Dave's Message

The Warrior
Power and Conflict

"Rank does not confer privilege or give power. It imposes responsibility."

- Louis

"Men in Great Place are thrice Servants: of the Sovereign or State; Servants of Fame; and Servants of Business etc. It is strange desire to seek Power and to lose Liberty."

- Sir Francis Bacon

This is an excerpt from Steven Pressfield's "The Afghan Campaign" that will give us a good overview of what abuse of authority is all about:

"...Lucas's last words to his friend Corporal Matthias were if anything should happen to me what ever it is promise me you will tell the truth. Lucas had a loyalty to the truth and constantly commented on how things that occurred on the battlefield were manipulated to coerce the thinking of everyone.

Corporal Matthias in Alexander the Great's Army is pressured to sign a false statement contrived in an effort to bring an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.

The Headquarters lieutenant interviews me. This is in the same tent where he showed me Lucas's notebook. He congratulates me and our company on our part in this glorious victory. I am to be decorated and promoted Sergeant. Bonuses for all. Then he sets a document on the table before me. I am to read and sign it.

"You do read, Corporal?"

I regard him. "Barely."

The scroll is a report of the action against Spitamenes. It is accurate within reason. Except at the finish, where it recounts the deaths of Lucas, Agathocles, and the journalist Costas. All are given heroic demises, in combat on the field.

"That isn't how it happened," I say.

The ice storm booms against the sailcloth of the tent. Coals in the brazier flare with the gale.

The lieutenant dismisses my statement. "All your mates have signed it."

He shows me Flag's mark, and Stephanos's and the two lieutenants, and our officers all the way to Bullock.

"Lucas and the others were killed," I say, "days earlier, on the prairie. Run down by Afghan cavalry and butchered."

"Please," says the lieutenant. "Make your mark."

Why, I ask, is it even necessary for me to sign? I'm only a corporal. Who cares what I say?

"Headquarters wants marks from all."

If it hadn't been so bitter cold, if I hadn't been so exhausted, I might have scrawled my sign. Narik ta? What difference does it make? But the lieutenant's manner puts my back up. With emotion I recount the capture of Spitamenes' son on the steppe. I describe Agathocles' insistence on delivering the prisoner to the column at once, and how Costas the correspondent and my friend Lucas volunteered to join the party that set off alone into the void. "The enemy caught them and massacred them. That's what happened."

"Will you sign, Corporal?"

I spend the morning frozen in the supply tent.

I understand Command's predicament. I understand its solution. The phony report will be sent home to Macedon; it will be accepted without hesitation. Headquarters will publish it here throughout the army. No one who has signed it can then call it false. The Bactrians and Sogdians will be enrolled in the corps; they will bring in their cousins and brothers. It's sound strategy. If I were a staff officer, I'd contrive it too.

But I still won't sign.

One of the guards set over me is an Arcadian mercenary. Polemon is his name, a good fellow; I know him from the city-building at Kandahar. He sneaks me some stew and half a jar of wine. "What's the bone?" he asks. Why am I being so stubborn? I tell him about Lucas, how the truth meant everything to him.

"Mate, you don't know how deep you're in it. These fuckers aren't dogging around."

Yes, I say. "I'm sure they've got a story made up about me too." "Damn right they have. And I'll sign it. We all will."

Exhaustion has shattered me, but I can't sleep. In my mind I see Lucas eyes. I can't let him down. I steel myself for the worst that can be thrown at me. I will not prove false to my friend.

By midmorning the camp is boiling with action. Spitamenes' trail has been picked up. Orders are being issued. Alexander's brigades will push off by noon. Our company will rejoin its division. Everyone but me. This is the keenest torture yet. I cannot be left behind!

I am kicked out of the supply tent, so its contents can be broken down into mule-loads for the march out. Back in the first tent, I can hear my mates outside, rigging up. I can't stand it. New guards are posted over me. I'm supposed to sit and say nothing, but my jailers let up when Flag and Stephanos, mounted to move out, rein outside. "Sign," says Flag, with a look that communicates, "It's all rubbish anyway." Stephanos taps his skull, meaning don't be such a hardhead.

I am taken away again. This time to the king's precinct. Another tent, bigger, with compartments. I stew through midday. Where is my horse? Has she been taken care of?

The captain springs to his feet. I brace at rigid attention. The king comes all the way in. He entreats our pardon for entering unannounced. He has overheard our words from outside; he could not help himself. "Stand easy, Corporal."

Alexander comes around front, where I can see him.

Our lord wears a plain winter cloak with no breastplate and no insignia save a single Gold Lion as a shoulder clasp. "The brigades move out in an hour. Forgive me if I don't have much time."

I am struck by how worn he looks. The contrast to his youthfulness, when we replacements first saw him two years ago, is overwhelming. He is only twenty-eight. Up close he looks forty. His skin is abraded to leather by sun and wind. His honey-colored hair holds streaks of silver. He dismisses the captain but does not sit himself, nor indicate that I may.

"I know what it means to lose a friend," he says, "and in such a ghastly manner. I respect you courage in defying an order that seems too unjust, and I understand that promise of reward offends you sense of honor."

The chamber is close, no bigger than an eight-man tent, with nothing in it but a table, three chairs, and a stand for maps and charts.

"But you must understand what is at stake. We have a chance now to end this war, a chance that will not endure. Hours count. Amnesty must be extended to our Bactrian and Sogdian captives as quickly as possible, so it looks like a gesture of spirit and generosity, not a calculated act of politics."

I am pierced to the heart by this token of our lord to address, as he would a commander of stature, a soldier of such mean rank.

"This is what war is," says Alexander. "Glory has fled. One searches in vain for honor. We've all done things we're ashamed of. Even victory as Aeschylus says, in whose august glow all felonies are effaced. Is not the same in this war. What remains? To prevent the needless waste of lives. Too many good men have perished without cause. More will join them if we don't make this peace now."

He straightens and meets my eye.

"I rescind the Captain's offer of promotion and reward. It's an insult to your honor. Nor will I coerce you, Matthias, to take an action that runs counter to your code. Proceed as your conscience dictates. I shall take no measures against you, now or ever, nor will I permit any to be taken by others. Nothing is nobler than the love of friend for friend. Let it go at that."

And he turns and exists.

Ten days later, near a scarp called by the Scythians Mana Karq, "Salt Bluffs," a detachment of Massagetae appear under a banner of truce and present themselves to a forward unit attached to Hephaestion's brigade, which comprises the right wing of the Macedonian northward thrust.

Their chiefs, the Massagetae claim, have Spitamenes' head.

They will deliver this trophy to Alexander, they declare, if he will call off his advance and accept their undertakings of friendship..."

- The Afghan Campaign,
Steven Pressfield

Alexander was one of the great captains of history not because he had great power, but because he understood power and how to use it.

"We have, I fear, confused power with greatness."

- Stewart Udall

"I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be."

- Thomas Jefferson

If Alexander had forced the Corporal [Matthias] to violate his integrity by signing that paper he would have lost the trust of the Corporal and his men and his loyal Army would become every man for himself and he would have no choice but to rule over them with abuse of power and authority. The way all tyrants rule.

All true warriors know that power is not a privilege, but a responsibility. The more power the more responsibility.

This brings us to this month's topic "Power and Conflict". Power is the most sought after thing in our universe. The struggle for power proceeded man in prehistoric conflicts and carried forward into human history. It is at the source of all conflicts. What is strange to me is that there are few that understand the use of power, wouldn't it be nice if power came with a field manual but of course it doesn't—so I hope in my attempt to define the use of power for you, you will understand it and as a consequence of understanding power you will grow in the knowledge of how power works and use this knowledge to preserve freedom.

First I will define power with the textbook definition, which goes something like this: Power refers broadly to any ability to effect change or exert control over people.

I prefer to define it this way: The ability to get what you want.

There are three systems that influence power in the world. Every use of power fits in one of these three systems with no exceptions.

1 Arrogance - this is where power is used for selfish self-indulgent purposes.

2 Hate - this is where power is used for vindictiveness and revenge to destroy.

3 Impersonal Love - this is where power is used with objective thought and humility free of emotion based on truths in the form of values and principles that will always remain a constant regardless of circumstances in our struggle to preserve freedom.

"Human conflict is governed by laws, and illuminated by principles. Although it is important to recognize uniqueness in each situation, we must also perceive similarity."

- Robert R. Leonard

If you noticed the first two require no knowledge they just come natural and feed off of bad emotions not thought. The third system of influence "Impersonal Love" requires great knowledge, self-discipline and capacity that are acquired only through learning and practice. To understand the power system of Impersonal Love I refer you to my newsletter "A Warrior Kings Love" this will enable you to understand the correct motivation and influence in wielding power as a warrior and leader.

There are countless uses of power but I feel by breaking the systems of influences of power into three groups makes it easier for us to understand and evaluate how power works in our lives.

The three influences of power allow us to self examine ourselves by selecting which system of influence we are operating in.

The Power of Arrogance

For example in arrogance are we inflating our importance through power, are we using power to self indulge in some lust for drugs, illicit sex, money, materialistic things, do we think we know better than everyone else and want to force people to do what we want them to do (this is self righteousness), do we want to force our deviant degenerate behaviors on others and their children by force etc., do we want what others have and use force to take that from them? This would be socialism or stealing, they're pretty much the same. I think you can see the possibilities are endless under the influence of arrogance and if you can be honest with yourself, which takes humility you can tell if you are operating in the system of arrogance.

The Power of Hate

For example in hate: Are you vindictive, envious, bitter, jealous and/or want revenge by using power to destroy the objects of your hate? This one is easier to see then arrogance.

The Power of Impersonal Love

For example impersonal love is when you have the power to control your emotions and use impersonal love to do what's right even when it's not what you want?

What power system of influence was Alexander the Great operating in when he met with the Corporal? "Impersonal love" he wanted the Corporal to sign that paper but instead he chose what was right over the abuse of power avoiding the consequences that would have undermined his authority. There are consequences to functioning in each of the power systems of influence, arrogance and hate bring negative consequences undermining freedom. And impersonal love brings positive consequences and manifests freedom. The biggest clue to what influence you are operating under comes when you look for a justification of your actions. When we have to justify things even if the motive is for good such as the intended purpose of the paper the Corporal would not sign you can bet you are operating in the system of arrogance or hate. Under impersonal love you do what is right because it is the right thing to do, and not have to justify things to convince yourself you operate with honor and integrity which is loyalty to the truth.

When we reject the truth we put our confidence in something weaker.

- LTC R.B. Thieme Jr., Ret. USAF

Power in and unto itself is not bad it is a tool that can be used correctly or incorrectly. For example power by force has legitimate uses to combat violence, crime, fight wars and self defense. Power by persuasion can be good or bad depending on what people are being persuaded to do. Empowerment falls under the law of volitional responsibility. You choose to do that whether it turns out good or bad. This is one of the harsh realities in life and to change that requires sacrifice of freedom and is an attempt to control volition and self determination.

Now I will categorize power into the three categories above. Remember the use of power in these methods can be for right purposes or for wrong purposes.

1.) Power by force - this is where people are forced to comply by force or the threat of force. This is the most common technique used by tyrants to control people. But is also necessary to combat violence. "The only way to combat violence is with greater violence." It is also the most persuasive way to win the peace.

2.) Power by persuasion - This is the ability to work with others to get a problem solved or something accomplished through cooperation. The best example of this was set by the authors of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Although they came with opposing views they were able to put together a very great document that is the basis for our freedom in this country. The trick here is to never compromise giving up ground in favor or to the advantage of false or evil ideologies. If you do this it will put you on the road to defeat. As much as persuasion was used to craft and adopt our Constitution and Bill of Rights it also has persuaded this country into a great loss of freedom for its people. Persuasion like anything else can be used to preserve freedom or take it away. We should never give in or compromise to what we know is wrong.

Character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion.

- Aristotle

People with no character can be easily persuaded using false promises appealing to selfish desires and ignorant people are easily deceived.

3 Empower - This is self-determination the ability to do something based on one's own abilities. This gives people the power to accomplish things that others may not or cannot. This use of power represents freedom to succeed or fail and is the basis for freedom. This is what we fight for. This is what made America great.

"It's an old adage that the way to be safe is never to be secure...each one of us requires the spur of insecurity to force us to do our best."

Harold W. Dodds

The American's Creed

The official creed of the United States of America was written in 1917 by William Tyler Page, adopted by an act of Congress, April 6, 1918.

"I believe in the United States of America, as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principals of freedom, equality (meaning equal opportunity absence of the interference of coercing forces such as government), justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes."

"I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies." -William Tyler

Much like the Pledge of Allegiance, the American Creed reflects American nationalism that can be seen as an opposition to the threat of Socialism Communism and liberal ideologies.

We will talk about power from the perspective of our culture in the United States and of the true warrior. Our culture is the culture of freedom and the true warrior fights for freedom. I have talked of it before but want to cover it again. Most people think the United States is a melting pot of many cultures and that is false thinking designed to undermine and destroy the United States. Our culture is of Freedom and a common language, which was the basis for creation of our nation. The one thing that united us and raised the United States to power is Freedom and with it comes values and principles associated with freedom, when we do not pass our heritage down to each generation and the immigrants coming to the United States and they do not assimilate into our culture of freedom and learn these values and principles they undermine our culture and country and become an enemy from within. If you recall through out history all great nations have always self destructed from within. What this tells us if we are to stay free we have a responsibility to preserve our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Freedom, and protect it by acting responsibly under the values and principles freedom was fostered in this country. If we do not we will continue to lose what freedom we have left.

Now with saying that we will resume with Power and Conflict.

The true warrior knows that power is at the source of all conflict. Does that mean that power is bad? "No." I will answer this further with the Principle of Power.

When power exceeds the need the result is conflict.

This principle of power sums it all up in a simple few words but the application of this principal is another story, many books could be written on the correct use of power but the principle stands and needs to be understood because it is the source of all conflict.

I now want to talk about the abuse of power in our country and the changes it has brought.

"Corporations have been enthroned ... An era of corruption in high places will follow and the money power will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudice of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands... and the Republic is destroyed."

- Abraham Lincoln

Change and Power

The word change was thrown around a lot in the past election year as if it were some kind of magic cure-all, but lets look at what has really changed in relation to the power of the government. The cry for change has been to stick our nose into ever ones business. On a personal level people unhappy with their lives or decisions want to reach out and fix what ever they think is wrong in our country and the world, and some how in the end it will come back and fix what is wrong in their own lives. We all need to solve our own problems and live our own lives not stick our noses into someone else's life.

Change is accomplished by giving more and more power to government both politicians and bureaucrats and this is what the power of change has brought to the United States. Every time something happens there is a call for more regulations to give the government more power. Simply put, people want to give up their freedom (responsibility) to the government, which enslaves us all to the government.

Government has stepped beyond its legitimate functions usurping the constitution and our Bill of Rights taxing and regulating industry out of existence in the U.S. Environmental activists and labor unions have destroyed freedom and industry ending our great industrial age where we demonstrated how freedom out competes the world and raised the standard of living so high that the people of the world came to the U.S. by the droves to live the American Dream. Change has given birth to Globalization.

There has been much debate about Globalization whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. I will attempt to settle this debate.

First lets define Globalization:

Globalization in its literal sense is the process of transformation of local phenomena into global ones. It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together. This process is a combination of economic, technological, sociocultural and political forces. Globalization is often used to refer to economic globalization, that is integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the spread of technology.

That's a mouth full I think simply put Globalization is the foundation for internationalism which is not good. Internationalism wants one world one government like the "Evil Empire" in Star Wars. This means globalization is a danger to the sovereignty of our country. All true Patriots are Nationalist and their loyalty is to our country. What can we do to stop it? The answer to that is easy the U.S. needs to become free again to out-compete the world.

I believe in Yankee ingenuity and freedom. I believe if the forces that brought a demise to our great industrial complex are put back in there rightful place America will thrive under freedom again developing its own natural resources of which are mind boggling. Free from government over regulation and taxation, free from ridiculous environmental activists that want us to give up quality of life to worship the earth and animals, who spread fear with the cry of the sky is falling Global Warming; the latest scam. In the 60s or 70s it was the ice age is coming, in the 80s it was the ozone layer, for me it is comical how everyone jumps on the band wagon in the name of supposed good driven by fear. But with a tragic cost to our nation and our way of life. There is no end to their imaginations of how to control people through deceit and fear. And last the labor unions with their greed driven agendas to control business causing business to fail in competitiveness. We have been brainwashed all our lives to think business is the big bad wolf but if it weren't for business there would be no opportunities and jobs as we know them today. Americans are a great people and if we cast off the chains and shackles of big government, environmental activists and labor unions strangle hold off Americans, we will out compete the world freedom always wins in the contest to achieve prosperity for the many. And we will keep the fruits of our labor in our own country where it belongs to those who earned it.

The use of power falls into two categories right and wrong and the unknown area between commonly referred to as the grey area is only lack of knowledge to distinguish between the two, and here in the grey area decisions are a challenge to our knowledge and ability to discern which is the ability to combine things we know like pieces of a puzzle to see what fits and make our best judgment. As humans we are not perfect and we do not know everything so we will not always get it right so we give it our best shot and place our confidence in what we know to be true.

The key to the correct use of power lies in motivation. I will offer this formula to illustrate motivation and power.

The Principles of Motivation and Power

1). Something wrong with the right motivation = wrong.

2). Something right with the wrong motivation = wrong.

3). Something right with the right motivation = right.

This means the use of power requires two components the ability to discern right from wrong and correct motivation. Correct motivation only comes from impersonal love.

I. We must know how to discern right from wrong, which is learned starting at home with the parents. Unfortunately we live in a time where self-gratification is emphasized over values, principles, integrity and honor. We are busy scrambling around and scrounging for things we want, for things that feed our ego, and things we think are important in life. We fight for our place in the world, trying to get more power so we can throw our weight around and dangle people like puppets and we lose track of what is most important. Parents should focus on their responsibilities to bring up their kids to be responsible, self-motivated, self-disciplined, happy and content, with the values and principles to carry their generation. Each generation must stand on it's own. This is how freedom and our nation are preserved. We are always one generation away from failure.

"At the core, the American citizen soldiers knew the difference between right and wrong, and they didn't want to live in a world in which wrong prevailed. So they fought, and won, and we all of us, living and yet to be born, must be forever profoundly grateful."

- Citizen Soldiers

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character give him power."

- Abraham Lincoln

II. Motivation is the second component and we all are constantly challenged by our motivation. Motivation comes from the three systems that influence power, arrogance, hate and impersonal love. We must have humility to self evaluate our true motives if we are to use power correctly. The only correct motivation comes from impersonal love. I do not have the time to go into detail on each of these three systems that influence power but I will point out the obvious. A true warrior never has his eyes on things, others and self, he keeps his eyes on the ball, (what his responsibilities are). He operates from his personal code of honor. See "Warriors Personal Code of Honor".

He always gives his best and makes the most out of the circumstances he finds himself in. He aspires to truth and reality things greater then himself.

Always think of use of power in terms of right and wrong and learn humility to self evaluate your self to make sure you are always using power with the correct motivation Impersonal Love.

The key to the correct use of power always lies in the source of your motivation, which comes from arrogance, hate or impersonal love.

"Alexander the Great was a master of both aspects of warfare. One of the key reasons he conquered Persia is because he had an enlightened policy for the lands he won. To him, war was not just about beating the Persians. It was about building as well as destroying; ruling as well as defeating."

Let Us Know What You Think About Last Month's Newsletter

True that!!

It was in the "To Kill an American" article. I thought the article made a great point but, of course, that exaggeration takes away from it. Good estrimates are hard to come by but I'd guess that there certainly can't be more than 10 million Muslims in America and there are more than 30 million Muslims in Afghanistan.

This newsletter was a tremendous motivator for me. After reading, I went into some deep retrospect about my life. My future plans have now changed for the better. I hope it does the same for other members.

Keep up the great work.

They picked the wrong guy to try to rob

The photos in this piece come from Brazil, but a criminoso morta is just as good as a dead perp.

The guy with the Ameros is a hoaxer. Apart from the fact that his samples of the Amero paper money were printed on his own HP inkjet printer, there could never be anything to this proposal without decades of prep work. And the combined economy of the US, Canada, and Mexico would be dominated (~90%) by the US economy, so an Amero would inevitably be worth a dollar, and we'd be in charge of it.

Otherwise, this was a good email, as they always are, and I'm glad you're sending 'em.

This message is a keeper. please send more of them. very inspirational.

Dave, As always, kudos for some fair, fine, firm work,(Three qualities sadly lacking these days).

One thing I noticed most folks tend to do is address problems and symptoms instead of solutions and causes. In essence all our social problems stem from self centeredness and selfishness. In theological terms the ole seven deadlies apply...pride, anger, greed, lust, sloth, envy, and gluttony. Couch these in any other terms yet they remain the root causes of the problems. Addressing and correcting the seven deadlies in oneself and others helps lead to the seven P's (proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance). The REAL problem is to few pundits, profits, and preachers, wanna risk anything by first admitting our own shortcommings (sin) and relating that to others similar thinking and behavior. If I tell you I have battle with an excess of pride and can relate to the fears and insecurities that drive people, I'm a whole lot more likely to plant a good seed or water an existing one. To much fertilizer (re: Bullshit) like self actuation, self esteem, self gratification will kill any good seeds so all that grows are weeds. We are going the way of the past great civilizations....the new Rome falling to the barbarian masses calling for more bread and circuses. 911 only briefly got their attention then our government and media got right back to business. The opportunity to build our national cohesion and international influence has been squandered and lost to a large degree by the same corporate and political crowd passing the torch next week to the second black president (Remember that Clinton was the first). A day of mourning is in order and buy all means load up on weapons and ammo if you can find any. God bless America

Subject: Fw: A German's view of Islam

The author of this email is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well known and

well respected psychiatrist.

A German's View on Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates.

When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. "Very few people were true Nazis," he said, "but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care.

I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen.

Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come.

My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories."

We are told again and again by "experts" and "talking heads" that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace.

Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectra of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide.

It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave.

It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor- kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals.

It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the "silent majority," is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.

China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And, who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were "peace loving"?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our posers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:

Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.

As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.

So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world wide, read this and think about it, and send it on - before it's too late.

Emanuel Tanay, M.D

You know, I write a weekly column for my local newspaper. It is always inspiring to get your newsletter. I admit and plead guilty to shamelessly plagerizeing portions for my column. I hope it inspires others as it does me. My audience is not of the same makeupo but your words are for everyone. Thanks!

I just want to say that I can completely understand where you come from. Joining the Army a year ago and earning a spot in Army SOF has truly been a goal of mine. That said, I have never had a moment of down time and as my Platoon Sergeant says, "If you're not sweating, your bleeding. " Rings in my ears all day during training for our next (my first) deployment to Afghanistan. Keep up your news letters Dave, I truly enjoy reading them. No matter how old you may become, you will always be a battle-brother to me

All I can say, is, keep it coming, just awesome!

Thank you Mr Shapiro for that very enlightening article!!! You've got the point!! Only if these radical islam will read your article, two things will happen to them: 1) BE ENLIGHTENED, or 2) BE ENRAGED BECAUSE OF THE TRUTH!

I am not judgmental towards these Islams, they are also human like us, only that they are being misled by their faulty religious belief! Let us see the fact squarely. Let me take our country, the Philippines, for example. These radicals are wanting and demanding from the Philippine Government to give them the Mindanao Islands as an autonomous Region controlled by the Muslims. How in the world can they manage it when in fact, they have no ideas on how to make the country developed!!! Very few Muslims are knowledgeable on big business!!! most of them a making a living by peddling, selling pirated DVDs, CDs, and other small items for sale... What they only know is to terrorize (especially the militant groups) the people (non-muslims)! Yes, of course, there are Muslims who are good-natured, but because of their system of belief... I do not know what will happen to the world!!!

Mr. Shapiro, Thank you very much! Godspeed!

Great job! I would like to keep this article as a reminder.

I read your letters monthly. They are very well written and this one is clearly the best yet. I am a law enforcement officer and served with the Marines in the early 80's. As the Homeland Security Officer for my department, I have been fighting a constant battle with my upper management about adapting our training for the 21st century threat of terrorism, and in educating our command staff as to why the "big picture" plays such an important role in the daily duties of our officers. Since 9/11 I have held this position (under a different command, that has since retired)and in the past 4 years I have found myself to be regarded as a "chicken little" when it comes to planning, preparing, practicing and proactive intelligence gathering. Sad to say, but what I see happening within municipal law enforcement over these past years, has become quite alarming. Here in my state of Connecticut, and may be in particular, my own agency, law enforcement has become much more of ":just a job" than a life/career choice. I have over 25 years in law enforcement as a lifestyle/career, but I see the younger generation of officers coming on with such a poor attitude, I fear for the future of law enforcement.

I have taken this months message and printed it and tacked it to our community bulletin board for all to read. I have suggested that the command staff read through this as well. For the non-military minded, all I ask is that they replace the word "soldier" with the word "officer", and they can see how this months message hits home within our own agency.

Thank you for the newsletter. It is most inspirational for many of us former "grunts" as well. Stay safe!

Matt McNally

My husband forwarded this message to me. He is an avid fan of this site. I have to say, I am tremendously glad he did. This was one of the best, most American messages I have heard in ages. It is down to earth and honest. It isn't trying to make friends or make you feel better about you. It simply says prepare for life or you will be defeated. Suck it up and drive on. This message seems to be eluding not only the younger generations but all of America. We are struggling with a teenage son, and I plan on sending him some of the excerpts from this message in hopes of motivating him to be the young man we see in him. I grew up Army, served Army and love this country. I am heartbroken at what it is becoming. Your message gives me hope that I am not alone in how I feel. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for what you said.

Rebecca H. Roberts

Thank you so much for your thoughts on "older warriors " and us gray hairs who are in the twilight of our warrior careers. The words were so true, and the message so inspirational. After 17 years in the Army Reserve, I cross trained into the "green " Air Force. At age 46, I was the oldest candidate to ever complete the USAF Tactical Air Control School at Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Competing against 18 year olds, tenacity was the only thing I had to get me through the daily butt kickings. I served in Afghanistan and then in Iraq, returning in April 2008. I have supported the 25th ID, the 1st Cav and the 101st AB. I am saving your column and will read it again any time I start to feel sorry for myself. God Bless you for all that you do!

It was very informative..

The History of the Middle Finger

Well, now... here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing.

Good Dog!

Notice the suspect behind the car, apparently firing a gun - you see the smoke from the muzzle, and a split second later - the Shepherd Police Dog leaps across the roof of the auto, clamps onto the suspect, and brings him down so quickly - you'll watch it several times to really appreciate the valor of this dog.

This police dog is so fast, you have to watch this a few times to appreciate it. Go dog, go!!

The Great Power Conflict

By Rev G.J. Rako
LTC (Ret)

The greatest power in the universe is the power of God. The second greatest power in the universe is that of Satan. You have a choice in this the conflict. You can align yourself with the power of God or the power of Satan. God is the creator of the universe. He is the creator of all angelic creation and mankind. Long before the creation of man, Satan said he would usurp God and even become God.

Isaiah 14:12-14 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who have weakened the nations! "But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. ‘ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'

The "stars of God" in verse 13 refer to the angelic creation. When Satan fell, he took one third of all angelic creation with him.

Revelation 12:4 And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.

This prehistoric angelic conflict is still raging today and will continue until the end of human history.

Whether you are aware of it or not, you are either on God's side or on Satan's side of this conflict. This is really the only issue in life. We are deceived into thinking that politics, saving the whales, global warming, or any of a thousand stupid issues are important. They are not! You must decide for yourself what is important. However, if you decide against the God of the Bible, you are a fool, and have believed the lie of Satan. He has deceived you.

Psalms 14:1 ...The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Revelation 20:1-3 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

Revelation 20:7-8 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.

These are the two great powers of the universe. They are at war, and the battle is for your soul. Either great entity will provide power in your life. The choice is yours.

The power of God can be yours.

Psalms 77:15 You have by Your power redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.

Acts 26:18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.'

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Life is a journey. The first step to the power of God is mentioned in Romans 1:16 above, "the gospel, the power of God for salvation, to everyone who believes." We must first face the issue of God's grace in providing salvation.

Jesus Christ is the God of the Bible. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He has fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophesies concerning the coming of the Messiah. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29, 36). The way of salvation and to an eternal relationship with the living God is clear in scripture.

Acts 16:31 ... Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved...

John 3:15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the

[command to believe in the] Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

John 5:46 Jesus said, "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.

John 20:31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Faith alone in Christ alone is your entrance into the magnificent realm of the eternal God.

However, every effort to teach this Biblical truth is met with opposition from the great deceiver. Satan has counterfeited every truth of the Bible with a lie of his own to refute the bible and deceive mankind. Satan in his genius has developed a system of deceit that we call religion. Religion is anti God and anti Biblical. Religion is a system of slavery that leads to death. Christianity is a relationship with the living God that provides freedom.

Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,

John 8:31-32 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you live in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Notice there is a condition to freedom in John 8:31-32, living in the Word makes you a serious student of the Word. As a serious student of the Word, you shall know the absolute truth of the Word, and that knowledge makes you free.

One of the greatest truths of the Bible is God's policy directed toward man. His policy is grace. So few Christians understand grace, Satan's antithetical policy of legalism has infiltrated most Churches and Christian organizations today. In salvation, we are saved by grace. There is no merit or works of any kind on our part.

EPH 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

It is a gift of God. Jesus Christ did all the work and He gets all the credit. Satan has developed all the religions of the world and they ascertain that you must do something to reach God. In Christendom, the deceptions are almost endless. Rather than to keep what the Bible clearly states Satan has deceived people in to adding or subtracting from the truth. You will hear things like, "invite Christ into your heart", "if Jesus isn't Lord of all, He is not Lord at all," "you must make Jesus your Lord," and if after salvation your life isn't producing good works then, you were never saved, "you must have had a head belief and not a heart belief." None of these phrases or concepts are found in the Bible. Please re-read the verses above, Acts 16:31, John 3:15, 36, and John 20:31. Invite Christ into your heart? Your heart is a garbage dump of depravity.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Ecclesiastes 9:3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that, they go to the dead.

Will you in arrogance try to make Jesus Lord? Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev 17:14, 19:16). You cannot make Him be, or do anything. These are a few examples of the doctrine of demons replacing the Biblical view of salvation.

Men attack and twist into the lie of Satan every doctrine of the Bible. These lies become the basis of confusion, false teaching, and heresy in the Church. Legalism replaces grace and the Christian is once again enslaved and doomed to a life of bondage and fear.

Rom 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and discipline.

Our power comes from one of two sources, God or Satan.

Ephesians 2:1-2 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

1Cor 10:20-21 No, but I say that the things which the gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

1Tim 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,

2 Timothy 3:5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

The power of God in your life surpasses all other power in the universe.

Acts 4:33 And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.

Acts 10:38 "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Romans 1:4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

1 Corinthians 1:18 The Wisdom of God For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 2:5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

1 Corinthians 6:14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.

1 Corinthians 15:43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power

2 Corinthians 13:4 For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.

Ephesians 1:19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

Ephesians 1:21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,

Philippians 3:21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.

Colossians 1:29 For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

Hebrews 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

1Peter 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

2 Peter 1:3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

There is great power and great conflict. We little humans are in the middle of these two great and awful powers vying for our souls. Yet we have the power to choose which of these two great power systems to tap into either for our benefit, or to our destruction.

The Blue Warrior

The Blue Warrior

"Warriors on the streets"

This past weekend one of my patrol officers had to apply deadly force to neutralize a criminal that charged her with a large butcher knife. Her instincts and training brought her to the winning side of a bloody battle.

The key element in her success was engaging the "Warrior Spirit". This was the third deadly force encounter officers have faced in my department in the past couple of months. There is one factor in all three incidents that is the most important, the cops won. The common denominator for these officers was the "Warrior Spirit". Obviously much has been written on this topic but I can't stress enough the importance of the proper mindset when you are threatened by violence.

SWAT cops are taught the "Warrior Spirit" in a basic tactical course and a good SWAT Commander will continue to emphasize it through training. It becomes so engrained in the SWAT cops mind that it becomes a part of his personality.

A SWAT cop working the street in uniform can be picked out of a group of cops pretty easily. He's the guy in great shape, his swagger is full of confidence and usually he will be the officer

taking control of the situation.

The problem here is not all uniformed officers are trained properly in the "Warrior Spirit". Why has law enforcement in this country been training just SWAT cops to fight like "Warriors"? All patrol officers need the proper mind set when facing a violent encounter or they might find themselves on the losing side of a deadly force encounter. The first element that an officer considers when confronted with violence is to choose to fight or remove himself from the situation. Most often, removing yourself is a bad option or maybe not an option at all.

So, what happens in that brief moment it took you to choose to fight or retreat? The answer is the offender gains more time to engage you and gain the advantage.

In 1725, Mohican Indian chief Aupumut told his warriors,

"When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home".

Chief Aupumut obviously recognized that his warrior's mindset was the first step in the overall preparation of their development.

The "Warrior Spirit" is a combination of confidence, concentration, and tenacity. Those qualities are worthless without the physical skill and ability to complete the task but so, too, are the physical abilities without the proper mindset. Here are a few tips to help develop the "Warrior Spirit":

(1)  Be "aware" all the time and "anticipate" a threat.

(2)  Train like you fight.

(3)  Never quit.

(4)  Build confidence through training and fitness.

(5)  Fight chaos with chaos. Use speed, surprise and violence of action.

(6)  Create the mindset that killing a homicidal adversary is an acceptable action.

Here is a training principle that I like to use when training SWAT officers.

"Training should be designed to be uncomfortable physically and mentally. It

should take officers to stressful places, under a controlled environment, so that if they are ever taken there by an adversary it won't be their first time".

An officer's ability to react under duress, pain, and seemingly insurmountable odds remains the hallmark of the "Warrior Spirit". Tenacity against an adversary must be trained, expected, and demanded from our officers.

The point is simple, "Train to Fight & Fight to live". Don't hesitate to engage the "Warrior Spirit"! At the very first moment you sense violence let the spirit guide you to victory. We can all learn from our brothers in the military fighting for our freedom. Let them be assured that we are at home risking our lives for their families.

SGT. Glenn French

What Has Really Changed

This section has been dedicated to the new "call for change" and we say there's nothing new about change.

"Most of the change we think we see in life is due to truths being in and out of favor." American Poet Robert Frost (1870-1937)

These gentlemen think that when they have changed the names of things they have changed the things themselves. This is how profound thinkers mock the whole world.

"Is there anyone that isn't concerned with the energy problem? Government caused that problem while we all stood by unaware that we were involved. Unnecessary regulations and prices imposed—price limits—back in the ‘50's is the direct cause of today's crisis. Our crisis isn't because of a shortage of fuel; it's a surplus of government . . . [W]hen they tell us about the conservation–of course we should save. No one should waste a natural resource. But they act as if we've found all the oil and gas there is to be found in this continent, if not the world. Do you know that 57 years ago our government told us we only had enough for 15 years? And 19 years went by and they told us we only had enough left for 13 more years. Now, we've done a lot of driving since then and we'll do a lot more if government would do one simple thing get out of the way and let the incentives of the marketplace urge the industry out to find the sources of energy this country needs."

On the Old West Coast
Being further Reminiscences of a Ranger,
Major Horace Bell, 1830 – 1918.

Mayor of Los Angeles 1868

Before he is through with the famous Turner administration this truthful historian must tell how it came to pass that the city of Los Angeles was despoiled of its great communal domain of 20,000 acres. Title to which came down from His Most Catholic Majesty King Carlos III of Spain. To come quickly to the point the method was that the Mayor and Council would conceive it necessary every so often to have a ditch excavated to extend the water system over the city lands. Some certain person would be given the contract for the job, worth perhaps from one hundred to two hundred dollars. What the contractor would actually receive in payment would be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand acres of municipal land. The city chain gang would be loaned to do the actual work. Upon receiving conveyance of his specified quantity of land the contractor would reconvey to the mayor, and to each member of the council personally, a number of acres previously agreed upon. Thus the city's ancient domain—at least most of it, except what was already in private hands and under cultivation—was handed out.

Once upon a time the cities engaged the late George Hansen to survey and map certain portions of the municipality. Hansen was a man of integrity, a civil engineer of high standing and also a master of sarcasm. When his tract maps were completed, paid for and finally hung on rollers on the walls of the council room at the City Hall the dignity of the Municipal Corporation was considerably impaired by the discovery that an inscription had been written across the face of each plat in bold red ink, reading like this: "This tract stolen when A-was mayor." "This tract stolen when B-was mayor." "This tract stolen when C-was mayor." And so on. Then across the largest map of all, representing thousands of acres was written: "This tract stolen when Joel H. Turner was mayor."

In his first and only message Mayor Turner congratulated himself on the high character of his councilmen, his honorable co-workers for the public weal, and promised the people wonders to be performed in the way of public improvements. The era of progress started at once. The first thing was to sewer the city. The exact extent of this work was the digging of a ditch beginning on the west side of Main Street exactly opposite the center of Commercial Street, thence down the middle of Commercial about fie hundred feet or so to a point just east of Wilmington Street. Twelve thousand feet of lumber was used (these were wooden sewers) costing two hundred and fifty dollars. The whole improvement cost about four hundred dollars. This great sewer, three feet wide, one foot deep and laid one foot underground dumped into a cesspool, and only one man's property was connected with it. It was really built for him. The sewer and cesspool soon choked up and became a terrible menace to health, so much so that the courts ord

ered the whole public improvement abated and the cesspool filled with earth. After the chain gang had conducted the burial the sheriff stuck a cross into the mound of earth where the cesspool had been, bearing this inscription:

"Beneath this sand, mid fumes and gasses,
Lie the souls of nine municipal asses."

The Council paid for this famous Commercial Street sewer the sum of $32,000 on a gold bases with a scrip issue at the rate of fifty-five cents on the dollar. That is to say, this little four-hundred-dollar job was made to cost $52,800 and the tax payers of Los Angeles to-day are paying the same with interest in our municipal bonded debt.

But this was not half. With whetted appetites the hightoned Council proceeded to issue warrants to the amount of $150,000 and to sell them for cash. These warrants are included in our bonded indebtedness and oppress us in the payment of onerous and increasing tax rates. For this $150.000 deal no stubs were kept to give evidence of issue.

Here is where ex-Mayor Joseph Mascarel comes again into the picture, and in a most favorable light. Shrewd, vigilant and honest he got onto the details of the great financial schemes of the City Fathers, and without revealing his attitude toward them watched developments and took notes until time for the Grand Jury to meet. Then he appeared before that body with the result that the whole high-toned batch, mayor and councilmen, were indicted.

And now, can you believe what that city administration did in answer to public clamor against them? This is the remarkable gesture the threatened officials made: They cut the dam where the water was taken out of the Los Angeles River to supply irrigation in and around the city. Many people depended on the ditches for their domestic supply also. A million's worth of immediate damage was threatened.

A meeting of the landed proprietors was called and the author of these lines was made chairman of a committee to wait upon the Mayor and Council to demand that the city immediately repair the ruptured dam and main canal. This was the answer received: "Procure those indictments against us to be dismissed and we will grant your request; otherwise every vine, tree and spear of grass in this city may dry up, or you can fix it yourselves."

Crops were threatened with total ruin within a short time, immediate action was necessary and the affected citizens had to organize and do city work at their own expense.

It happened that the State Legislature was then in session, the month being February of 1870, a dry year. The irate land owners called another meeting and again chose the author chairman of a committee, this time to go before the Legislature and petition for permanent relief from such a state of affairs in the future.

Benjamin D. Wilson—Don Benito—himself a vineyardist, was our senator. Through his efforts and ours a bill was drawn taking the management of the Los Angeles River and the distribution of its waters from the hands of the Mayor and Council and substituting a board of Water Commissioners. The bill was hastily put through, the indicted city administration was deprived of power over the water situation, permanent repairs were made to the water system, and the orchards, vineyards and truck gardens, to say nothing of horses, cows and humans, were saved from drought.

The indictment against the mayor was pressed; he was tried, convicted and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. We then had a Mexican for a judge, a notorious corruption and afterwards a fugitive from the state. The indicted councilmen were before this court and used some potent arguments, for they procured the dismissal of their indictments.

And don't think that Mayor Turner served his ten years in prison. Not at all. His lawyers appealed, secured an order for a new trial - and that was the end of it. The mayor continued in office just as if nothing had happened as did the councilmen, and the taxpayers went on footing, as they still are footing, the bills incurred in this devil's dance.

After retirement from the mayoralty the Hon. Joel H. Turner was again appointed Justice of the Peace by the Board of Supervisors of the county and continued in office to the end of his life. And he lived a long time.

Major Horace Bell, 1830 – 1918.

"... if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."

["But now, if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."]

the Lord jesus Christ in Luke 22: 35-36.

"If you start to break down mentally, you aren't going to be able to do what you need to survive. If you've never been in an uncomfortable situation, you need to push your envelope so you know the tools and that you can do it."

Survival Manual FM 21-76

Now Only $10.95!

U.S. Army Survival Manual "21-76" has aided More US G.I.'s and civilians, regardless of the branch of service or reasons.

A close associate to the SF Gear community was once laughed at not only by his wife for keeping this guide in his SUV; but also from one of his "great outdoorsman" buddies.

Funny that when the three were on an expedition along the Alaskan highway and the SUV broke down and things got bad... The wife and "great outdoorsman" were not laughing when our associate flipped out his trusty "21-76" and built an arctic shelter. By the way, our associate was a former Marine Intel officer and a dessert rat while the great outdoorsman was a "Master" of the northwest wilderness!

Emulate that properly planned Marine, regardless of your service and be prepared with this manual! It covers a broad area of proven survival techniques. Topics include survival at sea, in jungles, desert and arctic regions. This manual, which is used throughout the U.S. Military, contains many useful illustrations and diagrams. Other topics include the procurement of potable water, food from animals and edible plants, finding directions using the sun and the stars, and locating or making shelter. This is one of the best available on field survival.

Hellcat MK 1 - Snap Open Mag Pouches - OD Green

The Need: The need for high mobility brought a need for compact chest harnesses as troops found themselves spending hours in HUMVEES. And as medics and grenadiers needed to affix more gear to their vests, we saw an answer in layering.

The Answer: S.O.Tech developed the internal magazine slots of the Hellcat Chest Rigs to provide more carrying capacity on a compact chest mounted platform. By moving the magazines to internal slots (patent pending), we freed up the front PALS webbing either for the attachment of more magazine / gear pouches or to provide a low profile chest rig with all the magazines laying flat against the body. Our inspirations came from a project with a Ranger Regiment medic who asked us to place magazine slots behind his medical pouch to give him more real estate. We transferred this idea onto a chest harness and found the most effective way to carry rifle magazines into combat.~~The front face of the rig is covered with PALS webbing which accepts military issue pouches. The back is mesh covered forming a map pocket. Internal slots hold 6 GI M4/M16 magazines secured by a pistol holster type thumb break for quick extraction. Thumb break has Velcro™ to accept standard magazines and magazines with Mag Pul or other extraction devices. Shoulder straps are of wide two inch webbing for wear over body armor or alone, and affix with three large two inch side-lock buckles for quick extraction. Removable bib is sold separately.

  • 1000 Denier DuPont Cordura Plus fabric, double layered.
  • 138 weight bonded nylon parachute harness thread.
  • American name brand plastic and metal fasteners (Duraflex, ITW Nexus, ACW, etc.).

Tactical Tips

No matter what your taught know this fact: in a combat shoot in distances up to 15 yards, Nothing beats the accuracy of Point shooting. Well Our editor of SFGNL has beena studenot of Both Colnenel Applegate and Col. Cooper . Col Applegates( and Majoy Fari bairn 0 tactics do not perish with time Col. Coopers need constant attention like a high maintenance lady.Beg to Disagree?Read on o'warriors read on!

Colonel Rex Applegate On Point Shooting:

Gentlemen, I want to dispose of an unanswered question which is probably on your minds, the age of that old bastard now speaking on the platform.

I will be 84 next June, and I assure you that I have no career or economic axe to grind. In my role as a contrarian, I realize that some of you may consider me to be a voice from the past, however, what I'm going to say to you, involves my evaluation of the handgun training which most of you are currently giving to your officers and recruits. Although I am addressing your group here in Washington State, what I have to say also applies to all handgun firearms trainers in the U.S. Military and Law Enforcement....Point shooting is the employment of the handgun in close quarter combat without the need or use of the sights.

Point Shooting,(contrary to some of these self-appointed gurus)is not some untested, untried theory!"

Single hand, Point Shooting

When any individual is subjected to combat stress and a life threatening situation at close quarters, he instinctively faces the threat with both eyes open, focusing on the target, and assumes an instinctive natural forward crouch. In the case of the handgun shooter, the gun is gripped convulsively.

These are the building blocks around which single hand point shooting is based. The Isosceles, two handed, sighted shooter reacts much the same in similar circumstances.

The point shooter locks his wrist and elbow, lifts, or raises his arm in a pump hand motion until the gun reaches eye level, and he fires. His eyes never leave the target. Gun sights and process of sighting are completely disregarded. Separate trigger finger function and recoil control are not important factors because he is gripping the gun convulsively and squeezes the whole hand when activating the trigger. Head hitting accuracy is possible at a range of up to 15 yards in all kinds of light and terrain conditions, from either a stationary or moving position. Combat competence in point shooting can be achieved regardless of shooter background and the weapon used. Trainers will find that combat expertise can be developed in a shorter training time with less ammunition expenditure and little need for constant retraining. The reason all this is possible, is because point shooting is based on how the mind, body and eyes - instinctively react under combat stress. Simply put, it's a natural instinctive process

like raising your hand and pointing the gun barrel as you would your finger (etc.) The free hand is used to maintain balance when stationary or moving, while using a flashlight, opening a car door, avoiding body contact, etc. From a holstered position, the body bends forward in the instinctive crouch position, the handgun is drawn and lifted, or raised to the firing position.

This system of handgun shooting at close quarters has a long history of success in actual combat, dating back to prior world war l. It is well documented... Single hand, point shooting is the best, most practical means for the military man, policeman, or civilian to shoot at close ranges. We all know the story about how, in the 1950's, Jack Weaver introduced the Weaver stance into combat competition shooting, a recreational sport. This system was picked up and very successfully promoted by the guru from Gunsite. Many other writers and ‘experts' have since been responsible for its almost universal acceptance as the way to shoot a handgun in simulated combat. Movies, TV, The Gun Press, and many authors have‘spawned' numerous books, articles and videos on this method of two handed, sighted, handgun shooting. Compared to the basic shooting stance, Isosceles and Point, the Weaver requires complex motor skills, requiring hand-eye coordination and a series of timed muscle movements working together to ac

hieve sighted fire accuracy. The Weaver shooter must spend many hours on the range, expend a relatively great amount of more ammunition, and undergo constant training and retraining to build up what is known as ‘muscle memory' which is supposed to replace natural instinctive responses in stress situations...Generally, it is excellent in achieving high scores in IPSC type competition shooting. However, it does not meet the needs of the shooter in actual close quarter, high tension combat situations.

Where does Jeff Cooper stand on close quarter handgun training? In his 1961 book, he states that 90% of combat pistol shooting is done with one hand, and that if you are trained to hit only if you can see the sights, you are only 8% effective. At this time, he has turned almost 100% around, and advocates the two handed Weaver sighted shot for almost all handgun combat situations. ‘You can't have it both ways.'"

For Your Information:

During the years 1972-92, there were 1,722 police officers killed in armed encounters. The following is a breakdown of the distances in which these officers were fatally shot:

  • 0-5 ft - 928 officers fatally shot (percentage is 53.89)
  • 6-10 ft - 342 officers fatally shot (percentage is 19.68)
  • 11-20 ft - 237 officers fatally shot (percentage is 13.77)
  • 21-50 - 118 officers fatally shot (percentage is 6.85)
  • 50 ft plus - 97 officers fatally shot (percentage is 5.63)

Proper training in combat point shooting achieves quicker expertise, does not necessitate so much retraining to maintain proficiency, saves more police lives, and takes more criminals off the streets. There has been too much concentration on what is erroneously called the "new modern technique" promoted by self-appointed gurus instead of what is, and has been proven in combat!"

Col. Rex Applegate’s Presentation

To Police Firearms Trainers

On February 24, 1998 in Seattle, Washington as reprinted in Informed Source Intelligence Newsletter, July/August edition 1998

(Colonel Rex Applegate has enjoyed an extraordinary career as a world renowned leader on Close Combat techniques, as knife designer, and as the foremost expert on Riot Control. Applegate served in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence, and was a member of the OSS during World War ll where as an instructor expert, he train OSS operatives in the art of point shooting. His book "Kill or Get Killed" is the best selling book on unarmed and armed close combat in history. The U.S. Marine Corps has reprinted "Kill or Get Killed" as an official reference training manual, and Applegate's revolutionary knife fighting and Point Handgun Shooting Techniques are in wide use, earning the unparalled respect of of virtually everyone in the police shooting and military communities. Applegate is also the winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner Award. His books include Kill or Get Killed, Crowd & Riot Control, Point Shooting, Shooting For Keeps, Scouting and Patrolling - and more!)

Fastest shot in the world

This YouTube video will blow you away. Bob Munden claims to be the fastest gun to ever live. He specializes in quick drawing with a revolver. And he claims to hold 18 world records.

Can he back up all that big talk? You better believe it. I've never seen anyone do anything this fast. He uses a specially made gun and holster. But no gear alone can produce these results. This made my jaw drop.

Former Special Forces soldier publishes wilderness survival book

Rich Johnson credits actor John Wayne with launching his career path and his wife, Becky, with keeping him there.

Johnson was a missionary overseas in the late 1960s when Wayne's Vietnam War movie, The Green Berets, was released. Something about the theme song ("Put silver wings on my son's chest") touched Johnson. He joined the U.S. Army Special Forces when he returned to the United States. An essential part of his training was the ability to parachute from an airplane anytime, anywhere and survive with what he had with him.

"It was tough," said Johnson of Sequim, Wash., author of the recently published, "Rich Johnson's Guide to Wilderness Survival." "It took everything I had until they put the beret on my head. I've never been able to say I quit, and 24/7, they're trying to get you to quit."

American and Mexican Special Forces Acelerating to establish joint or combined binational law enforcement units capable of quick response to cartel activity?

Enhanced role expected for U.S. in drug cartel battle .. But will Mexico embrace it?

Alfredo Corchado

Startling development in U.S. relations with Mexico as both countries struggle to combat the growing problem on our southern border. Real possibility of combined operations is looming.

MEXICO CITY - Alarmed by spiraling drug violence along their shared border, U.S. and Mexican officials say they foresee an enhanced U.S. role in the battle against powerful cartels, including joint operations that could involve private American contractors or U.S. military and intelligence personnel.

The U.S. and Mexican officials say their cooperation could go beyond the current practice of "sharing intelligence." They say that historical concerns about Mexican sovereignty may be overcome by the challenge in restoring stability to key regions, particularly along the border.

Several officials, interviewed separately and on the condition of anonymity, stressed that specifics about an enhanced U.S. role remain unclear and that the timing is also unclear and will largely depend on the widening violence.

But "everything is on the table," one Mexican official said, including "joint operations."

Navy SEAL gets Silver Star for Iraq heroism

SAN DIEGO – In recent years, Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Mitchell Hall has competed in triathlons and the Hawaii Ironman, but on Jan. 26 he quietly received one of the nation's top medals for heroism in combat.

Navy Capt. Thomas Brown II pinned the Silver Star medal on Hall in a low-key ceremony held in a conference room at Naval Special Warfare Group 1, the command said in a Jan. 28 statement.

Hall received the medal, the third highest award to sailors for combat valor after the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross, for his "conspicuous gallantry and heroic actions against the enemy" during a deployment that included an intense firefight near Habbaniyah, Iraq, on April 2, 2007.

According to the release, Hall, assigned to the Naval Special Warfare Center, deployed with Coronado, Calif.-based SEAL Team 5 and was manning observation posts along the Euphrates River with a squad of Iraqi commandos when their radios rang out with reports of a Marine Corps unit caught by sniper fire nearby.

Hall's men spotted suspicious enemy fighters near their post, and soon after the men traded heavy gunfire across alleys and between buildings with the insurgents. Rounds struck one of the SEALs, and Hall ran over to his aid.

"Under heavy fire, Hall repeatedly exposed himself to heavy fire to engage the enemy and provide suppressive fire for his teammates. He and his squad then worked to secure a helicopter landing zone for the wounded SEAL's extraction," the release stated.

Brown, the commodore, commended Hall's actions, saying he "acted with great skill to save an injured teammate, his heroic actions battling insurgents that day in Albu Bali is part of the Naval Special Warfare's remarkable work in defeating the insurgency in the west part of Iraq."

Riverine force expands reach, ensures security for upcoming elections

BASRAH, Iraq (Courtesy of CJSOTF-AP Public Affairs, Jan. 26, 2009) – In preparation for the upcoming elections, the Tactical Response Team of Basrah's Special Weapons and Tactics conducted several reconnaissance operations on the Shatt al-Arab waterway in mid-January.

The operations met objectives and proved the TRT's ability to successfully expand their patrol capability, which facilitates full access to the waterways in Basrah's vicinity.

"With this increase in access, we have a significant capability to choke off extremist activity during the Jan. 31 elections, a time in which criminal attacks are predicted to intensify," said a SWAT advisor.

Historically, the waterway lacked law enforcement presence, thereby allowing a free flow of lethal aid to criminals and terrorists in Iraq. Established in December, Basrah TRT enhances Iraqi Security Forces' capability through maritime and urban-strike operations, thus increasing ISF's ability to limit criminal activity.

"At first, locals did not know why we were on the river and what we were capable of doing for them," said an Iraqi TRT member. "Now, they line the shores and wave as we go by. They are also more interactive and provide us with information that can help us better secure Basrah's waterway."

Burn after listening: Man finds military secrets on MP3 player

A New Zealand man has landed himself in a real-life version of Burn After Reading, the Coen brothers' film about two fitness centre employees who get their hands on a disc containing the memoirs of a CIA agent, with comic - and deadly - consequences.

Chris Ogle inadvertently found 60 US military files, including names and telephone numbers for American soldiers after buying an MP3 player in a secondhand shop in Oklahoma, USA. He came across the data when he connected the $18 (£12) device to his computer - hardly the rock tunes, snapshots and video one might expect to find on a secondhand MP3 player.

The military data included US social security numbers and even which female troops were pregnant, TV One New Zealand reported.

Details of equipment deployed to bases in Afghanistan and a mission briefing were also found on some files, displaying names such as "Bagram", a US base in Afghanistan. Most of the files are dated from 2005, so are unlikely to compromise US security, experts said. However, when a TV One reporter called some of the phone numbers listed, he found some still active.

At 86, retired Carbide engineer still building on his busy life

By Sandy Wells

Bob Perleman served in the South Pacific, China and Korea on the Navy's Underwater Demolition Team, forerunner of the Navy SEALs.

He spent a working lifetime as a Union Carbide engineer, the realization of a boyhood dream. Plant building took him all over the place - London, Belgium, Canada, Vancouver.

He stayed with missionaries in Indonesia, an extension of a conference trip to Singapore with the Methodist Church.

Artifacts from far-off places decorate the Edgewood Summit apartment he shares with Pat, his wife of 64 years.

Longtime lobbyist for the AARP, he recently earned the AARP Distinguished Service Award. He was the organization's first state president.

At 86, there's still no place he'd rather be than zipping down the slopes at Snowshoe.

Now, he's taking art lessons. The enthusiasm that earned him a slot on the Iowa State cheering squad hasn't left him.

"It'll Never Happen Here"

By Kirby Ferris

Gun owners now face what appears to be the seeming inevitability of nationwide gun registration and ammunition registration. Many longtime pro-gun advocates, even in their most fitful dreams, had not foreseen the immensely somber showdown we are confronting.

One writer (Bob Unruh in World Net Daily) appropriately used the phrase "perfect storm" to describe what American gun owners face at this moment in history. All the elemental societal and political forces seem to have conjoined to form an immense "low pressure" zone of impending anti-gun legislation. The goal: Confiscation.

Is "confiscation" too harsh a word? Ladies and gentlemen, every government on Earth that has orchestrated a genocide first registered, and then confiscated, personal firearms. See: JPFO Genocide Chart .

Ironically, no one element of this "perfect storm of gun control" is actually new. We've had plenty of warning. It's just that this time all the conditions truly are perfect. Like Katrina headed for New Orleans.

1. We've heard of ammunition registration schemes for years. Using the Georgia State Legislature as a probing device, the victim disarmament crowd is going to bar code your bullets, and, if they can pass the whole enchilada, make you "dispose of" your present ammunition by January of 2012. Of course, that means you will have to sign for every box of ammunition you buy from now on. My opinion? The NRA will squawk loudly … and then compromise. The NRA will consider it a victory that they get the "dispose of" clause dropped. Desired goal: Confiscation.

2. Let's all watch as thousands of homecoming veterans become ineligible for gun ownership. This law is a done deal. The NRA backed it and Bush signed it. Some brave soldier, fighting house to house in Fallujah, might decide to seek some counseling for the horror he's seen. Sure he's got issues. War is hell. Ask any WWII, Korean, or Vietnam combat veteran. No one can remain psychically unscarred. But now this combat veteran, this soldier who offers his life to protect your freedom, will be denied the most fundamental human right, the right to self defense. Desired goal: Confiscation.

3. Universal handgun registration. And this one is wafting up from Barack Hussein Obama's home State of Illinois. Again, this is a probe: Get a law passed on a State level and then let it "trickle up" to Congress and a President who will be the most anti gun in our history. Desired goal: Confiscation.

4. Obama's pick for Attorney General, and pending legislation to give that officeholder complete personal discretion to ban firearms that were originally designed for military or law enforcement use. That means pump shotguns (used in WWI), Grampa's old Garrand that he gave you (used in WWII), and any semi auto rifle or pistol that has military or police background use. Oh yeah, toss in your .308 deer rifle. It's a "sniper rifle". Desired goal: Confiscation.

Additionally Obama is going to probably get two chances at new Supreme Court justices. And, because the NRA long ago retreated into a reactive stance when it actually had the power to utterly defeat prior legislation, our so-called gun rights advocates will once again fall prey to typical "dialectic" maneuverings by the victim disarmament crowd. An insane bill is presented (thesis), reaching far beyond what our opponents actually want (at the moment), the NRA screams and takes a flaccid stand (antithesis) … and then compromises, and we get saddled with another sellout of our rights (synthesis).

What can be done? Petition the politicians who already ignore you? Petition the NRA Board of Directors, when it is blatantly obvious that the NRA was infiltrated by Bill of Rights saboteurs decades ago? No, all your letters and faxes and emails and phone calls won't work with the two- faced connivers who are running things, both in D.C. and deep within the NRA. Forget the traitors and their dupes. Don't waste your breath.

It's time to take it to the streets. No, I'm not talking about open shooting … yet. I'm talking about educating your friends and neighbors. If every ardent gun owner can bring just one other person over to our somber understanding of freedom and private firearms, this battle … no, this war … will be won. You need a "secret weapon" that will quietly penetrate the awareness of your friends and neighbors. JPFO's DVD "2A Today for the U.S.A." is just that "secret weapon". This documentary film is quietly persuasive. What it presents is inarguable. ("2A Today for the U.S.A." is free online from www.jpfo.org.)

What if every ardent gun owner brought two people over to our side? We can bury the moral perversity of victim disarmament for decades.

There's a storm a comin'. Tell your neighbors. Yes, the "perfect storm" of "gun control" approaches. Batten down the hatches.

U.S.S. Independence: A Triple Hulled, Weapon-Laden Monster

Recently the US Navy and General Dynamics took the lid off the new U.S.S. Independence littoral combat ship (LCS). This beast will sail close to the shore and throw everything imaginable at an enemy "from armored vehicles and helicopters to shells, torpedoes and missiles." Plus, it can hustle at a rumored 60 knots. Basically, that means the enemy will have a difficult time escaping the wrath of this mighty vessel no matter where they are.

Blair Holt Licensing and Record Act of 2009

Are you ready for the House Bill titled 'HR 45, Blair Holt Licensing and Record Act of 2009'. It will make it illegal to own a firearm unless it is registered with the database in Washington D.C. As a gun owner you will have to be finger printed, you will be required to provide your DL#, SS#, you must maintain a valid address at all times, submit to mental and physical health records being put on file, you will also be required to file any address changes and any ownership changes even if a private sale. Each update will cost $25 and if you fail to comply you will lose your right to own firearms. This bill and its language mirror almost completely one defeated last year in the House of Representatives by soon to be Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Will we the citizenry be as lucky this time?

Pass this on to everyone who believes in strict Constitutionalism and remember that laws only apply to those who obey them. Criminals by definition and nature do not abide by laws. New laws and restrictions only apply to the law abiding citizen and are not written with the criminal in mind. With guns, it is not about having laws on the books to prosecute individuals, it is about taking guns away from the people so that no one has them in the first place. One last item to note, when assuming power and creating a facist state, Hitler was a proponent of strong gun laws because a disarmed populace was much easier to control than an armed one. The kings of old also outlawed weapons of any kind in any region that they conquered to quell the ability of the citizens to uprise against them.

The Founding Fathers of this nation understood all of the above and because of this they included the second amendment in the constitution. In fact, they knew that at some point in every society's life span that the need for the population to arise came about. To this end they made the right to keep and bear arms against a tyrannical state an absolute right that could not be revoked. They did this because the first thing tyrants and despots do is to remove a population's right to defend themselves. When this is done, the tyrants have no problem with the destruction of society as we know it.

Send this on to all true patriots! Protect your Second Amendment!

The following is a summary of the bill as provided by the Congressional Research Service. If you read the whole bill, you'll find it will effectively preclude the ownership of ANY firearms by law-abiding people unless licensed by the Attorney General. How long do you think THAT would take??

Congressional Research Service Summary

The following summary was written by the Congressional Research Service, a well-respected nonpartisan arm of the Library of Congress. GovTrack did not write and has no control over these summaries.

Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 - Amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless that person has been issued a firearm license under this Act or a state system certified under this Act and such license has not been invalidated or revoked. Directs the Attorney General to: (1) establish and maintain a firearm injury information clearinghouse; (2) conduct continuing studies and investigations of firearm-related deaths and injuries; and (3) collect and maintain current production and sales figures of each licensed manufacturer.

Always Remember

David de Crespigny Smiley, British military officer and SOE secret agent who became a master of unconventional warfare dies

In a military career that encompassed unconventional clandestine special forces operations in the Balkans, the Middle East and South-east Asia, as well as more conventional soldiering with the Royal Horse Guards (the "Blues") during the Second World War, David Smiley was one of Britain’s most skilled proponents of irregular warfare -- serving in Britians Special Operation Executive the equilvent of the U.S. Officce of Strategic Services - OSS) - and his post-war activities were to prove equally as colourful.

Noted for his plain speaking, but equally, his absolute honesty, loyalty and integrity, David de Crespigny Smiley was born in 1916. His maternal grandfather, Claude de Crespigny, was a noted sportsman and adventurer, traits that his grandson clearly inherited.

PRESS RELEASE: Army Ranger killed in action

U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Jan. 7, 2008) — An Army Ranger serving with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment died Jan. 6 while conducting combat operations in Northern Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Anthony D. Davis, 29, was killed during a direct-fire engagement by a heavily armed enemy combatant. The enemy combatant was subsequently killed when he engaged the assault force. No other Rangers were injured.

"Staff Sergeant Davis leaves behind a legacy in the countless Rangers who he has trained, influenced and befriended through numerous years of service and multiple deployments with this Regiment," said Col. Richard D. Clarke, 75th Ranger Regiment commander.

Legendary 'First SEAL' passes away

Boehm pioneered Navy's unconventional warfare

Roy Boehm of Punta Gorda, a cantankerous retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander who fought three wars, started the Navy's first SEAL team and shared his harrowing adventures --and his battles against military bureaucracy --in an autobiography, has completed his last mission.

Roy Boehm, who had struggled with health problems for many years, died at home Tuesday night. He was 84.

His widow, Susan Boehm, declined to be interviewed about her husband. In fact, she pleaded that no story be written.

Susan said she was trying to carry out her husband's last wish, that his death not be publicized.

He wanted no obituary, no funeral service and no fanfare over his death, Susan said.

"He just wanted to go in peace," she said.

Boehm, however, had become a legend nationally for the historic role he played in pioneering unconventional warfare tactics.

Locally, Boehm also was respected for the way he stood up for the military veterans within his community, several local veterans said Friday.

"John Kennedy was right," wrote U.S. Navy Admiral Whitey Taylor, in a 1997 letter to Boehm. "The U.S. Navy SEALs will bear your mark as long as they and the freedom they fight for exists."

"He was quite a great guy," said Lionel Schuman, a board member with Charlotte County's Military Heritage & Aviation Museum.

Schuman said he got to know Boehm, who became an avid pilot during his retirement, through both men's participation in events with Experimental Aircraft Association 565.
