While all Air Force personnel currently undergo S.E.R.E training if they are to be part of a flight crew, it is usually done before posting to their first base and as part of their initial training once MOS school is over. Because of the current heavy use of the Air Force to soften up enemy positions before attack by our ground troops and to gather data, the flight crews are at increased risk of being shot down and captured while over enemy territory. Captured crews have had an excellent reputation for dealing with the experience and coming through it a whole person. This is due primarily to the excellent and very realistic S.E.R.E training they receive...
The U.S. Air Force S.E.R.E mission is to prepare aircrew and high risk of capture DOD personnel to survive under any conditions. S.E.R.E Specialists train over 6,500 aircrew members a year in the proper use of principles, techniques, equipment, and procedures necessary to survive anywhere in the world.
The Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (S.E.R.E) Specialist School career field was born in 1947 when Gen Curtis LeMay, the Commander, Strategic Air Command created the first survival training program at Marks AFB, Alaska. As the demand for S.E.R.E training increased the school relocated in December of 1949 to Camp Carson, Colorado. The first arch can be traced back to this approximate point-in-time.
The S.E.R.E Arch, as we know it today, is rooted in the United States Army's Ranger Tab as Gen. LeMay's initial cadre was recruited heavily from Ranger units. As S.E.R.E has evolved the USAF Survival School has changed locations and commands but the distinctive scroll shaped arch worn on the left shoulder has always been a part of an S.E.R.E Specialists uniform. Through the years, the arch has been approved for wear at various levels of command.
A S.E.R.E Specialist becomes an expert on the methods used to survive in the arctic, desert, open ocean, jungle, mountain regions, in-combat and captivity situations. Through training, they learn the skills necessary to pass your knowledge on to others. S.E.R.E Specialists can \"talk the talk\" because they have \"walked the walk.\" Additionally, because of the intense instructional program, they are authorized to wear the S.E.R.E Beret, S.E.R.E Specialist Arch, and the AETC Instructor badge upon completion of Tech school.
After completion of the S.E.R.E Indoctrination Course at Lackland AFB TX, all approved applicants are assigned to Fairchild AFB, Washington where training takes place. Before starting technical training they will complete the Combat S.E.R.E Training course and the Water Survival, Non-Parachuting course. The Combat S.E.R.E Training course is a 17 day course that includes eleven days of academic, laboratory, and field training over survival and evasion techniques followed by six days of academic and laboratory training on surviving captivity. The Water Survival, Non-Parachuting course provides aircrew members with two days of hands-on training with the equipment they would actually use in a water survival situation.
The Course S-V81-A - Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape Specialist Training, is a six month school for S.E.R.E Specialist Training (SST) is located in Fairchild AFB, WA.
It is the 6 month technical training program that all potential S.E.R.E Specialists go through to learn S.E.R.E, Personnel Recovery and Instructor skills. During this course, students will become specialists in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape as well Personnel Recovery. All of this prepares future S.E.R.E Specialists to instruct any Air Force S.E.R.E related program and be world wide deployable.
This school is one of the most physically and mentally demanding technical schools in the Air Force. SST offers two classes a year, broken down into a summer class (starts in July) and a winter class (starts in Jan.) The longest field exercise is 22 days during the Familiarization and Mobile phases. After that the time varies from about 5
To 12 days.
As a student the typical day on base begins at 0700.
Most days will begin with physical training intended on preparing trainees for upcoming field training exercises. PT may consist of runs of 2-8 miles, calisthenics that may consist of, but is not limited to, 200 push-ups, 200 sit-ups, 200 flutter kicks, 50 pull-ups, and 50 8-count body builders. After, students meet at the SST building (school house) and attend academic lessons. On base instruction will vary depending on the phase of training.
Any given day in the field usually starts before the sun is up and ends long after the sun has gone down. No matter how many times a student may find themselves being awake for countless hours without sleep and no matter how cold or hot they think they are in the end it is all worth it to become a US Air Force S.E.R.E Specialist...
After successfully completing training, S.E.R.E qualified individuals will be ready to take your place as one of just over 300 S.E.R.E Specialists in the Air Force. While the primary base of operations is Fairchild AFB, Washington, positions are available at several bases around the world. After graduating Tech school they may volunteer to attend a variety of DoD courses, such as the Army's Basic Parachutist Course at FT. Benning, Military Freefall (HALO) and SCUBA to name a few.
