. If you are currently a U.S. sniper or working towards becoming one you are not a robot, but a thinking weapon. Never mistake that, for a "hubris" you might live to regret (a term used in modern English to indicate overweening pride, superciliousness, or arrogance, often resulting in fatal retribution.) may find away turn the tables on you. YOU have to be ever quick through and effective in placing your shot or doing your mission and like Boone and his era of men, always cover your tracks! But this mindset you already have! Perhaps whether you're a spear-fisherman form a coastal region of our country or a moose hunter from Alaska, to get the prey you become one with the prey. In military sniping technology tools and bureaucratic details aside, you are able to do this because like Boone your driven and unstoppable and uniquely a U.S. Citizen warrior!

"Always be sure you are right, then go ahead"

  — Davy Crockett

We should all remember where the sniper' mindset comes from and the moral fortitude and code he continues which has been passed down to him from Daniel Boone though others over the years through others like him all lived by to hone the skills handed down through time to him for him to defend a grateful nation's liberty. This will always keep you, the modern U.S. military sniper thinking. Thinking about how you can best be effective to your target. Remember you are no different than any great hunter or marksmen of our past.

Keep honing your skills!

Stay on target!

And I encourage you fathers to take the time to teach your children how to shoot, hunt, fish and field craft to give them a foundation and an edge for the future. One never knows what life may bring and teaching these skills could make the difference in any given situation.

And remember Boones own words:

"I can't say as ever I was lost, but I was bewildered once for three days."

  — Daniel Boone

(...As well as the great T.V. song about Boone's legend which goes like this:)

"Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
With an eye like an eagle
and as tall as a mountain was he!

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
He was brave; he was fearless
and as tough as a mighty oak tree!

From the coonskin cap on the top of ol' Dan
To the heel of his rawhide shoe;
the rippin'est, roarin'est, fightin'est man
the frontier ever knew!

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
And he fought for America
To make all Americans free!

What a Boone! What a doer!
What a dream come-er-true-er was he!

Daniel Boone was a man!
Yes, a big man!
With a whoop and a holler
he c'd mow down a forest of trees!

Daniel Boone was a man!
Yes, a big man!
If he frowned at a river
In July all the water would freeze!

But a peaceable, pioneer fella was Dan
when he smiled all the ice would thaw!
The singin'est, laughin'est, and happiest man
the frontier ever saw!

Daniel Boone was a man!
Yes, a big man!
With a dream of a country that'd
always forever be free!

What a Boone! What a do-er!
What a dream-come-er-true-er was he!

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
With an eye like an eagle
and as tall as a mountain was he!

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
He was brave, he was fearless
and as tough as a mighty oak tree!

From the coonskin cap on the top of ol' Dan
To the heel of his rawhide shoe;
The rippin'est, roarin'est, fightin'est man
The frontier ever knew!

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
And he fought for America
To make all Americans free!

What a Boone! What a doer!
What a dream come-er-true-er was he!

I liked the article. Couple things, how do you overcome fear in possibly something you've failed in. Had a situation where I failed but have always been fearless. And what if you just don't want to go back to the situation due to the fear that developed for whatever reason, does this mean complete failure? If I don't go back and deal with what caused the fear will this always be a crutch and or will I get over it?

This is an excellent piece. Clear, precise and true.

Great message, excellent info and simple yet effective logic.

I like your site and so does my son. He is starting West Point this June and has caught the fancy of SF - which I had done the same (USMA '81, Field Artillery)

I have never heard more truth in a few sentences as I have reading your message. The people of the USA had better wake up. Free enterprise is what built this great country. To have it distroyed by liberals is a crying same. If you just sit in your home or office and complain you are part of the problem. Thanks again for such insite.

Wow, well writen and a very good observation of the current enviroment. It makes me realize there are side effects you can see from this type of Government that is not articulated:

Like Governmenrt contol on what car you drive and what color it will be due to bailing out car manufacturer's who have made too many cars they have to stock pile and don't want to lose the value of the the market etc.

This was a great read.

I will have to say once again that i enjoyed this newsletter fully. The one thing that baffles me is the "oil game" that our country is playing. Doesn't make any sense as you stated in the newsletter as to why we are not using our own natural resources. You would think some upper level gov't ppl would argue this point in numbers......i'm interested to see what new light President Obama will shed on some of these issues. Thank you once again for an informative newsletter. I told you before you need to write a book, don't ignore that compliment my never know what other influence you could have and more importantly what further seeds of knowledge you could plant!!!!! Take care and god bless!!!

Right on brother.  If we do not wake up to the direction we are going soon I fear within 5 to 8 years we will be a two government nation.  The onew who cannot live under socialism will pull away from the socialist states and form their own independent government.  Today we are not a nation that part of it depends on England to survive.  Either the north or south could survive independent of the other.

Do not close your eyes too long--when you open them again you may find the America you once knew no longer exist.

Semper fi Dave, Tim Geithner?? You are the man! If they only taught young people like this, there would be no liberals. The Economy is one thing, after witnessing the treatment of our allies this week, I know now, things are going to be bad for Israel and Western Europe and ourselves. God help us.

This message should be broadcast by FOX, MSNBC, CNN and the other media elite.  What better way for our people to read the truth about where we are and how we got here in the USA.

Great job Dave. I thought this might be of interest or possibly passed on.

I was an Immigration Officer with DHS (USCIS). Those who have served have earned the right to become citizens of our great Nation, in my mind. However, the way the system in general is going, we are certain to face another attack. We are unable to verfiy those in our country or coming into it. The numbers we face way surpase our numbers. The laws do not protect those serving our borders, but those entering illegally. This is a huge liberal attack on our security. We remain at risk, and with the nomination of the new Homeland Security Director, the odds have greatly increased for an attack.

Naturalization Process For The Military

USCIS recognizes the important sacrifices made by non-U.S. citizen members of the United States armed forces and their families and is committed to processing their naturalization applications in a timely and efficient manner while providing exemplary customer service, maintaining the integrity of the immigration system, and the security of the process.  Qualifying military service is generally in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and certain components of the National Guard and the Selected Reserve of the Ready Reserve.

While a member of the U.S. armed forces must meet some of the general requirements and qualifications to become a citizen of the United States, such as good moral character, some of the requirements are either reduced or completely waived.

Specifically, qualifying service members and certain veterans are not required to pay an application fee or a biometrics fee to apply for naturalization, and are not required demonstrate residence or physical presence in the United States.  Additionally, service members who serve during specifically designated periods of hostilities may not need to be lawful permanent residents.

Additionally, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 extended all aspects of the naturalization process, including naturalization applications, interviews, oaths and ceremonies to members of the U.S. armed forces serving overseas. Before Oct. 1, 2004, military service members could only naturalize while physically within the United States.

Finally, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 added Sections 319(e) and 322(d) to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), allowing certain eligible spouses and children of members of the U.S. armed forces to naturalize abroad without traveling to the United States for any part of the naturalization process.

Service in Peacetime

Section 328 of the INA applies to all members of the U.S. armed forces or those already discharged from service. An individual may qualify for naturalization under this provision if he or she has:

Served honorably in the military for at least one year;

Obtained lawful permanent resident status;

Filed an application while still in the service or within six months of separation.

Service in Wartime

Section 329 of the INA applies to members of the U.S. armed forces who serve during specifically designated periods of hostilities.  This section is sometimes referred to as wartime naturalization.  An individual may qualify for naturalization under this provision if he or she has:

Served honorably in active-duty status for any period of time;

Such active-duty service was during a specifically designated period of hostility;

Unlike all other provisions for naturalization, a qualifying service member is not required to be a lawful permanent resident to naturalize under this provision if the service was enlisted or inducted within the United States or other qualifying geographical area.

The Expedited Naturalization Executive Order of 2002 provides for expedited naturalization under this provision to qualified aliens and non-citizen nationals serving honorably in an active-duty status in the U.S. armed forces beginning on Sept. 11, 2001 to the present.  This section also covers veterans of designated past wars and conflicts.

Specially trained USCIS customer service specialists at the Nebraska Service Center staff the toll-free Military Help Line (1-877-CIS-4MIL). They assist service members, their families, attorneys and others representing them with military-specific naturalization and immigration issues.

Specialists across USCIS have been selected to handle military naturalization packets, and each consider this responsibility a privilege and an honor, and do all that they can to ensure that applications are processed and completed as expeditiously as possible.

In addition, every military installation has a designated point-of-contact to assist service members in preparing the naturalization application packet.  This contact is generally in the military legal office or in the personnel division.  Service members should use this contact to help prepare and file a complete naturalization application packet.

Dave, this is one of the most sensible, clear messages I've read.  You are absolutely right.  It also goes to the fact that the Federal Reserve Bank system is the root of our country going down the tubes.  That, as well as, crooked politicians, lobbyists, and ignorant voters.  I wrote about 15 letters to congress people and news outlets protesting the TARP bailout.  Of course, it didn't make a difference.  I don't know what the solution is unless we have an awakening and a revolution.  A very good book on this subject is Meltdown by Thomas E. Woods, Jr.

SF Gear,

I enjoy everything you send. I also have something of interest you may want to know about. My dad is going to Washington DC to participate in a Conference about the WeatherUnderground.

It is about going after and getting Justice for the Murder of his Sergeant in the San Francisco PD. He will be accompanied by Mr Larry Grathwohl, an FBI Informant who infiltrated this Communist Terrorist Group. The "WO" and the "BLA" (Black Liberation Army) were Communist trained Domestic Insurgents. They were trained by Cuban Intelligence and funded by the Soviet Union. The ironic thing was while our country was at War in Vietnam, our Police were fighting a low intensity Insurgency here at home from NY to SF. Here are some links below with the information, Thanks,

SFC James Pera "Jimmy" (Son of SGT ret. James R Pera SFPD & Vietnam Vet)

US Army

The Weather Underground, the BLA, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn

My son is SFC James C. Pera. He is a member of the 19th SFG. He gave me your Email address and stated that you might be interested in what I have to say.

I am James R. Pera, a retired San Francisco Police Sergeant. I served that Department from April 1, 1968 until July 25, 1998. All of my service was in patrol, ten years as a patrolman and twenty years as a sergeant.

There was much upheaval in the streets of American cities during the 1960s and 70s and I experienced some of the violence and unrest that was going on, during this period.

Below, is my personal account of the night of Feb.16, 1970, when Golden Gate Park Police Station, in San Francisco, Calif. was bombed by the Weather Underground.

I will be presenting this account before the National Press Club, on Thursday, March 12, 2009. Others on the panel will be Larry Grathwohl, the only person to infiltrate that communist terrorist organization. He will describe his relationship with Bill Ayers and inform the audience that Ayers told him that Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers wife, was the person who planted the bomb that killed my sergeant and wounded nine of my fellow officers.

Also present at the conference will be Cliff Kincaid, founder of "America Survival," who is also editor of "Accuracy in the Media," and Herbert Romerstein, a former investigator for the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, who once worked for John Ashcroft. He is an expert on communism and their links to terrorist groups and will present that information.

Not that it's relevant to the information that I am relating to you, but my son told me that I should mention that I spent three years in the U.S. Army. June 1963-June 1966. I served in the 2/506 Abn, 101st Airborne and then transferred to the 1st Cavalry where I served for a brief time as a rifleman, in C1/7 Cav., in Vietnam.

Thank you,
Jim Pera

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

I flew out here from California, today, because I thought that it was important to impress upon the nation what it was like to be a police officer during the time, when the Weather Underground and it's affiliate organization, the Black Liberation Army were conducting their terrorist activities against our infrastructure and in particular the police.

Let me summarize, briefly, my own experiences.

Although I did not participate in any investigations, regarding these two cowardly and despicable groups, I was at the scene of their dastardly deeds on three occassions and have knowledge of other atrocities that they participated in; incidents that caused death and destruction.

First let me start with the bombing of Park Police Station, in San Francisco, Calif., on the night of Feb. 16, 1970. I was a young 24 year old patrolman, with a pregnant wife and infant daughter.

I was working the 7pm to 3am shift, with my partner, Bob Fife. It was a rainy night and we were heading into the station to do reports. While on Haight Street and several blocks from the station, an emergency call came out over our police radio from a Patrol Special Officer, by the name of Serge White. His call, although calm, was issued in a very urgent voice and went, "406 Park Station. Send six ambulances. We just had a bombing!"

I was driving the police vehicle and floored the accelerator, as I sped down Haight Street, rounded the corner, going south on Stanyan and then proceeded right on Kezar Drive traveling west. I entered the parking lot, of the station, where I came to a screeching halt.

There had, indeed, been a bombing and the first thing that my eyes beheld were two of my fellow police officers, Ron Martin and Al Arnaud. Ron was getting up off the ground and Al, the son of a Deputy Chief, who later resigned to become a lawyer, was propped up on one arm, obviously dazed.

Martin and Arnaud had been about to enter their police vehicle, in preparation for working the midnight watch, when the bomb went off, it's deadly fragments barely missing them. Fortunately, for them, the Sergeants Police vehicle, which was parked between their car and the window ledge, where the bomb had been planted, took the brunt of the outward blast, saving the two officers from death.

There were gaping holes in their car, one of which was in the left front fender and had just missed Officer Martins leg. Had the shrapnel been over just a few more inches, Ron Martin would have probably lost a leg or an ankle or even worse been killed. As it was, both officers were knocked down by the concussion from the bomb blast, a blast so powerful that bomb fragments were found on the roof of the three story, Polytechnic High School, almost two blocks away, across the street from Kezar Stadium.

As my partner and I alighted from our vehicle and went to assist, we were met by Sergeant Paul Kurpinski, a well liked and respected man, that we all referred to as the "silver fox" because of his gray hair. He grabbed me and my partner and told us to cordone off the parking lot area, where the bomb had been planted, on the window sill, in order to keep people out. At that point there was a concern that another bomb might be present. Furthermore, the station gas pump was in this area and it's location was cause for concern.

As we were getting our instructions from Sergeant Kurpinski, Sergeant Don Lemstrom, came on the scene and Kurpinski just shook his head and stated to Lemstrom, "Brians gone." I will never forget the look of bewilderment, on his face, when he uttered those words, nor will I forget the shock on Lemstroms face.

My partner and I stood outside, cordoning off the area, for several hours, as investigators and brass arrived and started collecting evidence and towing vehicles. We watched as the ambulances came and left, carrying our wounded coworkers.

A large crowd gathered out in the street and were kept back from the station. Little did I know that my late father, was out in the street, frantically trying to find out if I was alive or dead. He had been watching the late night news, when the report of the bombing was announced and had tried to call the station. Being that the phones were out and would not be up for several hours, he, as I'm sure others did, rushed to the station, in order to find out how their police officer family members were. Imagine the panic that must have consumed them in the hours of uncertainty that passed between the bombing and information coming out as to who was and was not a casualty.

Once released from perimeter security, I went into the station, along with my partner and saw first hand, the carnage that the bomb had reaped upon my work place and friends.

The window to the business office and an interior window, where prisoners were processed for booking were blown out. The walls and furniture were pock marked by shrapnel. Barbed wire fence post staples, from the bomb, were scattered throughout the ground floor of the station. Blood was all over the floor, desks and walls and was heaviest where Sergeant Brian V. McDonnell suffered mortal wounds to his neck, eyes, face and brain.

The station looked like a scene one might expect to see in a war, with wounded officers, blood, shattered windows, damaged walls, floors and ceilings ,but then; it was a war. It was indeed an urban war and it was being conducted by subversive and murderous groups, such as the Weather Underground, whose doctrine advocated the overthrow of the U.S. government, by any means, including murder and assassination, with the goal of replacing it with communism, and by their allies in the Black Liberation Army, whose primary purpose was to kill police officers and destroy our system of government as we know it.

The bomb had been set to explode at the change of watch, when the largest number of police officers would be in the business office, coming on and going off duty. The on oncoming officers would be filling out hot sheets, making entries in their notebooks and checking teletypes for wanted criminals and crimes that had occurred. The officers going off duty would be wrapping up their paper work and finishing up reports, prior to reporting off duty.

Fortunately, the bomb went off prematurely, by a few minutes and many of the officers were still upstairs in the locker room or just coming down and the office wasn't loaded with the full capacity that it would have been a few minutes later.

Inside the office were Sergeant Brian V. McDonnell, Officer Bob Fogarty, Officer Frank Rath. Nearby was Sergeant Paul Kotta.

Sergeant McDonnell, was checking teletypes across the room from the window where the bomb was placed. He was looking at the results of the Police Officers Association election, in which he was running for station representative. Standing next to him was Officer Fogarty, a big friendly Irishman, who was the Patrol Wagon driver.

Officer Frank Rath,a native of New York City, was seated at the desk in a corner, bounded by the window where the bomb was placed, on the south side and another window on the east.

When the bomb exploded, Sergeant Brian McDonnell along with Officer Fogarty, took the brunt of the blast. The sergeant took schrapnel, which consisted of barbed wire fence post staples through his eyes, throat and brain. Officer Fogarty, took nineteen of the staples in his body, miraculously none of them hitting any vital organs, but blinding him in one eye, an injury that ultimately led to his retiring on disability.

Frank Rath had leaned back against the east wall, from the desk where he was seated and the blast blew out the window, in from of him. He was momentarily knocked senseless and when other officers rushed downstairs to assist those who had been wounded, they found him wandering around in an incoherant daze, with his gun out, not knowing what had hit him.

Sergeant Paul Kotta, who was nearby, was knocked unconsious and several more officers sustained varying injuries, the most prominent being damage to their hearing. A few of those officers were Bob O'Sullivan, Ed Buckner and Karl Strom. The others have slipped my mind with time.

Officer Jerry Doherty, a good friend of mine, who was a mentor and later became my Lieutenant, when I was a Sergeant, rushed to the aid of Sergeant McDonnell, ripped off his uniform shirt and applied pressure to the sergeants neck wound, in an attempt to stop the bleeding, Unfortunately, the sergeant died a couple of days later, without regaining conciousness. He left a wife and two kids. He was forty five years old, his life snuffed out by the murderous cowards of the Weather Underground.

As a side note and to add some more of the human element to the story I would like to add that my wife, who was pregnant, had been home, doing dishes and watching the news, just after feeding our infant daughter. She was tired and fed up with the news of rioting and unrest on the college campuses and streets of America and turned the T.V. off in disgust. She finished her household chores and went to bed. She slept peacefully through the night, knowing nothing of the deadly drama that had unfolded at Park Station. I feel very fortunate for this because I don't know what the trauma of uncertainty would have caused her or my second daughter, who she was carrying, if she had been subjected to the emotions and fear that would have accompanied the uncertainty of my status.

The next morning, I remember seasoned day watch officers coming into the station stunned and in shock. I remember one of them, in particular, an old timer who was usually a joker and a funny guy. He broke down in tears, unable to grasp what had happened to his friends and the station that he had worked at for so many years.

Think about this people and absorb the incident that I have just related to you.

Think about the tragedy that befell the McDonnell family, a family that had already lost two other members, in the line of duty, the first in the 1930s and another in the 1950s.

Think of Sgt. McDonnell, his life stolen from him, at the age of 45 and his wife and children being left without a father and husband.

Think about all the wounded and maimed officers and their families.

Think about the ignorant and clueless people who believe that just because this incident happened thirty nine years ago that "we should just all move on and let the past stay in the past." I've got news for them. The dead don't rise. They stay dead.

Think about Sergeant McDonnell and all the murdered and maimed victims, of the Weather Underground, when you see the smug, unrepentant face of the sniveling, gutter crawling rat, who goes by the name of Professor Bill Ayers.

Think about his loathsome wife, Bernardine Dohrn, who has been named by former undercover informant, Larry Grathwohl, as the wretched sub human scumbag, who planted the bomb that killed Sergeant McDonnell.

Think about these two criminals, Ayers and Dohrn, who got off on technicalities because a judge ruled that wire tap evidence, collected by the FBI, violated the rules of evidence.

Think about Ayers' statement, after the dismissal of criminal charges, when he said,"Guilty as hell and free as a bird."

Think about Ayers and Dohrn and their positions, as educators, at two different prestigious univerities, the University of Illinois, at Chicago and Northwestern, also in Chicago.

Think of how they have access to the minds of impressionable young students, in the controlled enviroment of academia, free to spread the radical ideas that they espouse, some of which were developed and nurtured on trips to Cuba and in consultation with agents from other communist countries. Think about the role that they play as they endeavor to corrupt a whole new generation of young, impressionable people, to their radical marxist ideas.

Think about how Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn and others of their ilk have lived and prospered in our society, a society that they had hoped to destroy.

Think about how these two Marxist Leninist traitors are allowed to breath the air of freedom, when they should be gasping on the stagnent stenches of a prison cell or better yet mouldering in a post execution gravesite.

Before giving these two despicable people a forum, in your newpapers and periodicals, perhaps you should do a little bit of research, on their past and present activities. You will find that under those calm facades and intellectual masks, that Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn are vicious, cowardly terrrorists and are probably guilty of murder, as well.

Give up your political correctness, overcome your liberal bias and do some honest research into the background of these two criminal frauds, Ayers and Dohrn. Uncover their past and reveal them to the public. The American people deserve nothing less.

Neither A Hero, Nor A Villain

[ Regarding the incident in Afghanistan where the contracted soldier, Don Ayala, shot and killed the Taliban man who viciously set fire to the unarmed young American woman who was working as a social worker; and his sentencing to occur on May 8th in Alexandria ]

Much has been said about this highly-charged incident, and coincidentally, most of what has been said has been a highly-charged emotional response. Either the shooter is a hero, or he is a villain; a sainted avenger or a war criminal. I've read nothing but either emotional extreme.

Most people drift through their lives satisfied that by nature they are impervious to a violent response, satisfied the circumstances would never arise that would cause them to shoot someone deliberately. Luckily for most those special circumstances indeed never do present that would cause them to kill another. And because of a lack of imagination, maybe even compassion, these people smugly assure themselves that they are above such a response, ever.

But that special set of circumstances can happen to anyone. It happened to Don Ayala. He, like all of us, has spent his life watching the day-in day-out routine selfishness of humans, the careless, greedy, mean, commonplace lower human qualities displayed endlessly everywhere everyday in everybody. Then after a career of intense soldiering, he was assigned to protect a big-hearted young woman working thanklessly in a war-torn region trying to help the Afghani citizens and improve relations. She was one of those unusual creatures whose heart is full of loving kindness, a kind of rare innocence sometimes glimpsed in children, rarer still in adults. His job was to protect this woman.

Now put yourself in this man's shoes. He was witness to this woman's daily kindness, her vulnerability, and it's easy to imagine it inspired in great measure one of our most noble human impulses, the protection and safeguarding of the innocent. Now take this noble impulse to safeguard and protect, watch her work tirelessly attempting to help people who hate her because of her nationality, and then watch her doused with gasoline, viciously set on fire, and cruelly, shockingly, fatally burned. The very image of goodness is sadistically violated right before your eyes. There is only one possible response: blinding moral outrage. And if you happen to have a gun in your hand, that violator, the vile creature that could do such a thing, is shot. Inevitably. If you are capable of being honest with yourself you can see that you, too, would shoot.

America trained this man, Don Ayala, to be a first class protector and soldier, which is the training the United States Special Forces provides. He was thoroughly trained to have split second reactions to dangerous situations, and the safety of others has always been dependent upon his fast responses. In this scenario there wasn't the time for introspection about the rule of law and the process of justice. And this didn't happen on the streets in America; he couldn't call 911 and hand the attacker over to the police. These were unique circumstances: in reality this was a battlefield, his charge was brutally attacked, and he reacted fast. In this case, in these circumstances, a calculating response is too much to ask. His reaction was human, protective, and immediate, nothing more. Nothing more noble, nothing more sinister than that. He was neither a hero nor a villain.

This was an impossible situation in a warring foreign country, and he responded in a way any of us would respond. He can't be held to the same formula of culpability that you would apply to Americans in America. Prison is no answer, because there is no answer.

Like it or not, the Second Amendment to the US Constitution is the one that GUARANTEES ALL the others...

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense (waiting for attack).

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either... The final weapon is the brain... All else is supplemental.

Basic Rules:

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight and it hurts too much to run, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46'.

6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm.. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'

7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

8. Great Quote - Florida 's got it right. Bravo for Sheriff Judd!!!

Some "dirtbag" in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop ended up "executing" the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed. A statewide manhunt ensued. The low-life was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun.

SWAT team officers fired and hit the guy 68 times.

Naturally, the media asked why they shot him 68 times. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, told the Orlando Sentinel: "That's all the bullets we had!" (Talk about an all time classic great answer!!!)

But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in our home. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

The Hope of a Nation

By Rev G.J. Rako
LTC (Ret)

Today we seem to be receiving bad news everyday. They tell us the economy is crumbling. We hear of another round of company lay-offs. Tremendous spending, borrowing, and the threat of rising taxes cause great anxiety. We fear deflation, inflation, or total collapse of our dollar. Socialism and a world government seem to begin and end every conversation. The threat of terrorism, illegal immigration, drug cartels and the list of fears seem to be never ending.

Cheer up my friends, Jesus Christ controls history. He is eternal God and He has a perfect plan. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then His perfect plan includes you.

Many years ago, there was another inauguration. At that time, as today, many people were discouraged about the direction our country was taking. R.B.Thieme Jr. Pastor of Berachah Church presented a wonderful message. He addressed the fear, the worry, and the anxiety of the nation. He provided the straightforward Biblical solutions to these problems, as only he could.

I have included his message below. It is as timely now as it was then.

Before you begin your Bible study, as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, be sure you have named your sins privately to God the Father.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Known, Unknown and Forgotten sins) (1Jn_1:9)

You will then be in fellowship with God, Filled with the Holy Spirit and ready to learn Truth from the Word of God.

"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth," (Joh_4:24)

In Whom Do You Trust!

The True Hope of a nation

The next few moments are devoted to silent prayer. You have the privacy of your priesthood, the option of rebound if necessary to insure the filling of God the Spirit for the perception and metabolism of the Word of Truth. You also have the opportunity of blotting everything else out except concentration on the teaching of the Word of God. In preparation for our study, let us pray.

Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of being sustained logistically in this, the devils, world; and that we have the privilege and the opportunity of fulfilling the most exciting and the most unusual plan of all human history. We are grateful that we live in the Church Age, where we have been given so much, and where the significance of the ordinary believer is beyond measure. We pray that God the Holy Spirit will challenge us regarding the things that we note, for we ask it in Christ’s name, Amen.

From time to time, we pause for what I call inculcation to emphasize on how Divine Thoughts are formed. One source is eschatology, the study of future events from biblical Prophecy. From this knowledge, we can appreciate and understand that the source of our hope and happiness is our guaranteed future with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rarely do I watch television, or the news, but I did this evening. I wanted to see the crowd at the inauguration festivities. I knew the media interviews with people in the crowd would be excellent. There was quite a cross-section of people from this country attending the inauguration. Almost without exception, everyone interviewed expressed similar ideas. Some were eloquent, some spoke with hesitation, some with a measure of confusion, but they all centered eventually on one word — HOPE. Their hope was not the Biblical hope of confidence in the Lord and in the Word of God— the function of the faith-rest drill as one of the problem-solving devices. In effect, their hope was based on unrealistic expectations — a new face in the White House, a new administration, a political change. To the people who were interviewed, political change meant something better for them. Hope was the word they used. They were depending upon government — a government that has failed to fulfill its functions and obligations and has the greatest indebtedness in human history. They were depending on a congress, on a president, on people, and on a government that has shown tremendous Fiscal irresponsibility, to say the least. They thought the government either owed them a living or that change would bring something they wanted — happiness. A better environment was just around the corner.

These people came from long distances; (Some people who were obviously not well-to-do, others who obviously were) all kinds of people; they were like sheep. They were looking for something they obviously had not found.

Then I began to Think of, (Jer_17:5) because this passage describes exactly what the people in this country expressed. Never have I seen on television so many people from all walks of life, which had such tremendous needs. Because they cannot define their needs in terms of God's Thinking, like you can, they are looking for a man to solve their problems. They are looking for government to do something for them. They are looking at people to wave a magic wand, as it were, and to give them what they want to make them happy.

From, (Jer_17:5) I want you to understand, as a believer in Jesus Christ, what occurred on this special inauguration day. We live in the Church Age, the dispensation of the ordinary believer, when God has provided more for us than for the greatest heroes of the Old Testament. We have something that is beyond any riches that man can measure!

I am sure many of those people at the inauguration have heard the Gospel; I am sure many of them are believers. But they have been exposed to so much false twisted Truth, that they have no concept of what is true value; WHERE and HOW we will spend eternity!

Many born-again believers are described this way, as are many unbelievers. Those thousands milling about tonight in Washington, D.C., looking for happiness, going to the various parties, the balls, all celebrations of a change; because change has been the key word subjecting themselves to a false hope, how are they described? The Scripture says they are "tumbleweeds."

In high desert country, at an altitude of at least 2,500 feet, you can look in at least three directions and see mountains. What a magnificent view; the mornings are cold, the days warm, and the winds blow almost constantly. When I was a young officer in the horse cavalry at Fort Bliss, we would ride out, mounted, troop after troop, going on a Field training exercise. The wind would come up. Our horses would shy and rear as hundreds and hundreds of tumbleweeds, like a wave of advancing troops, would blow across our path. Tumbleweeds have no roots; they are vulnerable to any wind that blows. I suppose if tumbleweeds had souls, they would be looking for a place to settle and take root.

Prosperity is the Hebrew word tov, equivalent to the Greek agathos, meaning "good of intrinsic value." It can be translated "Values and or Virtue."

HE WILL NOT SEE VALUES (The opportunity to believe in Christ and or to grow to Spiritual maturity) WHEN THEY COME; FOR HE SHALL LIVE IN PARCHED PLACES... (Jer_17:6)

There are many, many reasons the people of this client nation are living in parched places. It has nothing to do with what they possess in life. It has nothing to do with their financial condition, or their job, or lack of one. It has nothing to do with any form of human security. People with human security, people without human security live in parched places. And, the reason is given in the previous verse, "whose heart turns away from the Lord." Everyone is looking for assurance. There is a tremendous restlessness in the land today. Everyone wants change! But, change of human environment will not help. Only that which is stable and rooted in God's Thinking can offer comfort and happiness! Truth keeps people from becoming tumbleweeds in the desert.

FOR HE SHALL BE LIKE A TUMBLEWEED IN THE DESERT, FOR HE WILL NOT SEE THE ABSOLUTE GOOD [Spiritual Values: Salvation and Spiritual maturity] WHEN IT COMES; (Everyone has an opportunity to be saved and grow to Spiritual maturity! (Rom_1:18-20) HE SHALL LIVE IN PARCHED PLACES IN THE DESERT. (Jer_17:6)

Except for the parched places, the desert can be a place of wonder and beauty. The tragedy is that parched places describe not only the unbelieving populace, but also the majority of born-again believers in the time in which we live. When I saw on the television tonight people who had been sleeping out on lawns since dawn so they could be in the right place to see the inauguration and the parade, and all the revelry — people who have placed their hope in the promises of a man — I thought, How heartbreaking to realize these people are so close and yet so far from the Truth of the Word of God; which is so readily available in our land. They live only in parched places in the desert.

They do not know that Divine problem-solving devices are the God-given means of applying metabolized Truth to experience, and provide the only perfect environment in the world today. That environment is in the soul!

Now you who have Truth in your soul are prepared to understand the significance of this inauguration day of the forty-second President of the United States. You have the opportunity to see what is really happening because you have that perfect environment of the soul; metabolized Truth circulating in the seven compartments of the stream of consciousness.

All of the earnest emotion in the world, all of the yearning for a better life cannot solve the problems of this nation. There is no substitute for the perfect environment of tranquility and contentment, which can exist only in the soul of a Spiritually mature born-again believer! That perfect environment is the Word of Truth, metabolized Truth from which originates the problem-solving devices. The problem-solving devices not only apply Truth to experience, but provide the only perfect environment available until the Second Advent and the-millennial reign-of Jesus Christ.

"Being made happy" is the passive voice in the Hebrew. Happiness is not an instant condition. Happiness is a process that develops and continues when maximum metabolized Truth circulates in your soul. The problem-solving devices not only apply to your experience on a continual basis, but, at the same time create the perfect environment, the motivation, and the Thinking God intends for us to possess.

As I watched the inauguration, I thought of you who have consistently learned Truth. What a contrast between you and those people who are so hungry for change, seeking hope, depending upon man when God says cursing is the result of trusting in man. Some of you have found that curse to be true as you depended on a husband, a wife, a friend. You depended on someone you thought was going to change everything for you, but they did not. You did not apply Truth.

I occasionally see on some of your faces the same thing I saw in the faces of that crowd. You come to church for a "fix’ as it were. You want a one-shot inspiration, a religious experience, and then you are gone to do your own thing. It will not work!

Trust is the qal imperfect of the verb batach in the Hebrew. This word is used for the faith-rest drill. Another word, amen, is used for salvation by faith. Even the Greek transliterates amen the same.

Faith is not just the pattern for Old Testament salvation, but the pattern for salvation always. The hiphil stem of amen is the word used for faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. How much faith does it take to be saved? Just a little bit more than none at all. In the privacy of your own soul, you can speak inaudibly to God the Father and say, Father, I believe in Jesus Christ. That is all! How much faith is that? Just a little bit more than none at all.

By contrast, batach, is the faith of a believer applying the Promises of God to problems. I call this the faith-rest drill. Abraham applied faith-rest. All the great heroes of the Old Testament lived the faith-rest life. We, too, can have faith-rest.

The faith-rest drill, one of the problem-solving devices, establishes Divine Thinking. The faith-rest drill uses metabolized Truth, and makes application of Promises to experience, and applies the Doctrinal rationales, e.g., (Rom_8:26-32).

Where do you place your hope? Hope in the Bible means confidence. Where is your confidence? In man? We have just seen in, (Jer_17:5) that confidence in man is "being cursed." "Being cursed" is in the passive voice indicating it is a process just as attaining permanent happiness is a process. Happiness is a process because you cannot have the problem-solving devices in place in an instant. Learning and applying Truth takes time; it is a process — a little today, a little tomorrow, a little the next day. Truth every day is our life, our blessing, our capacity for life, our confidence, our love, and our happiness.

The Biblical word for hope means confidence, absolute confidence in a fantastic plan, in being a part of that plan, having temporal impact, but far more important, hope has eternal repercussions. You stop running around and looking for hope, looking for some person to satisfy whatever your hopes, your desires, your lusts; you may be looking for some job, looking for some short-cut to wealth — seeking but not knowing what you are seeking. I wanted to shout to those people at the inauguration, "you are putting your confidence in the wrong thing"! You are depending on a man! You are depending on a government! You are depending on an organization that has demonstrated a remarkable amount of incompetence! Political change will not alter anything! Change just means a different group of imperfect people come in with the same old incompetence, the same old power lust. If you are depending upon people, you are in the process of being cursed. And if you are depending upon God, you are in the process of being blessed.

Being blessed through Truth applied to your life makes you an invisible hero, the positive impact of the Church Age believer through personal execution of the plan of God. That Concept is the only way there will ever be change that fulfills the Principle,

Water refers to Truth. Water makes the tree, (A Believer) grow.

What is the difference between the water and the stream? "Water" is the entire canon of Scripture. The "stream" is Truth you are taught on a consistent basis. The stream is where your roots go. And, the roots are the problem-solving devices that make the tree strong. You will not become a "tumbleweed." Now note the last half of verse 8.

Why is the believer being made happy without fear? Fear, along with guilt, is an emotional complex of sins. The two sins together are destructive to your Spiritual life. You cannot deal with the adversities of life in fear, nor can you be motivated by guilt. The problem-solving devices remove fear and guilt as false motivation.

"Heat" is the outside pressures of adversity and prosperity. For the problem-solving devices on the defense line of the soul prevent the outside pressures from becoming the inside pressures of stress in the soul. How disturbing to see people suddenly becoming enthusiastic with unrealistic expectations. The greater the unrealistic expectation, the greater the disappointment. From great disappointment follows disillusionment and reaction. Disappointment always exists in human

history, with one exception. When your expectation is from the Lord, you are never disappointed!

"Leaves" are a metaphor for problem-solving devices in your soul and "always green" is applying problem-solving devices to life.

To "bear fruit" is the invisible impact of the believer growing in grace, functioning under his very own Spiritual life, and executing the protocol plan of God for the Church Age. Bearing fruit for us today is the invisible impact of the invisible hero.

What does it mean for people to have a vision? The Hebrew word referred originally to the writings or the messages of the prophets of Israel, specifically to the messages that were recorded and became a part of the Word of God. This does not exclude the fact that the prophets of Israel also had other messages to the people that were not recorded, because they were not pertinent to future generations. But vision refers to the content of the message of the prophets and that content was God's Thinking --- that ALL believers are to use to Think with! (2Pe_1:20-21)

WHERE THERE IS NO DIVINE COMMUNICATION, [Where there is no Thinking with Truth] THE PEOPLE PERISH, (The people are unrestrained; ignorant and arrogant). (Pro_29:18)

The niphal imperfect of para, "perish," means to "let loose, to run wild," not to physically die, but to be "unrestrained, to be out of hand, to let loose in the sense of letting something slip through your fingers." Where there is no Truth; you let that happiness and blessing slip through your fingers. Perish means to be "ignorant and arrogant." Unruly people are often ignorant and arrogant. Their ignorance of Truth motivates their unruliness, their lack of restraint.

SO HE WHO GUARDS [Observes, keeps, and keeps on keeping Divine Thinking] THE LAW. (Pro_29:18) The adversative vowel plus the qal active participle of shamar means "to guard, to keep, to keep on keeping, to keep on observing," therefore to persist in the perception and metabolism of Truth. This is not just a one-shot deal, when you need a Spiritual ‘fix’ when things are going wrong, but CONSISTENT perception and use of Truth!

The word "Law" was used for all of the Mosaic Law. The first five books of the Old Testament, written by Moses, called the Pentateuch, include the Spiritual, social, and Divine establishment laws for Israel, not just the Ten Commandments. "Law" eventually came to refer to the teaching of the Thoughts of the Word of God as They then existed; and now exists!

...HAPPY IS HE WHO KEEPS [Or guards] THE LAW [The teaching of Truth]. (Pro_29:18)

In the book of Proverbs "Truth," when used in poetry, means the teaching of Spiritual Wisdom. And in Proverbs, every verse is poetry.

The noun esher is translated "happy or sharing the happiness of God." Happiness and contentment come only through applying Divine Wisdom to adversity and prosperity!

No nation survives long without having a national crisis and that is especially true of a client nation to God. You know there is no such thing as a Christian nation, and never will be. Nations cannot be Christian; only individuals can become Christian. Based on a Judeo-Christian heritage the founding fathers provided for religious freedom in the Constitution of the United States. Although many of the inhabitants of this country profess Christianity, the laws of Divine establishment, upon which the Constitution was based, were set up to insure the protection, survival, privacy, property and blessing of Christians and non-Christians alike. Religious freedom depends upon the separation of church and state, (Mat_22:21; cf., Rom_13:1-7). Christianity cannot be forced on people. Christianity must be optional. The first half of the option is to hear the Gospel and then respond:

And, to respond is the other half of the option:

BUT HE WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE SHALL NOT SEE LIFE BUT THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDES ON HIM. (Joh_3:36) The same is true for the ENTIRE WORD OF GOD! First we must hear; and then we must BELIEVE and USE IT! ; Heb_10:23).

In a client nation to God there is the desire to communicate the Gospel, to give people a chance to hear, to accept, or reject Jesus Christ. God the Holy Spirit is the sovereign executive of personal evangelism. (Joh_6:44) That means all the begging, all the weeping, all the wailing, all the pressure of any kind — coming forward, raising your hand, jumping through a psychological hoop — are futile. Our responsibility is to make the Gospel clear. The function of God the Holy Spirit is to make our faith effective for salvation. (Tit_3:5) With the Holy Spirit as the sovereign executive of evangelism we can only make the issue clear; no more no less. For people to say, we’re going to produce a Christian nation, we’re going to pass Christian laws, is tyranny.

Some of the horrors during the time in which we live are when born-again believers do not have Divine Thinking, and do not have the problem-solving devices, and do not understand God’s plan for their lives!

They inevitably will enter into the legalism of tyranny. They will actually become involved in Christian activism = MORAL AND OR IMMORAL DEGENERACY.

Christians who are ignorant of what the Word of God teaches are unrestrained. In activism, they can destroy property and even the lives of those who disagree with them.

God has given us the greatest plan in the world, yet there is no restraint on these believers who are involved in activism. By activism, I do not mean voting, I do not mean entering into the political activities that are related to the governing process of this country. But I do mean crowds in the street, yelling and screaming and destroying property, being viciously intolerant in their attitude toward others. There is no place for activism.

The power of Christianity is not political or visible, but is Spiritual and invisible. The Christian way of life is operating within the protocol plan of God for the Church Age. The influence of the invisible hero is the only way this nation will ever bring blessing to its citizens. You must execute the protocol plan of God and become a member of the pivot, the spiritually mature believers of a client nation. This is the dispensation of the pivot of invisible heroes whose production, called in the Bible "fruit," (Gal_5:22-23) is the true hope for this nation.

One of the most extraordinary periods of history occurred between A.D. 96 and 192 in the Roman Empire during the period of the Antonine Caesars. For nearly a century, few troops were ever seen within the Empire. And, the distant clash of arms on the Tigris and the Euphrates, which runs through Baghdad today, and on the Rhine and on the Danube scarcely disturbed the Mediterranean lands of the Roman Empire. The Mediterranean was a Roman sea. Rome controlled North Africa and every land surrounding the Mediterranean. Six emperors or Caesars ruled SPQR, Senatus Populusque Romanus, "the Senate and the People of Rome," as the Romans called themselves. Today, we know them as the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. They even had a flag, a banner emblazoned with SPQR. The six Caesars who ruled SPQR were Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus. The last two emperors even persecuted Christians. None of them were born-again believers.

Yet born-again believers had more to do with the prosperity of that period than any time in history. Born-again believers launched the pivot from Ephesus, the Roman province of Asia as western Turkey was called in those days. The men who ruled Rome were mostly unbelievers. Yet the individual flourished during the most impressive period of prosperity in history. Everything changed: Women were respected; there was a vigorous economy, a stimulating social life, and a dynamic Spiritual life among believers, with fantastic prosperity the most phenomenal period in history. Why? Because a certain number of ordinary believers executed the protocol plan of God and became the beginning of a pivot. The pivot did not exist in Rome: the pivot existed in Asia Minor, long before the Ottoman Turks conquered the area. Asia Minor was a wonderful place with wonderful believers.

Edward Gibbon, the famous English historian of the last century, wrote a history in five volumes on the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Gibbon believed that a person, if allowed his choice, would prefer to have lived in the time of the Antonine Caesars than in any other period of history. The German historian, Theodor Mommsen, a famous professor of Roman law, also describes this period as the Golden Age of history. Paraphrasing him from the German: This Empire fostered the peace and prosperity of the many nations, united under its sway, longer and more completely, than any other leading power has ever succeeded in doing.

How marvelous that a pivot should rise first in Ephesus and then spread throughout the empire. It is interesting that the canon of Scripture was completed in A.D. 96, the very year that Nerva became the emperor. And the dynamics of the Spiritual life of the pivot was so phenomenal that the greatest period of blessing ever known in history lasted for almost a hundred years. Perhaps now you can begin to see the dynamics of a pivot with Divine Thinking; established through learning the plan of God for our life.

What is important to you? Would you be standing in that spectacular scene that extends from the very high needle of the Washington Monument all the way to the White House? Would you be able to stand there with Divine Thinking or would you, if interviewed, simply express the hunger, the desire, the hope of so many people thinking, now that there is a change, life is going to be wonderful?

"Clarence Manion, the dean of the Notre Dame law school from 1941-1952, boarded a plane sometime during the early 1950’s; one of the passengers recognized him and went over and sat down next to him. Dean Manion was doing some work but he had to put it all away as this man began asking questions. He told Professor Manion that he was one of the greatest thinkers in our country at that time. He wanted to talk with the professor about the unfortunate condition of our country. So, Dean Manion listened patiently, conversed with him, and began making notes while the man was speaking.

As the plane landed he got up, shook hands with the man, who again told Dean Manion what a wonderful privilege it was to talk with a man of his caliber of mentality. Dean Manion smiled, thanked him, and handed him a slip of paper on which he had written these words:

Man begins his existence in bondage, and rises from bondage through Spiritual faith, from Spiritual faith to courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from (DEPENDENCY back into BONDAGE!) (THE WHOLE WORLD IS HERE NOW! (Pro_13:13; Pro_14:2; Pro_15:32)

This is the cycle of civilization; national and personal. The only hope of breaking this cycle is the believer who gives his attention to the Word of God.

We are grateful, heavenly Father, for the privilege and the opportunity of fellowshipping in the Word; for the challenges that come to us through the Scripture; for the Thoughts that we learn; for the fantastic provision for each one of us as Church Age believers, the dispensation of the ordinary person. We are grateful for the fantastic portfolio of invisible assets provided for each one of us to have, not only Spiritual impact on history, but to be recorded forever in the eternal state as the names and the deeds of believers who become invisible heroes; to provide hope for America not through revolutions, or violence, or self-righteous arrogance, not through crusader arrogance, or attempting to change things by any form of tyranny, not through Christian activism, or civil disobedience, but through our invisible impact. Therefore, Father, in view of what has occurred today and what has been occurring in this country, challenge us under the principle of separation of church and state to fulfill our Spiritual destiny as provided for us, that we might have a legitimate impact on this nation that we love so dearly. May we become the true hope for our nation. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I hope that message from the Bible did as much for you as it did for me. It was a source of great encouragement to me when I first heard it live, sitting in a pew at Berachah Church. It did it for me again last month when I reread this message. I was astounded by its application today. Then I realized the "Word of God is alive and powerful" and the "Word of God lives and abides forever." And, of course, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow."

R.B.Thieme Jr. was pastor of Berachah Church for fifty-three years. During that time, he was a beacon of spiritual hope, truth, and confidence for hundreds of thousands of people. He is retired now; however, his son R.B. Thieme III is carrying on in the same tradition of studying and teaching the Word of God. Many people all over this country are adding to the pivot of mature believers by "growing in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ."

I thank God for these men of the Word. I urge you to make the Word a priority in your life and become one of the invisible heroes of our great nation. That is the true hope for the nation.

"Blue Warrior"

The police sniper is no longer just a guy with a rifle. The professional police sniper has become one of the most respected fields in Law Enforcement. I remember a day when the officers on the Sniper Team were either hunters or military veterans. A lot of times they may have been older police veterans leaving the Entry Team to seek a slower paced Sniper position.

Those days are long gone. Today on most SWAT Teams the Sniper may be the most respected and highly trained individual on the team. This occurred because police officers recognized the similarities between police tactical operations and military operations and the value to adopt military training. Cops started to seek out specialized training and before you know it several police trainers were training officers in sniper tactics and field craft. Most of these trainers used the Military Sniper Schools as a template for their courses but with consideration for the police sniper and the problems he may face.

Police Counter Sniper schools today have become intense and very effective. I have attended courses where thirty cops and military sniper's start the course and only five make it to graduation. That is a stark contrast to the training of the early days. We can thank the military snipers for bringing our tactics to a professional level. The military snipers have been doing business since the Revolutionary War and modern day military snipers are clearly the best in the world.

Training events such as the International Sniper Competition have an intrinsic value that is valuable to their participants. The International Sniper Competition brings together the most elite snipers from around the world, the competition showcases thirty-three teams from branches of the U.S. Army, Marines, and Air Force, and for the first time ever the included a law enforcement team, a SWAT team from Pittsburgh. There are eighteen challenging events that examine the team's expertise in long-range shooting, urban combat and covert maneuvering through realistic conflicts and environments.

Those three Pittsburgh Police Counter Snipers that participated in the "International Sniper Competition" at Fort Benning are Detective William Friburger, Officer Teddy Anderson, Robert Krebs and Donald Savko. They finished 19th overall and they finished 1st in the "Aerial shoot" from a Blackhawk helicopter.

Police snipers can be proud of their accomplishment. Finishing first in any of the 18 events with 33 teams competing shows the dedication and Warrior Spirit that embody these men. One of the biggest problems they had to contend with is the long range shooting out to 1000 yards. The average operational police sniper trains for the 100-yard cold bore shot routinely and the average police sniper shot during SWAT operation is between 50 and 70 yards. So the focus for a 1000-yard shot isn't traditional in police sniper training. However, why isn't it? What if a Mumbai style incident occurs on your patrol beat and it's at a large Mall. You may need to take a shot at 600 to 1000 yards to neutralize that threat. Certainly in my town (Metro Detroit) our mall parking lots, defense contractors and auto plants could present a 600 to 1000 yard shot.

It's important not to get hung up on the concept that the police sniper should focus on the 100-yard cold bore shot. To often I have seen police snipers going through my training courses fall apart when you introduce long-range shots. Of course their excuse is their city would never experience that long of a shot. That closed minded approach is negligent and should be avoided. Police snipers need to embrace the Warrior Spirit and train for any possible scenario.

I encourage more SWAT cops to participate in military competitions and I challenge you military units to participate in some of our SWAT competitions. We all are fighting for freedom and the protection of our citizens. Training together can only benefit us all.

What has Really Changed?

This section has been dedicated to the new "call for change" and we say there's nothing new about change.

What Has Really Changed?

Date: 1950

They don't keep feeding you cheese after the trap is sprung.

All "welfare states" are alike. They promise you anything and everything if you'll vote them into power — security, more money for less work, sharing the wealth, "soaking the rich".

So you vote them the power — and then find you have voted away your freedom. You find that all such promises of something for nothing were false — as such promises must always be.

For example:

One "welfare state" government (England) recently used troops to break a strike. Another (Russia) destroyed the importance of the very unions which had helped it to power, and, boasting of its love for the common man, cut the value of his money by nine-tenths, without warning.

Look out for all those promises of something for nothing. They don't put that cheese in the trap just because somebody loves mice..

No government, no individual, can give you anything worth having for long. The only thing you'll ever have and keep is what you yourself produce. And then you have your self-respect, too.

Date 1951

175 years ago with a handful of people America wrung freedom and independence from what was then the greatest nation in the world.

Today we have that power and responsibility — we produce more steel, more oil, more aluminum, more electricity than any other country in the world.

It is our freedom, our self-respect, our American system that does it. Then why fear a system that has failed in everything it has attempted, everything in which our system has succeeded?

The only thing we have to be afraid of is —losing this system that made us strong. Of course our enemies try to destroy our system by destroying our faith in it. America became great by letting Americans become great — giving every man, woman and child the chance to go as far as his energy, productivity, ambition let him. That inevitably made millionaires — who made millions of jobs for others in the process of making millions of dollars for themselves.

Laws and taxes which destroy that sort of growth and greatness are exactly what communists want. Destroy opportunity for profit and you destroy ambition. Destroy opportunity for profit and you destroy ambition. Destroy ambition and you destroy America.

Our enemies know that, but hope you won't realize it or do anything about it until destructive tax laws make it to late.

Thomas Jefferson quotes:

1. "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. "

2. "It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world."

3. "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

4. "My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."

5. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."

6. "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

7. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

8. "To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which He disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."

9. "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

"Are we at last brought to such an humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defense? Where is the difference between having our arms under our own possession and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?"

  –  Patrick Henry

"...Guerillas are irregulars they operate not from their own innate strength, but by striking at the enemy's weakness. The guerilla's first job is to remain annyomous, to live among the enemy in order to discover his weakness.

When the guerrilla learns the weakness, he irritates it. He does not overwhelm it, rather he dodges in and out, in a way that permits him to remain anonymous. A guerilla fighter is ruthless, has no respect for battle courtesies. He agitates the enemy.

Guerillas are subordinate to conventional forces. Where conventional forces stake victory or defeat on a plan for battle, guerrilla do not have a legacy of battle conventions. And because of this, guerilla movements dispositions and actions do not follow any book. The usual problems of supply, the logistics of troop movement, the recruiting and training of guerillas are spontaneous acts which, ideally, can swell into unorthodox offensive action, sudden momentary, but deadly; as quickly as it appears, it can burrow back into a pocket of anonymity.

As a guerrilla becomes more self-sufficient and develops confidence in his ability to conduct effective operations safely behind enemy lines, he begins to double , then treble his force and its scope of operations. His activities, in order to remain guerrilla in nature, must always adhere to the principle that he can never commit himself to action until all the odds favor him. The guerrilla is not concerned with immediate victory. He believes in a slow accumulation of surprises that irritate the enemy. To accomplish out of which a guerilla will build is own strength besides patience, is the equal necessity of wiliness, of invisibility when he travels, and of a courage which is not disturbed by a long period of time behind enemy lines."

General William "Ray" Peers AUS ,(1914-1984) Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Detachment 101 unit's operations and training officer and commander, which carried out guerrilla operations against the Japanese in the China Burma India Theater of World War II. In 1945, he then became commander of all OSS operations in China south of the Yangtze River where he personally led a Nationalist Chinese parachute-commando unit into Nanking , securing the former Chinese capital from the Japanese and Communist Chinese before the armistice. After WWII, Peers joined CIA establishing the agency's first training program . Later commanding clandestine and conventioal forces during the Korean and Vietnam war.

Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard 'round the world."

Pictures?  No Pictures?

Two extremes are emerging behind what on the surface appears to be a simple issue - that of how to appropriately protect the privacy of the families and friends of deceased American service personnel. The issue is whether members of the media will be granted access when military remains arrive at U.S. installations to take pictures. It sounds benign, but two passionate movements have been battling over the issue. On one side, many American Warriors deploying to fight for their nation are angered that photos of their corpses could end up on a terrorism-advocating website as a "trophy shot". On the other side, citizens who disagree with our nation's participation in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, feel the media should be able to publicize images of dead Americans to sway public opinion against the war effort. While many Americans have very different opinion or none at all, these two groups have emerged as prevalent in the fight.

The ability of the media to cover the return of military remains at ports of entry was once permitted but was halted by the Pentagon during the First Gulf War, on Feb 2, 1991. A few exceptions were made to the rule, such as the 1998 Embassy Bombings and the 2000 USS Cole Bombing. However, on February 26, 2009, the Secretary of Defense repealed the policy after a review directed by the Commander-in-Chief. The new policy leaves it up to the individual families to decide if they will allow media coverage of the return of their loved ones' remains.

The "Pics OK" group sees the policy reversal as a victory. Many see it as freedom of the press having been restored, seeing the military as a group concealing their activities and hiding the truth of their actions and the horrors of war. Many feel it is a way of honoring the fallen heroes while taking steps to influence the public so no more of our warriors will have to fall in service of the nation.

The "No Pics" group has silently bitten their lips, as military personnel are expected to do, but have voiced outrage at the policy behind closed doors. American Warriors have witnessed media coverage of the burned corpses of American contractors hung over a bridge in twisted triumph, viewed terrorist beheadings of American captives, and seen video of terrorists driving car bombs into their comrade's vehicles on the internet. After this, many service personnel are outraged at the thought of American journalists contributing to the enemy's propaganda effort.

Short of the argument against proliferating enemy "trophy shots," many American Warriors are disheartened that in the days following their having made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, someone will take an image of their remains and use it for a political position. Worse, that it is probably opposite of his or her own, and of the cause for which he or she just sacrificed his or her life.

Rather than burden their families with the decision during their time of anguish, some personnel have opted to state their feelings on whether or not they wish to have the media photograph their remains during return. They mark themselves in much the same way as they do with their blood type and religious preference. These patches that are affixed to bags and packs (not worn on the uniform) read "NO PICS" or "PICS OK".

Times being what they are, always be prepared
whether you're operational or going to a family picnic...

Select a decent Knife
Other than a rock, the knife is man's most basic tool. It has far more uses than a rock and is easier to pack and carry. There are literally thousands of decent choices out there today. Need help in making the right choice? Want multifunction from your knife? Select a real (Victorinox or Wenger) Swiss Army Knife or a quality made multitool by Leatherman or Victorinox. Can't carry a blade because of work rules or public transportation rules? Victorinox and Leatherman also offer up several models without the knife blade.

Select a long lasting LED Flashlight
Night falls and buildings get dark with the lights out. Not being blessed with night vision, humans typically need light to avoid the dangers of the darkness. A simple 1/4 ounce Photon on your keyring can put out hours of useable light sufficient to traverse a set of stairs or an unknown trail. Got more space available? Look at offerings by SureFire, Fenix, Streamlight, Inova and the hosts of other decent manufacturers available. A decent flashlight also makes a great night time signaling device.

Select a Whistle you can depend on
A whistle can signal distress and attract help much more efficiently than your voice. Need help selecting a whistle? Read my "Who gives a Toot" article on this site. That article will be continuously updated as more whistles become available for testing.

Add some bandaids to your kit or wallet
Want to get fancy? Use the bandaids that come impregnated with antibiotic. (Make sure you don't use the antibiotic bandaids if you or the victim is allergic to antibiotics.)

Add a floss card to your kit or wallet
Tape onto the floss card a threader and a couple needles - instant cordage and instant sewing kit. Throw a few medium safety pins wherever you find available space.

Add in a small roll of or pocket pack piece of duct tape
Duct tape can fix anything - just ask Care's Dad.

If you're traveling rural areas
Add in a reliable means of fire-starting, some tinder, a means of collecting water and some water purification tablets.

Throw a couple bandanas into a pocket
A bandana can be a prefilter strainer for questionable water, a bandage, a sling, a dust mask, and any one of a dozen other uses.

Add a small prytool to your key ring or kit
Such a tool is an invalueable aid in opening a stuck door or window and can be used for a host of other chores including digging through sheetrock or prying open a clam.

Add a waterproof "Spy-Capsule"
A container containing at least a couple days worth of personal medications to your kit or keyring.

Don't bring pistol caliber weapons to the fight if you have the option of using a rifle...

The following highlights the importance of shot placement and why one shot, even to the head won’t necessarily stop a person (they had even tried less lethal bean bag rounds before shooting him with a 9mm pistol round).

Man accused of killing wife is still in jail

Published on Wednesday, Jan 21, 2009

Beacon Journal staff report

The man accused of shooting his estranged wife and holding their son hostage from police remains jailed. Daniel Tice, 32, appeared in Akron Municipal Court Tuesday morning still showing the gunshot wound that ended an eight-hour standoff with police this month. He is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting death of his wife, Brandi Tice, 28. Daniel Tice was shot by police once in the forehead while he was holed up in the basement of his Martha Avenue home. The shot fractured his skull. Tice underwent surgery at Akron City Hospital and was taken Friday to the Summit County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond set by visiting Judge Michael McNulty. Family members say Tice was angered over his wife's affair with a family member and her demand for a divorce. He is accused of shooting his wife in the living room, taking his son and holding police at bay for eight hours. His 4-year-old son was not harmed. The couple's two daughters, 8 and 7, were kept from the home when they returned from school. SWAT members worked their way inside the home and shot Tice with an MP5 assault rifle after failing to subdue the 6-foot-1, 280-pound man with nonlethal bean bags fired from a gun.

Regarding the 9 mm hit—the point of aim is a bit too high and looks like it may be on a curved portion of the skull. You actually want to target the eye-sockets, especially with a handgun round to avoid projectile deflection from the skull (this happens more frequently than people expect).

Lessons In Survival

The science that explains why elite military forces bounce back faster than the rest of us.

By Ben Sherwood | NEWSWEEK

In a laboratory, it's extremely difficult to study why some people are better at bouncing back than others because it's so hard to simulate the real stresses and strains of life. Scientists can show people scary pictures or movies to trigger their reactions and measure how they recover, but it's hardly the same as a mugger in an alley or a grizzly bear on a hiking trail. Dr. Andy Morgan of Yale Medical School set out to find a real-world laboratory where he could watch people under incredible stress in reasonably controlled conditions.

He ended up in southeastern North Carolina at Fort Bragg, home of the Army's elite Airborne and Special Forces. This is where the Army's renowned survival school is located. It's also where they believe in something called stress inoculation. Like vaccines, a small challenge or dose of a virus in your system prepares and defends you against a bigger challenge. In other words, they expose you to pressure and suffering in training so you'll build up your immunity. It's a kind of classic psychological conditioning: the more shocks to your system, the more you're able to withstand.

Unsung War Hero Gets Recognition

CBS Evening News: Vietnam War Soldier Shares Remarkable Story On Medal Of Honor Day

by David Martin (CBS)

Robert Howard was the toughest, bravest cat in the jungle, but he deserved a better war than Vietnam. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor three times for three separate operations behind enemy lines.

But, as CBS News correspondent David Martin reports, when President Nixon finally awarded him the nation's highest honor, the ceremony was actually delayed by anti-war protests. He was a war hero at a time when Americans didn't believe in either the war or its heroes. He was wounded 14 times and has no business being alive.

"Here I come face-to-face with a platoon of enemy soldiers and so I'm standing with my weapon like this, and they fire directly at me and I fell backwards like this, and I didn't get killed," Howard explained.

That was just the beginning of the fire fight for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. It ended when, out of ammunition, he called in a 2,000-pound bomb.

"I said 'I want you to put it right on our position'," Howard said. "It blew us and the enemy up. Next thing I know, we're still alive."

He's still picking shrapnel out of his body.

Are anti-gunners coordinating with Obama administration to push semi-auto ban?

Just as anti-gunners accused the Bush administration of working with the gun rights organizations, is the Obama administration coordinating with the gun prohibition lobby in an effort to boost public pressure to revive the ban on so-called "assault weapons?"

There is growing suspicion in the firearms community that it is no coincidence the administration is ramping up the rhetoric about this country's "shared responsibility" for the bloody drug war raging in northern Mexico, while "Obama-friendly" news organizations lend emphasis to renewing the semi-auto ban. At the same time, the anti-gun Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has just released a report called Exporting Violence: How Our Weak Gun Laws Arm Criminals in Mexico and America.

Weapons ban urged after Oakland killings

One week after four Oakland police officers were gunned down by a semi-automatic weapon, there's a new plan asking the federal government to ban assault weapons. State and local officials are pushing for a crackdown on these weapons.

An AK-47 assault rifle was used to kill the four Oakland police officers last Saturday. California has the toughest ban on assault weapons in the nation. But it doesn't stop people from buying in other states.

"We're calling on the Congress to remake gun control a top priority now, and to reauthorize the assault weapons ban right away," said L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

America's Guns in Mexico....... Riiiiiiight!

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated just last week that America is responsible for Mexico's heavily-armed drug gangs. I say, BS!

by Right Rev. Rowland
(conservative libertarian)
Sunday, March 29, 2009

So Hillary says it's our fault that the Mexican drug cartels are so heavily-armed that they are holding their own against the Mexican military. She even stated that guns purchased in America were showing up in Mexico because of our lax gun laws. Mexico, she said, has much stricter gun laws.

Yes, Mexico has very strict gun laws. As a matter of fact, unless you are some sort of law enforcement or government official or agent, it is illegal for you to carry guns in Mexico. Citizens and naturalized immigrants can own guns in their homes, but the types are very restricted. There is an excellent summary of Mexican gun regulations here. The problem is, there are guns everywhere in Mexico.

Having lived 16 years of my life in Mexico, I know many Mexican citizens who have firearms not in compliance with their federal laws. I didn't meet any of them that smuggled them from America. Black markets have always existed and always will. Even prisons can't keep contraband out.

Afghan Commandos destroy two weapons caches in Herat

KABUL, Afghanistan (Courtesy of USFOR-A Public Affairs, March 26, 2009) — Elite Soldiers from the 207th Afghan Commando Corps, assisted by Coalition forces, discovered and destroyed two weapons caches while on a combat reconnaissance patrol in Shindand district, Herat province, March 24.

Concerned local villagers stopped the patrol and directed the Commandos to the location of two weapons and ordnance caches in a nearby area. The Commandos unearthed the first cache, which was buried less than two feet deep in a dried-up riverbed near a well-traveled road. The cache consisted of 10 mortar rounds, seven cases of 30mm anti-aircraft rounds, one 100mm projectile, nine rocket fuses and four grenades.

The second cache, located 10 kilometers away from the first cache, contained 20 rocket-propelled grenades, 30 sabot rounds, eight Russian smoke canisters and two cases of 20mm anti-aircraft rounds.

The contents of both caches were safely destroyed by the Commandos, saving many innocent human lives.

A Soldier's Viewpoint on Surviving Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Attacks

From: SFC Red Thomas (Ret)
Armor Master Gunner
Mesa, AZ

Unlimited reproduction and distribution is authorized. Just give me credit for my work, and, keep in context.

Since the media has decided to scare everyone with predictions of chemical, biological, or nuclear warfare on our turf I decided to write a paper and keep things in their proper perspective. I am a retired military weapons, munitions, and training expert.

Lesson number one: In the mid 1990s there were a series of nerve gas attacks on crowded Japanese subway stations. Given perfect conditions for an attack less than 10% of the people there were injured (the injured were better in a few hours) and only one percent of the injured died.

60 Minutes once had a fellow telling us that one drop of nerve gas could kill a thousand people, well he didn't tell you the thousand dead people per drop was theoretical.

Drill Sergeants exaggerate how terrible this stuff was to keep the recruits awake in class (I know this because I was a Drill Sergeant too). Forget everything you've ever seen on TV, in the movies, or read in a novel about this stuff, it was all a lie (read this sentence again out loud!). These weapons are about terror, if you remain calm, you will probably not die. This is far less scary than the media and their "Experts," make it sound.

Chemical Weapons

Chemical weapons are categorized as nerve, blood, blister, and Incapacitating agents. Contrary to the hype of reporters and politicians they are not weapons of mass destruction they are "area denial," and terror weapons that don't destroy anything. When you leave the area you almost always leave the risk. That's the difference; you can leave the area and the risk but soldiers may have to stay put and sit through it and that's why they need all that spiffy gear.

Mexico rules out joint border patrols with U.S.

By Rosalba O'Brien

LONDON (Reuters) — Mexico will cooperate with the United States in sharing intelligence to fight drug trafficking but does not plan joint patrols with U.S. forces, President Felipe Calderon said Monday.

"We do have to work together but that does not imply the joint participation in military operations or even a joint participation of law enforcement agents," Calderon said at a press conference during a state visit to London.

The Mexican president said forces from both sides of the border should share information to try to stem the flow of illegal drugs and tackle the gangs who supply them.

The United States has stepped up security on the border with Mexico after new President Barack Obama put Mexico's drug war high on his agenda.

Crushing the drug cartels, who arm themselves with smuggled U.S. weapons and leave slain rivals in public streets, has become the biggest test of Calderon's presidency as the bloodshed rattles investors and tourists.

Fugitive US marshal found dead in Mexico

WASHINGTON -- Federal authorities say a deputy U.S. marshal wanted for allegedly stealing a government shotgun has been found dead in Mexico.

A spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service says Deputy Vincent Bustamante was found dead Wednesday in Juarez.

Bustamante had been a fugitive since March 18 when he failed to show up for a court date in El Paso, Texas. He was placed on modified duty status after a pawnbroker called to report Bustamante had pawned a government shotgun.

A law enforcement official says Bustamante was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

Obama's Sights on Second Amendment

By Jan LaRue

While campaigning for the U.S. Senate and then the presidency, Barack Obama said he believed in the individual right to bear arms. Those aware of his record and rhetoric reckoned he was referring to his wife's penchant for sleeveless attire, not the Second Amendment.

During his 2004 run for the Senate, Obama said

"I think that the Second Amendment means something. I think that if the government were to confiscate everybody's guns unilaterally that I think that would be subject to constitutional challenge."

No kidding.

He didn't say it would be unconstitutional, just "subject to constitutional challenge." Nor did he express any opposition.

Military demands details on soldiers' private guns

By Bob Unruh

2009 WorldNetDaily

A military commander at Fort Campbell in Kentucky demanded his soldiers give him the registration numbers of any guns they own privately and then reveal where they are stored.

The order was stopped, according to base officials, when it was discovered the commander was not "acting within his authority."

The original order was issued on the letterhead of Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment and said effective March 11, any soldier with a "privately owned weapon" was required to submit the information, along with any information about any concealed carry permit the soldier may have, and what state issued the permit.

Feds undercut ammo supply

But Defense policy reversed after intervention by 2 Montana senators

By Drew Zahn

2009 WorldNetDaily

Responding to two Democratic senators representing outraged private gun owners, the Department of Defense announced last night it has scrapped a new policy that would deplete the supply of ammunition by requiring destruction of fired military cartridge brass.

The policy already had taken a bite out of the nation's stressed ammunition supply, leaving arms dealers scrambling to find ammo for private gun owners.

Mark Cunningham, a legislative affairs representative with the Defense Logistics Agency, explained in an e-mail last night to the office of Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., that the Department of Defense had placed small arms cartridge cases on its list of sensitive munitions items as part of an overall effort to ensure national security is not jeopardized in the sale of any Defense property.

The small arms cases were identified as a senstive item and were held pending review of policy, he said.

"Upon review, the Defense Logistics Agency has determined the cartridge cases could be appropriately placed in a category of government property allowing for their release for sale," Cunningham wrote.

Why Rush Limbaugh Is Good for the Republicans

Obama aides Rahm Emanuel and Robert Gibbs knew what they were doing when they declared Rush Limbaugh the leader of the Republican opposition. They were putting Republican politicians in a trap. Repudiating Limbaugh would mean alienating millions of conservatives and declaring Limbaugh's plainspoken conservatism - which many of those politicians share - outside the lines of the national debate. But neither could Republicans allow the insinuation that they take orders from a radio host stand. If voters got that impression, they would look weak. Worse, the polls show more people dislike Limbaugh than like him.

The Republicans escaped this trap by saying that the White House was talking about Limbaugh in order to avoid talking about Obama's failure to come up with a financial-rescue plan. But now one Limbaugh controversy has been replaced by another. Instead of squabbling with Democrats about him, Republicans are arguing with each other. The subject of the dispute: Does Limbaugh help spread conservatism among Americans - or turn them off from it? (Read "Criticizing Rush Limbaugh: Over the Line?")

Border violence leads to armor-plated vehicles

By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer

SAN ANTONIO — The drug violence in Mexico has gotten so bad that booming numbers of Mexican and American professionals are having their cars fitted with armor plates, bulletproof glass and James Bond-style gadgets such as electrified door handles and push-button smokescreens.

Until recently, it was mostly movie stars, business moguls and politicians who took such precautions. But now, industry officials say, the customers include factory owners, doctors, newspaper publishers and others who have business on both sides of the border and fear killings, kidnappings and carjackings by drug dealers or people in their debt.

The customers "don't have to be very big," said Mark Burton, CEO of International Armoring Corp. of Ogden, Utah. "This becomes almost a necessity."

UK survivor of WWI trenches given French honor

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer

LONDON — The last British survivor of World War I's grinding trench warfare was made an officer of the French Legion of Honor on Monday.

French Ambassador Maurice Gourdault-Montagne awarded 110-year-old Harry Patch the medal at a ceremony in Patch's nursing home in Wells, 120 miles (190 kilometers) west of London, Britain's Ministry of Defense said in a statement. Patch, who served as a machine-gunner in the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele, told Gourdault-Montagne he was proud of the honor.

"Ambassador, I greatly appreciate the way your people respect the memory of those who fell, irrespective of the uniform they wore," he said in a raspy, deliberate voice. "I will wear this medal with great pride and when I eventually rejoin my mates it will be displayed in my regimental museum as a permanent reminder of the kindness of the people of France."

Patch is one of only two surviving British veterans of World War I, according to the Ministry of Defense. The second, 112-year-old Henry Allingham, served as an airman.

Swiss Face Pump-Action Ban

Radical anti-gun activists in this country have already called for pump-action firearms to be banned as "assault weapons." Bills to that effect, based on draft legislation developed by the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence, have been introduced at the state level, and Donna Dees-Thomases of the Brady Campaign-affiliated Million Mom March, a close friend of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has advocated a pump-action ban as well.

Now, the so-called Group for a Switzerland Without an Army-a coalition of pacifists, socialists, and religious groups that in 1989 forced a national referendum on abolishing Switzerland's army-and got 36 percent of the vote-is pushing for a referendum to ban pump-actions, along with prohibiting the country's citizen soldiers from keeping their service rifles and pistols at home, prohibiting the private acquisition of firearms by individuals who do not show a "need," prohibiting the private possession of "unused" firearms, and requiring the registration of remaining firearms in private hands.

According to the group, "2.4 million firearms in private hands is 2.4 million too many," and "we must finally break with the fatal manliness-ideal of 'defense-capable is honor.'"

Suzanna Gratia-Hupp: What the Second Amendment is REALLY For

I have no doubt all who believe in the 2nd amendment will truly respect this young ladies testimony before a panel of elected jerks who impose their beliefs on us.

This gal really tells it like it really is and isn't a bit afraid of the Congressional Committee she's in front of. Her words are simple but her message is elegant, clear and powerful.

Legitimate Gun Owners Held responsible for Mexican Drug Cartel Violence

Wednesday, during a press conference trumpeting the arrest of 700 in connection with Mexican drug cartels, Attorney General Eric Holder rolled out the Obama administration's position that the so-called "assault weapons ban" should be improved and re-instituted, this time permanently.

Holder said he felt the "AWB", closing of the so-called "gun show loophole" and banning of "cop-killer bullets" would all be allowed under the Supreme Court's Heller Decision last year. The allegedly-historic Heller ruling reasserting the individual right to own a weapon under the Second Amendment. Obviously The Supreme Court's decision carries little significance with the current Administration. The Assault Weapons Ban put into place in 1994 by then-President Clinton, contained what the anti-gun groups felt were "strategic mistakes" which they have 'corrected' in the proposal ban.

This new AWB, as we've written many times in the past, will be permanent and will not contain the expiration/sunset clause and will extend far beyond the nineteen types of "military-style" guns and "high-capacity" magazines - containing more than ten rounds.

Holder, in an attempt to mislead the public, a trait indicative of this new administration, told reporters that - echoing Obama's campaign line - there were "just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make." Those "few gun-related changes" would include the reinstitution of the "ban on the sale of assault weapons" and the closing of the gun-show loophole and ban on certain classes of bullets.

"The problem of criminals breaking the law to acquire firearms and illegally smuggling them across the border is not remedied by legislation that would violate the rights of Americans to own semi-automatic firearms," said Steve Sanetti, president of National Shooting Sports Foundation, "These types of firearms, which are erroneously called 'assault weapons,' are used by millions of Americans for hunting, sporting and personal defense purposes. We can only conclude that certain officials are waiting for any politically advantageous excuse to announce the intention to seek a new ban on sporting rifles, a ban that would break the president's campaign promise to gun owners that 'I'm not going to take away your guns.'"

Despite House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi's backing away from a new gun ban ("On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now," said Pelosi) there's not much curtailing the hubris of the Obama administration.

"It appears gun owners' fears were well-founded given Attorney General Holder's comment that the Obama Administration will seek new restrictions on gun owners," said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel in a statement released yesterday by the industry organization.

Despite Madame Pelosi's protestations for reason, Democratic officials tell me they don't believe there is any slowing of the administration because their position really is that "a crisis is too-good an opportunity to waste". How despicable can these bottom feeders get, but to blame law abiding citizens for Drug Cartel violence?

The 'Assault Weapons Ban resurrection and implementation - is being considered as a foregone conclusion and have already moved into the second phase of a strategy that is designed to bring the United States into compliance with the "enlightened" position on firearms ownership as set forth the United Nations. Obama has the House and the Senate majorities and the anti-Second Amendment crowd fully intend to abuse it.

WH Sounds Retreat on Vet Health Care Plan

Knight Ridder

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration on Wednesday abandoned a controversial plan to make veterans use private insurance to pay for costly treatments of combat-related injuries.

Stung by the angry reaction to the proposal, the administration made the decision after a meeting between officials from 11 veterans advocacy groups and top White House officials.

"Our voices were heard," said Norbert Ryan, the president of the Military Officers Association of America. "They made the right decision on this."

The plan would have reversed a longstanding policy of providing government health coverage for all service-related injuries. Few details emerged beyond its reported savings of $540 million, however.

Justice for Victims of the Weather Underground

by Cliff Kincaid

WASHINGTON, D.C.- A live version of "Forensic Files" hits Washington, D.C. on March 12, as pressure mounts for an expanded probe of Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, and their alleged roles in the 1970 bombing murder of a San Francisco policeman. Ayers and Dohrn, now university professors, were members of a communist terrorist gang called the Weather Underground during the 1960s and 1970s whose aim was to support communist regimes and anti-American movements around the world and destroy the United States. The group received terrorist training in Communist Cuba and was advised by Soviet and Cuban intelligence agents.

A former FBI informant, a retired San Francisco policeman, a veteran congressional investigator, and an internationally-renown researcher into extremist movements will be appearing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to urge federal authorities to get to the bottom of what really happened on February 16, 1970, when a bomb filled with heavy metal staples exploded and ripped through the body of San Francisco Police Sergeant Brian V. McDonnell at the Park Station police headquarters. McDonnell was in the hospital for two days, bleeding from his wounds, before he finally died.

The bombing was listed by the FBI as the work of the Weather Underground, but Ayers and Dohrn, two of its top members, never claimed credit for the blast. They have tried to insist over the years that their bombs never hurt or killed anyone, except their own members. However, the consistent testimony of former FBI informant Larry Grathwohl, who participated in meetings with Ayers, has been that Ayers told him that Dohrn planted the bomb.

PANZER KASERNE, Germany (Courtesy of SOCEUR Public Affairs, March 24, 2009) - "Duty, Honor, Country: those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be." General Douglas MacArthur relayed this phrase to the corps of cadets during a speech at the U.S. Military Academy on May 12, 1962.

Today, Capt. Andrew Burgess, a Special Forces officer assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Panzer Kaserne, Germany, lives the phrase.

The Department of the Army announced the 2008 MacArthur Leadership Awardees on Mar. 6, 2009. Burgess was selected as one of 13 active duty commissioned company grade officers from throughout the Army to receive the honor.

What's so Important about April 19, 1775?

The day prior, an "unimpeachable source" (believed to be British General Gage's American-born wife) informed Dr. Joseph Warren that British troops would deploy for Concord the night of April 18, in order to seize Colonial military supplies believed to be stored there. This wasn't the first time they had done so—in September of the previous year they had seized 250 barrels of gunpowder from the Massachusetts Provincial Powder House in Charlestown.

The route the British planned to take was not initially known: they might take boats from Boston to a shorter northern route; or they might take the land route, but this was 5 miles longer. The increased distance meant a substantially longer trip for marching troops, who might carry up to 100 pounds of equipment.

That night, longboats from the British ships Boyne and Somerset began to take on British troops for their transfer to the transfer to the staging area for the northern route. Billy Dawes was sent via the southern route to warn John Hancock and Sam Adams that the British were to march on Concord, the current location of these 2 notorious agitators.

Paul Revere conferred with other Sons of Liberty to have the pre-arranged signal displayed via lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church: one if by land, two if by sea. Across the Charles River, posted watchers received and immediately began to spread the message.

About 10 p.m., Revere and 2 others rowed past the HMS Somerset to Charlestown. There, his famous ride began.

"The Regulars are out!"
